I really need to get back into reading again. Last time I picked up a book and completed it was October 2015. For me I adore reading 'Apocalyptic Fiction/Zombie Fiction' (my Favourite Book is 'Undead' - Kirsty McKay) where I grew attached to certain characters and would be sobbing my eyes out when one of my favourite characters die. I love a book that brings out emotions/reactions similar to watching a film or a tv show.
I would recommend reading People Like Me by Lynn Ruane. Lynn writes about her life which started out very very troubled and from a disadvantaged community and fought through to get a better life for herself and her children. She is an activist for disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. It is one of those books that is important to read no matter from which background you come from.
Watching your videos makes me feel so nostalgic, because I found your channel in like 2012 when I was about 13-14 😭 kinda in the beginning of really learning english still, because I’d just then discovered many english speaking youtubers and I mostly used social media in my own language...

I love keeping a log of books I read in a year! I started when I started my literature and creative writing degree. I'm particularly proud of myself for 2019 as I read 12 more books than in 2018! (44, most of which were for classes ;))

If one likes or never read "Meet Me At The Museum" by Anne Youngson then I would recommend "84 Charing Cross Road" (1970) by Helene Hanff (the 1987 movie, of the same name, with Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins is a condensed version). Like "Museum" it's a book of letters, but between a New York City writer (Helene) and a London antique book seller (Frank).
This is making me inspired to get back into reading. I've got a stack of unread books on my nightstand since last summer & I just can't pick up one. I used to be SUCH a bookworm.
Book slumps are the worst... But temporary!! Hope you get your reading spark back soon!

I did not read as many books in 2019. While I spent months and months doing a lot of nothing as I sat with my daughter in the hospital [she's doing a lot better now] my brain simply wouldn't compute reading or books. When I did begin reading again it was mostly books like UmiZoomis Saves the Dinosaurs.
The best book I ever picked based on it's cover was 'An elderly lady is up to no good' by Helene Tursten.
So happy whenever I see a video from you! I've never commented before, but I always like watching your videos, you have such a thoughtful way of approaching topics. One of your early faith videos where you mentioned journaling encouraged me to start a faith journal, and I'm still going with it, and it has been helpful. Also, your honesty is much appreciated (particularly jobs and health) as it brings a sense of solidarity with similar problems, and conversely, reminds me to be grateful for things I do have (like retail work). I just want to thank you for being yourself, and for sharing who you are, and I wish you the best in all you do.

I personally love all the books from Lemony Snicket, even if they are for teens, I feel as an adult, you can understand much more from it ! And if you like more fantasies I strongly recommend books from Cornelia Funke as Ink heart ! Good reading !!!
As a Dane I find it strange that people read books about 'Hygge' since it is a concept we just grow up around and are very subjective. I don't know it is strange xD
One audiobook that I listened to recently and would absolutely recommend would be Just Kids by Patti Smith. I did not know her nor her work yet the way she tells her story is truly magical. She makes the most common objects and encounters appear sacred. I also love her reading voice.

I’m not sure if you can get it in the UK and I’m also not sure if it’s entirely up your alley but I would highly highly recommend “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She’s a botanist, but is also Indigenous/Native, and she basically compares and unites scientific observation with Indigenous knowledge of plants and ecology. It has an absolutely gorgeous writing style, it made me cry in certain parts, and I think it’s a great way to help others understand our culture a little bit better. Sounds hefty but it doesn’t read like that at all, it’s a beautiful book and you might learn a lot! If you can find it, I would definitely recommend giving it a chance. PS. I’m so glad you’re back, missed your videos!

Wow! You've read more books in 2019 than I read in the entire 2010's!
My most recent reads are the 3 books thus far in Connie Glynn's Rosewood Chronicles series - books I didn't feel I was in the target demographic for, and certainly not the genre of book I've really gotten into before, but I love Connie's writing; a very pleasant surprise.
I've got Connie's books on my TBR but avoid because they're not my normal genre,but now I want to pick the first one up!

I’ve never read anything by Malorie Blackman, but she wrote a beautiful episode for Doctor Who, about Rosa Parks. This also made her the first non-white person to contribute a script for the show.

