Steve, fantastic job! The effect of adding the tree trunks was magical. Everything just came alive. I also think the color scheme was very pleasing. This is one of those paintings where you wish you could enter the scene and start exploring. Definitely makes me think of fall; my favorite season.
I love your videos! This one looks like someplace in Middle Earth (if you're a Hobbit fan). I have also noticed lately that you share a scripture reference at the end of each video, and I really appreciate that!
Outstanding, Steve! I could watch an entire channel of just these. You pack so much information and advice into them. It’s a rare mind that can be free enough to paint in abstract spontaneity, while at the same time giving detailed analysis. Watching the foreground, middle and background appear all of a sudden from random blobs is magical! Thanks, more please.
Months later and this is still my favorite painting you’ve done. The color story is just gorgeous. The layout looks much better than most of the paintings I plan out. It’s just perfect I think. I love it so much.
Wow! I saw this on Instagram and didn’t realize it was spontaneous. It looks like a well-planned painting. Beautiful work. I love the texture you got and the atmosphere. Great video? Steve!
Wow, wow, wow. Incredible how you pulled off this spontaneous landscape. I worried for a long time that it wasn’t going to work, but, you are amazing. It’s gorgeous and mystical. Thank you, Steve for posting your always fantastic tutorials.
I love those gray greens too. The violet plays well with those. Your painting looks like it's a rained (or it is about to rain) and there is a foggy mist moving in from the left. I wasn't sure what you could do with it at first and I am pleasantly surprised at how many tree trunks you painted in. It is a beautiful scene. So maybe, one day, you could show us how to make a rainy day landscape - how to show it's raining??? I wish that I could support your channel but I cannot.
Steve, this is absolutely beautiful! When I first looked at it I thought, what the dickens is he going to do with this?? I guess this is a lesson for those who are still learning to really look and see. Thanks so much for this. It's wonderful and a real lesson. Don't stop the Minders'! I love it!
That was a lot of fun seeing you pull that together. Risky approach but you pulled it off in spades. I’ve never tried watercolor board, before, but I’m going to have to pick some up next time I’m at Hobby Lobby. Good to see that it’s PH neutral, as well.
Thanks Brian. It does feel a bit risky sometimes. Its always exciting though. I got started doing these about 15 years ago because I was bored and didn't know what to paint and wanted to turn out something quick so I made a game out of it. Watercolor, at that point in time, then became a partner and less of a medium to control.
Steve Quiller likes Crescent Watercolor Boards. First person I heard talk about them. I like those and the Canson watercolor boards and Canson illustration board - especially when I’m using casein.
As you were putting in your washes and your water spray , letting it run and mingle , I got worried (for myself) I didn't see anything, but as soon as you put in your "sticks" it all became clear.....I have a LOT of practicing to do......devoted to do this type of painting when I start painting again......Thank you so much again!
Thank you for your youtube videos...I have learned more from them than from all the other watercolor resources I have bought (videos, books, courses)....
Thank you so much for this video. Just returning from a week long workshop on loose uncontrolled?? Watercolour... I struggled with this concept... instructor said that tight painting was ‘old’ and too controlled, and very outdated 😢 I came home that evening and immediately looked for you on UA-cam - and watched your video on “to paint loose or tight” - oh my my, that made me feel so much better about how I paint personally. You were the light in my dark day more than I could ever express!! As a ‘tight’ painter, I really wanted to try and loosen up some. I absolutely love this video, because it is very loose and spontaneous but still really beautiful. I will be trying this today. Thank you so much Steve. You are such an inspiration for me. HUGS
Sheesh! Its like a religion with some of these people. Sad. In fact, representational art and realism has been on the rise in the last few decades. Not outdated at all.
