As soon as this video was over I looked for MR2s and the cheapest one was a red 91' turbo for $12500. The next one was a Veilside widebody 00' for $21950. "Hey bud, So you want to go in to debt"
Ha I did the same, could only find a single 2nd gen and the guy gave no details on it. A few third gens, which I actually drive. The veilside does look nice tho right?
There’s this thing that the MR2 community commonly do with our cars and that is engine swaps. You don’t necessarily need the “Turbo” model MR2 for it to be a turbo. I have a 1987 Toyota MR2 and I have a 3SGTE engine swap and that thing is pretty quick. Total cost for overall swap would be $3-4k
I’ve never driven an gen1 or gen2 but my dad had a gen3 when I was in high school and it’s a wicked fun car! Compared to something like a Miata I think the gen3 MR2 is more raw and special. En though it didn’t have a lot of power the mid engine layout made the handling a lot more fun in my opinion and more engaging overall. I’m definitely getting another when I get the chance.
The third gen isn't the one to get if you want to mod it because it's a significantly better platform out of the box. Compared to the second gen, it's lighter but more rigid, shorter but with a longer wheelbase, and the engine bay can fit nearly anything you can swap in a second gen. If you want a straightforward swap for some more power, the 2ZZ is it. If you want to embarrass MR2s, Lotuses and Porsches alike, you can swap in the 2GR. You can fit wide tires in the rear without rolling the fenders or going wide body. And if you don't like the styling as much, there's more than a few kits out there that can change the look of the car. Personally, I like the styling of the third gen but a simple kit like the SARD type A enhances the look enough to make it stand out more among its peers. I love the second gen too, don't get me wrong, but too many people dismiss the third gen out of willful ignorance. At their own peril, I say.

After having owned three 91's both NA 5SPD, AT and finally getting a 93' they have been the most reliable, dependable, daily driver cars that I have ever had the opportunity to drive. Styling of the MR2 2nd gen still gets so many head turns and very few can figure out what car it is and who makes is. I love the mystery of owing a piece of Toyota heritage that still has yet to find a successor to the styling. It's the only mid-engine two seater that you can move the seats back or recline in, no other 2 seater can do this due to the seat is right against the back firewall. It's been incredible. 30 years going with mine and I would probably never let it go. No compromises with an MR2. If you happen to find a mint '93 don't hesitate to getting one.
The ZZW30 looked miles better than a Boxter and weighed 6-700 pounds less. Slap a hardtop on a Spyder and drop a 2ZZ or a turbo in and you've got one of the best looking, best cornering cars on the road. The Elise is a better comparison, it had the same engine and similar weight, but it was a huge miss that Toyota never offered the 2ZZ as an option in the MR-2. I've still to find out the reasoning why Toyota made this decision, best guesses are Lotus made them sign a contract prohibiting them from putting the 2ZZ in a mid-engine car. More work for me, but then again had the 2ZZ been an option in the ZZW30 they might've become more desirable and harder to get, and they're rare enough as it is so I'm glad I found one at a decent price and was able to swap in the 2ZZ. Silver linings, since I was gonna do an engine swap anyways I may as well fully build the engine before I install it....and I did ;) And as fast as it is now, it has upgraded bearings, valves, springs, crank, oil pump (known for failing) so it's hardened just in case I ever decide to really push it and turbo it. So maybe only offering the 1ZZ worked out pretty well for those few hardcore 3rd gen fans out there. Oh and pop up headlights....ruin cars, the only thing that makes the second gen look so.....basic.

I broke the ass loose drifted the corner but let off the throttle... the car SNAPPED back straight as the pretzels flew out of the bag covering my entire body with pretzels. It was great.
Proud mk2 Mr2 owner here, can confirm that the car is brilliant, decent power, super comfortable for me with my stupidly long legs. Handles excellent. Good fuel economy, was doing the same trip in a Peugeot 206 previously and the mileage out of a tank when driven the same as the 206, mileage was pretty close. Engines were 206 = 1.4 L pet mr2 =2.0 L pet. Makes actually somewhat usable daily driver car considering how compact it is, trunk/frunk space is good
I loved my 3rd gen. I would pack 3 wheels/tires in the passenger seat and 1 in the frunk, 3 ton jack , 4 jack stands, a set of sockets, torque wrench, breaker bar, and magnetic car and class numbers, head to my local SCCA event jack it up on all 4 stands take the 'streets' off and put the racing setup on. So easy to work on. Oil changes were easy too. Toyota had some really clever guys and gals back then! Miata is always the answer, but if the question was multiple choice, MR2 is the 'technically correct too' answer that you would argue with your teacher about and she'd give you credit.
