  • Ever considered a boost instead of an overdrive? Here’s why you might want to…
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I are playing through a handful of new(ish) boost pedals while discussing how you might want to use a boost in your rig. Whether it’s a simple make-louder device or, more likely, you want to push something else into overdrive, the choices are many and varied.
What can we learn from this selection to help us all understand The Ways Of The Boost a little better? Let’s get into it…
Yes, we know there are many other boosts available, and leaving any of them out seems like some kind of unforgivable crime against humanity. But hey, we have what we have today, and these are they.
Q: But but but but… I just want to get louder, not to go into heavy overdrive?!
A: Any of these apart from the Cornish will enable you to do that - you just need an amp with plenty of headroom so the amp itself doesn’t overdrive. It’s all about headroom.
Q: What are the mic preamps Mick adjusts?
A: Glad you asked. We recently started using the Meris 440 Mic Preamps on our main guitar cab mics. They're a 500 Series all-analogue design that means we do less post-EQ tweaks (not that we ever did much to be fair). They seem to catch the dynamics and transients of the cabs / cab mics (Austrian Audio OC18) in a lovely way. Still getting used to them, but I'm a BIG fan. Mick here. We started using them at the end of 2021/beginning of 2022 I think. They go in to Universal Audio Apollo 8p interfaces.

It's funny. This whole thing is about BOOST. Yet most of these pedals are more than just a boost. Including mine, a Wampler dB-1. It's got a switchable buffer on the side. Its sort of a 1knob pedal. I actually don't use the buffer. And barely use the boost. Got 3 drives that can "boost" each other. Keep each gain turned down unless any song calls for it. Gain is noise and trying to keep that to the minimum.

Dan’s reaction when using the Heavy Water reflected my own the first time I plugged it in, and every time since to be honest.
I absolutely *love* that pedal. Add a little camouflange to make the top-end glisten and sparkle, maybe some univibe for movement, and I’m gone for days.
I think Thorpy should be considered for knighthood for services rendered to the human ear.
Wonderful show as always, killer playing throughout! Can’t wait for the treble booster show now, that’s probably the next frontier for me.

A fun thing about the Paisley and other TS-derived soft clippers: due to the inherent clean blend, a clean boost into them not only saturates the driving portion further, but also punches through with a louder clean. You can hear it here, where there’s sort of a separation between loud attack and later heavy saturation. It’s sort of strange to my ear but great at the same time. I love taking a dirtier boost (like another overdrive/preampesque pedal) and cranking it through a Paisley for a complex and articulate yet simultaneously crumbling drive.

Benson Germanium Boost into Source Audio Zio are my first two pedals in my chain. Individually they do what they are supposed to and sound amazing. Together they achieve my favorite overdrive sound. Simple and tons of mojo but sits perfect in the mix or cuts when you need it.

  • @slimturnpike

Heavy Water is an incredible pedal. One thing to add in your description is that the circuit of the 2nd boost, the one on the left, includes a pair of germanium diodes that begin to clip the signal musically as the boost level increases. So the two sides are pretty distinct. Running them together is, to use an overused term, glorious.

I just received a Pete Cornish TB-83 Extra Duplex Battery Free earlier this week, and tomorrow my Pete Cornish NB-3 arrives! I also have this single Pete Cornish TB-83 Extra that you have as well. Such an incredible pedal!
It's worth mentioning that Pete designed the TB-83 extra to be stacked on top of an already in-line TB-83 that never turns off. The TB-83 extra at full "volume" is the same as the TB-83 in-line. You really need to get some more and start stacking them to increase the magic!
The TB-83 was also specifically designed to be used with a Vox AC-30 channel without treble boost, so while trying it on different amps can be fun, it isn't really showcasing it at its best. Let's hear it with Dan's vintage vox on the regular channel!

