This includes a quickshifter teamed with the 6-speed gearbox, lean-angle sensors for enhanced cornering traction, and two ride modes that you can change on the fly depending on riding conditions. Take a closer look at all these features and more as Eric gives us a run down on these new updates, some important specs, and then takes this bike out on the pavement and some trails to see what all these changes mean during real-world riding.

      my wife and i are laughing at your review, as she said the very same thing. I have an africa twin and i convinced her, that was the bike for me long term, but these KTM's are just so much fun and surely have to be the perfect all rounder. Did you get one. Pick mine up Saturday.

      Westcountry Homes Online I am riding my Africa Twin DCT on pavement with my wife, short or long trip. But I recently rode my AT on mountain single tracks: very capable thanks to high torque at low revs and well balanced chassis and suspension. The limit is the weight, after 2 or 3 fall you tend to smooth your riding. Then I tested an Husky 701 on the same single track: it was so easy, so capable, I felt like riding my WRF250 ! But I cannot afford a 3rd bike in my garage 😭

    Best technical review of this bike to date especially suspension comparison to old model. Re the air filter comment, whatever you do, do NOT fit the KTM foam filter from hard parts, it lets even more dirt in than the paper one does, I had a big problem doing the TAT on one of these with the foam unit. The reason is that the base of it is constructed out of very hard material which does NOT squish down and make a seal which is a very fast way to wreck your engine.Just fit the Rottweiler system or even consider adding the Rade Garage 6.2 litre hidden front tank and their foam filter system. The new 690 is the best adventure bike KTM make in my opinion. Not that it is perfect, it is still too heavy for a real all rounder but it is a lot lighter than anything else and if your travel alone off road that matters.

  • @Britishshooter
    @Britishshooter 5 років тому +5

    I have just come back to this video for the second time and without doubt it is the best and most comprehensive review of this great bike. I've said it before but fuel range is easily fixed by the Rade Garage hidden tank i the front which will easily do 230-280 miles and the same tank coupling will then take the Rallye Raid side tank for up to 350 miles. The 2019 KTM690 is now the pros choice for serious adventure, everything else out there including the 790/YamT7/Africa Twin etc are just the posers choice in my book.

    Thanks for the review: I have this bike and I tested it on a Morocco tour, and all your impressions are the same as mine. I had a problem with the TC button, I could not turn it off in the sand and it was a big problem for me in the desert sand. The doongle that I put was not compatible with this bike and I had to remove it. Some extras I fitted: LED head light, WINGS titanium exhaust system, aluminum anti-slip plate, Tubliss rim system, windshield, closed hand guards, bigger pegs , strong rear brake pedal, wing mirrors flexible, oiled foam air filter, luggage rack and a few more details ..

    THANK YOU so much for the review...I've been waiting to see Rocky Mtn's words & video for this particular bike & you didn't disappoint! Great cinematography!!! I'd actually already made up my mind to bite the bullet at get the '19 instead of getting a leftover '18. Seeing & hearing your comments makes me at least not hyperventilate about difference in cash between the two years as much.
    2 things for you:
    1) When you do your build, please do 2-builds. Do you full adventure-bike build with all the travel kit, as you did with the '18. I know that's your bag & you do it well. But do a build version that's more in keeping with being a fast scout-bike. Keeping weight down & performance up. Would love to see your guys take on that.

    Good review and footage. Gents, this is the closest to unicorn bike you are going to get. Long service intervals, capability to add racks for RTW or serious trips, no over whelming functions electronics (on the fence about shift feature, one more thing to go wrong...but its nice when coming in and going out of technical), lighter than KLR, but heavier than EXC line.... This is the type of bike where you can take an unknown route and have a much better chance of following through or worse case light enough to pick the bike up and back track if it gets too nasty. Nobody finishes a decent technical trail and wishes they had a heavier bike. You ass might not be thanking you on the slab runs, but atleast you won't find yourself bring heavy bike drama to a ride in most cases. Just add few more gal/liters to that fuel capacity, heated grips (thank me later), windscreen for long hauls and some luggage carry.

    Nice bike, but could still be so much better if it was cross bred with a 500 EXC. My beefs with my 17 690 seem to still apply. Love the motor and handling, but it needs: Wider ratio gearbox, better seat, bigger gas tank, real skid plate, bigger pegs, easier air filter access, better fuel cap, lower weight. And windscreen, center stand, and rack connections for ADV riding. Some of those things can be fixed, some can't. Nice review, I bet Rocky Mountain will do well accessorizing these but we really shouldn't have to do all that work on a 12k+ bike.

Maybe that would change if I adjusted the suspension on the 500. 690 is noticeably heavier but I did not drive it. I would cut that monster exhaust off the 690. Styling is okay. Why haven't they updated the 690. It's an awesome bike but a bit outdated. I'm probably going for a 500. Goodluck.

    Change the oil at 3,000 miles, not 6+k. I’ve owned two 690, and have done various lab reports. The recommended Motorex is absolutely toast at 3k. Wonderful review though!

    • @sarahdell4042
      @sarahdell4042 5 років тому +4

      mld I have zero experience with the 1090. But, the 690 will start getting really fussy in regards to shifting around the 2,500-3k mark. Basically screaming at you to change the oil! Very reliable motors if you keep an eye on the rockers, and keep the oil intervals lower than factory recommended. I didn’t have good luck with the 390 though.......

