This is honestly the best exercise I've ever found for my glutes, inner thighs and hamstrings; however, in the version I found you lean your body farther forward, lunge deeper and the results are way better.
... yes, this is how I have always done this movement. The move demonstrated in this video is great for beginners.

Is it safe to elevate your straight leg while doing these? I’m close to side split and elevating foot on a bench/step stool and rotating hip forward gives me a very deep squat and stretches my adductors. I load with light weight and go for reps in preparation for split training.

It's the same thing they work in aerobic pairs with the gluteals it stretches out the illiopsoas
