Developed by The Bitmap Brothers and published by Image Works in 1990
This ultra-violent future-sports title is commonly regarded as one of the greatest games the Bitmaps created, not to mention being one of the defining multiplayer experiences on the Amiga.
In my original 2014 video I made the mistake of trying to train up the default player squad, rather than buying replacements from the transfer market.
For this video, we take Brutal Deluxe to the top of division 1 once again, building a team of some the ugliest bad-asses to ever hurl a steel ball!
So, grab some ice cream and enjoy Speedball 2 in QHD!

Ice cream ! Ice Cream !
Everyone here who played this game as an underage kid, is now at least 40 years old, or almost 50 if a teenager !
Dinged 40 in December. This comment stands the test ha
45 😭
50 later this year
Was 51 in January
42 😂
I'm not lying when I say that I just bought an Amiga500+1084 monitor just so I can play this game again with original feeling 😂
Money well spent.
the floppy disks are still working properly ?
@@sebastientoccupe5704 speedball2 loaded perfectly, many others didnt :/
@@samilaakso2928 have you found any ways to recover them ?
i have A500 ( i bought it 1992) but i play on emulator. Nowadays it does not make difference, TBH. I played my Amiga last time six years ago (testing purposes) and all disks loaded well. But again: winuae is now so well developed it makes no difference. Before i had hard time to make emulator to emulate Amiga's famous smooth scrolling, but now it works well. Also most demos are working. Only thing i miss is old CRT, LCD is not exactly same.
Ice cream! Ice cream!
Big shout out to all those who were there to experience this game, great times and fond memories!
oh yes. Great memories. I really loved my Amiga 500. So many awesome games!
yep, I'd even go so far as to say the games were even more groundbreaking than the mighty ZX Spectrum, they pushed that tiny little 8 bit CPU / 48 KB of ram to incredibly artistic games, considering the limitations of the hardware, I learnt assembly language and only then did I truly comprehend the sheer brilliance of those guys who wrote the code, especially the later years from companies like Ultimate...@@HaveAniceDay2450
Can't wait till 2095 to go sit in the crowd, watch this brutal sport be played and finally get me one of them goddam icecreams
😁😁😁😁
Actually this game needs no comments but because of respect: This game was the best piece of software on the amiga! After you wrecked your joysticks in the player mode you can try the manager mode, but keep the save disc near you! Masterpiece!
I broke more joysticks on this game...
😄
@@alanguiney2133 Those damn microswitches on the Quickshot joysticks couldn't handle what Speedball II threw at 'em!
i can never go back in time and own an amiga fresh in its original days... its impossible to do this
Had this in the 1990s on my Amiga. Got a shock recently when, at the age of 45, I went into Guildford museum and they had a whole section devoted to the Amiga including copies of Amiga Power magazine that I used to read! Certainly a sobering moment when you find your youth ensconced into a museum piece. They also had a whole section on Bullfrog which was based in Guildford and I remember writing really bad democracy and politics games in Amos Basic on my Amiga and hoping to send it to Bullfrog to get a job with them, but sadly I only ever managed to do quite a lot of the graphics and never really got the games to function properly as games, although I remember reading and interview with Pete Molyneux and he said "I can teach anyone to program in C in a few months but I can't teach game ideas" which kind of gave me hope. Speedball 2 was a monster of a game and it might be quite fun in future decades if we get robots to play a version of it, could be a good sport.
A beautifully designed game. The whole thing fitted into 512K.
Back in the day, Bitmap Brothers were unbeatable. They just put out hit after hit.
This gets my heart racing. The goal at 6:34 was poetry! I ended up more a fan of the manager mode which was really hard to beat, especially if you made it to 1st division. Thanks for sharing :)
Ice cream!!
34 jahre später sitze ich hier, warte auf "ice cream, ice cream" und wurde nicht enttäuscht...geiles spiel damals
An absolute solid gold classic! Jaw dropping back then and still jaw dropping now in the 21st century.
