Lightning To The Nations 2020, available now at: smarturl.it/DH...
When Diamond Head first released Lightning To The Nations 40 years ago in 1980, few could have predicted the importance it would carry with regards to heavy metal’s new wave and sound. Stacked and packed with riffs, Lightning To The Nations would be one of the prime catalysts for a movement known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM).
Re-imagined, re-recorded and re-born in 2020, Diamond Head’s forthcoming 40-year celebration of their genre-defining debut album is a scintillating shot of fresh metal energy. With Lightning To The Nations 2020 listeners experience not only the rare phenomenon of crisp, fresh and new sounding songs with very little of the obvious original elements altered, they will also be treated to four supreme cover versions… And in prime position stands Metallica’s ‘No Remorse’.
Recorded over several sessions between various locations, from France to band members’ home studios, Lightning To The Nations 2020 central hub was Andersen’s Raw Sound Studios in London. It’s where Brian and Abbz did the guitars in February and March of this year, and then with the COVID-19 chaos striking, Andersen worked on the album between April and July, with Tatler’s watchful ear inspecting final mixes and tweaks in early August before sending off to mastering at Metropolis Studios in London.
This edition of the album sees Diamond Head spreading their wings and creating the heaviest of homages also to Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and Deep Purple. Lightning To The Nations 2020 (November 27th 2020, Silver Lining Music). Available in multiple formats, special D2C bundles, including a limited edition autographed ‘No Remorse’ poster: smarturl.it/DH...

Diamond Head are an English heavy metal band formed in 1976 in Stourbridge, England. The band is recognised as one of the leading members of the new wave of British heavy metal movement and is acknowledged by thrash metal bands such as Metallica and Megadeth as an important early influence.
Diamond Head are: Brian Tatler (guitars), Rasmus Bom Andersen (vocals), Karl Wilcox (drums), Dean Ashton (bass), Abbz (guitars).
This man may have singlehandedly invented thrash metal. He deserves more recognition
I looked up a tutorial and found metallicas name claiming the song fucking disappointed
@@nightguy8555 James Hetfield said in a concert in 2013 that he song was from diamond head, wtf are you talking abt
They've always praised diamond head. Back in like 1982 in interviews they are asked what their favourite band is and they say diamond head
And in their garage albums, they only play covers of songs they like, and they play like 4 diamondhead songs on there. They never said they wrote it
@@net-yz7mx not metallica claiming the song but people claiming it as a metallica song sorry didnt word it right lmao
I love the fact that they're uploading things all the time, stories, new music, music videos, q&a and now guitar lessons! They understand how to engage with their fans and how to make new ones
I knew their songs because of Metallica, but the new re-recorded version of Lightning to the Nations has got me hooked on Diamond Head
So true 😃

@@ramonwills598 musicians have to make money somehow in this day and age
@@grathapilot of course.
Glad he confirmed that Metallica covered this, for those who persist that Diamond Head copied it...Great lesson Brian!
Who says DH copied it? Obviously they made it before Metallica
@@ashpollock9907 You would be surprised how many people think it's a Metallica original.
I’ve met people that think the whole garage days albums was Metallica originals lol.
@@centaurus5676 😮
@@LethalDentCompany Me too LOL!
Love how the basic riffs and song structure was explained expertly, and then the solo hit like "just do this"
Diamond Head are a band that deserved so much more success than they got. So many magnificent songs. I first discovered them 35 years ago, ironically through the Metallica cover of Am I Evil. Makes me so happy that they’re still going, and we’re still talking about their epic music. 😎🤘
Same here.
Hey man. I was 14 during August 1987 when Garage Days came out. I had my cassette of Metallica. This good gentleman is inviting us into his creation. \m/....\m/. Yes, I did read the liner notes on my cassette.
I think they did pretty well. This is one of the best metal songs ever written. Metallica pay their royalties every time they play this song. What more can you ask for...
This blokes vibrato is like a violin. Absolute legend.
How can it be, that this softly spoken and humble man, can create this magic over and over again?
Cuz he is a down to earth gent from stourbridge
It's called the Angst of Youth
Will never understand how diamond head never went on to be one of the biggest metal bands ever. The white album was probably the greatest debut album ever. Blew me away when it came out. Luckily mine was signed by Mr Tatler. Still listening to it 40 years later. Pure class 🤘🇬🇧
Is Like Anvil, They made very good albums but they never got that recognition because of the labels
@@DyatlovMann great comparison my metal friend. Both bands should have been massive. The anvil documentary brought a tear to my eye. Respect my friend. 🤘
@@Slayer-xc1ug thanks man, Take care🙏🔥
One of the meanest riffs....ever! 🤘😈

ITS THE LORD OF ALL RIFFS!!!!!🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥💀👹👹
@@wizarddemon yes it is
The best riff Tony Iommi never wrote.
