I don't usually comment but i had just had to say that the look on your face when you discovered the Beckie flick made me so happy ^^
You look gorgeous in green, this shade is so your colour brings out your eyes
I also prefer audiobooks!! I used to love reading to the point where there was one year I read 98 books, however once I started my senior year in high school the amount I read dropped dramatically for no particular reason, now I’m in my second year of university and I’m still struggling to get back into reading, but listening to audiobooks on my commute to university (about an hour) and during walks has been so helpful and I’ve been loving it! I sometimes struggle to pay attention so I have to rewind but it’s still so helpful ❤️📚
A Beckie flick!! 😃🌈👏🏻
It's not a stupid feeling at all. I went several years without reading at all. I have 20 books on my Goodreads challenge this year, but always change it when I get near my goal. I liked Wonder it;s a good book.
The girl in the tower is actually a sequel in the winter night trilogy. If you've not read it id recommended the bear and the nightingale, which is the first installment. I just read it and it's really good!
Good luck re-reading the shack. I really struggled to get into it. I finished the book out of sheer determination but truly have respect for anyone who could make any sense of it.
If you're interested in reading more classics, I'd recommend "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë. I'm about 100 pages in and even though I don't really like any of the characters, it's weirdly addictive.
I'm looking forward to your opinion on "Anna Karenina" I finished it in the summer of 2016 in german (native language) and I'll hopefully read it in English sometime and battle through it in Russian as well :D
But I really love it, even though it hit me between the eyes from a mental health perspective at the end, so maybe be prepared, I didn't expect it to that extent! You also learn more about Russia, the society etc. I think it's really interesting.
Oh and I love Lenin and Kitty
Yayy!! for the Beckie flick!!! 😁
Atonement is a good read, I hope you enjoy it. I am also glad to see you in high spirits, Becca!
'The Secret Garden' is easily my favourite Burnett book. I think you'll really enjoy it!
Also, the hair is looking super on point!
The movie adaptation of The Shack was magnificent as well 😍 I really enjoyed it and as a Christian it made me think so much more about the love God has for us
Kenzuki's Kingdom!! I loved this as a 10-year-old in school. We watched a stage play at our theatre Royal too.
“ Sun Tsu” is a great book too.
I‘ve read Wonder and I really liked it a lot and I think you‘d like it too. It teaches not to focus on how a person looks but who they are
The gifts of imperfection isn’t a religious book! I’ve got it and I loved it
thank you for this list! I want to read more in 2018, so this is perfect :)
This is a non-trich related video but I just want to say Beckie that I also have trich and I've had so much of a similar journey to you. I've cut it all off, grown it back, completely shaved it, grew it back again, and pulled out enough to make me completely bald. I know in your earlier videos you described the shaving trap and dealing with shaving, regrowing, and shaving again. And I just wanted to say that I know what it's like! Having these goals for YEARS and then falling short of them again and again.
Just a heads-up: The Girl in the Tower is a sequel, so if you haven't read The Bear and the Nightingale, you should do so before getting to that one (it is also very Gaiman-esque and I can definitely recommend it)
Your happiness at the Beckie flick made me happy, and a little emotional! It was such a lovely moment to capture
The short hair looks so good on you! I've been a subscriber for a couple of years and you've come so far. You're a great inspiration for people who suffer with anxiety. Thank you!
I recommend a book by Sheila Walsh called In the middle of the mess. I’m halfway through it and it is wonderful.
This video was the perfect antidote to a bad bout of anxiety - soothing and so calming to watch. Thank you... x
Hi Beckie,
I never commented anything on UA-cam.
The first video of yours I watched was maybe like 5 or 6 years ago. I recommended your channel to some friends, but then kind of stopped watching youtube apart from music videos.
Now I'm back! And I kind of watched all of your recent videos :D Was really waiting for this one. Maybe because I feel like I am at the same point in life. I'm also 25, have to finish my degree this year and become part of the adult world with a real job und want to become financially independent. Also I have to move back to my home country.Hope this big year of change will turn out very fine for both of us!
You are great und I like your authenticity.
Love
Anja
I was heart warmed that the book I gifted you made it onto this list. I hope you enjoy Brene as I did!
That. Cat. Is. Gorgeous. I’m not really a cat person as I’m extremely allergic, but that little man looks absolutely beautiful 😻
I used to love to read as a kid! For some reason I fell out of it, however, you inspired me to read more! Thank you! :D ❤️
Classics are on my to read list this year because I have always been too nervous to read them after I tried when I was about 11 and didn't understand them ahah. Kensukes Kingdom I have signed by the author from when I won a poetry competition as a kid and got to meet him. Also, I'd just like to say thank you so much for opening my eyes to Trich, if it weren't for your videos I would not have caught my anxiety and hair twiddling so soon and my hair defo would've suffered more! ❤
Hi Beckie! I love you girl! Hope you have an awesome 2018!