      My question is why Motorex in the 690's and Belray EXS in the Huskys but doesn't really matter I guess just contract dollars as they (KTM/Husky) don't product there own lubricant lines. Yeah unless you can't change the oil at 3500, no lab reports needed but still pretty oil school oil mentality.

    • @sarahdell4042
      @sarahdell4042 5 років тому +1

      Aspired329 It’s simply just marketing. Both oil companies pay to be the “factory pour” I will probably just switch to 20w-50 vtwin mobil 1 in the warm months. I’ve had various oil samples taken from my 690s. 3,000 seems to be the point where motorex is trashed. Within a few hundred miles it’s down to a 40 weight, which is pretty wild.

I must admit that the 690 has been the bike that I have enjoyed the most everywhere: easy to handle, easy to maintain and very fun to ride (without abs and traction control). That being said, I'm sorry to see the exact same mirrors that I had to replace many times because the stem gets cut off and the same tail hanging down and coming apart. Good for the improvements, but there were two missed ones.

    I just watched a review of a CRF450 trip from London to Morroco and back which reminds us that litre+ adventure bikes are a waste of money. This new 690 strikes me as the ultimate continental tourer on every surface. Very expensive but the power and tech is superlative and your arms will thank you after each day's 200+ miles in the saddle a) because of the smooth absorbent suspension and b) you can pick it up easily when you fall over. With seat mods, definitely my choice for an all round daily workhorse and mega tourer. Needs very heavy duty security because it's a powerful magnet for thieves.

    Earlier LC4 engines ('08-12ish) had lots of problems with the exhaust rocker roller failing and causing top-end damage. So early models were not as reliable.

    Great review. I love this bike and I love my 701. The added electronic stuff is whatever, nature of the beast with new bikes I suppose. But I just hate hate hate that dust getting past the air filter is a well known problem and it's glossed over like 'it's just part of the bike.' Some experience it, some don't but I spent 1000 miles doing every thing I saw mentioned to try and fix the stock airbox before finally dropping the money on an aftermarket intake and it's the first thing I tell people to check/fix. Cross my fingers the 6200 mile service isn't a complete teardown.

  • @accorsistudios
    @accorsistudios 5 років тому +3

    I think the issue (own one) is the tank in the rear. I tried a Rade add on tank and removed the air box, but there was too much going on under there and I'd rather carry gas if I have to.

    I would like to see a review of the Husqvarna 701 and KTM 690 while riding the 5 Miles of Hell trail. This would give a great perspective of big-bore bikes on a challenging trail. All current videos are of the 300TPI or less.

      Have ridden 5MOH, it was challenging on my 300 XC. No way I am taking my 701 on it any more than I would ride my 300 on the Interstate. The 690/701 are amazing bikes, but unless one happens to be Toni Bou or Graham Jarvis on a borrowed corporate owned bike, stay off 5MOH on your 690😆

    Wow, what a beautifully filmed production, first class stuff. Nice comprehensive and thorough review and explanation of the TC and ABS, the best I have seen online too. Jeez that is some speed on that dirt road at casual RPM 😆
    I used to ride a suspension and engine modded DR-Z 400 off road, so the weight of the 690 will be familiar and just fine. The power, on the other hand, will be about double. I do want a 690 to park between my 300 XC and my Super Tenere. I figure that will be a great stable.

    Fun review but I'm really doubting you've ridden it much.
    They are not NOT bullet proof and they continue to be unreliable.
    Don't put confidence in the "6,200 mile service intervals" - that's like believing a bike dies 200mph because the speedometer goes that high! 🤣
    I apologize for raining on your parade but I do have a legit reason for doing so: The 690 is an amazing bike with the exception of reliability. It'd be so awesome for example to get on one in California and rock down to Costa Rica instead of using a heavy Tenere without having to have a mechanical engineering degree.
    Reliability IS a serious issue and it's my opinion that if guys like yourselves stopped covering it (probably from ignorance not blatant deception - I doubt official "testers" put 20K a year on a single bike) I believe KTM would do something about it!
    I do totally agree with you all on the clutch! 😊 I'm in Afghanistan ridding a beater, rented DR400E which I'm grateful for. But when I flew home for 2 weeks last month and got on my 690 I was in too much ecstacy and so focused on just the buttery smooth clutch and almost started to write poetry!

    Great review. I have one and I'm loving it. I'm only missing a windscreen for the highway connections. In the trails, this bike is amazing, you only feel its weight when you start "motocrossing" 😊. A question: If I put the dongle on, can I easily go back to the normal ABS settings (as if there was no dongle)?

    Impressive suspension, handling the woops well. How much do you weigh in riding gear may I ask? For extra fuel capacity use the Rade garage hidden tank. The Aussies have found they work just connecting straight to the breather on the main tank without having to strip the tank out. Also the top tank first that way which is a good thing. You get at least 400 kms (250 miles) with it they are finding.

Yes I do have the R while I think that for 95% of the people the S version would be sufficient. The 790 is really confidence inspiring... it makes you feel like a way better rider than you actually are because it feels so controllable (street & offroad).