I have the mr2 spyder with a 2zz swap and there's plenty with k20 swap out there as well as a few with the 2gr swap. It's an underated car and I like the fact that not many people are aware of how good it is. Its my favorite and its better value for money than a lotus elise
Real talk, if everyone knew how easy it is to racecar or show car out a MK3 MR2 they wouldn't bother with the previous generations. The most overlooked factor is how easy it is to install a wide body on the car because every panel is bolt on. None of the exterior panels are welded and they are all easy to remove. Widebody kits are all bolt on replacement panels. slap in their engine and forced induction of choice and realize real quick it was the superior platform out of the 3 generations if you want to look good, go fast or do both at the same time. Aftermarket and OEM hard tops are available if you are willing to look for them but they can get pricey. By far the easiest of the 3 generations to work on as well. Best part is they are dirt cheap and easy to find.
My first car was an AW11. My second car was another AW11 that I engine swapped to a 4AGZE and drove the crap out of. It's been broken for the past year or so, but seeing this makes me want to spend the time and money to fix her up all nice again. I already upgraded them, but who knows, I may end up getting even newer... WHEELS, TIRES, AND SUSPENSION FROM FITMENT INDRUSTRIES.
I got yelled at while stopped at the traffic lights a year ago. "What the hell is it?" I yelled back "mr2" and he just looked blank. Then I yelled "Toyota" and he looked a bit pissed. My car isn't badged so I guess he thought I was being a smartass. It's been 20 odd years since Toyota made anything other than family cars.
For anyone looking to get the 2nd gen mr2 turbo that has some mechanical sense I would suggest getting an na shell and swaping in a gen 4 3sgte (the turbo motor but with new technology and more power than ever came in the turbo mr2) It is very cheap and reliable. Highly recommend
Disagree, the 3rd generation is the best in handling and you can simply slap a turbo on there like I did and gap most cars. Plus they look sick with all the trd bits
Same, third is without a doubt the best handling. It was the first car to beat Tsuchiya AE86 on Hot Version. It took it to gapplebees lmao. I'm buying a zzw30 as my first MR2. Plus, the style of the car really grows on you after a while haha
When I think of Toyota I think of the Mark II, Cresta, Chaser, Crown, Aristo, Trueno, Levin, GT-Four, Century, MR2, Altezza, 2000GT, Verossa, Soarer and the Sera (mainly because the McLaren F1 took inspiration from the doors on it).
My brother had the first mk1 MR2 in central Florida in 85. It was a cool car. I remember a large group of exotic cars driving to a show. They saw the MR2 and opened up a gap for us to join in. Sweet.
Man, my first GENII I bought in 1995 in was a '92NA loved it up until 2002, sold it and bought the rare hard top factory turbo! Owned it all the way until 2019... What a run of MR2's good part of my life...
This little car means a lot to me. The first car i ever bought was an 88 mr2 that i got for $250. I only have good memories, in fact only the best memories. Going too fast down a turn and sliding 100 feet down a sidewalk. Street racing in Kent on a Friday night, getting pulled over going 110 down i5 racing my friends Subaru. all i can do is think back and smile, even though thinking back i was a very irresponsible driver. I still have it today but the chassis has 330k miles on it and rust has all but completely destroyed it. Im actually in the market for a rolling chassis at the moment.
I still come back to this vid and donuts to just watch and still learn about the mr2. This vid came out like a couple days after I got mine and it was like a sign from God that I made the right choice. Right now she’s sitting in the drive way. Kinda dead in a few ways but hopefully this week she will gain new life
Another day another MR2 video haha. Happy to not have another video talking about snap oversteer a lot and focusing on how great of a platform the SW20 is!
Love love love my 2. Had to watch this video twice. It's also a HUGE pain to work on, but when I look at it I can't wipe that stupid smile off my face.
michax175 get one you won’t regret it one bit! I own a mk1 and had it for about 3 years now and don’t have any plans on replacing it anytime soon. I daily mine everyday and some how i make it work. Hopefully this motivates you to get one. It’s such a great car.
I have a gen 3 and you will not regret it a bit, sooo much potential with the mid engine platform, the exotic looks and the body kits you put on it, doing a k swap would be the ultimate engine swap
@@metalheadarno8914 Also driving a 3rd gen for the past six years and can recommend. Been slowly upgrading it and it's the most fun I've had on the road. Really excellent platform cause it's already good stock but when you get nice wheels, suspension and bracing on there it's just ridiculous. Building a turbo for it now.
