I bought this show last week and just happened to run an unplanned 21km technical trail route. The trail had rocks and loose gravel everywhere. Mud and wet sections with some steep acents and decents. I was very surprised at how well the shoe did. Running on wet rocks was fine with plenty of grip. In the mud it got a bit slippery but I've never had a shoe that's good in mud. The shoe is super comfortable and snug so your feet dont slide around in them. It feels like you're wearing slippers when you slide them on your feet. I will see how durable these are over time but i really like these. I didnt want to get the heavier zegama 2. The pegasus are lighter and have great cushion to me.
Just got these on sale. They’ll be delivered on Friday and I can’t wait to try them out. I’m headed to Disney next year and need to find something soon haha.
Just ordered mine for winter in the goretex version. Put 500km on the trail 4 goretex last winter. I'm looking foreward to the new midsole. Thanks for the review, it helped me decide.
The sizing is consistent and they both weight the exact same, 10.2oz for a size us9. The Pegasus Trail 5 is a much better shoe though: www.trailandkale.com/shoe-reviews/nike-pegasus-trail-5-review/
Thank you. Still haven’t made up my mind why someone would grab these rather than wait for the Pegasus 41? Most of my runs are on roads and I love my Peg 39’s and they disappear amazingly with any run. So Trail 5 or wait another month+ for the 41?
The trail version is very different to the non-trail. It has a different midsole and much better outsole traction for those who want to take them on the trails
@timtannahill9 very interesting you brought that up because I was thinking how similar these two trail shoes are whilst running in the Peg Trail 5. I’d go for the Pegs because they’re more stable. The Cloudsurfer trail is a more plush however. So I guess in answer to your question, light trails with no technical stuff, the cloudsurfer trail could be your shoe if you like a lot of cushioning and control is not as important. Here’s my review of that shoe in case you haven’t watched it yet: ua-cam.com/video/-lx3tKBt4Xw/v-deo.htmlsi=PKwAb_Y8WqSkhmPJ
So there’s like a hump in the midfoot that I’m not used to. I’m flat footed and concerned about that, plus I’ve read that others had a problem with hotspots in that area. Did you have any trouble?
Great question! For the most part they feel very similar on the roads… the peg trail 5 feels a little flatter under the forefoot though as there’s no zoom X unit under there like the Peg 41 has BUT the peg trail 5 feels softer (more cushioned) elsewhere (under the midfoot and heel) due to the higher stack height in that area. Peg trail 5 has much better traction should you hit wet roads, or dirt roads. I’ll publish a community post on our channel in a minute just for you..
Hey Alastair. Great video. Would you recommend these or the pegasus 41 as a daily trainer? I do mostly city running, but am looking for a durable shoe that I can also take on some easy trails for a walk/hike. I had a pair of peg 39's that lasted me 700km and the outsole held up great. Do you think durability will be an issue on pavement running with the trail 5?
Thank you! The thing is, the peg trail 5 is much better at doing both road and trail while the peg 41 is much better tailored to just road. So the peg 41 outsole traction is nowhere near as good on trails as the peg trail 5. So it depends on the type of trails you intend to use them on. The new ATC rubber on the peg trail 5 is so good, and it’s very durable but if you do most of your runs on the road in them then the rubber lugs will run down quicker than if you were to run them on the trails.
But if you got 700k out the peg 39 I see no reason why you won’t get at least 500k out the peg trail 5 using the way you plan to! 👍🏼 hope that helps making your decision a bit easier.
Thank you! For more technical, go for the Zegama 2 (my latest video review). It has Vibram Megagrip like the Nike Ultrafly but is cheaper and better in my opinion. The Kiger 9 is good but the outsole hasn’t seen the same upgrades as the Zegama 2 or Peg Trail 5 yet, and still uses an old compound.