As someone who also works in the book industry, the excitement of getting free books (especially pre-publication) never quite wears out. I would definitely recommend Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman; it's probably my favourite of the books I read last year. I've also been getting into Emma Donoghue and absolutely devoured The Scarlet Letter last year, and am currently reading Slammerkin by her.

I love your book related videos so much. My favourite book from last year was Song of Sorrow by Melinda Salisbury. I've been slacking a bit with my reading recently but I hope to read more this year ❤

When you said fascinating more than once I thought to myself, "the Trekkie in her is coming out, specifically the Spock!". On the topic of Star Trek, I have a reading recommendation for you, if you haven't already read this one: William Shatner's biography of Leonard Nimoy entitled "Leonard: My 50 Year Friendship With A Remarkable Man". I just finished it a few days ago and I found it extremely informative, strangely profound, and very very funny throughout!
Also, I just read a very small collection of humorous poems entitled "It Could Be Verse". It's by actor Victor Buono who is probably best remembered for playing the villain King Tut on the 1960s Batman TV series. Most of the poems are about being fat and embracing that side of one's self in a world that shuns it. There are however some poems in there about topics such as being an actor, feigning grief, and there's an extremely moving tribute to musician Louis Armstrong. It's a very short read but I enjoyed it. It made me laugh out loud several times.

I started to watch your channel years ago, and I`ve been really inspired and touched by your old mental health videos. Maybe, it would be interesting for you to tell us about some books that helped you with depression\anxiety\loneliness\other things? I`ve read so much, but it`s very rare to find anything useful. One and a half years of therapy didn`t help me, so literature is kinda my last hope...
I know it may be hard for you to talk about mental health so publicly, and it`s perfectly fine if you don`t want to touch on these emotional topics. We`ll appreciate your thoughts and insights on any other thing you`re comfortable to share.

Just finished Revolt Against the Modern World and now I'm about to start diving into some of Edmund Burke's stuff. But I might try my hand at reading fiction for a change, as well.

i hope you don't mind me giving a recommendation but i've been fully capital O Obsessed with carl prekopp as a narrator. he has mostly done ya books and audio plays so i'm unsure if that's ur cup of tea but i truly recommend him to anyone and everyone because i think he is genuinely the best narrator i've ever listened to, and i've listened to a LOT, across multiple languages.

the best book i read in 2019 is 'the assault' by Dutch writer Harry Mulisch about guilt and how to deal with trauma and the past. it s short and brilliant.

I've taken a break, when my phone stopped working a year ago, I couldn't use the app anymore. I've been trying to re-start across the year. I NEED MORE CONFIDENCE! :). I was writing to James in french yesterday though and it was amazing what I could remember off the top of my head. x
Hi Rebecca 🙂 enjoyed this video, one book that I’d recommend that I think you might like is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. One of my colleagues recommended it to me and it offers such an interesting perspective on life, fate and the paths we take to get to where we need to be. It’s fiction, almost like a fable and it’s not very long so a fairly easy read ☺️ x apologies if this is one you’ve read already!

Blessed are the Misfits by Brant Hansen was a great read for me in 2019. It was an atypical and refreshing faith book.

Thank you for all the new book ideas! But for me as an asberger sounds "suffering from autism"... Really negative. I don't see it as an illness, it's who I am. But that is nit-picking, love that video (it just hurts me a little bit, because of that, I wanted to mention my view as an autist on autism). Greetings from germany!
I find it so difficult to talk about and I've been told I'm on the spectrum too. Do we 'have autism' or 'we are autistic'? As for the family, they really were struggling so it's not my applying a term, the Mother was struggling to support her daughter.

@@beckiejbrown I can understand your point of view and why you chose these words. Maybe it's also a coping mechanism for me to not want to see it as an illness. But when it's severe autism, it's of course another story.

I often use the phrase keep on keeping on.. just felt I had to add that bit of useless info. Beckie, my hubbie and I have been silent watchers or your videos for a couple of years now. Hygge is just the Danish word for chill or fun. The whole self care relaxation concept around is made up. If it helps you cool but it's not Danish in anyway.
