- This was a little video I throw together so it was filmed on my iPad with no cameraman so I if there is some unclear things I’d be more then happy to help clear them up. I replaced the ball joints in my rough country upper control arms with Moog k6540. There is no clip you literally just push them out. If was for a 07.5-13 Silverado 1500
Thanks bro, needed to know they were moogs. Thanks
I hope this works for the rough country control arms I have. If it does I am really grateful for this video. I can’t wait until Monday to have my truck done. I need an other alignment on my truck again
@@chevy0771 I had two different sets but the forged UCAs I never changed cause I just upgraded to cognito
@@BrandonGoodine thank man I got the Forged Upper Control Arms and I’m really hoping that ball joint will work on it.
Okay so it doesn’t work on a forged upper control arms so that part sucks gotta get the ball joint right from rough country them selfs.
@@chevy0771
Exactly what they told me when I asked them.
Forged arms can only take the specified ball joints they sell on their website.
Tubular arms tho, you can fit other ball joints in them like MOOG.
I didn’t even know you could do this with the tires on. Haha
Damn
I’m a lazy soul 😂😂 hardcore mode only😎
mane im finna drop video tonight with this installation. i tagged your channel in it bc i used this method.
🤙🏾🤙🏾
You made it look easy!
Okay so figured id help a few people out so what i figured out is that this balljoint doesnt fit the new style forged ones it fits in the spindle but too small to be pressed in the arm. Only option is to order from rough country
You are correct cause those are not forged upper control arms there tubed upper control arms. But if I’m not mistaking you can look on RC’s website and they’ll tell you the part number in the description but they also come with a year warranty anyways. I found the part number for my tubed upper control arms on a Silverado forum. Sorry for any confusion.
Damn you doin this on hardcore mode with the tire still on lmao.
Lmao yea man I was in a hurry
I just wanted to add some info to this, about which ball joint to use. If you have a newer 2014 GM 1500 Silverado or Serria. And you have the silver aluminium lower control arm. The Moog K6540 will be to small. You need to buy the Moog K6696 which is slightly larger. At some point they switched to stamped steel upper and lower control arms which use the smaller Moog K6540. Good video but I removed the tire to make it easier.
I have the 2014 Silverado 1500 so I should purchase the moog 6696 right?
@@MartinGarcia-tz4ze Yes but the easy way to check is if you have the silver lower control arm that are cast aluminium. Not the stamped steel ones.
A question I have 3.5 lift RC I need replace the ball joints... what part I need? Do you know ?
@@brandonalvarado7722 depends on the year make and model
@@blairbarham6532 2014 Silverado 1500 whit RC control arms
If your ball joint is not a lock pin ball joint, than you will have to order your ball joint through Rough Country. I called there customer service line and they were under 1 year warranty. I purchase the moog product first and it did not fit correctly. It all depends on the type of ball joint you have on your rough country control arms. Hope this information helps.
isai campos hey bro I have purchased 4/5 different ball joints that will not fit my Rough country control arms like yours .. how did you get the correct ones? Did you go Through rough county’s website or call ? Thankyou -Drew
Do you know if the Moog K6540 can be put in the new forged rough country control arm part# 19401A ? My 2012 silverado has stock cast steel control arms with nylon lock nut and I want to replace with the new rough country arms but want to use all moog? Thanks!
Forge arms, for 2019 take Moog K6696, Just spoke to RC ...
Thanks bro!!!
“Cast steel K6540. Cast alum/ Stamped steel K6696 Moog part#'s. If it is a castle nut, you can get them at the local parts store. If it has a nylon lock nut you need to order it from Rough Country”. This is the message they sent me, I tried both ball joints and they would not seat correctly.
Jelani, Not sure why it wouldn't let me reply to the message you sent me. But yes my K6696 fit perfectly but my original ball joint that came with the truck had a castle nut.

