  • ‘I Am Cat’ blew up! What’s their secret?
With the success of low graphics and simple VR games such as 'I Am Cat', 'Gorilla Tag' and 'Penguin Paradise', and the "lack" of success of Assassin Creed Nexus and Asgard's Wrath 2, we're left to wonder what's really going on here? Do VR players really not care about AAA titles? If that's the case, then why is Flat2VR so successful? Or is there something deeper going on?

There are a few different factors. One of the things is how they incentivise their reviews. So they have a TV in there where if you leave a review, you get a cosmetic. So they may have a larger review to sale ratio than most. To what you were mentioning, its important to remember that theres a much larger portion of "VR Newbies" than "VR Regulars" like you and I. Rather than having a game that takes a while to master like Contractors showdown or Tabor; just having a simple game that you mess around in, not really any "learning", for the "newbie" to load in for once a week or once every 2 weeks and mess around in can be powerful. I wouldnt really say its too much of a young versus old thing, while it is a factor, its a lot more of a casual gamer factor.
Plus the points you said about the hands and the popularity of cats. 🐱🐱🐱

More and more I'm forced to see that especially with VR games that casual games are as popular or more than full blown campaign games. To be fair I still think we need a larger sample of AAA games to see if they are still as appealing. Flat2VR Studios will help with that

    Great take.
    Character Embodiment > AAA Budget
    Physics based > control sticks

I believe I am Cat might be juicing the stats a little bit since there's an in-game incentive to rate the game. There's a TV next to the sink that gives gold cat claws if you rate it.

It’s simple and chill. Life right now is extremely depressing and stressful. Having something that’s not mentally taxing and an escape makes sense.

I think these games poppin off should really be showing developers that VR gamers don't want 2D games transferred to VR. VR has very special benefits and games should be designed around those. The cat game looks like it hits on two fronts. Its very simple and targets VR controls really well but its also extremely cute and cozy. That's almost an untapped market in VR.
Me personally what I really want from VR now passthrough is becoming a little closer to the mighty vision pro. I want to see more AR but not games. I think there is a vast untapped market of people waiting for AR experiences like having virtual pets scampering around your room going behind furniture. Hook them up to rudimentary A.I and you could train your pet. Give it a name it recognises. Something like that sounds like a one man army could pull it off or a very small studio. Nothing impossible. We're starting to see some AR games that make better use of your room but I want assistants hooked up to chatgpt, claude or gemini and simply looking at my assistant and talking should trigger it to answer. so no wake words needed. There's a wild world of stuff that can happen with characters in your room that are semi intelligent. Teachers, therapists, doctors, friends, problem solvers and of course the saucy stuff which I'm finding way too weird to encourage. Mild flirting with jokes with your A.I, is as far as I ever want to go. But I do want this and no one is building it. I've talked with every major A.I model about this exact scenario and they all swear up and down that people are working on this. If you look at the links they provide there are things similar but nothing exactly like I described. an AR character aware of your room geometry, able to come and sit on your couch or be in a totally different scale. Sat at my desk having a tiny assistant the size of a pen walking around on the desk. Would that not be wild?

Tbh I dislike 'natural movement' in VR (except for sports games or Sprint Vector), but I wanna be a cartoon cat from time to time!

Alot of "triple A" titles just feel like a cash brag attempt. The ones that are made by indie developers are always better even if they end up being considered AAA.
The popularity is weird that it depends on the crowd your aiming for. Casual or the more serious competition type. Word of mouth is pretty crazy for the casual ones.

let's take advantage of AAA while they still exist in VR.
soon we will only have small, uninteresting experiences...
It's not the VR I want.
