    @TimGrose Thanks for the review! I wonder how breathable the GTX is for everyday use and running? Also how good or bad is it for road running & wet surfaces? How does this model compare to the non GTX version since the construction is slightly different. I know it’s personal preference, though if you can only choose one which would be the best option? I guess it really depends on the use case. 👟

      I tend to reach for GORE-TEX shoes in conditions where am more worried about keeping my feet dry as long as possible which tend to be less "warm" days and now in the UK we won't be seeing too many of them until well into each year. That said when I reviewed these it was still somewhat warmer and did not have any particular breathability concerns. Although this is really a trail shoe, I have found it also performs well enough on the road and in wet weather I find I am always being a bit more careful in any shoe than on dry days. This one gives me confidence to give through puddles much more so than in non GORE-TEX shoes. If your case use is just (or at least mainly) roads and often wet ones, then also worth considering the Pegasus 41 GORE-TEX which has a Storm Tread outsole which found grips well on the road but has more of a "smooth" surface than the lugged pattern on the trail one. I think this Trail one is better as a road-trail hybrid and is a bit lighter than the Peg 41. I don't have the non GORE-TEX trail one but have do the regular Peg 41 as well but in Volt so great for summer dry days - less so now! In the UK at least I tend to mostly use road shoes in the summer if I think any off road bits will be fairly dry. In the winter here I would reach for a GORE-TEX every time as then I feel I can anywhere with much more confidence.

    My peg trail 4 gtx is becoming my trail shoe of all time: 1. It has a cushion very few trail shoe has, and a superb upper. 2. It is actually responsive and good for tempo and treshold on gravel and trail. 3. The upper dries faster than any trail shoe ever.

Often it was my most watched video in a day especially in the "gaps" between new videos. Mind you, the average watch times do get shorter and shorter the more "popular" a video gets. I don't both with GTX version of running shoes anymore. here in Taipei, when it's wet...it's also very humid...so your feet are going to get wet no matter what (from outside moisture or sweat)...so I prioritize drainage above all also, GTX uppers don't do that well. I'm a big fan of Matryx upper material for drainage though.I have found memories of the Peg 36 GTX, Peg Trail 1 & 2, skipped the 3 and had the 4 but found it too tight along the knuckles of the foot (it actually caused some bunions for me). I also never liked the Peg Trail as a road to trail shoe, I think there are some better options out there for that.
    My wife, however, loves the Peg Trail GTX for hiking...and she has the all white Peg Trial GTX 4...so I think this one will be in her future this fall.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah I can see that an environment where it is always hot rather than the odd nice day (like when I filmed this) we get in the UK then a GORE-TEX shoe may have less appeal. I also think it comes down to use case. Most of my "daily" runs would be say for an hour and I like GTX shoes to hopefully keep me largely dry for most of it and also give me the freedom to go on routes that might otherwise give me "soggy feet" after the first puddle in non GTX shoes. I also have used previous versions of this shoe for road runs in heavy rain and has worked well there. Eventually your legs and socks get soaked but feel the GORE-TEX keeps most out. Think they are also great for walking in "all conditions" especially when you can pick a line to hopefully avoid the deepest watery sections. So far this one feels the best road to trail of the 5 versions so far. The 4th one was markedly better than the previous three (which were more obvious pure trail shoes) and I think the React X has helped in that regard.

    Bought the 5 and returned it for another pair of the 4. I found the 5 to have to much heel slip , didnt feel it locked my foot as well as the 4 and felt it was a tad more narrow. Also found the react x foam not to be as nice as the 4's. I do like the esthetic of the 5's but i feel it was a miss in fit.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Місяць тому

      Ah interesting. I have rather narrow feet so pretty much impossible for me to get heel slip in any shoe as have to pull in the laces quite a lot. I ended up cutting the laces on my v4 pair as too much slack. Probably could do again with the v5 but at least can double knot them easily. I will have to wear my v4 again to remind me of the relative softness. I have done about 50 miles now in the v5 and certainly can’t describe them as overly soft and now perhaps the React X in these doesn’t feel quite the same as the regular Peg 41 but the more rugged trail outsole always firms them up anyway. That all said are doing a job of keeping my feet largely dry especially now after a load of rain in the UK.

    • @mickyward3716
      @mickyward3716 Місяць тому +1

      @TimGrose it may be due to the heel cup being slightly shorter in the 5's and them changing out the material. I did appreciate the thicker tounge in the 5s, but they took the same material and moved it to the heel cup, which I found a tad slippery and the bumper didn't grip my heel the same when I did a side by side comparison. I'm glad the 5s are holding out the water. I think that's the only downfall of the 4s.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Місяць тому +1

      @@mickyward3716 I think I prefer the taller gaiter in the v4. The v5 one I find I have to sort of stretch out each time I put on the shoe. I think at the end of the day if you like a particular shoe makes total sense to get it again. Whatever the differences are between the v4 and v5 it all seems quite subtle to me. Mostly, as you imply, I wear these GORE-TEX shoes on runs where I want to go off road (or very very wet road runs) and can feel confident in largely not getting drenched feet after the first puddle. I think a lot of the "problem" with GORE-TEX shoes is that you get the top of your socks wet then water will seep in that way although to me never seems as bad as in conventional uppers.

I was struck with this Trail 5 GORE-TEX that it had more "in built" arch support and, as such, felt I was engaging the ReactX to the rear "closer" which sort of felt like it was softer anyway. That all said don't think there is much in it and having used the Trail 5 a bit more now I think the more rugged outsole sort of cancels out the apparent slightly softer feel anyway. I did a rather wet and muddy hour mainly off road run in them yesterday and my feet were largely dry save for a combination of a bit of sweat on my socks and a little dampness when my socks got a few splashes. Certainly way way better than would have been in standard shoes. Obviously white shoes are going to get very dirty very quickly if use these for their intended purpose of "trail" running in wet conditions so it largely depends how much effort you want to do cleaning them each time afterwards. I think it will be difficult to keep them as white as in my video here as then had been dry and warm. That said I tend to like my running shoes to not look brand new every time I use them and certainly the GORE-TEX here throughout makes it a lot easier just to wash the worst of the mud & grime. In hindsight black shoes might have been better but they did not have any on sale when I got these and the v3 and v4 I got of these were both black so a change seemed a good idea.

I haven't had any running shoes from this brand, always been a Nikie fan, but I needed new shoes for my half-marathon and daily training, preferably something durable, and shoes like vaporfly are like, designed specifically for marathon racing, and my speed does not require such a premium model. I have Pegasus 36-39 and Zoomfly 3, but the recent nike training shoes are not too attractive to me. Still would like to buy a trail v4 or v5 for the winter, just waiting to see if they introduce more color for v5.
      It rains here today and I ran 10k in Boston 12, since it's very wet on the road I ran in a rather easy pace, but I still finished with ~ 5:00/km speed, whereas I estimate in my worn out old shoes it would be 5:30-40/km. The continental rubber sole feels quite steady on wet ground. I liked the natural push it produces when I accelerate, at the same time it's not so aggressive like carbon plate shoes.