As soon as your said the toe box was snug I was out. I gave you a like though. I loved the Pegasus shoes I had in 2009/2010. Ever since then the shoes have become incredibly tighter and more uncomfortable. I’ll stick to Brooks 😔
Hi! I love your reviews, thanks a lot for that! I was wondering, what are your favorite "road to trail" shoes? Like the kind of shoe you can bring on holidays to hike, trail run, run on roads, and wear in the city :)
I think I’m going to have to say the Peg Trail 5 right now! It’s the one I’d certainly choose. I’m actually working on a roundup of my favorite road to trail hybrid shoes this week which will drop on www.trailandkale.com in a few days :)
Ive been looking at this shoe as i really cant justify multiple pairs of running shoes and this seems a good all rounder. I run a 70/30 split road and trail. Recently I've started doing a lot more running, probably 30 miles per week. I've been thinking about getting some shoes fitted professionally, looking into my running style but then the temptation is there to just jump in and buy these Nike Pegs as the price is good and they look great.
Ah I was just checking as they’ve started doing trail running races now too. For an OCR shoe you’ll need something that drains well and has awesome grip in the wet for the obstacles (vibram megagrip). I’d recommend something like the Merrell MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx. Reviewed on the channel too - alternatively a lightweight all mountain trail shoe - my favorites right now are: www.trailandkale.com/roundups/best-trail-running-shoes-buyers-guide/ -A
I cant deside between the pegasus trail 5 and the zegama trail 2. Im going on hiking vacation in the alps this summer and only want to bring 1 pair of sneakers/ trailrunning shoes. And ofcourse my boots for bad weather.. help me😅
Well the zegama 2 will give better performance on the trails and in the wet too due to the Vibram megagrip outsole. But the peg trail 5 is a great shoe for general weather walking around town (like Chamonix for example), and it’s also good on the trails. Personally if I could take only one to the alps I’d choose the Zegama 2 over the peg trail 5
It’s a pity, I have the trail 2 gortex (blue and orange) and it has been unbelievably amazing to run in on Table Mountain and adjacent Lions Head. The shoe not only felt good, it looked pretty slick aesthetically. Then came the 3 and 4 and from an aesthetics perspective, it went from bad to worse in my opinion. I like the look of the 5 but concerned that it will hold up in the mountains where the runs are very technical. Also I feel that my trail 2 provides amazing support on technical terrain but performs equally well when hitting the road surface. Also I’m wondering if the change in lugs that was introduced with the 3 (I think) is indeed better than the lugs on the 2? Coz I’m happy with my grip on the 2
The grip on the peg trail 5 is better than any previous version thanks to the new compound mentioned in the review. It handles moderate trails very well and even some technical stuff especially considering it’s a hybrid shoe. If you need a trail shoe for really technical trails, I can help you find the right shoes for that.
I just bought the 5 after owning the 4 and heel slips pretty bad in the 5. Thinking the shoe heel and sleeve are just not as gripping on 5. Any thoughts or solves?
Good review! I'm just wondering how is the grip on those in wet surfaces like wood and rocks (not very technical rock gardens but plain straight rocks). Also on wet roads or sidewalks... Are they good enought? Something like PumaGrip ?
Thank you! I haven’t tested them on slick wet rock yet as the weather has been dry but I’ll share when I do. They’re already much better than the rubber compound used before so I’m hopeful they do well on wet rocks and roots too

I wish Nike didn’t get rid of the colored and splattered midsole from the Peg Trail 3. The newer models with the white midsole show dirt and wear so easily.
How does the 10mm drop of the Peg Trails compare with lower drop trail shoes like the Hoka Speedboats that are 4mm? I’ve only ever run trail in Hokas (SG5 & Mafate 4) and I’m curious how that 10mm drop would feel on the uphill especially.
Normally I’d say I hate higher drops on trail shoes (I’m a fan of the Speedgoats too and love that 4/5mmm drop they tend to go for). The new Peg Trail 5 however didn’t annoy me like the previous version did… which is odd but a good thing!
That high drop is insane to me especially for a trail shoe. Most trail shoes don't have a drop bigger then 5mm and Nike is like fuck it, we'll double it. I can't image this is great for doing downhill, I don't need to be pushed forward even more by the shoe on the downhills.
lol yeah, it could be so much better on trail with a lower drop, but it’s a hybrid shoe so they’re catering to those who want a shoe to do road and trail, and most of those people are likely already familiar with a higher drop - like in the Pegasus road for example. It works for the Pegasus Trail line due to its crossover nature. Also, it doesn’t feel like a 9.5mm drop at all, feels lower (which is a good thing).