It's so nice to see a video from you! I've missed you after getting to watch you everyday last month. 😊
I recently bought The Secret Garden from a book fair I went to and really looking forward to reading it! I'm currently re-reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time which is one of my favourites. Definitely recommend if you haven't read it yet!
In case you'd like a visual adaption of Tess of the D'Urbervilles there's a film version from 1979 called simply "Tess", directed by Roman Polanski. Also I'm delighted to see a book by Wilkie Collins on your list. Enjoy your reading!
Thanks for sharing! I love to read and can easily read a book every couple days, but it's become less of a priority recently. One of my goals this year is to read (at least) a book every two weeks to start making it a habit again. I always love to see what others are reading!
I recommend a god book to read in 2018, the bible, something I must consult more often, God bless you and your family.
I wish I could read a lot of books but because of University I can't really enjoy reading... If I have been reading all day the last thing I wanna do is read more.
I remember that feeling. I think it's okay when you are reading for Uni... try not to let Uni take your love of reading from you... it may take time to rekindle
I'm surprised that this is somewhat of a common thing. Or maybe we've all just gathered here. It's really taken me a while to get into reading again. I changed degrees to a degree that required much less reading and slowly I've started reading a little more but I feel like if I were in my old course I couldn't do it unless it was a book I really loved so maybe try and find something that really makes you excited to read. Another thing is reading books that were adapted into movies/ shows/ plays that you've enjoyed. The Handmaid's Tale and Big Little Lies are amazing tv shows and after finding out they were based off of books, I had to read them and it's the fastest I've read books in years.
The beckie flick made my dayy congrats!!😻👏
Every time you do a Beckie flick my heart gets so warm and fuzzy 😊 your hair progress is amazing!! Xx
“The day my mother died I wrote in my journal, "A serious misfortune of my life has arrived." I suffered for more than one year after the passing away of my mother. But one night, in the highlands of Vietnam, I was sleeping in the hut in my hermitage. I dreamed of my mother. I saw myself sitting with her, and we were having a wonderful talk. She looked young and beautiful, her hair flowing down. It was so pleasant to sit there and talk to her as if she had never died. When I woke up it was about two in the morning, and I felt very strongly that I had never lost my mother. The impression that my mother was still with me was very clear. I understood then that the idea of having lost my mother was just an idea. It was obvious in that moment that my mother is always alive in me.
I opened the door and went outside. The entire hillside was bathed in moonlight. It was a hill covered with tea plants, and my hut was set behind the temple halfway up. Walking slowly in the moonlight through the rows of tea plants, I noticed my mother was still with me. She was the moonlight caressing me as she had done so often, very tender, very sweet... wonderful! Each time my feet touched the earth I knew my mother was there with me. I knew this body was not mine but a living continuation of my mother and my father and my grandparents and great-grandparents. Of all my ancestors. Those feet that I saw as "my" feet were actually "our" feet. Together my mother and I were leaving footprints in the damp soil.
From that moment on, the idea that I had lost my mother no longer existed. All I had to do was look at the palm of my hand, feel the breeze on my face or the earth under my feet to remember that my mother is always with me, available at any time.”
Thich Nhat Hanh - No Death, No Fear
Gosh I really want to read Quiet Power but I haven't yet! 😱😁
I also adooore the penguin editions of the classics; I also plan on reading more of them this year, especially the Jane Austen novels. I read the book after I watched the non-BBC version but because the version is so perfect it made me appreciate the book even more
Yes that’s my favourite adaption of The Secret Garden too! An absolute favourite of mine.
Beckie, your videos are so real and calming. Thank you for existing
I really do recommend Scarlet, and the rest of the Lunar Chronicles.
MollyPrewittWeasley yesss they're so good
My goal is 50 books this year and I would recommend the book 'we're all mad here' which is about anxiety.
Do you prefer real books or using a Kindle? Always curious as to people's thoughts as I prefer paper but use a kindle
Ryan True Same here, I prefer 'real' (as in: paper) books, but I do most of my reading on my Kindle. It's so much more practical!
I like how light the kindle is 😊
could you talk about these books when you finish them?
Beckie, you look so beautiful!❤️. Love your energy
Wow, exciting! I've been trying to read more too!
"The Woman in White" is one of the best books I have read. Be warned though, the first 50 pages are really BORING. Then later on, you find they contained lots of important clues. It's well worth the long read.
