Midian is what got me into them, I never heard anything like it before, I immediately became a COF fan after that 5 years ago. Dani is still one of my favorite vocalists in all of Metal.
What would be super cool is if you create a public playlist of all your favorite cradle the filth songs. Their discography is so big I don't have time to listen to it all. Make it happen friend!
Honestly, they never recorded a bad album. Love their entire catalog!
Damnation and a day is by far my favorite.
The Year is 1997 and I was more into Morbid Angel, Deicide and Obituary, I listened Dark throne, Burzum and Emperor but I wasn't interested and the year 98 came and Listened to Cruelty and The Beast and Cradle for the very first time and that was an instant crush, I started to love Cradle and they finally drove me into Black metal, there's so much to thanks to cradle and since then I've been a hardly fan
1) Cruelty And The Beast 2) Dusk...And Her Embrace 96 3) V Empire 4) Midian 5) Damnation And A Day 6) Bitter Suites To Succubi 7) Total Fucking Darkness (the Goetia demo) 8) Midnight In The Labyrinth 9) Nymphetamine 10) Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder 11) Existence Is Futile 12) Dusk And Her Embrace 95, 13) The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh 14) Live Bait For The Dead 15) Hammer Of The Witches 16) Cryptoriana 17) Manticore And Other Horrors 18) From The Cradle To Enslave 19) Thornography 20) Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa 21) Evermore Darkly ... Was VERY difficult making this list lol but love it all
you missed Damnation and a day
@@user-hw9cj2nu5f you missed your eyes -check 5
It's also my favorite band, I first listened to it when playing Brutal Legend, Her Ghost In The Fog plays during a battle in the campaign.
I like the divide Cradle's sound into eras:
Era 0 - demos and death metal sound, personally I haven't listened to most of that and should definitely check them.
Era 1 - the golden age from Principle do Bitter, it's where they sound most consistent imo, all the releases in this period are flawless.
Era 2 - from Damnation to Manticore, has its ups and downs, the band experimented a lot with more synths and goth sounds and themes, Godspeed is by far my favorite from this period, I love how Dani uses more of his low growlings, while keep the high pitched screams at a minimum (don't hate it, just think it sounds great here).
Era 3 - Hammer to Existence, it definetely feels like a comeback, the songs feel more complex and elaborate, Cryptoriana manged to become one of all time favorite albums, it's just too good.
I'd just like to point that, as a composer, Dani lyricism is beyond compare, people hate them for whatever reason, but you can't deny he's a great writer. Also, Sarah was a key element to their earlier sound, too bad they didn't gave her more time and space to shine, Lindsay was a close second as one of the best female vocalists they had.
Cradle is one of those bands I've never got into, but honestly don't mind Nymphetamine. My main memory of them is Bloodstock '09 and I'm amazed they ever returned after that😬 I'm liking the Deep Dive idea- would love to see Opeth next
Heaven Torn Asunder and Haunted Shores on their new live album are both amazing. The release after the bridge on Haunted Shores is bliss.
Cradle of Filth es una banda muy importante para mi, fue la primera banda de metal que escuché y hasta la fecha me sigue sorprendiendo con su música. Nunca entendí por qué los catalogan como Black Metal.
It is great to hear how you talk about the music you love with passion and honesty. I tend to nostalgically link every one of those albums with certain periods in my life when I was listening to them, doesn't always have to be the time when an album came out. It was my first "black" metal band to discover when a friend gave me a copy of Dusk... on a cassette. I knew almost all the lyrics from most albums by heart, and although I still see them as masterfully done, and them, along with the music, really helped me process some dark emotions. But, they are too complex and I really could find more meaning in simpler but intelligent lyrics from other bands. Still, every album has at least two great songs, some albums I honestly didn't listen to much, but I am glad they still have so much to give and didn't get tired after all these years and all those great albums!
The band is a legend 😊😊Dusk and her Embrace was the first cd I got into them.
Thank you Britain for giving the world Cradle of Filth!!
The fall of 1998 I got Dusk and Cruelty on CD. What a great fucking moment. I've been a diehard fan ever since and saw them live with Wednesday 13 and Ravenblack.
I saw that same tour in Dallas
Great deep dive questy!...have you ever thought of approaching Dani for an interview?
hey Questy,,,
Can we do a small podcast sometime?
Im nobody, on social networks, but I am a heavy metal scholar of 40 years ~
My first was Damnation and a day.... i love this bunch of vampire bastards
Love this format, from start to finish, compared to the ranking format from worst to best ❤
It was Dani's birthday on the 25th, mine on the 26th :D i'm a huge Cradle fan, and I once owned all 4 of the demo's and the ultra rare demo era t-shirts. I own every thing else though, just difficult times means Ebay and Discogs lol. I'll get them back eventaully; re start the hunt!