@@trailandkale Runrepeat tested and measured the Pagasus Trail 4 and measured a 12.7mm drop! So this 9.5mm could actually be even higher. No thanks. At least it feels lower.....
@Kaisersozze It’s probably less than 9.5mm if anything, hence it feeling less in my tests. Also, that repeatRun site is the biggest bag of crap (they used to steal ours and other hard working reviewers content, all the time and then use our review results to rate shoes back in the day). Now their strategy is to cut a shoe in half, prod it, and give it a score based on nothing other than a few lab experiments. They don’t even run test the shoes, and still call it a review. 🤦🏼♂️ Unfortunately that doesn’t give runners the best insights into how well a shoe actually performs in the environment it was intended to be used in.
@Kaisersozze no, it’s less than cool, and it’s sad that this can be allowed to happen. They’re doing it again now, but with new nefarious content farm tactics, using Ai and outsourcing, plus other tools I’m sure, to explode their visibility on Google, near wiping out authentic review blogs like ours and other real runner creators that we respect. I’m never one to complain like this, but I think it’s important to speak up sometimes so that others are aware of what’s going on in the ‘review landscape’ at the moment.
TL:DR trail and road = Yes Hiking = no Sand = no way José I thought I would get away with hiking in the with lack of stability being a problem I would accept but have found the upper tears pretty easy if sticks get near it, first day I got a 3cm tear, sand also gets in shockingly easy through the upper and fills the tox box and gets gritty and hurts your toes so if you do venture on beaches or sandhills during your runs this can be pretty bad.
Wow you must have been very unlucky tearing these… also, when it comes to sand - that gets into most shoes, through the upper mesh and the opening around the collars. You should get some gaiters if you do lots of sand hiking and want to keep sand out of your shoes.
@@trailandkale I've got a couple tears now but its just where those holes in the upper are above the toe, the shoes are close to worn out now though so it's perfectly acceptable I think, I may even end up replacing them with another pair.

@@trailandkale Hmm yeah if that's the case with them then that's not cool.
TL:DR trail and road = Yes Hiking = no Sand = no way José
I thought I would get away with hiking in the with lack of stability being a problem I would accept but have found the upper tears pretty easy if sticks get near it, first day I got a 3cm tear, sand also gets in shockingly easy through the upper and fills the tox box and gets gritty and hurts your toes so if you do venture on beaches or sandhills during your runs this can be pretty bad.
@@trailandkale I'm going to watch your zegama2 review now actually, I like to try different stuff, feels boring to buy the same things twice
I just got myself a second pair last week :) love them for daily wear
I think Nike trail shoes look best for daily use but aren’t the best trail running shoes 😅
These are great as a transition shoe, and the Zegama 2 has major improvements over the original 👌🏼
Makes you miss the trail 4 aesthetics.
I prefer the new style
I swear Nike keeps making their shoes narrower and narrower for some reason. I don't get it.
I have noticed this too! Next year may be the year I have to size up 😛
Same. I have a hard time thinking it’s just my feet getting wider lol.
lol 😄
i don’t buy a lot of shoes. My last pair was peg 38, i find the peg trail 5 quite loose overall and toe super wide actually 😅
@tonytan8833 do you size up a half size in general?
appreciate it
You’re welcome
I ran a 60k in the Pegasus trail 4 Gore Tex 😂 coz it was very wet
And how did that go? 😄
How was the 60k in the wet?
I hate white outsoles! Why on Earth every shoe maker puts white outsoles and foams on all their shoes??!
I guess they must be popular? The Peg Trail 5 is available in a couple of darker mid and outsoles too
@@trailandkale I got the same pair! It's like the made them for my feet, best fit I ever had from a Nike!! Thanks for the review, you're spot on, on everything you said for them!!!
Thanks so much appreciate it ✌🏼
lgta hy galat trail 5 ki video pr a gya mein
It's probably the right one... at least the most informative ;)