My absolute favorite is "The Count of Monte Cristo." But if you get it try not to get any movie adaption, and choose the longest version you think you can read! I have watched three versions of the movie and they were all good, but none do the book justice. It's awesome. I almost wish I could read it in French.
my goal is also to read 25 books! A few years ago i was reading a ridiculous amount of books- nearly 100 in one year. in a weird way, i feel like the happier i get the less i read, so i suppose the drop in book consumption is a good thing!
Wow - that's huge! Though I guess it depends on the books you were reading. I know I used to read Horrible Historys and could read a few in one day alone. Some books are harder to get through, in addition to being longer than others. It's not the amount, it's what we take from them! :D x
I wouldn't consider Brene Brown a Christian author although she herself is Christian, her others are more self help oriented, but I haven't read The Gifts Of Imperfection! I'd love to know your thoughts on it :)
Yes, Cloud Atlas is such an amazing book! one of my first english books (english is not my native laguage) what an adventure!!!
You're going to love the girl of ink and stars... I work at waterstones and recently read it... Very vivid descriptions for that age group of book and beautifully written .... Enjoy xx
That pink eyeshadow is just gorgeous on you 💓
Can't wait to read a lot of books this year too 😍
Had to read Women in White during school, little slow at the start (worth knowing that is was a paper serial), but really gets going and v enjoyable 🙂
I can say Tess of the D'Urbervilles but I can't remember if I spelled it correctly. I listened to that on audiobook and LOVED it. It also totally broke my heart. The wheat on the cover might have to do with how much time Hardy spent describing the landscapes. The 5 hour adaptation did a pretty good job with visuals of landscapes. Ahhhhhh that story will forever make me emotional just thinking about it.
Omg I just finished the lunar chronicles Scarlet and Winter are my faves of this series
GONE WITH THE WIND.
I absolutely loved that adaptation of the secret garden too! I highly recommend the audio book read by Karen Savage which is free on librivox (its listed as version 2). Her reading is so lovely to listen to.
SCARLET IS AMAZING PLEASE READ IT! It was one of my favorites books last year.
The Shack, Little Women, and Wonder are three of my favorite books! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
The shack has been made into a movie , its amazing ❤️
The 27th is my birthday 💕
I want to know if Wonder is good! I had been thinking about reading it. I have three books to read already. The journal version of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a book called The Woman in the Window, and Chalk Man. I’ll have to look into the other books you’re wanting to read as well!
It was so nice to hear that you have had a good week. You do seem a lot happier again!
That day I was, things have been very up and down, filming in a good moment
Beckie Jane Brown I'm just glad you're continuing on as normal despite everything, you have a lot of will power X
I've just started reading (I'm at book 3), The legend of the ice people by Margit Sandemo. It's quite a long book series with 47 books, but so far I really like it :)
I saw The Shack in the thumbnail and thought, "No, Beckie! You have such lovely taste, don't do that your lovely self!" But other things on this list sound de-licious. I'm happ you're attempting classics, that's become my taste as well. I may have to steal some of them. Hugs, Beckie.
Have you read it or seen the film? Are you Christian and disapprove it?
Yup, finally going back - !
I will fess up, I couldn't finish it. It just wasn't my thing. It seemed to be trying to hard. Mack can't get a bump on his head, the bump emerges, "“like a humpbacked whale breaching the wild waves of his thinning hair.” Unfortunately, the theology isn't explored enough to make up for it. If you enjoy it, I'm glad. I'd love to hear more about why!
Am I Christian... When you find out, you tell me. My family is Christian, very. Both immediate and extended. But me, well, we'll see. :)
Back to classics is a good place to go. Don't they make life feel more meaningful?
Sorry for the long reply. Hugs, Beckie. Thanks for the replies and hearts. With all the comments you get it's kind. I hope my comments give back a little what you give me.
Ahh I've just finished the Girl in the Tower yesterday and I loved it! But it is a sequel to The Bear and the Nightingale so you'd probably need to read that first if you haven't.
Have you read The Five People You Meet in Heaven? I had to read it several years ago for my freshman orientation class in university, and while I don’t really remember the whole thing it seems like something you might enjoy reading.
I’ve set a goal to read 25 books this year as well :)
I think The Secret Garden the BOOK is far better than any movie/TV adaption. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I was just wondering when you would post!
12:45 I think you did! You mentioned it in 2012 in one of your University vlogs.
15:53 Oh what a lovely idea to list all the books : D
Good luck and also lots of fun with all these books :)
This year I want to reread Harry Potter from 1 to 7. After five years or so I really need to return to Hogwarts
Beckie I love your jumper! I'm assuming it's a charity shop bargain but do you know where it's originally from?