Been a huge fan since Dusk came out (got it right around that time), and people were already on their bullshit in the black metal circles. But I didn't care, even though I myself was a bit of an elitist prick. C'mon. I was a teen. Lol. Besides. Half those fuckers secretly still listened to them, using their girlfriends as an excuse or some shit. That, to me, speaks of the quality of the band. Still love Cradle today as an old fuck. Lol. Anyway, great vid, Questy. Cheers, man.
Midian through Godspeed is my favorite Cradle era. I particularly like the "Harder Darker Faster" version of Thornography with the extra songs and the cover of "Stay" is excellent, like it a lot better than the new Ghost cover. Thornography and Godspeed helped get me through some tough times in my life as nuts as that may sound.
Here's how I divy up their "eras"
1. Early Cradle= The 3 demo tapes
2. Golden Age= Principle Through Midian
3. The Silver Age= Bitter Suites- Nymphetamine
4. Meh= Thornography
5. Bronze Age= Godspeed through Manticore
6. New Golden Age= Hammer of The Witches onward.
Cradle of Filth are one of the bands that got me into extreme metal and I love their first 4 albums. Some of the best in symphonic black metal. The next 4 albums are more extreme gothic metal but are still great. I did not like Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa and I thought Manticore was easily their worst. Hammer of the Witches though is an amazing album and I thought easily their best since Midian. Cryptoriana and Existence Is Futile are also amazing and also brings back that early Cradle of Filth sound.
Honestly I used to always think Thornography was their worst but more and more I come to see Manticore as their lowest point. That albums isn't bad per se it's just there's nothing memorable about it. Like I've listened to it a good bit and still there's very few riffs I can even remember about it. Every song just sounds so much the same like it was just phoned in. Seems to be confirmed by the fact that after that album Paul left again and said something to the effect of "I just wasn't having fun anymore" and that really shows. Like at least Thornography was them trying something new and experimenting with their sound ( even if it didn't vibe with most of their fans)
You should do More these deep dive videos
Dimmu Borgir's original Stormblast is what got me into black metal, more precisely Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen and Sorgens Kammer. Buttttt, once I heard Cradle of Filth's Nymphetamine (the song) and the full Midian album, I knew they'd be a keeper. And from then I went on to check their entire discography, to me after Bitter Suites To Succubi things went downhill, but picked right back up with Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder, which I still consider their best from the modern era, alongside Cryptoniana and Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa. Overall the past 17 years have been a positive trend for CoF, looking forward to their next release and seeing them for the first time in February this year. :D
As for my tops... top 5 CoF albums:
5 Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder
4 Dusk and Her Embrace
3 Cruelty and the Beast
2 Midian
1 The Principle of Evil Made Flesh
Top 5 CoF songs:
5 From the Cradle to Enslave
4 Bathory Aria
3 The Rape and Ruin of Angels
2 Tearing the Veil from Grace
1 Summer Dying Fast
“Doo tatta natta meta net neh neh..”
Translated: “Two thousand fattened years like maniacs, have despoiled our common grave. Now what necrophagus second coming begs from the cradle to enslave?”
But your version was metal af too😂
This was my first song as well. 🤘
❤🔥
My first song was Her Ghost in the fog with the amazing video, than I bought Dusk, Principle and Midian
Looking forward to this . I don't think Cradle have any bad albums with them ranging from good to perfect. Really hoping for some vinyl re-releases soon (Midian in particular). Thanks for consistently great content, wish I could give you more than 2 bags of Haribo
Thanks and I’ll enjoy those haribo!
I like em =)
They were one of my first ventures into extreme metal. Vempire and, especially, Dusk are fucking amazing albums. I'm awaiting a proper Vinyl re-release of Dusk (the MFN version) will it ever happen?? After some of the OG members left prior to Midian it became a bit stale but in recent years got more interesting again. They've had 100 members and I guess Dani likes it this way.
I honestly stopped listening to Cradle after Thornography but i loved everything up till then and honestly i need to check out the last three.
Not the biggest cradle fan I have a couple albums, there abit hit and miss for me personally but they do have some tracks that Slap.. my favourite track has got to be the smoke of her burning, underrated track that, never hear people really talk about that one
Been saying the same for years, nice to see someone else flying the flag for that track. An absolute belter. The lyrics are amazing and the vocals are some of Dani’s best I’d say.
I respect Cradle of Filth as they were a huge gateway band into black metal for a lot of folks (not me, though). But I have never really dove into their discography too much.
Oh, and Dani Filth's feature on Bring Me The Horizon's Wonderful Life is fun and I unironically can't wait for his future collaboration with everyone's favourite ginger Ed Sheeran!
