Cruelty bought thee orchids chorus riff is STILL one of my all time fave riffs its just so friggin badass! Dusk will always be my fave its their masterpiece but Cruelty is certainly up there right along side it. COF in the 90's were untouchable.

I'd like to think most COF fans consider Dusk And Her Embrace and Cruelty And The Beast to be the heart and soul of the band. After that it really does seem to vary wildly as far as album preference. Personally I think their 94-01 era was the "Golden Age" as it were. After that I really like Damnation And A Day, Godspeed On The Devils Thunder and Cryptoriana.
The band has never been the same after Stuart Anstis left…. 😔
I agree but I group midian in there, although that was the start of some change. I love this band and they have alot of good albums but yeah, the core center heart of their discog are dusk cruelty and midian

I want to say my favorite is Dusk and her Embrace, but it’s probably Midian. Cruelty and the Beast, Damnation both are contenders for greatest as well.
The new album is great. It combines the elements of Cryptoriana and Hammer Of The Witches, but with shorter songs. Cradle is on a roll.
Cruelty is so beautiful. Didn't need a remaster
Cruelty is indeed fucking beautiful. I'd disagree that it didn't need a remaster though, the composition had so much power it demands bringing the drums to the fore and turning the bass up and ditching the tinny overbearing treble on everything. But even despite the shit mix, that record still managed to be something else entirely.

They are having a serious renaissance with their last two albums. Honestly more and more I am considering them their best. The riffs are so much better
Latest two albums are miles better than Manticore i'll give you that
I felt like that when those albums were released, but to me most of the songs on their last album just went through my head without anything standing out. It's a lot more riff focused without any focus on the keyboard and symphonic elements themselves, this shows in the production in and of itself. In the older Cradle of Filth albums you could hear any symphonic elements in the forefront, in these new ones they're just background noise without any complex structure.

Great video! I watch these videos to get a synopsis of what albums of bands I should be checking out. In doing these album rankings, you should keep in mind that most viewers aren't going to be as familiar with the bands or albums as you are. It's fun to watch you gush about the music, but also usually when you say "you know what I'm talking about", I indeed do not know what you are talking about lol.
Anyway, time to go listen to Midian.

Great ranking! It's always interesting to hear other opinions on which albums are the best. I'm a massive Cradle of Filth fan, so any type of discussion about their discography is intriguing to me. "Nymphetamine" is my favorite album in their entire catalog, and I think it always will be, because it was the first album I ever heard from the band, and it got me into them. "Dusk...And Her Embrace" is my second favorite, and after that, it gets more difficult, because I love them all. The brand new album "Existence is Futile" would probably rank #3 for me already - it's that good! "Hammer of the Witches" is up in my top 5 for sure. "The Manticore and Other Horrors" is awesome, too, in my opinion. I love that you gave props to "Thornography"! I've always loved that album and never really understood the flack it gets.

Why the hell didn't I see this video earlier. I've been listening to Cradle of filth for over a decade. I love them so much that I practiced my vocals to sound like Dani Filth. My favorite albums ranked would be

The other albums in my opinion are meh.. I'm 25 and I found them when I was 15. I remember coming home from school putting my backpack down going On Demand with Comics back when I had Comcast, and I was scrolling in the metal section and I saw "Cradle Of Filth- Forgive Me Father (I Have Sinned).

Undoubtedly Cruelty and The Beast, this one strikes in its own way! Though picking one of the first COF 3 albums as my favourite one is really difficult for me (they both sound great) I choose Cruelty and The Beast because it's really melodic and I like the artwork (especially the Re-Mistressed version!).
Cruelty and The Beast is for me Cradle's peak of songwriting and lyrics. Stuart's great compositions (his greatest without a doubt!), Nicolas' fantastic drum work, Lecter's keyboards and Dani's triumphant banshee screams mix so perfectly that the music becomes really enjoyable, if not the best of all COF!
And I do consider Cruelty to be Cradle's best, because not only it has its own unique magic and power, but also because everyone does his best here. One of the most important albums that I have listened since I got to black metal, along with "Blut und Krieg", "Tales from Eternal Dusk", "For All Tid", "Strength & Honour" and "Transylvanian Hunger", nothing more to say! Artistically, musically and lyrically, this is one hell of a masterpiece!! 👿🤘
e.g: I consider "Thornography" to be the worst COF album. This one is really repetitive and generic and the cover sucks a lot with the pseudo-heavy female vocals! What the hell were they thinking when they made this one?

Midian's goddamned good, yes. That was the first Cradle record I ever heard, worked backwards through their catalog from there. Prefer Cruelty but Midian has an absolutely fucking vicious sound to it that I don't think they've matched since.

