    Great review. These compact, discreet, but still stylish cameras like the Fuji X100, the Leica CL and now the Nikon Z fc (and maybe the Leica Q or M10 with a small lens) I think have a wonderful place in the camera world. They offer higher image quality, more control, and a better outlet for artistic expression than even the latest iPhone cameras, yet are scaled back enough to where you can carry and use them in casual situations - essentially almost anywhere.
    Sure a Canon 1DX/R3 or Sony α1 far outperform it for serious professional usage, but half the people drooling over those cameras online don't even need that performance most of the time, let alone in their every day life. I'm glad camera companies are offering high quality options for people who want something very usable but not too "serious" - I like to go out with a camera without looking like a cliche of a reportage or sports photographer from the 1980s!

    Great review. I purchased a Nikon Z FC because it reminds of my manual FE2 and FM2 I had. I purchased the 50-250 lens to bring with me hiking in Alaska. I ended up trading it in for the 24-200 which is a better quality lens than the 50-250. Have enjoyed shooting with it around Alaska. The exposure compensation works great in helping get the correct exposure. Overall great camera and perfect size for hiking and carrying around. The battery life, as you mentioned, is phenomenal.

    Just got this camera today with the 16-50mm kit lens. It’s a fantastic little beast of a camera! I really don’t understand what some online reviews are saying that this is lightweight, plasticky body. It’s heavier than my old Panasonic LUMIX G7 and that was a plasticky feeling camera. This Z fc has some deceptive weight. And it looks and feels amazing IMHO. Yeah I wish it was full frame and that the video record limit was more than 30 minutes. But I’m not willing to shell out Sony prices for an A7S body.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 роки тому +1

      I just purchased the new Zf and returned it realizing the money I had spent and the images it produced. I appreciate the older gear as Ive been buying some older Nikons at great deals with some patience. Older cameras have a look that I miss from using older gear from the past. My antique Nikon D700 still produces some excellent images to this day. And when I want small, my D90 in which I paid $150 for is my perfect travel companion. Heck, I just started shooting images using old film cameras again I bought, or still have. I really miss the old FM cameras. I just found an F6 on Offer Up that sat for 3mos, and I talked the guy down in price. Get what YOU want, but make sure you're happy with the images, and enjoying the time when using the gear.

    Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?

      Never heard of this, but always worried about this problem since the 1990s when customer firmware updates became a thing. I bet you’d have better luck with Canon; I can’t see them charging you for their error just outside of warranty. This is just another reason I went Canon back in 2013. Sorry about that and thanks for the update.

    Hats off to Nikon for producing a digital camera that from a few steps away so closely resembles my beloved film FM both in physical resemblance and the placement of the controls. I purchased a Fujifilm X100F camera a few years ago as an easy to carry 'travel camera' for those times I didn't want to carry a bulkier SLR with lenses and am very happy with it, but had I known that Nikon was going to issue a virtual digital clone to my FM I would have waited to purchase a digital camera and bought the Zfc instead. @HR-wd6cw 2 роки тому +2

