    The original is better because it's a charming movie filled with emotions. Without those emotions, the movie would feel emotionless like this live action remake.

    It was pretty decent, in my opinion. The weakest link was the girl. The way she talks is near lifeless, like a ghost, and almost all she says is "Science, Science, Science", and it can get annoying.

    • @ronvins
      @ronvins 5 років тому +11

      I agree. The young girl was very hard to get warmed up to, at least for me. She just didn't emote and it did get irritating with the science thing. I also was bothered by some of her dialogue, some of it just didn't feel like a normal girl her age would say. It felt very forced. Other than that, I really, really enjoyed this film. I've already seen it twice and plan on seeing it a third time. I personally like it more than the cartoon, which I was never really a fan of as a kid.

    The biggest mistake this remake made was having Dumbo learn to fly VERY early on.
    The whole story of the original was about Dumbo understanding what he was, learning about his ability to fly with his ears and earn the respect/admiration of others through said abilities.
    To take that important plot element and expose it very early on is...is just lazy

    As a remake, it's meh. As it's own thing, it's TERRIBLE!
    This is easily up there as one of the worst live action Disney remakes next to Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast. It especially hurts me because Dumbo is one of my personal favorite Disney films ever. The movie would had been meh and forgettable at best, but it's the kids themselves that made it UNBEARABLE to sit through because, like you mentioned, I HATE how they state the obvious so many god damn times in this film down to the point that it's Peppa Pig levels of awful. I give Peppa Pig credit that it's at least made for a much younger audience. This film does not have any excuse at all. Not only that, but the boy is pointless and the girl is Emma Watson annoyingly bland. I don't wanna bash the kid actors, I'm sure they are alright people, I mainly blame Burton for giving them that direction. I also have many issues with the film, but I'll be here all day.
    All I'm hoping for now is that Aladdin and Lion King are better viewing experiences.

    I'm honestly not interested in seeing this live-action remake of Dumbo. I'm just getting really tired of Disney remaking their animation classics into live-action because it shows that they really want to cash in on peoples love and nostalgia for the original classic instead of making more original content apart from their animated films, and it really pushes that stupid mentality that animation is nothing more than colorful junk meant to distract little children, and I hate that way of thinking so much because it's just a dumb stereotype that really needs to freaking die.
    It's why I'm also not interested in seeing the live-action remakes for Aladdin and The Lion King. Besides, there's better movies coming out this month that I want to go see. I saw Shazam! today and it was awesome. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. But yeah, I'm just gonna skip Dumbo and wait on Missing Link and Avengers: Endgame to come out.

    • @Zistheone2
      @Zistheone2 5 років тому +3

      While I agree with you, there are some people who do like seeing animated movies turned into live action films (not because they think animation’s for kids, but because they love seeing how special effects can bring cartoons to life). It’s part of the reason why I’m excited for Detective Pikachu since the pokémon look like their designs from the games with textures to make them look like living creatures.
      One of the biggest problems with the Disney reboots has to be writing & directing like Animat pointed out. A good example of Disney’s reboots would have to be The Jungle Book. It’s not as good as the animated film, but it’s a well written movie that works as its own independent thing while paying homage to the cartoon & the original book by Rudyard Kipling.

    • @peytonmichael9898
      @peytonmichael9898 5 років тому +4

      @@Zistheone2 I know what you mean and you do raise a good point. It's just that I'm tired of people treating animation like its kids stuff. But I agree with you on The Jungle Book remake. That movie to me is the best live-action remake Disney has done to date.

    • @itfigurescomics6704
      @itfigurescomics6704 5 років тому

      I share your distrust with 2019, but I’ve seen it myself, and it’s really good, different, and smart. Consider the following;
      1)Disney isn’t all about pushing the mentality that “Cartoons are meant for Kids”-far from it. Kids of the newer generations nowadays would never be impressed with the old Disney Animated Films so much because of how cartoony they are. Disney most likely bought off Star Wars and MCU because they look realistic-and that impresses the kids a lot. If you took kids nowadays to see “Jurassic Park” and “Land Before Time”, and then ask them which is their favorite of the two; They’ll probably go with JP because of how real It looked. It’s the combination of technology and life-like visuals that sell the Nostalgia for kids
      2) Lion King isn’t gonna be Live Action-it’s gonna be completely CGI from what I’ve heard. Even if live-Action elements were out in there, the worse that would happen is that it becomes a “Hybrid-Movie”
      3) The Live-Action DCU isn’t all that great (Even if it impresses the kids via life-like effects). MCU is better than DCU when it comes to Live-Action-Films-whereas DC does Animated Films better than Marvel. Heck, “Wonder Woman” is the best the DCU can do (so far) so I hope you’re right about “Shazam”. The DCU could use an immature hero to brighten the mood 😂

