How good can this defense really be? Loved hearing Brandon's take about how close they were to #1 (by some metrics) in 2023.

Coach Bill Busch explained it pretty well that even if you statistically are #1, it doesn't mean you're the best because of schedules etc. Some of the top teams also blow out opponents and sit their starters for a half. The best metric will always be how you fare against elite offenses. Shut down Ohio State and we'll talk

@@commonfanGBR As it stands even outside of stats the elite defenses look like Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State again. Buckeyes have a chance to be one of the best defenses in college history they are #1 SP+ going into the year, have 9 projected defensive draft picks next year and at least 25 future NFL defensive players on the roster. For comparison Georgia 2021 had 8 players off that great defense drafted. Miami 2001 had 21 future NFL defensive players.

The QB's and Offenses on our schedule did more for Defensive upgrades in performance last season.
I believe Bill Busch could have produced the same results.
Remember 4 insanely mediocre offenses beat us on last minute scoring drives.
Like when it counted the most, late in the season, the NU Defense came up short. 😐

They made a leap, but certainly some of it was related to playing some pretty bad offenses. This season will be telling to see if they can take it to that next level.
I think both things can be true: they were demonstrably better in 2023, but also they played some really bad teams in 2023. But there was definitely improvement that we haven't seen in recent years. With all the guys coming back and year 2 in the system, I'm hoping for big things in 2024.