Me too. The worst part my friend has owned one for almost 15 years. It needs about 4k worth the work, but mostly in perfect condition. He won't get around to making it run, or sell it to me. I have to look at one of my dream cars just sitting in a garage with a coat of dust on it everytime I go there lol. He says if he ever decides to sell it, I can buy it, but I worry one of us will die before that happens at this point lol.
im buying this as my first car, I drive my moms mazda 3 6spdMT atm. Aside from the snap and over steer thing, its not like im gonna rip this car everywhere, itll just be a fun daily reliable sports car
I currently drive a stock gen 3, it's a quick and agile little guy. I'm about a week out from buying a BRZ though, so rip mr2. But, while it's stock, it is literally the best cornering vehicle I've ever driven in mountains.
I'm keeping mine till I die. Planning on 2gr swapping mine once I'm done with school. My brother has one too, I wanna buy-it off him so I can have two or get him to swap his too.
I own a 93 mr2 turbo and absolutely will not give up this car. It would take me an offer almost three times the current asking price on these to even consider selling it! Prices are only going up on them and they are not a death trap people... you just shouldn't be driving a vehicle with a near 50/50 weight distribution if you think it's going to kill you and cant control under weight shift. Most reasons why people cant hold on to these and end up failing modding them is because they are pre OBD and cost a lot to upgrade electronically if you go for over 350hp to crank. Beautiful car and glad too see my own car get some praise finally! You can have your SOUP-BRUH!
I’ve got a modified ‘89 Supercharged MR2. I’ll take it over a SW20 any day,,,,, but hey,, that’s just me. I’ve had 4 AW11’s so I guess I’m a fanboy! LoL
Ended up getting a 3rd gen about a year ago 😅 love it to death and the mr2 is a fun car but a body kit and some wrap to cover up half the off-brand porsche headlights is going to be needed. Its a bit bug faced.
There is a guy in Denmark who took a third gen Mr2/MrS and found that a 3.2 Vr6 engine swaps in scarily well. Like no frame changes, no firewall cutting, and all of a sudden your meh looking (from the factory) mid rear car has twice the power and the (arguably) best engine note for an engine 6 cyl or less.. that has been on my mind since I saw his videos driving around in it (swap complete). Look it up. Feckin bonkers. And just getting a little sideways when you arent even full into it pulling away. Sounds like so much fun.
Divergence Crew snap oversteer happens when there is a sudden disruption in weight transfer, as long as you don’t brake suddenly for a corner you’re a-ok. Besides you can correct it by counter steering it or letting go of the wheel before you spin out to redirect itself. The only reason why the MR2 is known as death trap is because of it’s suspensions which can increase chances of disrupted weight transfer thus snap oversteering. Basically just slap better suspensions and drive professionally in a MR2 and you’re a-ok. (Note: snap oversteer tends to make cars go tail first until it finds its balance)
@@pekonomials5246 pretty good explanation. Letting off throttle mid turn can also cause this, especially with the first two generations. I'm hoping to get a RHD turbo Sw20 in the next couple years personally 🤞
Divergence Crew this is basically what i looked up for before driving my very own SW20, also had to correct it since as a student driver have to drive like a decent human being.
@@FitmentIndustries Figured as much, the second gen is definitely more openly accepted in the car community. Ps I know you got some more sema footage of Dakota and Gels geeking out while they review the cars, and the people want to see it
as someone that has all of them. 2 Gen1, 2 Gen2, and 3 Gen3 every body panel comes off the Gen3 yes we need more people making body kits for it. and with a little work you can make it crazy. and yes it is the best handling of them all. and right now the price is right to get them. Gen 2 Turbos the price is crazy on them now. but you can fix up an NA gen2 and get all the fun.
I daily a v6 91, it gets 25ish mpg, is relatively comfortable and quiet on the road, is fairly quick - even when compared to newer sports cars, and has a surprising amount of trunk space. I have an entire tool set (enough to take the entire car apart anywhere) in the front trunk, and still have the entire rear trunk for storage.
My DD is an S2000 AP2 and I still miss my MK2 MR2 turbo, I'll have another one one day. I know this is like saying "My current carry is a Glock 19 but I miss my S&W M&P9." but something about an MK2 MR2 is magical.
2ndgen MR2 is going to be hit with that classic Nostalgia tax pretty soon. You either fix a bunch of things wrong with highly modded ones or pay an exorbitant amount for a near stock one because there are not a bunch of these left sale at any given time.
So you want: Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 Ford Focus SVT Nissan Sentra SE-R Honda Civic Si I figured since you did the MR2 and it’s one of my grail cars from the 90’s-00’s I figured I would give you the rest of them so you can make videos on those. Also to answer your question if I were able to get one of these? I would probably get the 3rd Gen due to the looks, and wanting the convertible; but I see your points about the second gen probably being the better deal for mod-ability, reliability, and stock quickness.