WOW 😳, I just watch you develop a painting in amazement. I'm going to practice on some less expensive paper in smaller sizes. Also will purchase some of this watercolor board. Thanks for the review and tutorial. It's also nice to know that a seasoned artist like yourself, buys art supplies in local places. At reasonable prices.😃oh and I've seen that Waffle flower swatch used by a watercolor artist I follow, Lindsay Werich, The Frugal Crafter.
Wow!! That is one amazing painting. Check eBay for arches paperboard I bought it there recently. They get a lot of jobbers selling run offs and store closings.
fyi If you place a magnet under a metal pallet you can draw out the pigment and leave the Iron (Fe) behind. Bloodstone Genuine gives a very soft and warm red.
That painting turned out so cool!!! I'm new to watercolor and have never tried that kind of approach so I was interested to see what you would do with it. Very cool!!
You make watercolour painting look so easy! Do you have something in mind when you paint the abstract? I have the hardest time visualizing a finished painting from an abstract. Thanks for the demo. Love your style!
Just that it will be a landscape and most likely have trees and underbrush. Nothing more than that. I wait to see what the watercolor washes present me with.
There is a little bit of white paper showing through on the right between the distant treeline and land ---from here it looks like housing and with a couple of horizontal lines could add roof lines; just how it looks from sitting in my chair. I've seen this before but checking it out again. Seeing something new each time. Cool! Really great spontaneous painting Steve.
It looked like an ink blot to me until the tree trunks were added. Than voila, a forest appeared! I love this. I will try doing one. I even have these paint colors, except for Neutral Tint. I'll use Paynes.
OMGOSH, this is gorgeous. I've been watching your channel for a couple few years now. In that time have seen how your color style and painting style has emerged. It's been an amazing journey.
Yes, I sell paintings. It usually takes a while to get them displayed and priced but I eventually do. If you want a price I can come up with one. I can also make it available for prints.
This is the first time I've watched one of your spontaneous paintings and my mind was moving in the same direction as yours. I was seeing the need for depth and the need to soften that stark white. I couldn't have imagined you'd make something from that mess at first, but it turned out great.
I have to try this. With a handful of commissioned paintings lately, painting has been very serious. I need a little play time right now! Thanks for the inspiration!
I've been drawing and painting for years and have loved details. After watching several of your spontaneous ones I have had a total change of heart. Being old now I'm thinking this is meant to be lol. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, art and humor.
I'm doing nothing else right now . Tomorrow I'm going to try to do this on watercolor postcards. I love ❤ this style. I'm almost 68 and tired of doing details. Hugs from Sweden 🇸🇪 🤗
I'm always amazed how you do your spontaneous paintings. I couldn't figure out how you were going to turn it into a landscape. But you did it. I'm going to have to try it myself someday.
Your spontaneous landscapes never seize to amaze me! I hope I find the courage to just throw some paint on a paper, and even get something sensible out of it :D Those grey-green'ish colors are beautiful!
Haven’t seen one of these in a while. You are so amazingly, incredibly, profoundly diversely talented it almost makes me sad but indeed it makes me happy each time I see the beauty out of chaos, the lovely order in detail. Your range is really special. A true gift. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! (Had to get musical). Have a great weekend. I’m headed back home Sunday. Great video!
This is absolutely gorgeous! It kind of makes me think of the Three Marker Challenge that was popular a couple of years ago, where artists gram three color markers and do a painting. You could do a similar thing, grabbing one yellow, one red and one blue and make the best out of it.
