- I had so much fun making these gorgeous epoxy filled laser cut earrings with the one and only Mindy G! She's been a great mentor and friend so I'm so thrilled to have her help today. We hope these "nuggets" of maker wisdom will help you find success in your own creative journey!
NOTE Epoxy can be toxic or cause adverse reactions, please do it in a open space or well ventilated area. You can also use gloves and a mask as extra precautions.

1/8” wood of your choice. Mindy likes the GlowForge proofgrade wood because it is finished and masked! shop.glowforge...
Great video. We use resin all the time and sometimes need to have it set fast. Buy an infrared bulb and put them under (about 6" above) and the resin will set in about 5 hours
Love this tutorial! I have not made anything yet, but, educating myself before I jump in. It is wonderful to have each step explained in detail. Definately the best I have seen for beginners.
Very informative. Thanks. when did you apply the masking? Please give some info.
Really enjoyed this session. I have made multiple videos on my UA-cam channel about multi-color epoxy pours, where we end up with a picture - usually a logo when done. these are larger and not so delicate. Lately I have been experimenting more with delicate pieces, nothing as delicate as an earring and this was very helpful to me and gives me several things to incorporate and think about - really glad I found this video. Good work.
So, I tried this. I’m pretty experienced with resin work, so I thought I’d be able to knock them out easy. I made a few... mistakes.
1) I didn’t have transparency film. Brilliant me thought I’d use the back of packing tape. Didn’t work.
2) I sprayed my surface with adhesive instead of my earrings. Yeah, don’t do that.
3) I mixed my glitter into my epoxy, which made it too thick to really work the way I wanted to.
But that’s all part of trial and error. Lesson learned: Pay attention! They give you great tips! Don’t skip steps.
lolol. So even with a level of over explanation more suited to a classroom of 6 year olds you still messed it up? Amazing.
This was an awesome video. Thanks to both of you, i am not afraid to try resin anymore.
Many thanks for this. Really useful to my wife and I. We are having problems with the resin seeping into the wood and discolouring it before the resin sets. We've tried sealing the wood with various sealants/varnishes but still it seeps through. Clearly we're not using the best wood for these and probably need to be using woods with tighter grains maybe? Would you mind sharing what the best woods are for this technique to prevent the resin seeping please?
Love this video!
You ladies have opened up a whole new world for my laser designs.😍
Can you please explain more about the masking? I bought lazercut earrings to make and I am very unclear on the masking. Are you putting somthing on? Or is that already on it, meant to be pealed up?
Great video. I missed a couple of things and had to re-watch it. Awesome work!
I would like to see how you masked both sides, so that the epoxy areas are left open?. Just one other question about the epoxy you used, do you need to wear a protective mask/respirator? The rest of the video was great by the way.
How much fun are those earrings. I love them, you have given me so many new ideas, thank you for sharing.
Just when I thought the video couldn't get any better, the dogs showed up 💓
I work with resin have you tried using uv resin ?
Thanks for the tutorial. It was fantastic.
I tried it with acrylic, too, and found out some things through trial and error.
Are there any tricks and tips either of you would recommend when using acrylic instead of wood?
I love this video! I have been engraving cutting boards and i want to inlay epoxy in them. should i be using the same method and product you are using?
Here's a tip. Get a shop vac and hang the hose nearby using a bungee so you can quickly clean all the little loose pieces when finished cutting.
Still debating on getting a glowforge because I don't like the fact that it has to be connected to the internet to work so what happens if they go out of business in the future? Anyway I'm also doing allot of traveling for 3 months at a time and I don't thing the GF is intended to be portable.
Love your videos! You give us encouragement that we can do this! I would love to see a video on pricing products. I am very new (just got my laser) and I'm trying to set up my products for retail. I'm wondering where you sell, how you cost your products, and any other great advice you have for your peeps!
Great video! I didn't see y'all wearing PPE, is the epoxy from Hobby Lobby safe to do that?
I'm a guy but I'll be trying this thanks for sharing
Great video ladies! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
My laser comes today. I can't wait to try some diys :)
Yay how exciting!
Wondering if you need to seal the wood with anything before adding the resin? I tried this with water on a map using maple and the epoxy kind of spread into the wood near it
That’s a good point! We used GlowForge Proofgrade material so it was already sealed.
Very cool! Thanks for showing us how to make these!
please let me know the GlowForge proofgrade wood link please, Thanks for the video
Hi there. Love this clip. Just a bit confused at the end . Taking off the film I get but what is the other taken off by the dental tool?
When you etch and cut, you should use wood or acrylic that has a masking layer. You can make do with painters tape to mask your own wood in a pinch, but working with pre-masked materials makes sure that it’s super clean and evenly masked.
Another option to purchasing pre-masked wood is to apply liquid masking fluid with a small paint brush. After it dries, it protects the same way & it's easy to remove with a small rubber cement eraser. There are also videos & tutorials available on its use.
What kind and size thickness was the wood? Neww to laser.
