Interesting seeing an Amtrak train under the wire that isn't using it! Another spot I frequented in the 70s and 80s, but didn't always have a camera with me. Leaman Place is GREAT for railfanning-wish it was a bit closer! When I would ride Strasburg it seemed like they timed their trains deliberately to meet with the Amtraks flying by there! Almost all my vids have this happening (including 2008)! Also, nice zoom shot of the train under the US 30 bridge-I have many a vid of the original bridge!

Gotta love those GP38H-3s. I remember seeing #520 lead the Phase 1 Heritage unit into Albany on the Lake Shore!

Yeah, I did! As long as we're on the subject of Strasburg-Dolly bought a logo pattern from the gift shop there-in 1982! She embroidered it back then (or is it needlepoint?), then stuck it away-and recently came across it! Thought I'd give it a try...

@1Jennalover This one isnt really once you can ride. Its a museum on rails. You go in and tour. You get to go into all the cars except the first car. The Sleeper Car is for the Crew.

@1Jennalover Just a new scheme. The locomotive was retired and not in the best condition for the past 9 years. Now its been restored from the Beech Grove shops. I saw the same train in Lorton,VA

Awesome! I wonder why they won't let 406 lead...maybe it doesn't have ACS?

822 is capable in pushing the whole train if 406 is the leader

Does Amtrak cooperate with Strasburg any other way besides the use of the main line?

  • @woodalexander

Why couldn't the NPCU just lead with the P42 pushing? It would have made that whole move possible with one locomotive, not two (plus one apparently watching).

My guess is this was more of a onetime thing. Amtrak and Strasburg aren't connected (other than physically at Leaman Place). I'm sure, if there's another special occasion (such as Amtrak's 50th Anniversary in another 8 yrs) they'll do it again! But it would be more appropriate if they'd use one of their original F7s or F9s they "inherited" from lines they took over passenger service from! Assuming any still exist. I might have photos someplace...

why won't they let 406 lead? it has such a nice horn. Plus, they have to let a phase 5 locomotive lead, and the least they could do is put P42DC #145 on the other side instead of that ugly GP38 or whatever that ugly engine is.
