  • Looking through an old hard drive of miscellaneous footage, I found what was the entirety of me making a custom wedding name sign for my cousin Emily and her now-husband Alex, way back in September of 2017, and decided it would make a great video. These are my favorite types of projects so you'll definitely see a lot more like this in the future!

    This looks amazing. I don’t have a laser cutter and have been using a router. This would take me a year to do by hand and it would look roughhhh. I love the staining/aging technique and have seen it done before. The brillow pad sanding really helped lighten it up some. I’ll look around to see if you have listed your laser cutter somewhere in descriptions or on reddit, but I assume it was pretty pricey for a simple hobbyist.

      Hey Joseph, thanks for the kind words! I actually don't have my own laser cutter, yet at least - I may look into getting one at some point. I use the laser at my local maker space where I have a membership. It's a great way to dip your toes in the world of laser cutting if you can find access to one like at a library or such.

      @@Floppy379 Hey there! I was careful to not apply too much glue so that there wasn't too much squeeze-out. There was a tiny amount in the end, but because it was so little, it contracted as it dried and wasn't super visible in the final sign. Hope that helps!

    I really like the look of this sign, at first it looked really big but then I seen it wasn’t that big when you took it off the laser. Can I ask how tall and wide the sign is? I’d really like to try and make one. I’ll have to get a little creative because I know my little laser won’t cut real thick material so I’m thinking of cutting it out with my Shapeoko router and then last the lines in and cutting out the lettering.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @FarbulousCreations
      @FarbulousCreations  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there, glad you like the video and sign! Without digging up the design file, I believe it ended up somewhere around 18-20" wide by 6-8" tall. So pretty petite, as I didn't want to assume Alex & Emily had wall-space for a larger sign! :) Good luck on your signage journey!

    How much charring was on the sides? Recently I had a piece of 3/4" (ish) rough pine in my 80W laser for testing an engraving. Once it was done I decided to have a go at cutting round it. At 90% power 5mm/s (as slow as mine will go) it very nearly went all the way through. A second pass just about did it, although since I had focussed on the surface it charred the living poop out of the edges.

    • @FarbulousCreations
      @FarbulousCreations  3 роки тому

      I don't believe it was too bad of charring - about normal if i recall. I don't think I mention it in the video, but I do always rub as much char off the sides of something like this as possible with a paper towel, then usually use a fine grit sand paper to lightly get a bit more off - not so much as to show the raw wood, but at least enough that it's no longer leaving stains on your hands from handling it.
      I definitely know what you mean about "charring the living poop" out of an edge though. 😂 I've tried doing powerful but slow passes on a thicker piece of hardwood like maple or walnut and the edge ends up all scraggly and not at all flat.

    • @FarbulousCreations
      @FarbulousCreations  3 роки тому

      Awesome! Good luck with your test! I wish I could give "mm/sec" speeds in my video, but the laser cutter I use at the maker space uses percentages 1-100%. I'm looking at getting my own laser cutter at some point and the one I'm looking at uses mm/sec for speed so I hopefully can give more accurate settings in future videos. :)

    That’s brilliant stuff and excellent video,
    There is a guy in the UK who cut through 10mm ply the experts said can’t be done and he done it with a Chinese laser cutter so he proved the so called experts wrong, he’s a really interesting and intelligent guy check him out he’s got over 150 videos ( rd laser cutter workshop) or try ( think lasers) he’s even been approached be laser manufacturers to test their laser cutters he also made a prototype lightweight Head and now he has allowed his cheap co2 cutter to cut more than 4-5 time faster than the manufacturer had it working at . He’s a retired engineer who worked with lasers he is now selling his lightweight universal head I can’t remember the price though .