Quiet Power is very inspiring! 😊
Tess is a tough book and I didn't love it, but I remember really liking a character whose name i can't remember
the Thomas hardy book cover is important to the story, farming= ears of corn, year before last they found the bone of a dead woman in Dorchester and its the woman who inspired hardy to write tess-i live I a village called puddletown which hardy called in his book as weatherburywhich is about 3 miles from where he was born, enjoy and I hope better very very soon
So good to hear from you again :) Good to hear you've had a good week. Re: The Shack - have you seen the movie that they did recently? Definitely recommend. Bring the tissues. Does it very well.
I was actually completely unaware of the film adaption until this week. I'd been told they'd tried to make this back in 2010 but it never came to fruition... so to know there's a new one - ahh!!!! :D
I know! Sam Worthington is the lead. Does a great job. Lots of really lovely details that come over from the book.
I would be very interested in your thoughts on Tess after completion. The characters drive the story, but they are incredibly flawed. I was so angry at the end because of how things turned out for them. I understand it's a classic and there are underlying meanings and lessons to be learned but I literally wish I could somehow go back and un-read it
I would suggest "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Go Set a Watchmen" by Harper Lee. I would say that "To Kill a Mockingbird" is like "Noughts and Crossman" by Malorie Blackmanin which it deals with racial inequality and racial heroism as well. "Go Set a Watchman" is the follow up to in which the main character finds things out about her father and how deep bigotry and racism goes in her community.
If you like High Fantasy, think "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R. R. Martin and "The Chronicles of Narnia" series by C.S. Lewis, then youll also like the "Inheritance Cycle" by Christopher Paolini, I wouldn't suggest the movie "Eragon" as the movie is horrible compared to the book
The Shack is a great read Beckie
Wow. I want to read all of these books now, but I have no money to buy them (or others I would like to read). .__. And why do they all have so beautiful covers? Some of them look just.... magical? *-*
I hope you feel a bit better, Rebecca!
Hey, I wanted to suggest, if you don`t have enough money to buy books:
buy used ones: booklooker, amazon, abebooks, zvab.com... hope that helps
Anja Lulala Hi, thank you for your recommendations. Unfortunately I don't even have money to buy used books at the moment, but I will definitely keep these websites in mind. Thank you so much!
I just read the Secret Garden for the first time and loved it! Hope you do too!
Love Letters to the Dead is my favourite book. I adore it. You really should read it, it's great.🙂
i want you to read no longer human by osamu dazai. i dont know if you gonna like it or not. its just scary for me that how much i can relate to the book. but its a very beautiful book anyway, so i think you should give it a shot.
The bbc are releasing a woman in white tv show, it was filmed in Belfast last year
Ooh! Thanks for the heads up!
Beckie Jane Brown totally wasn’t expecting a reply but yes :) I work as an extra and with horses on stuff filmed in Northern Ireland! Like
Game of thrones
Just wondering, would you prefer if we clicked "Add Friend" or "Follow Reviews" on Goodreads?
I don't know to be honest! Don't mind. x
I think you should do narrations for audio books.
I've been trying, no luck so far... x
I'm reading The Brutal Truth by Lee Winter right now. First book I've read in probably 8 years... Crazy.
you should be an audio book reader
E. A. Calvey I think she actually mentioned auditioning for a few? I could be wrong.
Right! Nothing come through yet... x
I LOVED THE BOOK WONDER AND AUGGIE AND ME
Id deffo recommend A Song For Tomorrow by Alice Peterson, just started reading and its brilliant, i have the illness that its based on❤️❤️
Looks like you've got a great collection of books there! I'm making videos as well now about books I read :)
In 2016 I read 30 books
In 2017 I read 3 books
In 2018 I'm aiming for 12
Aww I had no idea you were a fellow Neil Gaiman fan! ❤ HAPPY READING 👍❤
Oh yes and you too! x
It’s ‘derb’ like ‘verb’. If that helps 😊
Minimalisticafulnessy covers!
Beautiful! Absolutely amazing video! I am so incredibly happy to see a video from you in my feed. Made my miserable day into a brighter one. In regards to Tess of the D'Urbervilles - there is a mini- series (starring Eddie Radmayne and Gemma Arterton) which is stunning and I needed to see it before reading and understanding the book completely. I had to read it for university and is one of the stories that stick with you.
Again, thank you for posting despide the hardship you have been through. I am also so excited for your next bullet journal video. 😍
Brené Brown. I love that women!! She gave very awsome TedTalks. You will love her. She is a researcher on Shame and Vulnerability!
OMG My Secret garden, my favorite movie. WHen she walk with her boots at the caslte the sound it makes I try to reproduce it some many time. I wanted her shoes all my life. I dont know why.
Would also recommend Sarah Bessey and Rachel Held Evan books if your interested in some books about faith and feminism! :)
Hiya Beckie!
If you enjoy YA books, I made a list of all 700+ YA books releasing in 2018 here: tinyurl.com/y8b7qdeg. Hope it’s helpful! ❤️