enjoy watching what you pull from these dabs and doodles.......like staring up at clouds and finding pictures, or paint peeling off the side of a house can leave a mural if you look hard enough.....thanks steve.........back to see the end results.
Fabulous like ALL the others. This one is like magic before my very eyes!!! Question: Was that the Silver black velvet #4 that you used for the branches?
You have SO much talent. It's beautiful. I unfortunately am not able to visualize the end product but I sure appreciate your abilities. Thanks for this lovely painting.
Love love love this painting, and you create with it effortlessly..Just waiting for my first m Graham set to be delivered! So excited. I love how brave you are and confidence with your paintings. I never try and make spontaneous pieces because of the price of the paper. Also I can’t just drive to a store and grab some because I live on small island. I actually just bought some affordable paper called fluid, seems great, but I wonder how it would compare to arches..
Hi Steve, Thanks for another great video - they are so helpful ! I have a question regarding taping off the edges of the paper to keep a nice clean edge I see you have listed both Frogtape and ScotchBlue in the description box - is there one you prefer over the other ? The tape I currently have doesn't work : / Thank you so much !
Love your videos Steve! A question on this one.....I bought the Crescent board but am wondering how you frame yours as it is very thick. Thanks for any advice.
Well I haven't actually framed any of it yet but I would mat it and frame it under glass just like paper. A knowledgeable framer might have advise about the frame itself. Shouldn't be a problem.
Oh my goodness, how I loved watching this! Warm greetings, Steve, and very nice to meet you on UA-cam here :-) I have done many spontaneous landscapes, and well as abstracts with various media, including watercolour, and I must agree with you in the affection for it ~ wonderful things happen, no doubt about it! Honestly though, I've yet to reach a masterful point of watercolour, so am truly grateful for the pro tips you are generously providing, thank you.
I loved the spontaneous approach.I am so inspired to get to the paper. With the weather outside being rainy and misty, I think I am going to try out some colour combinations of my own. I don't have the exact paints but I can definitely come up with something that feels neutral and monsoon like.
I just received my first m Graham’s.. and I have a limited pallet. I was wondering if I could premix the tubes so I don’t have to every time and also could I mix some with Daniel smith, if can mix at all..
Sure but with premixing tubes its very difficult to see how your mix is coming out. You’ll probably still end up mixing on the palette every time. Yes, you can mix different brands.
Thank you for the fabulous video Steve. Beautiful job. It was so insightful watching the painting come into being. How would you frame watercolor board? If it is a board, do you still use glass or plexiglass? Thank you so much for all the work you put into your videos. Mary at Hart Lane Studio
Love your videos & especially these spontaneous landscapes & whatever they turn out to be. I love seeing you demonstrate the techniques with this & I need to practice these techniques. One question I have is when you add the dark pigment for the tree trunks - Do you take the pigment directly from the paint well or do you mix thick pigment on the palette. Just wondering what you think works best. Thsnks
Steve, I really like these colors; Your videos are a beautiful way to start my day, and I have watched this one three times and am ready too try this palette with a spontaneous landscape. You make watercolor look so easy, and what you turn out is fantastic. Thank you again for sharing.
I love your spontaneous paintings. I have tried this technique and am pleased with how they turn out (most of the time). It is a good way to lose some of the "tightness" that happens when you and makes you see things differently. Thank you for your tutorials. Love your videos.❤❤❤❤
WOW! How you see this from your splotches is amazing! I love your videos and teaching. I wish I had someone like you teaching when I was a girl and struggling with it. Perhaps the message wouldn't have been "painting isn't your thing. Try another form of art." I can't tell you how much that killed, and stalled my painting trials!