    I think the 30 min 4k video limit has to do with the EU, and not necessarily the capabilities of the camera itself (ie. the processor and sensor). I remember reading some article that to get around some tax, cameras sold in the EU had a limit of 29:59 max before they would be "taxed" or considered video cameras (Which may have lead to additional tax or classification) and since it would be easy for someone to simply import a grey market to get around it, most cameras have this limit. I don't know if this applies to 8k video though (as the Z9) supposedly can record over 30 minutes of 8k video in one go, but many cameras (at least up until recently) had a 30 min limit on 4k.
    For the ISO, I don't think many people would want to shoot below the native ISO (and many people advise against this anyway). It will be interesting to see if NIkon continues to update the AF on the ZFc. I know in the most recent update (a few weeks back) they did improve the aF for video, but sadly, the Z50 did not receive this update, so the Zfc might have a slightly longer life span in terms of features and updates (via firmware) than the Z50 (then again, the Zfc is about a year newer, despite sharing a lot of the same technology as the Z50, like the sensor and processor).
    If the Zfc is anything like my Z6 II, I would expect that eye AF is decent, but tracking of unpredictable subjects (which has always been a challenge for the Z cameras) will still suffer. I think only the Z9 is really suited for true wildlife photography with it's revised and revamped AF system coupled with the Expeed 7 processor.
    My only potential grip with the Zfc (after playing with one) is it feels a bit cheap compared to the Fuji XT30, which feels like it has more metal and is more sturdily built, and is cheaper. But supposedly both the ZFc and XT30 have magnesium bodies but the Zfc just has a plastic feel to it, and for the money, this is something I would be on the fence about. I mean the Z50 feels more like the XT30 and costs less, but it doesn't have the film-like look and feel to it. I would have liked to see NIkon make this a little more, but make the body feel more like a metal body and maybe give it a UHS-II card slot. Even if it meant charging another $200, I think it would have still sold for $1100 versus the $960 it is, with the heavier body and faster card slot.
    If you're buying any Z DX camera you should not consider using your existing F-mount glass in general. For the FF cameras, especially the Z6 II and Z7 II with the grip, maybe, because the camera is larger so it balances better, but I wouldn't consider using F-mount DX glass with the Zfc especially (because of the lack of the grip so handling might be harder with longer/larger lenses) or the Z50 (the Z50 might be a bit easier because of the grip).

Goes to show that despite the super-high settings available on newer cameras in recent years you’re *still* looking at a serious drop in details as you pass ISO 800 just like it was in 2007. Why? Just curious. I have an X-T2 and several great fuji lenses. What would be the benefit of picking up the Nikon Zfc?

    Thanks for going into details (including showing it on video) about the system becoming clumsy if one considers to reuse f-mount DX lenses via the ftz-adapter. Very good review. Q: How would You consider the difference between Nikon D5300 and this camera when it comes to video quality (camera not to be use for vlog or webcam; question is not about autofocus but video quality).

      I never use any of those for video; I prefer my iPhone so I don’t know. Alternatively I’d use a dedicated video camcorder for video.

    Does the dust all over the camera bother anyone else? It would make it so much easier to get dust on the sensor, especially when it take 3 or 4 tries to put the lens on the camera.

      I clean the cameras very carefully before I start shouting these videos. However I shoot in such high resolution at such close distances that you can see every speck much better than you could with the naked eye, thus my videos show everything. If I showed a typical camera this close it would look far worse! Thanks!

    I wish like hell they would produce a full frame, full retro size all metal version that works well with the old AI/AIS lenses. I miss my Nikkormat FT2.

      Nikon does. It is called the Nikon Df www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/df.htm

      Also every full frame nikon FX DSLR works great with the manual focus lenses. The Df adds retro looks and additional compatibility with pre-AI lenses.

      Shoot it at the resolution I did and light it as I did and you’ll see EVERYTHING, too. It’s a fact of showing cameras so you can see them rather than my face.

    How is $1100.00 an "inexpensive camera"? The thing is made in the land of cheapest possible labor and the materials are mostly plastic, so why so much money? Sure I like retro, but why do they only go half way with it in terms of quality and sensor size. Maybe it's a deal at say $700.00? Frankly I think of inexpensive somewhere in the realm of under $400.00
    I think people have gotten numb to spending money on phones, and odd-ball stuff. They need to demand more value for their money, they really do.

      Because that’s what people pay. It’s made in Thailand, an independent free country, not a Communist sewer like many of Nikon’s and Sony’s other lenses, so count your blessings. Thanks!

    Why why why wouldn't they put a built-in flash?!?! Especially with the amazing iPhone 13 Pro out there...a built-in flash is something that a phone will never do well. If it had a flash I'd sell my wife's D3500 and get her one of these...which I would then borrow all the time ;) I still might give it a shot though.

    How is different from the z50? As far as video? Does one have a Mic jack? Did not hear you mention it

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 роки тому

      here are the differences: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/z-fc.htm#compared as always, get off youtube and read my website if you want information rather than entertainment; all the details are at my written reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/z-fc.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z50.htm ; you'll have to look there for headphone jacks; I forget offhand which is shy I write it all down. Like my Zfc and Z50 product shots? All came from my D3 in my studio. Thanks!!!