Great game I played this so much on the commodore Amiga. Excellent work my friend big like
One of my favourite games. I remember receiving it in the post, and so excited to play it. It's so smooth and polished, still looks good today. I couldn't believe how good it was, and the atmosphere was really exciting. Great graphics, sound, music and gameplay
Same for me. My first game. My parents bought it for me on my ATARI ST520. I remember me opening the "parcel" from the postman. This awesome box (I still have it). The killing soundtrack of the game. And the game istself. Uzzzzz. Spent hours and hours and hours. Eager for transfering these bad guys in my team. I made dreams of this game. This game is a magical thing in my childhood. I even wonder if I would be the same guy now without Speedball 2. Thank you BITMAP BROTHERS. Thank u fans of this incredible game. We lived a fantastic gaming era.
@@maurizio76 @Maurizio76 Awesome to hear your recollection of it. I still got the box too and remember how new it all was. One of my first games too. The star players were so cool and totally OP.
@@maxm17 OMG. Yes, the star players. What a thing. I will keep their charismatic faces on my mind forrrrrever. They were kind of heroes for me. Ah ah. And no hope to face the FATAL JUSTICE without getting your dear bully mercenaries aside you. Upgrading your casual players was not the way. I'm not sure but you were limitated at 220 for each perk. So each time I could hear the transfer bell, it was just like Christmas 🎄🎄🎄. And the star players in division One. 250 xp. Just wooooaaaaa 😋. Have a good day, pal.
This game was the ultimate joystick destroyer :D love love LOVED playing this on Amiga 500
I'll rate your gameplay 8/10. A few tricks missing. For example, when fighting for the double points you can just stand still punching as it is a stronger attack than the slide kick and you can stand on top of the opposing player after punching him. But more importantly the plan for each match should be:
1. Double points
2. Collect coins
3. Win by biggest margin possible after all coins collected
Holy crap I used to play this game all the time, so many memories.
Of all the games I've played in that era, this in the only one that's still unmatched and still worth playing today (works great with WinUAE and a gamepad). I've put it in the hands of younger gamers and they've had a blast !
My friend lent me his Amiga game, came on 2 discs. Somehow I broke it. When he got it back he said it never worked again, weird because for me it did, so have no idea what happened.
What a fantastic game it was, and I wish Speedball would hurry up and be invented in real life. I'm a Super Nashwan fan, of course.
'Mon the 'Wan!
i am in my mid 50s and this brings back hours of memories. absolutely loved this game.
When my best friend and I we were young adults, long after obsessively playing this game as a kids he and I put together a team in an organized ice hockey league. Our team name was the "Raw Messiahs". I can't even begin to tell you how many time we got asked "What the hell does that mean??". haha
This game came out in December 1990 and became an instant classic
I might be in the minority, but I really liked the basic team manager mode. It was pretty tricky to get them into the first league.
I really enjoyed this mode too, after playing the other modes a lot.
“My earliest and most stand-out memory of Speedball 2 was figuring
out how to draw and animate the characters in a forced plan view in
eight directions, and make them look good in relation to the actual
pitch and walls. The graphical look had to be something original so
we ended up with a polished futurism style with an almost cathedral
everence, plus edge - lots of it! One thing I look back on fondly is the
name ‘Brutal Deluxe’ which is a combination of words from a tune
called ‘This Brutal House’ by Nitro Deluxe - a favourite tune at
the time. I’m really proud of Speedball 2, it’s my best game.”
-- Dan Malone (graphic design - Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe)
Graphics so dam good for game developed 33 years ago
Bitmap Brothers games always were very polished and technically brilliant. But they always used the same colour scheme. And most of their games didn't interest me. I never played Cadaver, I put GODS away soon as well as Xenon 1 and 2 and The Chaos Engine. But I really liked Speedball 2 though. This is one of my alltime favourites, when it comes to sports games. Excellent gameplay, graphics and sound. I wished there were more leagues and an expanded manager part in this game. To me it is still a wonder how very well it played with a one button competion pro joystick. And the (hard) difficulty was just right. Not unfair, but not as easy as in most today's sports games like FIFA and so on. It was really challenging. There should be a really good enhanced remake of Speedball 2.
Mark Coleman mettalic graphics is what I loved about Bitmap games. They looked so distinctive from anything back then.
For exsctly trh same reason the still look different and modern.
I wish Mark Coleman was designing game graphics again.