This is really beautiful! I love the way the forest magically appeared!
This is my new favorite trio of colors. It's surprising how many hues you can get from this limited palette.
I love your videos! This one looks like someplace in Middle Earth (if you're a Hobbit fan). I have also noticed lately that you share a scripture reference at the end of each video, and I really appreciate that!
Gorgeous

If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I would not have believed that some random washes were transformed into a misty forest.
Thanks for the reply!
It’s like magic to see you turn your drips and drops into a landscape. Beautiful. Nancy from Damascus, Oregon
brilliant video... love how this all comes together....but damn... iwatched this video at 3am in the morning and now I have an urge to paint!
As a very new Watercolor Artist, I learn so much from your videos and see so much inspiration. So, Thank You for having such great insight to share!

I really enjoy the way you force the discovery of your spontaneous watercolor creations. This one is especially an amazing work. Nice job!
I was thinking this one wasn't going to be very good, but you turned it into beautiful. Thank you,, love it!

Beautiful job sir. I like drawing so your spontaneous paintings are very very interesting to try.
Thanks a lot. DOn Sylvester Houston, Texas
The white in the front looked like a stream!
Beautiful. It looks like a Scottish mountain view. The colours are very Scottish. Heather and pine and rusty gold.
Hobby Lobby has the 9x12 size of these boards on clearance for $8.99. Just thought I’d give everyone a heads up!
Wow!! That is one amazing painting.
Check eBay for arches paperboard I bought it there recently. They get a lot of jobbers selling run offs and store closings.
😮. Makes me think of Arthur Rackham's fairy tale illustrations. Fabulous.
This color scheme is just stunning. Such a beautiful painting, its so relaxing to watch you work your magic.
Steve. FYI - Having problems with patreon site. But will keep trying and will get back on your sponsor list.

wow really nice! :D okay I will try this but pretty confident my blobs will never look like a grove of trees... :/
This is so pretty and so creative. I really enjoyed watching it come to life. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Lovely painting, reminds me very much of Scotland.
Crazy how it all comes together...to only have your insight and imagination...
.
I have to say that was very impressive. A very useful tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
This is my favorite painting and the colors are so subtle creating a soft relaxing picture.
It looks like a rainy day up here in this part of north central PA in the forest. Love this, Steve!
Superbe! Magnifique...Quelle beauté ce paysage ! Merci beaucoup monsieur l artiste .
Just beautiful. Love the color combination. 👍🏼
Gorgeous! This has to be my favorite! Beautiful color combinations. Wonderful teacher as well. Thank you Steve!
I like your method, with this board. The result is really good
This is amazing. I can't get close to that with 100% effort lol
I've been drawing and painting for years and have loved details.
After watching several of your spontaneous ones I have had a total change of heart. Being old now I'm thinking this is meant to be lol. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, art and humor.

wow!.....doesn't take u long to bring it to life.........i have to do this too..
Wow ! All hail the blessed tree trunks. Nice job.
Your so talented. That was a great demonstration. See that you used your stamps.
It seems easy, but it isn’t. Wonderful painting as usual.
Spontaneously done & intentionally beautifully finished.
I'm always amazed how you do your spontaneous paintings. I couldn't figure out how you were going to turn it into a landscape. But you did it. I'm going to have to try it myself someday.

I'm repaining! Ur-rraaa!!! Very Gud! Sanky!
I did enjoy watching you painting this picture.

Richard Lumpkin Sing it! I loved that! I always read the comments because people teach me so much, even in the comments!

Wonderful! This really turned out great!
You should do more of these, they are amazing.
Very good text of the Bible. I liked it as much as painting
I agree!

Yes I think so. Check the video description. I should have listed it if it was.
You have SO much talent. It's beautiful. I unfortunately am not able to visualize the end product but I sure appreciate your abilities. Thanks for this lovely painting.
It takes time and practice. I wasn't able to do it right at the start either. Talent is maybe 10% of it. But thank you for the compliment.
Great idea, wonderfully executed. I love the colour combo. :-)
Its a personal choice. Fluid is a good cotton paper but not a favorite of mine. It tends to stain too easily. I've heard that many love it though,
Your light brown with spots of white at the bottom remind me of the clay hill across from my dad's home.
'Tag' -- Awesome painting BTW 😎
Hi Steve, Thanks for another great video - they are so helpful !
I have a question regarding taping off the edges of the paper to keep a nice clean edge
I see you have listed both Frogtape and ScotchBlue in the description box - is there one you prefer over the other ? The tape I currently have doesn't work : /

Not really, like them both.

fun to watch you paint with just the three colors. great way to keep track of the colors you used. thanks as always for sharing.

Yes, matted and under glass is my preference, just like paper.
Love the color story swatch board, i would photo copy a miniature (2x3) of the painting and paste it in the corner or on the back... Thank you!
Love your videos & especially these spontaneous landscapes & whatever they turn out to be. I love seeing you demonstrate the techniques with this & I need to practice these techniques. Excellent work Steve! I like these effects.

Absolutely amazing !!!!! 😍 😍
As usual my painting and imagination skills are put to shame. You and Peter Sheeler have alot to answer for!! :)
😆
I’ve been wondering about these. Thanks for your review!
Wow, that is really beautiful!!
😢
All I can say to you is......... AMAZING X