@@davetorres3906 Yeah, if you're a guitarist the stuff on Midian's just straight-up a lot of fun to play too. Not overly glossy or technical, just fast and heavy and groovy as shit while also maintaining that gloriously cringey goth feel. Cthulhu Dawn's a great warmup

My favorite used to be CATB. Now I think it is Dusk. On the opening song Heaven Torn Asunder, I swear they turn up the sound x3 when he screams “ATTACK!” It feels like you’ve been kicked in the face. I love it!

Your last five are my top five. 'Godspeed' is where a high degree of subtlety began to permeate the music. It goes by so quickly that many people don't notice the subtlety but it's there in all the albums from 'Godspeed' onwards. The craftsmanship, production, composition, and execution on their last five albums (especially the drummer's contribution) makes the earlier albums sound half-assed and poorly realised , to my ears.

@@Ktulured55 Ok, I over exaggerated. I like them too. I'll retract the "meh" and just say that I have a preference for everything from "Godspeed" onwards. I did come to the band later - round about the time of "Damnation" , which I like a lot. So I heard "Damnation" first and then worked backwards through the previous releases. It's all good. But, to my ears, there's a higher degree of craftsmanship and execution displayed on the later albums.

Cruelty and the beast is def my favorite album. It brings me back to the days id go to the Renaissance festival and I remember a small booth playing that album and honestly was a majestic night that I can never forget. Plus a album about Elizabeth bathory is just screams a symphonic masterpiece. I still have my vintage cruelty and the beast shirt from 98 and apparently it sells over $500 dollars wtf but yeah my favorite track is definitely bathory aria.
Just discovered you today. Your list is solid. My biggest disagreement is Thornography. That is their worst album for me. I didn't think it was catchy, trying maybe, but then sounds bad and cheesy. It's their only album I could not make myself keep listening to. Anyways, I loved this video, and you did a great job! You are so young! The first time I ever heard Cradle was when Cruelty and the Beast just had come out. 😁

I loved Cradle of Filth back in the day but lost interest in them afterThornography. (all the lineup changes didn't help either) I'll rank the albums I know and like

By far, first for me is Cruelty and the Beast. The new mix they did to it makes me love it even more. Second for me is Midian, though I hate the mix it's kinda what Enthrone is for Dimmu. Dusk and Her Embrace is a bit too gothic for me, but their creativity peaked on this one I guess. The Principle of Evil made Flesh. I love the thrash elements on this one (and on the Cradle's first 4 albums, but I think this is the one with the most thrashy moments). The last one that I kinda enjoy from them is Damnation and a Day, which is kinda good... but the sound is so washed up, and they focused on... "smaller" ideas (musically) which they emphasized the crap out of them... I guess that's what I don't like about it. It's like a narrative (which it is in lyrics) but the songs are not... "alive". Too much sticking to the patterns.
Manticore is nice! Just Dani s voice is not so cool but the songs are great, they made it 3 members with Allender touch well present. I don't have all the album but plan to have them all soon. my top is Midian, Biiter suites, Godspeed, Cruelty, Manticore, then the last album
I WISH I could get into all their new stuff but I just can‘t. It‘s I think mainly the guitars and the production as well as lack of ideas. For me too, 94-01 is untouchable and after that there is still many stand alone tracks on later albums and nymphetamine is still a whole nostalgic vibe but around thornography& godspeed they lost themselves completely. You can literally listen to them fall apart and losing energy and passion for the project. I understand that dani makes a living out of the brand cradle of filth and I think it‘s cool that he tries to get his voice back on track. The two new 2023 songs are a great effort and for the first time in years there‘s new ideas and melodies. I sadly still can‘t handle the crystal clear production and especially the sterile tone of the guitars which just don‘t sound like cradle but rather any other new metal band around.
i' m the voice out of the chorus, for me their best album (among the ones that i know, because i' m not a big fan but i like them) is "Damnation and a Day"
Mydian and Cruelty and the beast are of course masterpieces, i really like them, but not at the same level in my opinion.

I was obsessed with Cradle back in the late 90's. I can't do anything after Cruelty. Bitter Suites was okay, but idk they just lost their magic around Midian.

Cradle of filth doesn't have any terrible albums, but it sure has a couple of very mid ones that I will avoid putting on if given any other choice.
The bottom of the barrel for them as far as I'm concerned is Darkly Darkly and Manticore, I don't enjoy these very much.
Godspeed is decent, has some good tracks on it.
Hammer of the witches, I need to give this one some time. It came out during the time when I had given up on Cradle after the very disappointing Manticore and Darkly Darkly and I never really gave the chance it deserves.
Thornography has some great tracks and some tracks I cannot stand. But I'm always up for putting on Dirge Inferno and Under Huntress moon, those two are killer!

