Nice video. I personally like my vocals a little warmer. This mix seems a little thin for me but I did learn a couple of things from your techniques. Nice work man.
As a SOUND ENGINEER, You Should Apply the Deesser before Compressing, You want to get rid of all the unwanted Frequencies, Yeahh you can apply after compression also but first get rid of that slingy Sssh Sound. Nice Tutorial Though
Thanks for the tip man. In some cases, that’s what I do. I felt the artist vocals in particular meshed nice with the beat and applying the DeEsser at the end took out the right amount of unwanted frequencies in my opinion. Appreciate you taking the time to help though!
The Music Producer's Community is growing day by day, thanks to the internet, where Guys like you Show your skill for the benefit of other Producers, Good Work, One more Tip If you have vocals that have kinda squisy and have Room noise in them, First of all load Audio Track in the studio rack and then adjust the gate and you can do a slight EQ there, now follow whatever you have shown in the video is the right way to approach for a Good Mix. As a sound engineer at Record Plant in Hollywood. That’s an ignorant statement, there are no rules when it comes to music. Second, so many times if you stack your compressors right, with the right attack and release settings, the right microphone, sometimes you don’t even need a DeEsser, there was actually no deEssing on Carter 5! And many more. You’d be surprised. Just do what ever til it sounds good! No rules!
great tutorial man, i was surprised you didnt use the waves CLA2 or the CLA76 compressors 😎 you made those vocals sound great even though they was recorded pretty low
I love both but recently I’ve had a lil trouble with the 76 compressor it’s been sounding a little harsh for me. But adding more compression sound too much.
Can you make a Video about which level should we record vocals, like how we need to set up our gear so that our records sounds not to quiet or to loud? Thx you and really helpful video!
Would of been nice to have a before and after. Also, since you are already mostly there, why not do reverb to share a solid rough draft of the mix? Good video and tips. Also, you can slap another compressor on there. Vocals are highly dynamic and can handle it. I liked how you didn't do a crazy ratio. 2-4 is the sweet spot for sure. Mixing was good. Keep it up!
Hmm, what about setting the Attack higher than 2ms? Especially for rap vocals, higher attack means you can hear the consonants better and they "pop" more. Just a lil bit, maybe around 5ms? Release needs to be short tho for a better enuncuation effect. Oh and thanks! My mix sounds much better now!
The best way is to record track vocals raw. This way you can have more control over what you want to do with the recording. Also, if you add effects meanwhile recording, this can use up more resources from your computer, which can generate more lag in the audio
yo Key, since compressor brings lows & highs in level aka rides it more or less evenly - isn't that the same for the vocal rider? whats the actual difference
wassup bro? Diggin the tutorials man! I had a quick question. Is using the waves studiorack any different than me using an audio effect rack in ableton? thanks
Thanks man! I'm not too familiar with audio effect rack for ableton since I'm not an ableton user, but I do know that using StudioRack will help with latency when applying these vocal chains, not to mention it helps with keeping your mixer slots clean and organized. Hope that still helps!
hey Key, How do i find my plugins using studio rack? when I try to add in plugins it says no plugins available in my plugin list :/ (ps Im using Ableton and all my plugins are installed and working)
After - in my opinion the best decisison. But monitor it while you recording giving you best performance I think. Then you put on after recorded (you already know what tune you need to get the result while recording) but still can go in depth and give it more or less.
i learned alot from this video & everything, but shiiiiid whats the name of THIS song and where can i find it?! i searched everywhere! that link doesnt have THIS song.
@@inlovingmemoryofdouglasmul5216 you need to use f6-rta (other plugin, not the just "f6" it comes with the f6 from waves) for it to show the frequencies
It works with some of the presets included, but not all. There's a list of all the plugins needed on the product page in order for the vocal preset to work.
Any pro mix engineer will tell you that EQ'ing, compression, ect any vocals or instruments for that matter in solo is not good. You have to make sure the tonal of the vocals, etc is tonally ballanced with the music as well.
@@KeyWAV Just so you know bro, I didn't comment to seem like I was attacking your skill, cut you down or anything like that. Your tutorial was awesome and gave alot of good advice for the beginner!! Have a great week Key and keep up the great work and beats man!!

As a SOUND ENGINEER in my mother's basement I can assure its best to apply the D-esser during the mastering phase that way your not missing anything
Deeser before compression? Are you high??

More of these!
Sounds great! But when you do a before and after, you should really match the gain so it is fair comparison!
Thanks for the quality content bro

Nice.. i wana learn this for my beats not vocals yet... like how to mix a drum a snare and hat
Is everything mixed in mono or stereo?
Quick question is it better to record or track your vocals raw and then add these plug-ins or track vocals while recording with some plug-ins
Thats always the best way so you can change things if it doesn’t sound the way you want it too
The best way is to record track vocals raw. This way you can have more control over what you want to do with the recording. Also, if you add effects meanwhile recording, this can use up more resources from your computer, which can generate more lag in the audio
NICE ONE
Yoo Key, nice work. Can you do a waves template for mixing different instruments i.e bass, keys, drums etc?
In the process man!
Mono or Stereo StudioRack?
I need this song!
Would I need StudioRack while I can bring the plugins into the mixer channel?
Thank you!! :)
I just got the waves f6 and when I play my track in my daw the wa w forms don't come up in the eq. Do u know why?
Yo anyone know how to get the eq to be on the bottom half of the f6 so i can see what is hitting where?
yo Key, since compressor brings lows & highs in level aka rides it more or less evenly - isn't that the same for the vocal rider? whats the actual difference
Vocal rider isn't the same as a regular compressor
Vocal rider is basically automation

did you add autotune after recording or during?

how much to mix vocals on a ready beat?
Hey man, I have all the details on my website at www.beatsbykey.com/mixing-and-mastering - let me know if you have any other questions though!
dope tutorial but that one off key note is really unsettling, other than that dope stuff
How are you editing your commentary
That much subtractive eq can really ruin your vocal. Only eq out what you hear. Nice vid tho
🔥