As a former MR2 owner I always put it like this.....get a 1st gen if you want a high revving, good handling, and a 80's feeling car. Get a 2nd gen if you want looks and power as they are the heaviest and do not handle as well as the 1st and 3rd gen. Get a third gen if you want a raw driving experience. 3rd gens handle the best but are funny looking.
I was really stoked for this vid and as usual, you guys delivered. Thanks for putting all the time and effort into these, makes my lunch break something I look forward to even more 😊💖 (psssst...I know it’s like the third time I’m bugging you about this...So You Want An AE86 & LFA...because that would be sick, and Toyota is wonderful ❤️)

Makes actually somewhat usable daily driver car considering how compact it is, trunk/frunk space is good
MR2 is sick. They are fun lol. A turbo, different paint job, and a little lowering makes it a pretty mean one
I swear I love when Alex does the “so you want” videos bro personality is perfect for this makes it that much amazing to watching. Great vids guys 💯🙌
Got my SW20 this past fall. Currently building it and will definitely be getting parts from FI!
The to fastest cars of his city being mr2s owned by brothers are kind of a parallel universe rx7s
Ishahakatchi bruh
I have an 89’ MR2 and i love it so much. Especially with the t tops off
I have the mr2 spyder with a 2zz swap and there's plenty with k20 swap out there as well as a few with the 2gr swap. It's an underated car and I like the fact that not many people are aware of how good it is. Its my favorite and its better value for money than a lotus elise
Fuck. You.
Bought myself one about a month ago and can’t get enough of it! Aw11 85 😍
WHEELS, TIRES, AND SUSPENSION FROM FITMENT INDRUSTRIES.
cough are you selling her? :D
I just bought an AW11 as my first car!
The first time I saw an MR2 was in Gran turismo 1 and back then I was surprised that Toyota even made a car like that.
I don't know why there's so much hate on the 3rd gen. It has the potential to look and perform better than then the others.
As an MR2 owner, that's a great video with loads of correct informations. Thanks Alex, that was lovely to watch and listen!🙏
Had both the MR2 and now the Supra. Love them both very much, an MR2 will never let you down :)
My brother had the first mk1 MR2 in central Florida in 85. It was a cool car. I remember a large group of exotic cars driving to a show. They saw the MR2 and opened up a gap for us to join in. Sweet.
“So you want a 300zx” please
Man, my first GENII I bought in 1995 in was a '92NA loved it up until 2002, sold it and bought the rare hard top factory turbo! Owned it all the way until 2019... What a run of MR2's good part of my life...
I had a Gen 1 and 2 MR2, and loved them both!
I'm so glad you guys made this video. The W20's been my dream car for years now
YES THIS IS MY EPISODE LAST TIME YOU DID G35'S AND 350Z'S. THANKS FOR DOING THIS EPISODE FOR ME
This little car means a lot to me.
2:21 those gaz prices tho
Try living in the UK then complain. Paying £1.28/litre which is roughly $8.18 per gallon
First car that I purchased myself was an 88 MR2 with wheels and T-Tops. Loved that car.
I’m literally in love with my mr2. Awesome car
Love love love my 2. Had to watch this video twice. It's also a HUGE pain to work on, but when I look at it I can't wipe that stupid smile off my face.
I WANT MR2 SO BAD!!!😭
michax175 get one you won’t regret it one bit! I own a mk1 and had it for about 3 years now and don’t have any plans on replacing it anytime soon. I daily mine everyday and some how i make it work. Hopefully this motivates you to get one. It’s such a great car.
Same
I have a gen 3 and you will not regret it a bit, sooo much potential with the mid engine platform, the exotic looks and the body kits you put on it, doing a k swap would be the ultimate engine swap
Watched yesterday, but rewatching the reupload for the culture
🙌🏼
I currently drive a stock gen 3, it's a quick and agile little guy. I'm about a week out from buying a BRZ though, so rip mr2.
But, while it's stock, it is literally the best cornering vehicle I've ever driven in mountains.
Mr2’s are underrated and I can’t wait til they blow up. Then I’ll sell mine for top price
I'm keeping mine till I die. Planning on 2gr swapping mine once I'm done with school. My brother has one too, I wanna buy-it off him so I can have two or get him to swap his too.
@@J.NOBODY.1 i think the car would die before you 9 times out of 10
@@pancake5830 I mean its a Toyota tho, these things run forever. Hard to kill a Toyota but we shall see.