I'm not a fan of sports games, but this is a bonafide classic. I mostly watched my brothers play, but I appreciated the gorgeous sound and visuals.
'The Chaos Engine' was the Bitmap Brothers game that hooked me. The same perspective and style, but I was always more of a shoot'em-up guy.
Loved this game so much! The customising of players and crunching tackles!
Great game! I finished it many times. Super Nashwan and Fatal Justice are really hard.
Ice Cream!
Goosebumps…
You can't stop playing this game. It's just perfect
I remember playing this to death on the Genesis. My mom heard me swear so many times. "It's not me mom. It's the game. It's so frustrating."
Once my Dad joined in, and he got very offended when we kept saying "You scumbag!"
But it was not personal! You just have to call your opponent that.
I've seen domestic "fights" start over this game!! Hugely fun game.😄
Oh man you're playing all my favourites. I played this recently on Amiga Forever but the keys were laggy. Anyway.... Bitmap Brothers RULE!
It's a commercial Amiga emulation package released by Cloanto. It includes a whole bunch of Amiga games and legally licensed kick ROMs 🙂
Glad you're enjoying them - my QHD and 4K videos seem to be popular, so it gives me the excuse to revisit some of my favourite Amiga games 😀
Why did you play it with the keyboards?
@@patsfan4life
It's the only peripheral I have that can be used for this game. Back in the day, I used a joystick.
I still love this game and would love to see a really good reboot
I’m 40 now a remember as a kid going to bulmers pawn shop in York and buying this. Loved the game.
Loved to play this game again loved it when i was young
Score multipliers are very important if not the first targets to go for, then getting cash and the powerups. There is also a trick shot you can play along the side edges and get all 5 stars in one shot.
wish I could play this again, makes me so nostalgic. no game compares to it.
If you get an emulator and Rom for it you can play easily.
I'm 36 and wanted to hear the soundtrack as this game was incredible
Ice cream...Ice cream
greatest game EVER made. period.
what about this then ? ua-cam.com/video/wFtLGDywZlg/v-deo.html
@@richarddrenka i never had that one, but mario brothers / alex kid style games never grabbed me. love the music though!!
The best part was picking your new mutant players! Classic!!!
Ah yes, the game where you toss the ball to the rival's team goalkeeper just so you can knock him down while he catches it, take the ball back and score....
Good times!
Ice cream, Ice cream
I had this for the Mega Drive. Loved it. The Amiga version is slightly better of course, the field looks better and then there's the ice cream sample. Other than that they're basically the same.
Great playing! I like it when you look goal replays on best efforts. That bounce-from-a-wall-and-catch seems to be your speciality on goals.
Powerball was my favorite back then, I was just throwing the ball back and forth to powerball icon and computer player got injured very fast catching it all the time.
Powerup with "zero" sign was rare but sometimes it was a decider. When you hit that thing @2:31:01 very close you could double hit it. Using "zero" and double points you could easily make 60-80 points in five seconds as it gives 8 points per hit.
Btw. I have never seen computer scoring to own goal until now!
Sorry if this question is out of place, but how do the ports of this stack up against each other? Amiga seems to be the definitive one, but I was wondering about the others (not only micro computer versions but also console and portable versions). The game seems super fun and the feel reminds me of the kinds of great games Electronic Arts made for the Mega Drive in its early life (like Mutant Football League).
From the videos I've seen, the Mega Drive port of Speedball 2 looks the part well enough, but I wonder about gameplay mostly, since it's vital for a game like this.
I've never played the other versions, but I will cover them at some point 🙂
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays this will be interesting to see. Thanks!
The Amiga CD32 version of SpeedBall 2 has more colours than the 16 bits Amiga version (and you'll agree that "more is not necessarily better"), but that's the only difference if I remember correctly. The PC port was as fast as the Amiga version, but with coarse graphics and shit sounds. The Megadrive port was the worst I played, with simpler play area (there's a grid on the ground, the large star in the middle is missing) and shit sounds too. I never played the Atari ST port, but it should be slightly worse than Amiga 16 bits, as usual.
The megadrive version is a very faithful conversion in terms of gameplay - it's basically identical in that regard - graphically not so good though
@@lucarnetrange I always felt the st version played a bit faster than the Amiga version but with worse graphics. I think the st version was actually the first out. Agree the mega drive version is pretty poor.
