So I had a hatchling that did not get the point, only hissed at her food. She did not eat 3 weeks after hatching and lost 1 gram out of 6 grams and I was so worried she would starve.
I looked all over UA-cam but could only find people discuss assist feeding not actually doing it. tried the tail trick once and now she’s eating regularly and growing perfectly. It was a treat to watch her ‘learn’ what food was.
Thank you so so much for this video.

Hey, Tina! I am SO happy to hear that the video helped! I've been getting a little better at it and am proud to say that Toff is actually growing and eating on her own now. It's not as difficult as some people make it out to be, but I'm sure that education and actually showing people can do more good than just talking about it and warning people. I'm so happy that it helped your little one.

My wife got me a baby tri color hognose from a person in our town thet said they were feeding it pinkys just fine (this is my first ever snake). After checking everything and trying pinkys, frog legs, reptilinks juiced and scented of all kinds i finally bit the bullet and assist fed her this evening after 8 ish weeks of not even an inkling of interest in food. I appreciate your insight and realize i will probably have to keep doing it until she gets the drive. (Micro reptilinks are a great size from what i can tell)

So happy that the video helped! Micro Reptilinks really are the perfect size to help small babies that need some extra assistance to get started.

I wish I had seen this video a year ago!!! I’m finally doing this, I figured it out with trial and error over a year and I finally have my baby eating pretty regularly with this method, i slip a pinkie in behind the tail now so she’s getting a tail and pinkie, she still won’t take just a pinkie though lol

Once she eats a bit easier and gets a bit bigger, I would recommend trying some canned chicken breast! It's what got Toff to start eating on her own. She is a champion eater now.

This video helped me feed my baby garter. After 1 month he was able to feed on his own from tongs.

I'm pretty sure that the only time I will need to assist feed is when I have little baby hognose that need the assistance.
I plan to breed in the future.
So I appreciate you and other people like Jeff Galewood who show us how to do this and explain when it is needed to do this. I'm a little nervous to assist feed but it will be a couple years until I can breed hognose.
I do think at some point I want to use one of my hognose to practice opening their mouths. I won't put food in there.
When I got my female I wanted to check her mouth but gave up trying to open it because I didn't want to stress her out.

I first had to assist feed a baby corn snake that wouldn't eat after an entire month of being born and he was half the size of his other siblings. It was significantly easier. Hoggies I avoid it as much as possible.
Also, Jeff is an amazing resource to reach out to! He helps us out all the time too :)

I have 2 hatchlings from last year that I'm still assist feeding! They struggle the same as when they were newly hatched, and still refuse to eat themselves until I get a pinkie head in their mouth and they will take down the rest. They do show some interest but still not enough. I'm hoping that hormones will hit at some point and they will feel compelled to want to eat on their own! Lol it is very hard to get their mouth open and hold them still and get the food in and I think it's something that just gets better over time with practice.

It took me about 10 tries. I had to edit those out so the video wasn't over 15 minutes long! hahaha

currently helping a friend that has a hognose and it has not eaten since they got it 2 months ago. at 10 grams and just hissing at food, I have bought reptilinks toad sausages and am syringe feeding a few meals every 3-4 days to try and get some nutrition in. I'm hoping to switch to mouse tails after that.

Hopefully it starts eating soon! Depending on the enclosure and temps, it might not feel safe yet to eat on its own. Feel free to reach out on Facebook or Instagram if you want any help :)

I have assist fed and force fed a hognose I got from Cleo's colubrids as it was bought for half the price for being a picky eater. I also think he has a bit of a genetic defect as his eyes are much bigger than the rest of my snakes, but they said he was eating on salmon, tuna, and sardine scenting and I had no luck with it. after force feeding once and assist feeding twice I finally found that toad scenting was exactly what was needed and now he eats f/t unscented mice no problem and catching up to his age.
I honestly don't really have any other way of making it easier to assist feed, you just get a little bit better each time.

Awww, thank you so much! Tyler is honestly such an awesome guy! We have a MorphMarket page (www.morphmarket.com/stores/urbandinos/) where we list most of what we have available, but we also are raising up and hatching more babies :)

Do you ever put vitamins or calcium on the mouse tail?
I mean you might have already and I just didn't see it.🤷🏼‍♀️

Sometimes, if it is a case of them really looking skinny and malnourished. In her case, she looks good, just a bit... helpless when it comes to learning how to eat.

My baby hognose (11 weeks) has not eaten for a month now. I’ve tried so many ways of feeding but he’s just not interested in the food (2day old frozen pinky’s). I’m scared to assist or force feed him because I read a lot died from the stress. What should I do now?

    • @SnakefulGrace

What have you currently tried for feeding? Also, what is your enclosure like at the moment? What are the temperatures on the hot and cold side? What is the humidity ? What kind of bedding? What kind of enclosure and how big?
