Love that you used the glow on the skin key. I've never thought to do that and yet it makes so much sense to! Awesome vid, thanks for teaching me something new
You can do the same with the qualifier so you can customize it a little more but I like having the matte node on the graph for grabbing a quick mask without going into the qualifier. Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching 👍🏼
Maaaaan! This has been such an informative and interesting video!! I'm just starting out with colour grading and am watching heaps online, and this is one of the better videos I've seen! Thanks so much. SUBSCRIBED!!
Thanks for watching! It's personal preference really. I always get a good result using Cineon so I go with that. You can use either to get a good result. 👍🏼
I get confused by the Look where you add a split tone to the shadows and highlights, but then take it away by doing the opposite in the log wheels. Isn't that like making an image brighter using one method then making it darker using another method? Just a waste of time? I know log wheels affect highlights and shadows SLIGHTLY differently than primaries, but won't they just cancel each other out?
The difference between primary wheels and log wheels is significant enough, not just slight. Primary wheels apply color or exposure changes more broadly, with the gain wheel affecting the shadows only slightly and the lift and gamma wheels affecting other parts of the image as well. On the other hand, log wheels have a narrower and more restricted effect. If you want to see exactly how they affect your footage, you can import a black and white linear gradient into DaVinci Resolve and experiment with the primaries and log wheels while looking at the waveform and/or parade scopes. This is a useful way to get a visual representation of what's happening. 👍🏼
In the case of this grade. I used the primaries to apply a macro color adjustment then used the log wheels to "remove" some of that color in the brightest and darkest part. This is a very common way to use the primaries and log wheels together to balance a look.
amazing look bro... punchy yet moody... i am kinda surprised at the amount of rolling shutter from an Arri Alexa, that train looks skewed and its distracting
@@george.colorist when you going to do final rendering is there wash out color after render it out? I had problem with davinci color recently, I dont know how to manage them
Hi George, excellent, I wanted to ask you if we can achieve something similar with your powergrade and making adjustments to get to those tones or looks precisely in the Look NODE of your powergrade and apply those adjustments that you made in the primary wheels and log wheels of the Look Node of this tutorial? Spectacular that you have subtitles in several languages,, great that you teach us how to get different looks from your powergrade,,,, Thank you!!! 👍
Yes! You can try adding the split toning from that you see in this video to the "look" node in the PowerGrade to see what kind of a result you get. Remember that split tones that work well for one shot wont necessarily look good on other shots. Saludos! 🙏🏼
They could be done in one node. Sometimes I do them in parallel nodes to have more control and be able to reference the image with and without the adjustment.
As I was watching I was thinking, Im surprised there isnt some kind of software fix for rolling shutter. Sort of like warp stabilizer or something. It probably wouldnt be perfect, but I feel like it wouldnt be too hard to get something that at least reduced the effect. Maybe not. Maybe its nearly impossible.
You are obviously very talentet and know how to make a pretty image. On the other hand though, im starting to get sick of the overly used word "cinematic"... its nothing cinematic about this grade, this is a highly stylized image, not "cinematic".. you would never se a feature film graded like this. Good work though, just wrongfully labeled.

Very good explained!
And of course also great grading work. Love it!
Thanks for watching Samuel! 👍🏼
Thanks George, that was so helpful! I would love to see how you built your HSV compound node. :)

excellent post mate! Question: why did you use as CST the Cineon option instead of using the conversion to Arri...? thank you!

I mean, now I want to know a detailed breakdown of how that shot was done vis-vis camera movement.
The cinematographer is tagged in the description. Feel free to reach out to him and ask 👍🏼
Dude 😮💨
What kind of computer are you using to make your movies with?
Im on a MacBook Pro.
Amazing! Why didn't you work in the DWG Color space (with a CST in the beginning, then from DWG to Cineon in the end (before the film LUT)?
No reason really. I kept it a little "simpler" going with a Rec.709 to Cineon conversion.
Круть! 😎👍
Спасибо 🙏🏼
I bought it but it doesn't work for me 😢

Thanks man 👊🏼 I keep seeing comments on that. NYC subways average 30 mph so fair enough that there is some rolling shutter. 🤷🏻♂️