FYI I tried the K6540 you are correct they do not fit the RC upper control arm. I then went and tried the Moog K6696 and you are correct they do fit the control arm but they do however do not fit the steering knuckle. Now I don’t know what to do.
@@weebix4206 did you ever get that figured out I’m having the same issue currently
@@Chevy-ny8us you ever get that figured out? I have the new forged rough country control arms too and need to replace the ball joints
Fucking life saver homie 💯
Dude take the tire off that’s the hard way
How long do these ball joints last before needing to be replaced?
@@danieldeanda5816 depends on the wheel and tire set up. I had 24x14s and 35s so I was replacing every year and half cause they rough on the suspension but now I’m on stocks and I’m going on 3 years no problems.
Quick question so on aftermarket uca you can change the upper ball joint or do you have to change the whole control arm
Well yes and no depends on the brand but it will tell you if you can or can’t replace ball joint.
Does the old RC balljoint has a snap ring
Sorry for the super late reply but no just pushed out
Ya bud I have a ready lift sst kit in my Silverado and they do have a snap ring. Moog K6540 is the part number that recommended by ready lift and is what I installed. But the boot is not installed and super brutal to put on and have to put on after new ball joint is pressed in. Such garbage.
The alignment hole looks like its on the wrong side, where did u end up putting the C clip on the k6540s?
I have the same upper controls arms and I want to get better ball joints how do I know if they’ll fit ?
Sorry for the super late response but that part number is all you should need
FYI the k6540 DOES NOT fit the Forged upper control arms I bought in 2019. Part 19401. It's way too small and now my truck is immobile.
I hear ya I just did the same the K6540 definitely does not fit it’s way too small
FYI just talked to customer service guy at rough country they told me have to order directly through them
@@weebix4206
Thank you I was just getting ready to call them.
@@randycook4283 how much are they charging for replacements? $50 or some craziness... also whats the part number lol maybe moog has it in their line up, or even acdelco
This the same ball joints for the RC Forged upper control arms ?
I’m not sure
Bro, why are you working on that truck in good boots? Come on man... keep those boots for sunday morning or friday night.
those are work boots they have rubber bottoms lol trust me my hard bottoms don’t see that kind of Abuse
I have a 1999 Sierra. 6in rough country lift stock control arms. I need to replace upper ball joints and Oreilley has moog k6540 as what I need. But I have seen 2 reviews of it snapping and now everyone on here is saying that. What is going should it be fine on stock control arms? I have put the moog k6541 lower ball joints and it’s been great for the past 2 years
Mine have been fine so far I haven’t had any problems seen this video. I still have the truck and it’s rolling good
Is this the harbor freight puller?
No rented the advance auto puller
Im having the same issue, did you have a 6 in lift kit on yours, I have 35s on and If thats the part number I need I'll literally just do that rather than try to find a whole uca because my ball joint is busted and im stressin heavy
As long as it’s the rough country uca you can just replace the ball joint
The ones I got I don't think are RC, so I'm just gunna go get some cognitos and just do both sides
@@BrandonGoodine question the RC upper control arm came with Moog ball joint ?
@@watchmanexpert I’m not sure man. I just know they are from a f250
@@watchmanexpert they come with moog ball joints, I replaced mine twice so far
All you removed was the ball joint nut?
Yes then pushed it out with the balljoint tool
Bro, I have a 3.5” suspension lift on my 09 and had a local shop change mine a year ago. He made me go drop $300 on stock upper control arms from a part store and said they’d be fine with the lift. He Kept my RC UCAs. Been having to replace wheel hub assemblies, CVs, and all kinds of front end issues lately. Had 4 of 6 studs snap smooth off my front driver side zooming on the interstate just recently, and luckily had to pull off and take a leak and noticed it. Reckon the stock control arms are what’s been causing all this chaos?
3.5" is too much for stock UCAs. 2" and under is fine.
Yea brother that’s definitely the problem. Your angles are probably terrible. He got you on that one.
