I am remembering, when I was teacher in a prison, inmates gently run the tip of the tongue across a folded paper to cut off every inch of valuable paper. It works great. Outstanding video.
Steve.......I am in awe every time I watch you paint! I could kick myself for not being more serious about honing my talent when I was younger instead of waiting until I am 69! I forgot just how much I love to draw and paint! I guess "its better late then never" as they say! :}
Thank you, great to watch. AND after hearing you go on and on and on about M Graham paints, I bought some. I GET IT. I now understand WHY you go on and on about his paints. Thank you Steve. When are you and Marty getting together again?
As an alternative technique, after I fold the paper in both directions - using a burnishing tool to flatten the fold - I slightly "pup-tent" one end of the fold on the table then slowly work my way down the sheet with my hand always keeping the paper tented.
Lovely tutorial as always, thank you. I discovered if I wet the paper along the crease really well, it enables an easier and neater but still deckled tear.
Always very happy to see someone paint cotton, so much of it is grown here in West Texas. As far as I know, the brown part is just called the cotton shell. The tips are very sharp and painful if you try to pull the cotton out by hand. As far as the color yours look like it was grown here. (We have had very little rain. Rain really messes up the cotton and degrades the fiber) Thanks for the video, hope all is well with you and your family.
I seldom feel envious, but I am envious of the recipient of this painting. 🤫 This was a wonderful demo of both the painting and the framing. I hope your recipient enjoys having this in their home as much as I enjoyed watching you make it! 😊
I don't usually leave comments on anything but I just feel the need to say that you're a concise teacher and my paintings have become something I don't even recognize as something I've done! They look like some other awesome water-colorist has done them... entirely foreign; beyond my aspirations when I started painting... and I attribute that to how easy you are to understand and the simple practices you've inspired me to try. You're a magnificent painter and my perfect teacher. Love from Arizona
Thank you for the clip you shared on mixing blacks. Thank you for all that you share. I think I will view your tips on better glazing and layering...I think I get into problem issues with this. I tend to end up with a chalk like residue.....thank you again!
Terrific threefer, Steve: how to deckle paper; wonderful painting demo/technique; cool floating framing treatment! Loved it! Best to you and the family.
I have to say I may not be the best watercolour artist but I am pretty girl At good at breaking paper I never use any other method except this in breaking my 300 pound arches paper. They only differences, I fold mine many more times until it’s obviously going to crack with ease.
Sir I live here in the South and that is the best rendition of a Cotton Boll. Thank you for painting it and I love your music very relaxing have a blessed day
I like your approach of finding the frame first. I get too excited and start painting first. Then have a nightmare of a time finding the right frame. Kudos !
Steve, you might be interested to take a look at Billie Showell's Deckle ruler. Billie is a botanical artist in theUK. She has a shop on her website where you can buy the deckle ruler. It's unique, I think. I have one, and it comes in useful. Enjoyed your demo.
Love your videos. I am new to painting. Just picked up on that accent you have. And saw your April 1 video. SC!!! practically neighbors! Much love from Spartanburg!!
Boy, did this come at a great time for me. I have a shadowbox project that I am planning to do for my grandson, and I have never done one before! Now, thanks to you, I know how! Steve, you never fail. Also, I really needed the lesson on tearing paper. Thanks!
Thanks. And to be clear this is actually a shadow box frame. Floating is the spacing technique I used. It's a bit confusing. Floating frame can also refer to a glass-less frame where the edge is separated from the painting.
I love the softness of the cotton plant. The floating effect is so neat and a great idea on mounting or presenting watercolour pieces differently. Thanks for sharing!
Great project! Thanks for sharing. I live within a mile of a cotton farm. And actually the owners are good friends of mine. Now to get one finished like yours. I have the paper, the frame and the paint.
I love a deckle edge, but I’m too lazy to do it this way. Also my hands seem to be too oily and risk the paper surface if I touch it this much. I use a metal deckling ruler from the art shop. They come with different rough/refined edges so you can match them. The plastic versions suck, but the metal ones give a very convincing rustic edge! And it’s very quick. Loved your colour choices in this piece!
I’ve always found using a metal ruler up against the crease I’ve made helps me a lot bc I seem to end up getting a small area that wants tear off in wrong direction even when I try and hold it. But I love doing my paper this way and thank you for the painting this demonstration I love it and can’t wait to try it
I love this - simple and beautiful! Thanks for showing how you tore the edges and mounted the artwork. I do love shadow boxes anyway so I'm inspired me to attempt something similar.
Wow! That is beautiful, and I think i will practice this technique. It doesn"t seem all that daunting though its never as esay as it looks... Here I go! As always , thank you for teaching us.

