In Magic: the Gathering, Viashinos were recently retyped to be Lizards! I thought that meant it was a good time to take a look at the creature type.

"Elf Lizard Wizard" may be the most satisfying creature type to say out loud

And I also love that I can pinpoint the exact card by the creature type alone.
With the Viashino errata, there will be three more regular Lizard Wizards
I'm sure the card exists simply for that reason

“Coastal Lizard” should definitely be a creature at some point. Maybe if they resurrect the core set…
Coastal Rootwalla, with Madness for 0 and the ability to pump up its toughness 1/turn for low cost. Like the fat-bottomed control crabs we see pretty often.

Basking Rootwalla is my second-favorite card in the entirety of MTG. Lovely to see the little guy here.

Ahhhh lizards, I'm a big fan of lizards, they're pretty cool. Even though I'm more of a non-mammalian synapsid guy. I wonder if we'll ever see a Dimetrodon in MTG, just like how I wonder if we'll ever see "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

I can envision a future where a new, heavily-pushed Lizard would shred every format and make it to the top of this list. They would have to name it Teeka's Lizard as it would be the only name that would give it justice.
Another important part about viashino pyromancers run through standard is that there was a standard legal instant called wizzard lightning that cost 3 to do 3 but was discounted to be a lightning bolt if you controled a wizard and in mono red there was only really viashino pyromancer and one other mono red wizard that cost less than 3 mana.
I love Viashino Heretic. One of my favorite cards in my Chandler (my actual name as well) Commander deck.
Give liquimetal coating / torque to him, you'll blow up almost anything!

I can't properly convey the emotional whiplash I suffered when seeing my dear friend Scorched Spitter followed promptly by my mortal enemy Frilled Mystic.
Viashino Sandstalker was a great card for it's time. 4 hasty power for 3 mana was the best deal around, and like Nizzahon said putting it back into your hand wasn't 100% downside because of Cursed Scroll, and any time you can turn a downside into an upside in mtg you have the potential for competitive success. It was also good because your oppo always had to account for it after you played, even though it wasn't on the board, so even though it wasn't there it still was affecting the game. As an aggro player, any time you can turn just having mana and cards into a game changing affect back on a control deck, it was nice.
Oh I'm really happy seeing Lore Drakkis in this. He was one of my favorite cards in my Izzet Drakes deck. And he was kn theme too!
On Incubation//Incongruity, the reason it is seeing play in Modern Living End is because it synergises very well with Bloodbraid Marauder. Bloodbraid Marauder requires Delerium to Cascade and Incubation puts 2 card types in the graveyard. The Incongruity half rarely sees play.
Ah yes, can't have Viashino and Lizard, but having Dog, Wolf, Fox, and Jackal is totally fine, having Wurm and Worm is fine, and having Djinn and Efreet is normal.
I started to watch this with my lunch in a mall. At the table in front of me there are two kids. One of them has a plastic animal toy in hand... And it's a lizard. How epic.
Riveteers Requisitioner was a nice two drop viashino. The new one drop reckless lackey kind of takes its place now. Not sure which is better
I remember thinking it was odd that the anthropomorphic cats of mirrodin and regular cats of say Amonkhet were both considered just cats. But from a tribal support standpoint, I couldn't complain much. Having good support locked behind semantics would've been a pain

No no and no
No, those are all fantasy creatures that predate Magic, as opposed to Viashino/Leonin/Loxodon etc. being MtG-specific takes on lizard/cat/elephant people. Cephalid might end up becoming octopus, though.

So they remove viashino, a already established creature type and at the same time add new animal types all the time (mice not just being rats for example)? Talk about inconsistency in designdirection

Retiring Viashino was a mistake. WOTC could have developed the Viashino as thier own original lizardfolk. Instead they threw it away.
I was super attached to Viashino in general. I won't say that I see the value in consolidating them all, but after the slap in the face that was having Kylox on the ads in Karlov Manor only to have him die immediately in the story, I really feel awful.
There are still viashino in the game, the only thing changing is the creature type. Others like the ainok, leonin, rhox and loxodon are their own animalfolk, they weren’t “thrown away”

I really wish theyd make a bazaar of Bagdad stule card where it would draw 1, discard 2 so it could still enable these kinds of decks in commander because original bazaar is so dang expensive

We're both bird guys, you and I. We have a love bird and a green cheeked conuren But i just got a pet lizard (dispar uromastyx) and she is my world. My partner is into lizards so this means a lot to us!
this is a disappointing change. i wish they would also do the same treatment for werewolves, errata them to become just wolves

Why the hell didn't they do the same thing for homarids into crabs BTW? They're even less anthropomorfic than Viashinos FFS!

I get why they changed viashino to lizards, but still, it feels like this game loses more and more of its personality with every set...