Because I’m dumb and forget things:

0:44 intro lead line
1:11 scale walk up

1:52 harmonic transition into main riff
2:11 main riff
3:50 transition into the “fast section”
4:06 fast section or galloping riff
4:45 galloping verse riff (low e string)
5:38 solo
7:11 legato riff
8:02 G5 - E5

You're the GOAT
I love the smile on his face when he starts playing "the riff". Ive been a rocker all my life but had never heard this song until a few months ago on "Ozzy's Boneyard" at Sirius Xm.
No disrespect sir, but the heck have you been all these years😁
@@TheBroTee No kidding! but now I know!!
Wtf? Really? Better late than never, i guess. Amazing track, isn't it?
@@miguelg4006 I feel embarrassed and enlightened at the same time! But the good news is I've told both my sons about Diamond Head and they love it! My oldest who's a very good guitar player knows the "riff" now. Now they won't spend decades not knowing! And yes Its an amazing track!
So cool that he can play the solo spot on to this day.
Uh, you think it could have something to do with playing it every show for the past 40 years?
@@haywoodyoudome uh perhaps. My point is many solos on many songs are improvised when played live.
To the 25 people who didn't like this video. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you rethink your vote, that'll be the end of it.
This lesson is a national treasure for all us players who were inspired by your music. Thank you, Brian. 🤟
For as long as Brian is still in the band, Diamond Head is still Diamond Head no matter who else is in the band. The man is a damn legend.
I learned that song when I was 17, back in the late 80's. And I always thought that the verse riff in B was tricky as well - I feel better now that I know that Brian thinks so too. Nice V, brother! 🤘
One of the best HM songs of all time. Brian Tatler is a true riff master.
Who else wants another guitar lesson? 🙋♂️☠️🤘🎸
Legend. This music will be discussed 100 years from now with the same passion.
While I was waiting for my wife to come out of work once Brian Tatler got out of his car and walked past. I thought, it's Brian Tatler!!! He was visiting someone on the street. Looked like he was carrying a birthday present. So nosey I am haha!
I started playing this song in a band in the 80s. It was a blast. Most people would never have heard of Diamond Head if it weren't for Metallica. I admit, I'm one of them.
One of the Heaviest riff
Then I would really like you to listen demiurge by meshuggah
@@vaibhavvasishth4637 im assuming you didnt undstand my comment, I said ONE of the heaviest riffs as in it one of the heaviest riffs ever made. and as for meshuggah they are okay, they is way heavier music than meshuggah.
@@dindjarin8457 ik there's wayyyy heavier music than meshuggah like extermination dimemberment and I'm sorry that I didn't understand your comment😁
@@dindjarin8457 lol don't listen to him, I bet os mom and dad are cousins.
Am I the only one thinking Brian is not only a gentleman but also a very underrated guitarist? Glad seeing you with a V again :)
Such a humble, reserved man. I've had the privilege to see Tatler twice with the most recent, excellent lineup, and I just totally fucking love the new recordings of old songs with the latest band. I've had the chance to meet the man, and tell Brian how much I love what he does.. His vocalist is top notch.. HIS BAND IS TOP NOTCH, AND NEEDS AS MUCH GOOD PROMOTION AS POSSIBLE!
How does one write a song like this? This is just mind blowing.
The riffs, the solo, the lyrics. Everything just blends so well. True masterpiece.
Damn!! How to really really play Am I Evil, second part with solo lesson step by step will be epic!!!
Throw on the record. He showed you all of the important parts. You will learn it better this way.
@@wrayven Have you ever seen the videos where the real artist shows the right way to play something and they let you know that the Professional Transcribers got some of it wrong (Thin Lizzy's Scott Gorham's UA-cam Lesson for "Boys are Back in Town" comes to mind)?
Well, I am NOT a professional transcriber, so I would love to have a follow up lesson by Brian himself teaching that great solo! I certainly wouldn't think the World or I would be better off without it.
P.S. I'm not saying that your comment doesn't have plenty of merit. I'm just saying that I love UA-cam Instructional videos and I learn visually as much as (if not more so) than I learn by ear. Plus, I'm still just a drummer who branched into guitar 27 years ago (and I still suck).