Steve Mitchell; the man, the myth, the legend! Always a gentleman and a true artist!!
😄😍🙏
I love this one too. As a retired framer, I would add there should be space between the watercolor and the glass just in case of condensation.
Yes, good point and there is. About 1/8”. I should have mentioned that.
I thought your said farmer lol 😂
I believe they’re called bolls, Steve. Loved this! Thanks.
Steve you make it look so easy ….
I feel like that it looks even more fluffy and touchable because the piece is floating. Looks very soft and calming.
That was.exellect instructions love how you painted, and love the float.
You make me believe I can do this!
Wonderful demonstration! I need to frame some of my daughters work in a shadow box, so this gave me some good ideas. Thank you.

Very happy to have found your channel! You are a joy to watch :)
Beautiful. And thank you for showing the entire mounting process - always looking for additional ways to showcase my pieces.
Dude.. that was nicely done. I like the color pencil trick... nice
Absolutely love this! Thank you for sharing!😍
Lovely tutorial as always, thank you. I discovered if I wet the paper along the crease really well, it enables an easier and neater but still deckled tear.
Yes, and I mentioned that in the video. 😁
Very helpful! I always wondered about the floating presentation. Your demo of tearing the paper was also quite clear.
loved your idea and painting. Thanks for your show.
What an enjoyable video! Thank you 😊!
Beautiful😊. Everytime i learn something new from your video. Much appreciated
I like this a lot. Simple botanicals

Stephanie Burrow thanks hon! 🥰

Love your botanical illustrations so much!
Thank you very, very much for these great Videos - I've learned a lot!
Greetings from Munich/Germany
Lovely cotton balls! That is really inspiring. I wonder what I could make to frame in this way...
Love the edges that you achieved by using the masking fluid! I'll definitely try that!!! 🙂
Love the idea of masking the border. The painting is beautiful and the mounting in the shadow box is a great idea. Thank you.
Beautiful job!
Beautiful work as always Stephen ! Hope all is well
What a great project and framing idea! Love the cotton bolls, thanks.
So beautiful!
Outstanding! Thanks so much for sharing :)
Love the use of sepia, grayish navy and white. Such a beautiful piece
I can’t wait to try this. Thank very much for all the great content you provide.
Really elegant 👍
That is such a clever way to get the deckled edge! I love your spray spatter in the background for variation. Gorgeous painting.
Beautiful in every way! I can’t wait to try this!
This is fabulous! So professional but I think even a novice like me might be able to give it a go. Thanks so much.
Just beautiful

yes, I would have folded it a few more times, myself.
Great demo!

I love the cotton balls, and the floating frame business is really cool! I'm absolutely going to try it.
I like your approach of finding the frame first. I get too excited and start painting first. Then have a nightmare of a time finding the right frame. Kudos !
I always cut my watercolor paper into standard frame sizes and size my drawing appropriately so that I can always purchase off the shelf frames.

Diane Quinn I bought a deckle ruler from Amazon. It has a softer edge and a rougher one. Works great!
Beautiful!!
Love your work. Thank you for sharing.
Nice!
Have a great week end Steve! Thanks.
Thank you💛

I also love the letterpress branding on the paper