Does the spray glue leave residue? I’m having an issuer wth sticky residue being left behind
This was so interesting! Thank you so much for this tutorial.
i dont wear earrings but this was a cute video so i might try it on my laser :) thank you :)
I recently found your channel and I am so glad I did. The earring tutorial is great. Thank you for sharing.
Teresa Butler yay! I’m so glad it’s helpful!
Where do you buy the wood??
Where did you start your sales?
Thank you! Really enjoyed the video. Great step by step instructions.
Thank you!
Love it!! I work a LOT with epoxy and I definitely going to try that with the earrings I have done already!
Samara Diaz yay! Please share when you do!
@@ThatMomWithALaser will do! I have been so busy with cups I haven't been able to play with my laser.
Awesome video. I tried this out today and my epoxy ooozed out from underneath 😞I had a mess lol and had to throw them out
Cocktail sticks are good for small pieces
Love them! Something new to try! So pretty!
TOOOOO FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm VERY familiar with Epoxy and WILL be making some =)
Thanks for the video and tips. Can you explain how to do the one made of acrylic?
Great!!!! I need to finally try this!
Are the boards solid or ply??
I'm so in love!
I followed this to a tee..I think..lol Came out good except where the tape didnt stick and the acrylic leaked through..I sanded them down and they look better but how do i get them to shine on the backside that was against the acetate..? They are dull not like the top side that was poured..I want to try and sell these so I need them to be perfect..What should I do to polish the acrylic? Thanks!
so cool ! thanks ! Mindy, you've got to make vids ! you rocks !
What type of resin are you using.
Just watched this, saw your mica powder… went to Amazon got it on lightning deal 🥰🥰🥰
Which type of wood do you buy from glowforge to make the wood earrings?
Nice video on the process. How do you get the finished product released from the acitate?
Thank you! You just pull it off :)
@@ThatMomWithALaser I must be doing something wrong. I can't get the acetate off the back. I left the masking on both front and back. I spayed with repositioning spray glue. Maybe wrong spray.
Such a fun video! Y'all are awesome. Can't wait to play with mica and epoxy!
Thank you for this awesome video!
How do you do metallic
Where did you get your earring holders and stand?
Could you please put Mandy’s UA-cam channel if she has one as well as her Etsy shop thank you
JC PRODUCTIONS she doesn’t have either! Mindy just works locally and doesn’t do tutorials. Maybe in the future!
what kind of masking dose Mindy use on her wood
How many output watts is your lassr?
can you be more specific about the acetate you use? I went to Office Depot and all they had was PET. I got some unnamed laminating pouches...epoxy stuck to it. I've ordered some acetate cake collar material, I assume it will work, but I really don't want to mess with "rolls". Thanks!!
This is a great newbie project! Love them!
please please please use protective gloves and respirators when dealing with resin, even if not straight away you can build a sensitivity if continuously exposed to resin. It may say toxic free but thats not accounting for the chemical and thermal reaction when mixed.
Thank you, Alucard. I've learned much from this video and a ton of my viewers have shared the same important information. Thank you!
How did she get the colors on the acrylic earrings?
I recently found your channel, I loved this video, does Mindy have a UA-cam channel also? If she does, could you let us know? I love what you do, but the laser you use, seems so difficult to use, how long did it take you to figure it all out?
What was the thickness in mm of the board that you laser cut?
where can i buy the earring blanks with the tape on?
Whats that tool called that you used to remove the masking. "The dental tool"
Its just a pick, you could use a signwriters weeding tool or even an engineer's scriber.
What thickness and type is the wood she's using? 1/4? Thanks for the video!
this is awesome 😀
omg I just can not wait to try this THANK YOU
what do i do if i don't have the glowforge masking on the wood to start with?? Like if i'm using plain unmasked wood to cut
Would a hypodermic needle work?
Thank u for this video I have a question at the end was that adhesive that u peeled off do I spray both side before I start ? thank u in advance 😊 is the masking something different I have to purchase
If it's not proof grade wood that already sealed then yes.
Beautiful
Thank you! Can't wait to see yours!
what if you don't use a mask when you laser cut?
Love, Love, Love! I wanted to see the difference between pigment and alcohol. You forgot to show it.
Jenn Goldstein ahhhh you know the weirdest thing happened when I went to edit the video that one clip totaolly disappeared! I was so upset! Glad you caught it ;) Join my group on Fb and tag me so I can get you pictures!
what does a pair of earrings like these go for ?
I cut out earings and removed the tape on the side that got cut..can i still use them?
I would think so. Only one way to find out! 😉
Make sure yall have ventilation, its a growing awareness that working with epoxy is making people sick. Might want to emphasize safety because of irresponsible people theses days!
Just came across this video. Can you tell me what tool she used to dry the epoxy? Thanks.
I believe she used a heat gun.
I bought epoxy at my local Michaels craft store . Ready to use but wanted to ask where is best and safe to use this with the odor?
Definitely make sure you use proper PPE and are in a well ventilated area.
Does Mindy have a channel or a website for sales?
Yes! Look up Made By Mindy G on Instagram!