He's a Rock God and a gentleman, a metal legend ☠️☠️☠️🤟🤟🤟
Its great to see Diamond Head getting some over due credit and a spot light on their huge body of work
Yay, a guitar lesson from legend himself! Thank you Diamond Head!
One of the great heavy metal songs, especially that wicked solo
My first gig... Glasgow Apollo, Oct 1982. Diamond Head with Tank as the support band. Unforgetable!
It was supposed to be Twisted Sister opening that night but their UK abel went bust...
I finally realized just how many sweet riffs are packed into this one song \m/
It’s always easier when the person who actually made the music explains how to play a certain song of theirs. Before I found this, it took me 4 days to learn the main riff. After finding this video, it only took about 2 hours to learn every riff except the solo
This man is a Bloody goddamn legend
Brian thank you for this fantactic lesson! Finnaly i got the idea how to play last tricky hammers-on riff!
Only a tuition video, but as soon as that riff hit my head started banging! An all time classic number.
Can't play guitar but still sat through the whole video transfixed! I've loved this song from the first time I heard it back in the mists of time and it always give me goosebumps!
Hopefully, one day, I can get to stand in front of you and see it in the flesh!
Take it easy, dude!
🍻🤘💜
One of the greatest guitar solos these ears have ever heard. And Brian is an anazing guitarist.
Never realized diamond head riffs were this fun to play
I love the solo part in Am I Evil. The entire rythm section marries so well with the tapping and the rest. Just love the melodies together so much
This is stupendous. Getting taught songs so explicitly by the actual band members.
Im so grateful I live in a time I can just pull out my phone and learn a song straight from the virtuose who wrote it himself
Used to play this with the band I was in. We were all 17-18 jr sr high school and we would go to my buddies house up the street. His room up stairs had his drum set and our guitars and amps. We didn’t have great gear but we rocked out the school talent shows. This was circa 2001-2003. Great times thanks for the great song and memories.
I just love the joy in Brian's face as he shows us just how MUCH he achieved, and still can achieve! Inspiring and beautiful.
The solo was played with such a finesse.... Amazing!
Diamond Head did a acoustic gig in my small home town many years ago still one of my favourite gigs.
Dear Brian yes, I did enjoy that thank you. I can still scratch my head and wonder why at the height of the NWOBHM in the 80's. Diamond head, Saxon, Witchfynde and Girlschool didn't become hugely successful like Iron maiden and Def Leppard did. IMHO you were far better than them and deserved much more recognition than you got. I remember listening to the Friday rock show with Tommy Vance. He really tried to push you and usually played at least one of your songs weekly.
You truly deserved to become really successful. My all time favourite track of yours 'sweet an innocent' warmest wishes to you
I cannot express my gratitude to Diamond Head enough for making my life much better with their music. I never get tired of listening to them!
that solo bit was so badass I cant really explain how much so. I was just not expecting you to jump in there with the track in such a bad ass manor. Metallica is lucky to have a covered you guys!
Watch this one blow reet up ! Can't wait to come back to this in about 6 months just to see the amount of hits it has collected . Seriously a free lesson by the man himself . Is it evil 😈 yes it F@#kin is🤘🤘🤘
Yes it will happen as so many play it wrong!
Great guitar player and great guy. Met him once at hard rock hell. No ego whatsoever. 😉👍
Thanks for this authentic lesson and for advancing Metal back in 1980!!!!!
I saw DiamondHead support Thin Lizzy when I was 18, and DiamondHead were the better band. Brian was on fire
This man is a RIFF LEGEND!! I am so grateful to be alive in the time of Brian Tatler! Thank you Brian for ever picking up a guitar and making some of the most massive riffs out there! Keep rocking! 🔥🤘🏼😝🤘🏼🔥
Great Metal Tune inspired by Holst!!!!
so sick, I love when the actual guitar player shows you how to play their song.
Still got the chops 👍
Still got it Bri !!
One of my Favorite Riffs
Deadly...Absolutely Deadly!
Such a cool band 🤘
One of the first songs I learned to play - and played it in all my high school bands as a teen!! :)
That is so damn cool and I'm here playing enter sandman 😂
Old but gold!!!🤘
Got into Metallica in early 1987, 7th grade. A friend let me borrow the Elektra re-release of 'Kill 'Em All' in the fall of 1988, I think it came out in anticipation of 'Justice'. I loved all the tunes on it, especially 'Four Horsemen'.