@@J.NOBODY.1 that's what I thought so too, until mine broke lol
@@flowzion dam what happened if you dont mind me asking?
LoL
im on my second lol its a 1.5 :D
@@glas5eye OK ,,please explain this whole 1.5 thing,,what are the differences?
I love my aw11s, theyre so much fun when they actually run
Ended up getting a 3rd gen about a year ago 😅 love it to death and the mr2 is a fun car but a body kit and some wrap to cover up half the off-brand porsche headlights is going to be needed. Its a bit bug faced.
I dunno, I really like the front end. Looks kinda cute not gonna lie lmao. Like a mid-engined touge frog
@@Salsa_ it grew on me too after owning it for 3 months
There is a guy in Denmark who took a third gen Mr2/MrS and found that a 3.2 Vr6 engine swaps in scarily well. Like no frame changes, no firewall cutting, and all of a sudden your meh looking (from the factory) mid rear car has twice the power and the (arguably) best engine note for an engine 6 cyl or less.. that has been on my mind since I saw his videos driving around in it (swap complete). Look it up. Feckin bonkers. And just getting a little sideways when you arent even full into it pulling away. Sounds like so much fun.
MR2: The suicidal death trap
Lando Calrissian I bet you’re such a good driver. You can drive mid engine? Holy fuck. Teach me daddy.
Misconception. Do you know what makes snap oversteer happen? Enlighten everyone
Mr2 actually has loads of storage space. Moved house with mine ! 😂
“Put down that hair gel and Initial D”
Thanks for talking about it, not many people know how awesome it is:)
Looks like the MR2 3rd gen used the Carrera gt styling
Maybe people looked at it and think discount Carrerra GT instead of a class of its own anymore
I bought a 91 Mr2 last year and its been a fun daily for me
thought we were getting it yesterday, haven't watched yet but curious to see your views on it
UA-cam wasn't working for us well yesterday so we moved the upload to today
Do a video on cars that come with almost perfect Fitment Stock
I daily a v6 91, it gets 25ish mpg, is relatively comfortable and quiet on the road, is fairly quick - even when compared to newer sports cars, and has a surprising amount of trunk space. I have an entire tool set (enough to take the entire car apart anywhere) in the front trunk, and still have the entire rear trunk for storage.
Never even talked about the engine, 2nd gen was known for the 3S-GTE, not 'just' its looks.
My DD is an S2000 AP2 and I still miss my MK2 MR2 turbo, I'll have another one one day. I know this is like saying "My current carry is a Glock 19 but I miss my S&W M&P9." but something about an MK2 MR2 is magical.
So you want a Toyota Cressida, please
2ndgen MR2 is going to be hit with that classic Nostalgia tax pretty soon. You either fix a bunch of things wrong with highly modded ones or pay an exorbitant amount for a near stock one because there are not a bunch of these left sale at any given time.
i cant believe he didnt mention the 3rd gen came with a sequential manual trans.
Petrolheads dont talk about trash autos
YESSSSS! Y’all made this video!!🙏🏽I love my 91 MR2, love y’all a content ❤️
yup just came home from a lockdown :)
So you want:
Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege
Mazda Mazdaspeed 6
Ford Focus SVT
Nissan Sentra SE-R
Honda Civic Si
I figured since you did the MR2 and it’s one of my grail cars from the 90’s-00’s I figured I would give you the rest of them so you can make videos on those.
Also to answer your question if I were able to get one of these? I would probably get the 3rd Gen due to the looks, and wanting the convertible; but I see your points about the second gen probably being the better deal for mod-ability, reliability, and stock quickness.
'the average joe like you and me' didnt you just get yourself a ferrari alex? 😂😂
The 3rd Gen is for when you're retired? Ever watched videos of those lapping the Nürburgring? K swapped, 2zz swapped..
Luca Ballardini engine swap change it a lot lol
Or even stock with coilovers faster than a tesla.
Channel's called fitment industries, they care about looks not performance.
@@paynekaufmann403 2zz is still the same block wit a little more power an lift. Not that big of a change. It's not lame in stock form either.
Fuck the K swap
At 3.41 god that MR-2 looks beautiful when it came as brand new.🤤🤤🤤🤤
Yes I been asking for this!!
Let's use this video to get the aftermarket scene to show the AW11 some love

Ae86?
Had an '86 MR2. Spun a bearing. Didn't give af. Had a blast.
*snaps oversteer
The best underrated engine swap from Toyota on a MR-S and 2nd gen MR-2, is 2.4L 2AZ-FE. With a bolt on turbocharger kit. Make it up to 305 hp and 288 ibs pounds of torque. It would be epic
howd you hear about my swap?