Existence is futile, pretty solid overall and has a few really amazing tracks.
Nymphetamine is kinda the same as Thornography for me, some great songs, some decent ones and some mid ones, but it has a lot of nostalgic value for me and I enjoy it more for that reason.
Cryptoriana, what a return to form this was! Great album! I love it!
Damnation and a day, now were getting into the truly great ones and it will only get better from here!
Bitter suites to succubi, my first Cradle album! Love it, love it, love it!
Midian, my second ever Cradle album (at least if we're not counting the compilation album Lovecraft and witch hearts and Live album Live bait for the dead, both phenomenal btw), Midian is flawless, not a single weak song.
Vempire, technically not an album but we're gonna count it anyways, it's fucking amazing!
Cruelty and the beast, it's not just one of the best Cradle albums, it's one of the best metal albums period.
And finally, can there ever be any doubt? Dusk and her embrace is one of the strongest contenders for the title of my personal favorite album from any artist ever.

I was pretty disappointed by The Metal Trenches COF tier list. I swear he just does certain things for attention, like ranking Dusk And Her Embrace low on his tier list.
The last album I've heard from Cradle of Filth was Nymphetamine. I didn't like it very much back in the day, and I've never heard the most recent ones. I wonder which is best. Read many good things about Hammer of the Witches.
It seems like the general consensus is that "Hammer of the Witches" is the best among their more recent string of albums. But now that their brand new album "Existence is Futile" is out, I have to say, it's even better than that one! My favorite album is "Nymphetamine", and I think this newest one is the best release since then. I like all of their albums, though, so it's hard to pick. "Thornography" and "The Manticore and Other Horrors" are great albums, in my opinion.
Old COF is best, so my list is : Cruelty (remastered), Dusk, Principle, Midian, and after that don't care much, of new album finding Darkly pretty good mostly cause Lilith Imaculate is such great song.

Cruelty is the best, agreed. The riffs, songwriting, atmosphere, everything. The downside? The mix is utter shit, way too much treble on everything and the drums were muffled into the background and sound like a faint marching snare or something...... which is a goddamned shame because that was some of Nich's finest work. But even despite the shit mix, the thing manages to fucking slay due to the powerful composition.
Personally I would've ranked Damnation in the top 4 though, that was the last album they did I even liked. It was a bit long-winded but they made very good use of the resources Sony momentarily afforded them. Got to see them on tour for it and that show was badass.
I use to be heavily obsessed with Cradle of Filth back in high school (2002-2006). They were one of the first bands that got me into the more extreme side of music. I saw them at Ozzfest 2003 when Damnation and a Day was out. I met the band which was pretty cool. I wasn’t the fondest of Damnation and a Day. Midian and Cruelty & The Beast are my favorites. The last album I fully listened to was Thornography and I remember that was when I fell off from them. Maybe it’s time I give them a listen.
I did find it weird Nymphetamine was an extremely popular song. I remember I wasn’t too fond of that album. Gilded Cunt was awesome though.

Godspeed is pretty bad but I'd put it just above Darkly. Darkly has no riffs.
Evil Flesh is not as good as Vempire but I almost wouldn't compare it to literally any of the other albums. It doesn't deserve a low rank but it shouldn't be high either. It's not the same Cradle.
Nymphetamine is still better than Hammer and Existence is Futile. The riffs are catchy and the new riffs are not. Those riffs sounded like love and these new ones sound like a rushed tour band
Hammer would be great if Dani didn't suckass and the symphonic stuff wasn't so corny as it has been since Thornography. Btw I'm glad you ranked Thornography so high. It's definitely undeserving of the feces that's congealing ontop of it by the fans

I can only agree with 4 things on this video: Manticore is their worst album to date imo (Siding with the Titans is a great song though), Damnation and a Day is really underrated, listen to Midian first if you're not into Cradle of Filth, Cruelty and the Beast is their best album imo despite the production flaws. Everyone's entitled to an opinion though, I use to hate Thornography but it grew on me after a while and Nymphetamine does have some genuinely good songs.

I agree with 1, 2, 3.
I've been a fan for a long time. Since Cruelty, really. The Dusk-Cruelty-Midian time period was probably the best for this band. I miss SJD on vocals too. The band would benefit from taking a few years between albums, I think. There's too many releases and it starts to feel like quantity over quality.
Godspeed is better than darkly x10000

Thornography is the worst. Manticore is underrated.

Worst song in catalog is Nymphetamine. Horrible! Basically a pop rock goth song. Thornography and Nymph are awful albums. Pathetic..again, pop rock.
