Hello. You are going to want to get some 9-10oz veg tan leather. If you are just starting out i would recommend tandy leathers oak leaf. If you dont mind spending a little bit more, i would order some Herman Oak from Springfield Leather company
I just bought a tooling set from hobby lobby, but the swivel knife doesn’t seem to make nearly as nice or as big of a grove as yours does - any tips? Do I need a better blade?
As far as the layout goes, i use photoshop. It keeps everything in line and centered. The other thing you can do is make tap offs and and place number and banners that way
@@AttackLineLeatherso how do you transfer it? before you start carving it looks like it is transfer to the leather. is that pencil transfer or carbon paper trace under the photoshop printout? i’m just getting started so i’m still trying to figure it all out. thanks
@@eross21 for this example i printed out the design on vellum paper, cased my leather(wet) and used a stylus to transfer onto the leather. If draw right onto leather i use an 8b pencil
Great work! Is there a certain pattern for the shield design? What I mean is the outside shape? One of my Nephews is due to graduate from the academy, and it would be cool to make him one once he knows the Fire station and engine company. Thanks I am guessing all my Skulls Spiders and that stuff I normally do won’t work for a fire helmet shield?
Hey Guys, I'm looking for a Boston Style Front Template and any other style I can get ahold of. Ive tried google but I cant find any that are the right size. If anyone has any especially a Boston Style I would appreciate it.
Incrediible leather workmanship...and a wholle lot of patience!!!
I'm more into this type of tooling. I couldn't get the hang of tooling flowers so I stopped. Then I came across this channel. Neat.👍
This is amazing. This is a true craftsman!
Love your work! I'm always happy to see a fellow Texan firefighter on UA-cam.
Thank you soo much.
You're a master with that wide blade. I couldn't cut those letters without a narrow blade!
Just got the notification and watching now. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely
Would love to know what bevel tools you used on this shield-looks great
Hello! I’d love to make one for my brother, but I don’t know where to get the plain leather and how to order it. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thank you for your reply! Do you have a list of tools I’d need for this project?
What stamp are you using for the outline ?
What’s the tool that you run around all your cuts to make them pop more?
I use the craftool pro medium beveler. There are a ton of bevelers out there, just gotta try em out and see what suits ya.
What did you use for the shading around the 21? Thanks for the video.
Hello and sorry for the late reply. I used a medium sized craftool pro beveler i purchased from Tandy Leather

It most likely just needs to be sharpened. I dont have a video up yet about sharpening swivel knives but there are plenty on youtube
@@AttackLineLeather great thanks!
Where do you find the shield shapes and designs
I make them myself or use other shields I've come across and change them up
what do you use for the initial design layout. is it just pencil?

@@AttackLineLeather oh perfect thanks
The purpose of the tape on the back?....Thanks
I apply tape to the back of projects to keep the leather from stretching as I tool. It also allows for a bit deeper stamp.
Sweet... its for a good cause!!!!👍

Email me attacklineleather@gmail.com
Depending on the department's policy for the shield you may be able to get some skulls on there lol
How do you put the design on the leather before tooling?
What tools are you using to create shade?
Bevelers from tandy leather
Just wandering if you trade patches? I work in Rockland county and I’m a medic just wondering if you would like to trade.
Id need to try and get my hands on some. My department doesn't hand them out often.
@@AttackLineLeather No Worries if you get one that’s great!!
@@AttackLineLeather but if you have a P.O. Box or mailing address I will send you one of mine.

What beveler were you using on the letters? I can't seem to find any that steep... Thank... Great work.
Its Hobby Lobby's small beveler. Its like $10. I love it
Barry king has an XX Steep beveler, they are around 30$ I think,
