Every session Jamerson played while at Motown was a standard P bass. Not only that - if I’m recalling correctly- he left the pup cover, and bridge covers on. He played between the two with the “ claw “ ie. Index finger, nothing more, and certainly never slapped …
Although not the lead singer Chris Squire's tight harmony vocals were integral to the Yes sound.

Not to mention try to play Close to the Edge and sing those background vocals. He was amazing.

I have a 62 rosewood neck Jazz, and a 57 RI P bass with maple neck - albeit forty one years old - I HATE the Jazz neck at headstock. It’s too narrow, especially if you’ve been playing a P bass. I would go P bass , Rick 4001, Carvin fretless - The most underrated basses ever made - and an Alvarez as top four for different tones , and you can’t mistake the difference in tone of each.

Skynyrd also had guys playing the Peavey T-40, which may not be iconic but it is absolutely the most underrated bass ever.
Also Krist Novoselic from Nirvana is totally a Tbird guy.

honestly, T-40 is iconic in my mine (I've got a '79) but from Journey to Chat Pile, versatility and tone
No one ever mentions the Rick bass on the intro to Eton Rifles - It's positively thunderous!
Honorable mention - Gibson EB-0 (Jack Bruce, Entwhistle, Bill Wyman)
...and Felix Pappalardi, the greatest of all EB-0 players!

The fact that Macca bought his Höfner 500/1 here in Germany and used it at the excessive gigs at Hamburg‘s Star Club still fascinates me so much. Being part of the infamous Reeperbahn-scene must have been just WILD! Period. 🎸 💃🏼 🕺🏼 🍸 💊 😂😂😂

For me, when I see a T-bird I always think about SOAD bass player Shavo Odadjian. about the list, stingrays are always my number 1, I love how they sound, how they look and how they feel, the perfect pickup spot for plucking for me, just feel home playing it. another thing that I like on MM basses is the quality consistency, It's very rare to find a bad stingray no matter the year you get.
I want to agree, but I've owned two, and they were night and day different. The first was one of the most gorgeous basses I've ever seen, and nothing could make it sound good. The G string was very weak, and it sounded like a cheap Squier. The other one is a basic no-frills model from the 80s, and it's pretty good. I do love the gigantic necks in them. I'll always have a fondness for the Stingray.
I have one of the older stingray sub,s & it plays and sounds GREAT!
Major props for mentioning Shavo, dude is super underrated in my opinion and has so many killer bass lines like on Sugar, Spiders, Chop Suey!, BYOB, Aerials, Mr. Jack and just everything from System's material. Such a killer player

41:20 in the middle of watching the hofner bit about Macca’s bass. He still plays that bass! The one with the “Bassman” sticker is the setlist bass. Setlist is still there, the bassman sticker is long gone. And, the Cavern Bass just returned to Macca after over 50 years. Cool stuff! 😄
The setlist is off the bass. Been so since late 90's early 2000's.
Yep the stickers are gone, as are the tape-wounds, but Macca still plays that bass on stage with flats.
right! anyway i cant imagine it to be 10 million bucks... that yamaha bb he used with wings is the most expensive bass guitar to this point

Cliff played the Aria Pro II Black n' Gold, an active variant of the SB-R60/SB Elite I.
Thanks for the information! I didn't know that the glorious Black"N"Gold was a passive bass. And to be honest, I easily understand that Cliff disliked the active electronic just as when I tried an SB1000 some 25 years ago, I remember having found it very crappy too.

Gibson ripper/ grabber basses are pretty iconic IMO
Am now 65 and I always wanted to play a Grabber 🎸
I played a Gibson Ripper during the latter 1970s. It was designed to produce a variety of useful tones and had a great neck. The downside was that Gibson's QC was really bad and the bass became basically unplayable in about five years. The varitone switch allowed the pickups to be played 1. both in series 2. bridge pickup only 3. both pickups in parallel which like a really muscular Jazz Bass 4. both pickups wired out of phase.. In addition, there was what Gibson called a "presence" control which was basically a midrange cut control. Eventhough it is a mess, I still have it for the memories.
56:05 totally agree and would absolutely "blame" the humbucker for that! I played a Stingray for over 10 years but with a HS setup (humbucker + single coil) and so often defaulted to the single coil setups, playing close to the neck to bring out the humbler side of the instrument!
I really appreciate the way Ian described the drawbacks of the Stingray. I had one and I couldn't figure out why I didn't love it. It sounded so cool by itself, but it didn't sit right in the mix for the style of music I play. I ended up trading it toward a G & L L-2500, which has 2 pickups and a more mellow sound, but could get closer to the Stingray when you flip the active switch, move to the bridge pickup, and boost the treble. But I didn't want that sound all the time, and the Stingray is always "ON". Great video!
I’ve an L2000. IMO the L2K series are Leo Fender’s best design, but they get way less attention than the P, Jazz and Stingray.
I love the banter and even though this video was an hour and 20 minutes, I could listen to another 40 minutes easily and then still want more ;)
Flats on a stingray helps a lot with the "issue" Ian had of it being to bright. It makes it sit better in the mix.