Thos game was so much fun, I wish they would remake this game for modern consoles!!!
Best gameplay ever
448 points against the messiahs. you didn't let up lol
Ci giocavo come un dannato al pc😂😂 amo questo gioco
Storming norman ... l,loved this game
Well, one thing about this gameplay. I would definitely hit the gym and max out to 220 all stats. You could do this with the bought players as well. The bench needed to be upgraded simply

I could have sworn you recently posted a Killing Game Show video... am I going insane or did you delete it?
Wasn't me - not done a video on it (yet) 🙂
Brutal game indeed... I think I was messing around with the game modes and matched up against a maxed out hard team... the face portraits were a bit intimidating lol.
this is by far my all time favourite game. they released it on PlayStation at one point, but my god iwish they'd bring it back, just as it was back in the day. such a brilliant game.
i bought this on steam a few months ago, plays ok
Classic! Love Speed Ball 2.. I had a normal version Atari and a version that was cracked on Amiga in which you could do things like press Z and all the opposing team would fall over as if you'd picked up that power up.. great times..."Ice cream! Ice cream!"
first time I see this game in color and with sound 😂
Best goddamn game ever made
One of the greatest games of all time. Man did I spend hours on this...
hex edited credits on safe disc & ravaged 1st division with ease
Bitmap brothers were the developers that were all over the amiga 500
I spent more hours playing this and Chaos Engine than I care to admit!
Who spent more time and dedication on this and other a500 games than they do on todays games?
This looks like an actually fun game. Now compare it to sports games of today...
Makes me wish I never sold my Amiga 500+ :( My parents bought me a dirt bike, but they said I had to chip in some so I sold it. In retrospect it wasn't that bad a deal, but still... can always get a dirt bike, not so easy to get a great condition Amiga 500 anymore... not to mention I had 100s of games, two joysticks, the lot...
Used to LOVE this as a kid. Even now that music kick ass. Can't remember fully if you only had 4 Seasons to play / win, or whether it was after the first Season my team always got beaten into the ground along with multiple career ending injuries. They talk about advances in computer Bots and A.i nowadays but way back then in the days of the Amiga, that computer cheated !! With my shots seemingly bouncing off the other teams goal post, hitting the power up / double score, through the loop thing and being thrown into my net by the enemy teams striker - usually crippling my Goalie in the process. Yep it cheated Or I was rubbish at it ? At least you could get Ice Cream 🍦 and the Music was tops. Happy Days.
you only had 2 season max.
Season 1 you either got promoted or you die.
Season 2 you either won the first division or you die.
By that point, your team was so powerful the game was pretty much over anyway.
Crystal cracked....
ooo yes ;) Gotta love the 1990s pirate scene!
There should make the film 🎉
Does anyone remember the cheat so your team were ballistic ?
Did anyone ever play Speedball 1?
Me.
Wow finally a compelling reason to emulate the Amiga 😀
I had this game on my Master System! One of my fav games!
Loved this game back in the day, and this is still the best version. The CD32 version is much uglier because they're using too many colors, same thing with The Chaos Engine.
Graphics still look good. And I just saw that stupid ass HD remake that looks horrible.
You should swap your best players to the centre. E.g Jams
I can only imagine what 'Violent DS' stands for?
Violent Desires
I could never beat the 2nd Season...
They need to re do this on aystation be awsome online
The only game that makes all sports games so boring!

C sta aria d festa regala qualche abbonamento per favore 🤑🎩 LOL ciao
The PC version was much superior, especially if you had a Creative Labs Sound Blaster
No.
Yeah, if you enjoyed less colours, no atmosphere sounds playing and a pretty poor rendition of the original music, I can see how the PC version would appeal!!
@@Galahadfairlight I was thinking the same. I had the Atari ST then the Amiga. Lastly I got a PC and the box set of Bitmap Brothers. First thing was the lack of colours then the poor sound track. Xenon 2 and Speedball 2 on the Amiga was the best one, out of the three. PC was last. Still got my Amiga and all it's games. Sold my Atari and the PC version went in the bin.
