Easily Upgrade Ford Sync 2 using a USB Stick

- If you have an Ford Vehicle older than 2015 or 2016 it likely has Ford Sync 2. Ford Sync version 2 is an excellent product that you can easily upgrade the maps and infotainment system yourself.
You simply need to create a free account on Ford.com or Ford.ca, add your VIN number, download the patch file, unzip the file onto a USB stick formatted with FAT32, then put that USB stick into a USB port on your Ford and turn the key.

I rarely post comments but you sir are an absolute legend. Updated my Sync 2 in 25 minutes. Not only it fixed the issue of pairing Bluetooth automatically to my phone but also seems to have fixed the minor static noise with the radio unit (hopefully, need time to verify if that actually fixed it).
Now I'll try to add navigation and cross my fingers. Already got the ELM327 connector & the Ford A10 Maps SD card.

Ok I have a 2015 f150 xlt the blue tooth doesn't work I bought it from dealer they say 900 to fix but everything else works thanks some said it needs to be upgraded

@@bijujayanand There is no Ford navigation in the middle east as far as I know… not for Sync 2 at least.
Mine has had all the problems of not connecting to blue tooth, everything resetting as soon as I turn off the car and all that. I have tried this 1 zillion times so hopefully I can finally get this to work.
Thank You So Much for this Video! I purchased my 16 Fusion SE 2 years ago and was in constant battle with the dealership while under warranty that I could not use my GPS. Unfortunately it was not a Ford dealership that I purchased the vehicle from, and the dealership I did purchase from kept directing to Ford to repair. Two years without using this feature on my car, and I took a chance purchased the SD Card from Amazon the price Ford has is ridiculous, and searched how to update my SYNC SYSTEM I finally landed on your Video, and you made this such a breeze! Absolutely perfect! The Ford site doesn’t explain that the zip has to be extracted to the root, and not to the desktop. It won’t transfer and gives an error each time. Took 15-20 mins to fully install and no issues. Great vid 👏🏽🙏🏽

@@dailymoments6882 downloading it to my computer, then extracting it to the root folder, and then trying to drag the extracted files to the formatted thumb drive wouldn’t work. Would always get an error when trying to copy. So download and saved to my thumb drive, and then extracted it in the thumb drive, and then deleted the zipped folder. Ran on auto install the min I put it in my truck.
Super easy video to follow! The longest file to upload was file 4 for my 2014 Ford Flex. Took about 10minutes for that one alone. Be patient and Trust the process, it works!
I used to have a 2015 Ford Escape SE with that small screen. It was okay when I had the vehicle till it broke down a little bit over 2 months. I got a 2020 Ford Escape SE. It has Sync 3 in it. I even loved the Apple Car Play. It was so easy to do w/o using the manual for the vehicle. It was a big upgrade for me.
So this will work with the small screen?
I got an upgrade kit from Amazon. The SDCard upgrade went from 10 to 14. I plugged it in & it worked. I didn't use the USB STICK,but it works. Would using that enhance the system at all?
Oh my gosh, you are a hero to me. After multiple failed attempts following the Ford site instructions I found your video and successfully upgraded on the FIRST TRY from a Sync v2 to Sync v3 on my 2017 Ford Explorer. Now, on to upgrading my mapping software, which is what started this whole debacle.

You can't upgrade from sync 2 to sync 3 with a USB stick... It's a costly hardware change!
lol you can't upgrade a sync2 to sync 3 with software , it's a full head unit
great stuff....my update finally worked after seeing for the first time here...that I had to disconnect my phone bluetooth....then also how the zip file was dragged to the pen-drive before extraction really helped. Great stuff..thanks