What a joy to watch and hear you guys! Just when I was thinking..it’s a shame the T-Bird didn’t make it..Ian finally came up with one…that really knocked me off!!
Immediately when I think of Gibson Thunderbird bassists, Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash comes to mind. One of the first songs I learned was "Handy" from their debut album.
Love the Rick discussion and Spacehog too! I had a new Jetglo Rickenbacker 4001 back in 1975. It was the most rockin' look every, but unfortunately, my bass had a super-thin floppy neck and never really sounded great. There was a low-cut filter on the bridge pickup back in those days that made that pickup sound extra wimpy. In the early 80's I sold it and missed the idea of it. A few years later, I happened to see a purple 4001 that was a few years older hanging in a guitar shop in San Francisco (it was the shop that used to be a laundromat). It had herringbone binding and the crushed sparkly inlays. I plugged that one in, and all of a sudden, I understood what the Rick was supposed to be! But the store knew that too, and it was major bucks. In recent years, I've played newer Ricks most of which have been really great. Last year I bought a new Jetglo 4003s and it's been great! Tried to get a V63 with the split horseshoe and toaster pickups, but never found one. I noticed that Rick has a listing to sell their horseshoe pickup on their site, but it was never in stock until Feb this year. Got it, haven't put it in yet, but really looking forward to it!

After almost 60 years, having had 2 JAzz basses, 2 P basses, 2 Ricks, a Hofner Beatle Bass , a Stingray and probably 20 plus other basses, my go to now is a G&L SB-2 w/PJ configuration and a maple board.

The reason for the pickup placement is so close to the bridge on the Stingray bass was suggested by Louis Johnson to Leo Fender. He didn't want the pickup in the way of his slap popping.

Paul D'Amour, in my eyes, is definitely worth mentioning when it comes to Rickenbackers. Recorded, & primarily toured a 4001CS for the Undertow album. Glorious.
The congested mid range on the P Bass help greatly leaving room for guitars and voice on the mix especially. And every mid range instrument of course. Unbeatable.

Vis à vis the Stingray & less standout tones, I would suggest listening to Paul Denman of Sade (esp. first album) - very sultry, smooth bass, although he pumps it up on the 'Snakebite' track.

The "bassmann" Hofner a 1963 model is the same one Paul uses live to this day, his first hofner a 1961 model "The Cavern" was stolen in 1972 and was found and returned to Paul in fall of 2023. I also still owns the rickenbacker he used in The Beatles.

I'm not a bass player, I'm hardly even a guitar player, but I am subscribed to your channel and I have lost countless hours watching you guys talking about stuff that goes right over my head! I love it even though half the time I can't tell the difference between the tones you all find SO different!!

I added a 3 way switch to my 77 musicman stingray, which gives coil tap, parallel or series wiring. What a massive range of sounds now available, so much better, now it has a throaty warm distortion option and a more "passive" P bass sound too - I may still have the wiring diagram somewhere
Great vid as always guys! Just some insight from personal experience when it comes to Stingrays; the secret sauce I’ve found is in a feature that only the fivers possess. The Series/Parallel toggle. I use my Stingray 5 in series mode only and it instantly brings down the glassy treble and boomy bass and sits more in the middle like a P bass. I completely agree with you guys on the fact that a Stingray more pokes through the mix than sits when in its standard parallel wiring but in series it’s a whole other bass. I have a Jazz, P, Dingwall and Stingray 5 and switching the ray from parallel to series transforms it from the last bass I’d pick up to the first. I wish the fours had the same feature. Give it a shot!