  • @sapphirewriter8349
    @sapphirewriter8349 5 років тому +9

    I'm gonna have to be honest with you, I think people just slammed this movie out of nostalgia and it's kinda weird because Dumbo wasn't loved all that much by people. It's only until that it got a remake that people go "Oh Dumbo was such a great movie! A classic original!" Yeah where was that love before this movie? The only thing people seemed to like about the "original" Dumbo was the pink elephant scene and the lullaby maybe, but that was it!
    That's why I have a hard time taking these kind of reviews seriously because I think it's more so a bias outlook, especially since it seems to be more of a trend to hate the remakes. Which is kinda funny Animatt since you were kinda thinking the same as me when it came to the reboot of She-Ra. You wondered why people were hating it.
    I don't hate the remakes. I don't love them all. Beauty and the Beast remake was a mix bag but I agree, the main characters were crap in that movie. But I love the remake of Jungle Book because I hated the original movie and I think the remake fixed all the problems I had with the movie, such as Mowgli taking responsibility for his actions instead of whining "I wanna stay in the jungle!" I love the Lion King to death but I see the upcoming remake as another adaptation, like that of the broadway musicals. I see it as another telling of the same story which funny enough, that's what Disney always does. Disney has always done retellings. Name one original big smash 2D animated film that wasn't based on a fairy tale or a book. If Disney can do retellings of books, I don't see the harm or even that much difference when doing the live action remakes. It just people have a different opinion.

    You know how Dumbo is similar to the Transformers sequels? Both feature title character(s) that are massively overshadowed by unnecessary characters and overused troupes. It all makes sense why Ehren Kruger was hired to write this. Keaton was actually bad trying to imitate Johnny Depp. Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito were great. This isn’t even much of a Tim Burton film, it’s more of a Disney movie than a Burton type since that creep and weird factor is cleaned out. Burton couldn’t do much to save it from the script or the acting (especially the bad kid actors).

      The main crow (Jim crow) was voiced by a white person and the name Jim Crow is a very obvious reference to the Jim Crow laws. It was really progressive for the time though. I think the more under talked racism of dumbo is the song of the roustabouts, it depicts faceless African American men building tents while they sing how they work till they’re nearly dead for little pay and they “throw their pay away” and it even goes as far to say they’re happy. I’m sure when it was made it wasn’t intended to be racist as dumbo was progressive for the time, but there’s definitely a lot of undertones that haven’t aged well

    I think it was decent, it’s good in the some parts but bad in some parts. They didn’t have Dumbo talk or any of the animals talk, no characters got developed, the things in the movie got me confused on what time period it’s in and there’s no chemistry. Plus, there’s some mood killers when there was emotional scene. The movie doesn’t have a central character so no characters get any development and it’s chock full of horrible jokes with bad timing. The cuteness is only limited in the first part but it got old real quick. I lost interest this in this movie, it also has 0 storyline focus and it feels like two different stories just forced to be crammed together.

    There's a common acronym used among animators called "K.I.S.S." It stands for "keep it simple stupid." That more you try and put into something, the more cluttered it gets and you forget to focus on what is most important. That's what makes Dumbo such a beloved film, it's simple but effective. It did so much with very little. It would seem Disney forgot that lesson when making this remake that I guarantee people will fuss about while it's in theaters, but when it's raked its money, people won't really talk about it again and divert their attention back to the original animated film.

    So i'm gonna ask this just once: does anyone really have nostalgic memories of the animated Dumbo film? Cause really when i hear people bring up this movie I always hear the animated movie get praised for the pink elephants scene and the lullaby, nothing else.
    With this movie being compared to the live action counterpart it makes me think a lot of the hate the movie has outside of its problems is just mainly due to nostalgia for the original. I will agree that the animated version is better, but come on.
    At least with this adaptation it's trying to be more original and not a carbon copy of the original like how Beauty and the Beast was. Look I will agree the live action version is inferior to the original, but this is one time where i think the hate for it is unwarranted. I mean does this movie have problems: oh yes it is does. But they don't ruin the movie. The one real flaw i agree with 100% is the fact that the child actors in this movie are really bad. The acting sounds like something I'd hear in a bad M. Night Shyamalan movie.
    But other than it looks decent in my opinion. I know that some of these movies have been made to cash in on the nostalgia of the original, but imo this is one instance where i can see effort was made to make something different from it's original version.

    The boy I can give a pass, but the girl is something I really didn't care about. All she wanted to be is a scientist instead of being a performer, but it's hard to embrace that when the girl showed less to be likable other than to be supportive of Dumbo, and yes we can agree she has less emotion than the last actor.
    But what I can depict from that, At least Emma Watson did better. even without emotion I still enjoyed what she has given, so at least she's more likable than the girl here.

Despite the fact that the film is nearly 80 years old, and has a much lower budget than the previous films, it is an iconic element in cinema to say: "Something that is so simple and innocent, can also be something unbelievably great." But the 2019 version puts millions of chliches, boring characters, no connection to the original and AWFUL acting of the kids.