I’ve attempted to update my sync 2 software, I’ve followed fords PDF instructions which differ from yours. I’ve also followed your instructions. I’ve tried Mac and windows it’s formatted to FAT32 I’ve also tried EXFAT… doesn’t matter what I do I keep getting the USB not supported message on my 2013 f150 I just purchased 2 weeks ago. Any help before I take it Ford?
Try a different usb stick i switched to another one it worked after not accepting the one i used first
I need help ... my Explorer xlt (2016) ...I can't seem to have navigation on it. I have the compass, but there's no "N" fir navigator like yours has on screen. I look into settings cog and don't see anything about maps. Is this something that can be fixed to do the who navigation so I can get directions on the screen like GPS sorta deal? My 2009 f150 had it so I'm just fogur8ng this explorer put & can't seem to. Ant advice?
the option to install is only giving me dealership. Doesnt shoe usb download option.
Hi Mr. I have a question about my Sync in my Ford Edge is not turning on. Only when I disconnect the power and put it back the radio works for like 30 secs but it turns off back again. But the screen still off. I just try the update but still not working. Any ideas will must appreciated? Thanks

Does this update give you Apple CarPlay ? If not what exactly does it do for a iPhone ?
I'm trying to update my 2014 C-Max that has Sync 1 but the only option on the Ford website is to book a service and have it done, there is no option to download a file :/
I did the update, but I have no sound still, the radio stations still don't pop up and the screen for just the radio is flashing. Idk what to do anymore. I've been with out my radio for 3 yrs!

Thanks for sharing this detailed instruction video. One question, I thought Ford announced that all 2016 vehicles will be receiving a Sync 3 software update but I couldnt find the package anywhere.

The firmware should be on the site we show. If you don't see it under SYNC 2, click the SYNC3 option and see if it is there. Otherwise I would just call the Ford help line.

I deleted the file before uploading at the end on the Ford webpage. The car does not see the Map card, and my Sirius xm is not working.
I tried several master restes, but no results. Any idea how to update or go about this?

Alas, my dashboard shows an error when trying to get the update. (it does show an update available), but I get "WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE ERROR. WE ARE WORKING TO CORRECT IT AND REQUEST YOU TRY AGAIN LATER." -- Several years I got notified by Ford (via snail mail) that my vehicle's sync could no longer be updated. And I've seen and taken pictures of the screen two times that they have pushed an update since then. I don't see a way to check the exact version of the software I'm running.

Our car does not see any files on the USB? Formatted correctly, downloaded correctly (we think), but no files seen by car. It does know that USB1 was accessed
for me it says on the site that sync 3 have another hardware and software and can't be upgraded from sync 2, wtf.

You didn’t update to Sync generation 3 or Sync 3. All you did was update it to the latest build of sync 2. I don’t think it is possible to upgrade from Sync 2 to Sync 3 without completely screwing up your vehicle
You can buy sync 3 for this vehicle.
Bro sync 3 upgrades require you to actually remove the radio and swap the components. That's completely different from a update to the latest version of sync 3.10
If you want to get back the software old version, can you do-it?

It appears I have Sync1. I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus SEL and according to the Ford website I have Sync1 version 3.1.4.c and upgrade available listed as 4.6 I just checked and it does indeed say Sync! last update 7/19/12. So using this upgrade will work with Sync1?

has anyone else had when updating sync 2 the navigation disappears and it says information instead? my husband did an update before watching your video and that happened. so we are going to try updating again following your video and see if that brings navigation back. we are so frustrated with fords updates. hope your video helps and if anyone has this same problem please help us. thanks

Yes we found a patch for the navigation on a forum and that fixed it immediately. Even twice at the Ford dealer couldn’t fix it.

Likely not, but if you are not comfortable doing it yourself, it's a very basic process for someone who is comfortable with computer software.

So...I completed the task and my camera, phone and other aspects started working again. Lasted only 4 days then camera stopped and while using the phone, the person on the other end could not hear me. Now I'm really stuck.

I don't understand what you mean by upgrade the maps. After update your car has map database A5, which is the 2015 version
A5 is not specific to 2015... A5 is relatively old now. I believe that are up to A12 now.
Too bad in my case there is a glitch with the website and it says it was last updated in 2011 and has no new file.

First, thanks. Your tutorial was about as good as I've ever seen. How does this update interact with the "Map Version" SD Card. I know you said that this update for SYNC 2 updates the maps, but do I also need to get the latest SC Card in order for the GPS to work its best? Also, is there a certain time of the year that Ford typically releases their newest SC Card? Thanks.
U will still need a map card
Hi William. The SD card will still be required. The download that you put onto your USB stick includes updated maps and so there is nothing else for you to do after the upgrade it applied.