'76 Thunderbird was played exclusively by Pete Way of UFO, once it became available - ditched the P. Thunderbirds were also played by Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash, Chris Squire of Yes, Glenn Cornick of Jethro Tull/Wild Turkey.
glenn cornick had a home-made whammy on his too.
You guys are always informative and amusing! Among other basses I have several Rickenbackers and a Thunderbird. They both sound and play awesome but different; more grind and bark from the Rickenbacker and more solid, smooth sound from the T-bird. Does it neck dive? Yes, if you let it. I moved the strap button to behind the neck and use a grippy strap so it doesn't move much. It's not really heavy either, so I don't get fatigued playing it. And the neck is wicked fast.
My Ricks are newer models so they have the push/pull tone knob to engage or disengage a .0047uf cap to get the vintage clank or a more modern sound. I find them extremely versatile, with a very wide range of tones. Feels like they were made for me too, so they're a joy to play. I like how wel they take to any effects you throw at them, especially overdrive, chorus and flange. Their clear crisp tone really helps the effects work well without getting muddy.
Another bass you could have included that was played by Jack Bruce in Cream and by many others is the Gibson EB-3. Short scale, small body, big mudbucker in the neck position and a regular-sized humbucker for a bridge PU. I had a copy for a while, they're fun to play and downright dirty when you drive them hard, just listen to Bruce's live tone in the Cream days.
That Spacehog baseline is nostalgic. I remember first hearing it and my dad telling me it was a rickenbacker and that he hated the feel of them lol. Good times man
Top 5 for me: 1 to 4 Spector NS2 Kramer 1987, 5 Squier P-Bass JV-series.
The kids ministry at our church has a “little” trio of drums, bass and acoustic guitar that plays for kids worship on Wednesdays. One of the moms plays the bass. She plays a PJ through a 8x10 full stack. She’s an amazing bassist, and sounds absolutely killer.

professional ll Jazz last year with some money I got from graduating, I immediately fell in love with it even more then I thought I would. I have used it for every gig I’ve had in the past year and I can’t really ever see that changing. I have been truly hooked on the Jazz
I agree, I have played a jbass as my main for probably 15 years and it's just so flexible. Slap, tap, fingerstyle, p-bass-ish if you want, deep and scoop if you want, whatever you like. Plus that really fast neck.

The best sounding Stingray that I've heard is from Paul Denman, the bassist for Sade.

some time ago everybody wanted a short scale because of JMJ with his Mustang, and Nick Campbell with that Musicmaster, and than there's that beautiful Mullarky Wilcock bass, but did anyone see him use it at a concert recently? It seems like those 3 almost don't play their shortscales anymore ... I tried a Mustang for a while: at home it's great! It's the most easy bass to play bebop theme's, but than in a band (I play jazz...) it just won't work: to much sublows and the wrong mids ... (nice in rock, not in jazz to my taste) so than I go back to my P ... and so it seems did Nick Campbell ...

Fantastic video. If we had to elongate the honourable mentions list, I think it would feature basses such as the Gibson SG or the Guild Starfire.
Great stuff, gentlemen. My honorable mention would have to be the Spector NS-2. As for Nikki Sixx, he definitely used other basses (Spector, Hamer, Schecter) but I always associate him with the T-Bird design.
I have to agree with Scott. I believe The P-bass is the greatest all-time bass. I love the sound of My custom Schecter P-bass with Roto sound rounds on it. I would never sell that Bass. It sounds so awesome! For Rock and Metal music. Great video guys.🤘
Thunderbird is the coolest bass ever. The fact that it neck dives straight into hell and is not universal (my bandmates forced me to buy another bass to be more noticeable) but is still played and adored proves it rules.

Hi Scott and Ian (and al working behind the scenes). I am a guitar player, and have been accompanying a singer songwriter for over ten years. 90% of our gigs we play as a duo, the other 10% we are joined by a percussionist, and in 2% of the gigs we are joined by a bassist. He is 79 now and artritis makes that he feels his playing is not up to parr.
For some songs, when we play as a duo or trio I grab the bass.
Lately I’ve been playing a Ukulele bass. It is easier on my hands and sounds really good.
I would like to see you guys step out of your comfort zone and review some Uke basses.

I almost followed Scott's advice on purchasing order of basses! I started with a Fender P Bass, figured start at the beginning. Then I found a really fun, relatively inexpensive Hofner Violin bass, so grabbed that one. Than saved up (sort of) and grabbed a classic Rickenbacker 4001. I love them all for different reasons. Flatwounds on all three!
I’m a bit older than you boys and I think you hit the top five perfectly but there were some other basses that caused a buzz in the 60s that influenced future basses and we upstart bass players starting with the EBO (my first decent bass) that Jack Bruce used in Cream, the 8 string Hagstrom Noel Reading used with Hendrix, the EB2 that Jack Cassidy used with Hot Tuna and Chas Chandler used with the Animals and the piccolo bass Stanley Clarke made famous in the early 70s with Weather Report and his solo works. I can see you having fun with these. By the way, I just swapped my 70s 10+lbs Jazz bass for a Music Man because it cuts through the band and much lighter. It seems to work with my Eden and house PAs better to my ears. You should talk more about the amp/speaker tones and comparisons since that’s the other half of the equation. You are always fun to watch!