Quick shout out to all using treble boosters-when I first got my A-man Beano Boost and jammed with it alone I thought man that’s pretty harsh…
As soon as bass and drums are added and I’m in the band mix, it’s a all-around weapon. I can throw it in front of any pedal and any amp I’ve set up (which yes, is always edge of break-up) and it always sounds great. I use it as a solo boost, to add more gain to a sound & roll guitar volume off to cut in mix but sit behind vocals, to go from already-huge-wall-crumbing noises to bananalands feedback…it’s A+++.

If anything, this exactly shows, why to run amps close to breakup and why boost after ovedrive is great idea. I understand, that someone who is running amp very clean with lots of headroom to spare might not be happy with boost after drives.
But here, stellar. Clearer, more articulate. Just great sound.

I have the J Rockett Mark Sampson Max. It's great for adding chime but you can also darken your sound with it, really useful. I have it on all the time and it makes everything sound so much better. I can't recommend it enough.

As always, came for the pedals - stayed for the playing. Both in the mood to engage with pedals and it's magical. Please jam together more!! :) Excellent amp choices too.
As far as boosts go, I can't recommend the Laney Steelpark boost enough. Multi-purpose gizmo, does clean boost, has a mid boost (TS Style) setting, a low-mid setting (fat), bass/treble controls and it stacks beautifully - into pedals, after pedals, into a clean or cooking amp. Does everything. Not to mention the excellent buffer it has. And it looks killer, comes in a lovely box, is built like a tank and it hovers around 100 bucks.

I’m all for this kinda booster mandate. Secret Chord by Spiral Electric FX (Tom Cram, ex DOD genius) is my current fav boost. 🤓

I love putting a couple of boosts together. Currently I'm using a J Rockett Blue Note with the RC Boost (v1). Great results.

When you do the Treble Booster episode, I hope you can include the Walrus Emissary Parallel Boost - an always on, must-have, essential for me (into both clean and dirt channels of the amp). Great episode as always and just loved the tones from the Thorpy (and Dan's feedback fun!!!)

Great Episode! My now most used pedal is actually a boost! But the Metropolous Supa Boost is a category of its own. It runs on 112V and is by no means comparable to any other boost.

I bought the blackstar department 10 boost and it’s exactly what I wanted to add a tube feel to my jazz chorus. Unfortunately my power supply doesn’t vibe well with it but it’s a great pedal. Highly recommended

I like the Zio alot. I'd also recommend the Boss GE 200 to folks. Use it for both acoustic and electric. Most useful pedal I've ever bought.

I've recently bought the Epoch Boost by Catalinbread and put it at the very end of my chain, after delays and reverbs. And it's like some magical glue that puts everything together in a pleasant chewy way.

FINALLY a Cornish pedal! About time! I really wish you guys would do a Cornish family comparison. They’re expensive, but it’s not like that’s stopped you guys before (automatone, tape delays etc) 🤓

There's a reason I flank my preferred overdrive pedal of the moment with two clean boosts. The one before gives me more saturation, the one after gives me more volume. The whole lot goes into my Mesa/Boogie F-50 loaded with KT66HP tubes for even more headroom. When you're dealing with a high headroom setup like this, the two boosts don't need to be turned up very high to have a large effect. Generally speaking, I run my boosts probably in the +3 to +6 dB range at most, if they are even that high, the knobs just barely off the minimum stops by about 30-45 degrees, tops. Depending on the overdrive, I will run either two tc electronic Spark mini boosters or two One Control BJFe Granith Grey boosters.

Great show guys! Consider doing an EP boost show. Mojo Hand Speakeasy, Xotic EP Booster, Catlinbread Epoch Boost, MXR Echoplex preamp. It would be great here all these EP style boost/preamp pedals in one show...

Great show as always ! And yeah, goes to show Marshalls eat boosts for breakfast...
For the next show on treble boosters, use the Marshall and the Vox that lurks in the background ! A Rangemaster into an AC30 is one of the quintessential blues/rock tones after all (and I can totally see Mick with one of his Strats -obviously- channeling some Rory Gallagher).
