  • I take the 690 out to test its suitability as a touring bike. Iv'e made a few changes and want to see if that makes the bike a bit more comfortable on the long haul.

    The only 2 things I would do extra to your bike is make provisions that you can run an extender on the screen for the long bitumen and dirt road sections , and as I have done with my race 350exc added a seat concepts comfy seat makes a world of difference, we have day night events here in South aust that can go for 24 hours.

    Mate, I'd genuinely recommend having a read up on "The observation line" whilst riding on roads. Hugging the centre white line on right handers can be deadly.

    How you loving the 690 set up now that you've had it a while ? Any major issues with your bike? Im about to pull the trigger on a 2022 and run a similar set up for some long distance backroad touring in Canada/USA/Mexico but have some reservation about KTM reliability long term when out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the video cheers

      Just had a quick cruise through some of your other more recent videos and it looks like you have sold the 690 Enduro R. I could tell it was a bit older model due to the dash with the tachometer. You mention you were looking for a newer model that has the 2nd balancer. Is that still your plan? I see now you're on a larger tourer. Thats my dilemma at the moment. Go into the midsize "adventurer tourer" market T7, 890ADVR or others in that range but it starts to diminish my confidence in some of the desert and steep rocky Riding I love to do that the 690 would be more comfortable doing. My biggest concern really is the long term reliability with the KTM riding 30,000km in 16 months from Canada to Central America that to be honest wouldn't be as much of a concern on a Japanese model... Maybe my concern is misplaced but this would be my 1st KTM.

      Hi Billy I have actually sold the 2018 model and are trying to pick up a 2020 or 2021model but not having much luck they are very popular. I have two friends who have had the 690/701 bikes now for quite a while with zero problems and I had no problems with mine. Pretty old engine now so the bugs have been sorted. The only real issue they had at one stage was the fuel pumps and I think that was sorted. If you were going really, really remote U might carry a spare.
      They are the best option in the market for a true adventure bike in my opinion by a fair margin. Soon as U get much above that 150 kg mark they are really only touring bikes and become a bit of a handful off-road.

      @@dirtbikeadv Steve thanks a lot for your input. I have found a 2022 still in a crate at a friends dealership here in Canada for a really great price. 14k CDN out the door! There is also a 2023 701 just up the road from me here as well for $16,088 CDN out the door as the prices for 2023 have taking a jump. Clearly the 2022 is the better deal as the bike hasn't changed any this year. I have had a couple conversations in the last couple hours and the fuel pump was mentioned in both those conversations. A bloke in the USA had replace his pump now 3x in the first year of ownership 2021 and the other didn't have any issues. All the forums that i'm seeing with concerns and complaints are mostly 2015/2016/2017 references and as you mentioned I would assume most of those issues have been sorted in a bike that is now a bit more refined. One last question for you if I can. How did you find 1st gear ? tall ? just right? i'm in a lot of steep terrain here on the West Coast of Canada (British Columbia) and was listening to a lot of bikes seemingly not liking a slow 1st gear approach in more challenging conditions. But maybe thats just the nature of such a large single cylinder at slow speed. Thanks again for your knowledge on this bike. I think im going to pull the trigger as I agree with you as soon as an adventure bike passes 150kg mark it becomes more and more like a tourer and less and less about finding more challenging tracks to explore. cheers Happy new year

      @@_billythekid Hi Again yeah I didn't have a problem with the gear ratios at all. But to set up any bike to do 100 to 120kms comfortably there is usually a compromise at the other end. Personally I had no issues but my mate on his 701 fitted an after market gearbox to change the middle ratios but not sure why U need it. Yeah I am going for a newer bike with the second counter balancer as well just to make them a bit smoother on the long hauls. Same as U looking for that bargain of super low hours second hand.
      Bit jealous that is a bargain
      Good luck

      @@dirtbikeadv thanks Steve for your input. Ya just heard 1st was really tall. But I guess nothing the throttle can’t help correct in a rough spot. Just didn’t want to have to be really twisting it hard to get up places where I would normally be feathering it at low rpm.
      And ya great deal. But I guess knowing the guy who runs the dealership helps with a bit of a break.
      Thanks again and happy new year. Hope you don’t that bike soon. I’ll check back to see how the build goes.

    • @dirtbikeadv
      @dirtbikeadv  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Alan yeah SC seats are on back order last time I checked but will get one at some stage. Vibration is noticeable at speed but not a deal breaker. It comes through the bike as much as the handle bars so anti vibe dampers on the bars would only fix half the problem. The 2020 models might be the go