Just tried this last week and it worked...mostly. My resin got absorbed into the wood (MDF). What did I do wrong? Please help!! (It was not overfilled; just the unsightly seepage into the wood eventhough it was masked)
The wood needs to be sealed first
@@LadyAmbitiouz Thanks! I must've missed that part in the video :(
@@amyfho no I read it in another comment. The material she used was proofgrade, meaning it was prefinished/sealed. That's what keeps the wood from absorbing the resin
I’m clapping so hard/loud!! Thank you so much for this videos👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Love your work !!
Thank you!
ive watched this a couple times now, how am I missing the part on how you got the masking tape on earing? lol someone help me out here please and thank you
the masking comes on it from glowforge
Just an FYI..I Did not use proofgrade so I had to tape both sides. Make sure your tape is on good and doesnt come up. Mine did in places and when i removed the acetate, Epoxy had leaked underneath.. So they didnt look good at all..I ended up sanding them all down to remove the excess acetate. Now they look much better but I will end up having to polish them. I guess only way to avoid it is getting proofgrade. I have a tough time getting masking tape to stick on wood. I should have used blue painters tape. I used the last of my big 12" roll and i guess it didnt stick to well and most of my earings need repair..Otherwise I followed this exactly..down to the same toothpicks used!..lol
I’d love to see photos! Can you show me? Maybe on Fb or Instagram? I’ve been thinking of doing an updated tutorial and maybe will try non-proofgrade material. Thank you for sharing and for the feedback! I will show Mindy your comments and get back to you ☺️
@@ThatMomWithALaser sorry for my ignorance but what do you mean by proof grade, and what type of tape do you use please?
I just got a laser cutter…can’t wait to try this. My question is, I saw you put the acetate square on the back, but what is the masking you peeled off of the front? Was it something that came on the wood that you used and was that from Glow forge? Thank you!
Material that comes from glowforge has masking on both sides of whatever you are using. Once she peeled off the acetate there is still a layer of masking to peel off. Also material from glowforge comes pre finished. Hope that helps
You can buy masking tape and put it on the wood if it doesn't already come with the masking tape applied. I do both sides so I don't have to put in so much work cleaning up the char.
Was the masking already on the wood or did you add that before adding the epoxy?
We used GlowForge proofgrade wood which already comes masked. :)
@@ThatMomWithALaser what kind of wood was she using?
Leticia Martinez proof grade walnut from GlowForge 😃
@@ThatMomWithALaser thank you!
@@ThatMomWithALaser Where can you buy these wood earrings where they have the masking on them?
I bought lazer cut wood earrings from Amazon and then searched for a tutorial and found yours, but mine don't have the masking, so what do I do to address this missing element? I'll seal them to avoid bleeding, but the masking is not on mine. You don't link to where they can be purchased, so either a link or a workaround would be super helpful! Thank you :)
Any tips on the best way to remove the Locktite spray from the sides? Acetone didn’t work great for me and sanding just spread it around and made out more noticeable. Other than this issue I love this method!
Amelia how did it get on the sides? The way Mindy does it directly in the acetate sheet kept it only to one side of the earring and when we pulled it off there was no residue.
That Mom with a Laser I don’t mean the front or the back. I mean the sides as in the part that is cut, the brown outer edge.
Amelia how are you getting loctite on the edges?
That Mom with a Laser It lands there when I spray. I’m going to try spraying it on something else and then just touching the earring to that instead of spraying the earring.
Amelia I have to rewatch it now but I though Mindy only sprayed the acetate sheet and then stuck the earring on top. She doesn’t spray the actual earring.
Love!!!!
Please share them with me if you end up making them!
@@ThatMomWithALaser I sure will Just finished my first project today! These are coming next!
Clearly you guys live in Florida, I am assuming south or central Florida because of the coffee. I live in New Smyrna Beach, Florida
Please increase volume. Thanks. Try shotgun mic. Great video! Thanks
Can you use a syringe to apply ?
It's worth a try!
Heat guns also blow.
Great project but please remember to wear the respirator with decent filters and a face shield... Epoxy is a silent poison.
SO DOSE MINDY HAVE A UA-cam CHANNEL
Please be safe with epoxy. I wear a ventilator mask and have an exhaust system and I also wear gloves.
Thanks for the tutorial. What do the earrings sell for?
Brenda Lung hmm
Good question! 😆 I’ll ask Mindy tomorrow and get back to you!
$12
She never showed the alcohol ink! Is that in another video?
Watching the whole video in portrait mode instead of landscape was a bit annoying but what a cool product idea.
Lol I understand. This is one of my earlier videos when I was only uploading to IGTV. I hope to redo it one day.
@@ThatMomWithALaser I see most of your videos are landscape. I love your ideas and your content, you earned a subscription from me!
your great
Where is your PPE? not even gloves? Nice tutorial but I wish you were taking better care of your health
You're right, Bonnie. This was my first time working with epoxy and I plan on making an updated tutorial demonstrating proper PPE. Fortunately we were in an open garage and working carefully with the small amounts we were using. An updated tutorial is on my to-do list for 2021! Thank you for your concern and care.