As the year went on, I gravitated more and more towards 'Am I Evil?'. At some point, it became this weird pattern of listening to 'Four Horsemen', flipping the tape, fast forwarding through 'Metal Militia', listening to 'Am I Evil?', flipping the tape, fast forwarding through 'Hit the Lights', and starting all over again.
In the summer of 1989 we flew to England, the entire trip I listened to almost exclusively 'Am I Evil?', play + rewind, play + rewind, etc. I focused on the fast half of the song, especially the solo. It was a rush listing to the solo as the plane landed and took off.
About a year later, I figured out that this was actually a cover, not a Metallica original. Because of the success of 'Justice' (I think), some older NWOBHM stuff was getting new traction, and an older Diamond Head compilation 'Behold the Beginning' made its way on to the shelves of our little record shop in 1989, complete with liner notes from Mr. Ulrich. I recognised the band's name from the 'Kill 'Em All' liner notes, and was please to discover other great tunes Metallica had covered, 'Helpless' and 'The Prince'.
Anyway, Diamond Head's first album is amazing, and I'm shocked to not see it on more 'best metal albums of all time' lists, it was *clearly* a huge influence.
Very pleased to see this video.
First time I heard this song, I had bought the lp at a used record store when I was 15..1983..listened to this song 20 times in a row on 11...(mom was not home) still love it to this day. Tony Iommi has nightmares he didn't come up with this ...and Tony Rocks.
What a time to be alive!
Brian Tatler is in my Top 10 for biggest influences on my guitar playing. His riffs are just beyond killer. He's an amazing rhythm player. Also I really hope they do a 40th anniversary re-issue of Borrowed Time and some playthroughs of songs from that album on this channel. I loved that album
2:11 - THE RIFF!!! What an amazing tune. Can't wait for the next album 🤟
Fun Fact: Brian and Phil Cope of Witchfinder General had the same guitar teacher.
Finally, we get a lesson from the original. As someone learning the art of guitar these are invaluable. Can't wait for a lesson for Lightning to the Nations! 🤘
Вот они гитаристы старой школы. Отличная игра, великолепно поставленая речь. Все чётко и по делу.
More pls.
Helpless for sure or Sucking my love. Great riffs in those two!
Thnx Mr. Tatler for sharing your arts.
Brian Tatler , a guitar great. A bit intrigued why between 1984 and 1994 he aged in looks about 30 years.
He was having a good time 🥴
Guys, I can't tell you how much I like this... Thanks ! Love Diamond Head 🤟
That was an awesome video loved watching that. I bought the white covered album known as Lightning to the Nations back in the 70,s when you could only buy it out of the NME or sounds can't remember which now, and signed by Sean Harris. Brilliant album for their debut followed them ever since and the NWOBHM
what an iconic tutorial to have access to - brillian!!!!! right from teh source of metal!!! thank you Brian
Such a brutal riff and great solo section, the foundation for a lot of other metal bands!
This was one of my absolute favourite tunes to play back when I used to play guitar in the late 90s and early noughties.
Great stuff. Thanks Brian and @diamond head official for this. Hopefully more in the pipeline!!!
I love me some DIAMONDHEAD!!!!! Man light years of playing that tune Mr. Tatler you must be able to crush rocks with your bare mits!!!!
Absolutely love Brian Tatler the guy is the world's most underrated guitarist of all time he is a true student of the instrument and composed the most amazingly heaviest riffs that were well before their time the solo in Am I Evil is a true classic right up there with anything done by Clapton,Page,Iommi but it's true awesomeness lies in the emotion it's played with its not 1000 miles per hour fast shred shred shred it has depth and character and not only fits in the song nicely it adds to the song and really rounds it out as a whole, thoroughly enjoyed watching him play it in this clip you can see the immense pleasure it gives him when he plays it still to this day and the tonal qualities of the guitars on the 2020 version are wicked insane the man really knows how to dial in the tones he's after its super heavy with a ton of bite yet every individual note retains its clarity in my eyes Brian Tatler is what Kirk Hammett aspired to be but just ever so slightly missed the mark I hope Brian and Diamond Head release more albums of freshly composed material in the very near future each to their own and everyone has their Rock God it just so Happens my Rock God's name is Brian Tatler a phenomenal guitarist who was well ahead of his time! Thank you Brian for giving me the passion for the instrument, for sharing your music which has gotten me thru some really tough times in life and been there thru the best times of my life and your easy going laid back nature has made the tutorial videos you've done easy to follow and learn from what can I say you're an awesome human being 😊🤘
That guitar solo is epic.
Genial. Muchas gracias Brian!!!