I've been a Metalhead for 15 years almost and I've been practicing my vocals since the beginning. Dani Filth was my inspiration in my teens and I kind of equated his vocal style with my own vocal style. I sound very similar to him when I scream too lol..
Edit: Cruelty and the beast as well as Evermore Darkly and Babylon AD album are my favorite albums from COF especially Cruelty and the beast.
Questy we need a best metal albums of the 80s please 🙏
Don't know what album from but Her ghost in the fog is 🔥🔥
I think MIDIAN was my introduction to Cradle of Filth
Dusk and Her Embrace is still my favorite of theirs.
Queen of Winter, Throned is best Cradle song ever. Nick is one of the most technically proficient drummers of all time. Listen to those drum fills at around the 7 or so minute mark
The drums on Queen Of Winter are absolutely off the chart
@@thewelshbeersnob2783 Nick Barker is one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Mostly only fans of Dimmu and Cradle know how good he is. Like it's not that he's fast that makes him good ( although he can play fast asf) It's the fact the he's SOOOO precise and creative. Another good example is on Thirteen Autumns and a Widow during the end of the song that slow part that starts with "Under lacerations of dawn she retured" and he just does these like really infectious drum fills that you can't but air drum along with. Anyway though I could gush about his drumming all day LOL
I have been a fan since 1999. I love all except I still can't get into Existence is Futile. Top 5 are
1.Cruelty and the Beast
2. Dusk and Her Embrace
3. Damnation and a Day
4. Midian
5. Principal of Evil Made in the Flesh
Nothing is bad. Manticor and Existence are their least greatest. Of their new era Hammer of the Witches is my favorite
Oh give EIF a few spins more bro. It unfolded to me after a few spins more❤
@@VulgrimOfficial the best things do unfold over time. I used to not get Darkly Darkly now I absolutely love it. I'll come back around to EIF. My favorite band. The filth changed my life. I'll always give them another chance
I really love early Cradle of filth. Mid period is a bit of a mixed bag for me, I really liked that stuff as a teenager but I don't think it has held up nearly as well to me as everything they released up and until Damnation and a day.
I will agree though that Under huntress moon is one of the best songs Cradle ever recorded and I feel like this is a song that could have easily been on any earlier Cradle of filth albums. You could have stuffed it into Dusk and it would have fit perfectly.
The more recent albums are a bit better in my opinion compared to the Mid period.
Cryptoriana I think is the best album they did since Midian.
Dusk And Her Embrace is my favorite from Cradle, as well as one of my all time top tier BM albums.
One of those perfect albums. Production, playing, style, innovation, lyrics, vocals...you name it.
Love this band so much. I was the same, first black metal band i ever got into. Principal of Evil Made Flesh was given to me as a birthday present when i was 8 in early 2000s. I had no idea what music this was but it was so angry i loved it 😅😅😅 Still my favourite of theirs 😎🙏
1) Principal
2) Total F***** Darkness
3) Cruelty and the Beast
4) Dusk
5) Damnation
6) Existence
You didn't get a cof album when you were 8 stop lying on the Internet to seem cool
For a favourite band you managed to butcher not only the Cacophonous records name but even Cryptoriana album name…
Most underrated song: Tortured Soul Asylum
Midian is not just one of the best BM records ever. It's also one of the best concept albums ever. Flawless and pepper in some Doug Bradley? Goat status.
Cradle was one of my gateway bands into extreme music. I was in love with this girl who turned me on to Cruelty. Everyone gives them shit for their mid 2000s output. I think those records are great. I think they still hold up better than A LOT of music from that time that everyone wants to hold up now. They are the biggest black metal band, the end.
I agree, apparently they are working on a new album. Hoping this continues the bands amazing resurgence (although I love everything they have done)
0:28 😂
Loved their first 4 then after Nicholas barker and Stuart left I lost touch with them. Dusk was their best I thought I was obsessed with that album and vampire.
Vempire.. fukin word prediction shit
Quest For Fire
1) Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder
2) Nymphetamine
3) Thornography
4) Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa
5) Midian
Not a single one of CoF's best in that top 5...
In my opinion Paul Allender 's return was a huge mistake. Midian is good but was worst than the previous 3 and after that I can't stand any CoF album with him in it. I hate Allender. I hate his face and his music! 😂
Thornography and Manticore are awful but I think Paul Allender gets far too much hate. He’s a very talented bloke.
@@thewelshbeersnob2783 I didnt even knew there was general hate towards him. From my PoV it is not hate, just a realisation that from the moment he stepped in again, the quality droped alot and since he left the quality got better... Oh well!
