I love these old XC races. These races from the late 70,s to the Ngugi era are my favorite. Things really were not as interesting since the end of the the end of the Tergat era. My two favorite runners of all time in cross is Lopez and Ngugi. Ngugi looked like he was jogging as he cranked out 2:54 per k. Lots of respect for Pat Porter. He was an American that really put up a great fight every time he hit the grass.
Carlos Lopes, dos maiores atletas de todos os tempos. Viva Portugal.
Jon Brown ---- thank you for sharing this positively brilliant race! What an absolute nail-biter --- one of the best races I have ever seen. I am so glad for the winner, young Debele (and equally glad that a recently outed cheater didn't win. Propriety forbids the mention of a specific name).
Sincere thanks!
Just one cheater?
Went up to Gateshead to watch that day. Thanks for sharing Jon.
Great footage from 1983 1500M. Thanks to the camcorder man and whoever preserved this and posted it.
Great race! Alberto had already had the duel in the sun with Beardsley. He really was never the same after that race. I read that he and Beardsley both admitted that the Boston duel affected them both .
Alberto Salazar's last world class level finish in a race. He literally fell of the athletic cliff after this and became an average runner whom could no longer compete at the world class level. The Boston Marathon race of 1982 really impacted him, even though he did win the NY Marathon that fall, his 3rd straight win. So interesting to fall off so quickly, like he aged 10 years in just a few months. I was a huge Salazar fan back in the early 80's and I was so surprised when he lost the Rotterdam race. He was such a cocky and confident young man, but then in a flash he became mortal! I actually met him once. He was at this running clinic before the Twins City Marathon in 1993. He didn't run, Ed Eyestone and Lisa Weidenbach were the winners, I ran my first marathon and was happy to break 4 hours, hehehe. But I Alberton at the clinic how much he inspired me and he signed an autograph. He seemed very nice and smiling all the time. Made my day, to meet my idol ❤
wow well that had me on the edge of my seat..
... Meravigliosi anno '80...che nostalgia...
Great effort! You are all winners!
Great run by Dave Clark just behind Ovett in the 1500m.
Two great Welshman, they were both serving in the RAF.
Yes that’s when the RAF had some top lads, including Julian Goater, Deon McNeilly, Mike Hurd, etc. Army and RN could never beat them.
my dream is to design the ultimate XC course with a few ice cold streams, a muddy section, a wood chip stretch over a canopy of trees😌
The beginning of African dominance,,, But what a wonderful run by dave Clark !!!!!! FANTASTIC !!!!!!
not at all, take a look at the ugly course, race in The States in '84 LMAO
Salazar in tights GTFOH he must have been roastin'!!!! LMFAO 🤣🤤😂😅
I’m a big Salazar fan (as an athlete, not so much as a coach). And I agree, that was stupid. So was running wide on the course the last quarter of the race. He screwed himself out of a medal for those two things alone.
I see the winner chose to unsportsmanlike cut across Lopes at the death.
What? It's racing. Cross country racing. There are no lanes. Brilliant race by all the protagonists.
There's racing and then there's being a ****. Try doing that with me and see how long you stand upright.
@@redrum4100you wouldn’t do anything. You obviously aren’t fast enough to understand that no one cares. You wouldnt be at the front of the race. The winner obviously did nothing wrong
I didn’t know Salazar was 2nd and 4th in the WXC champs
He was also the bronze medalist in the 1981 World Cup in the 10,000 meters. That was a couple months before the NYC marathon.
what was Ovetts winning time? 3.50? or under?
More hurry steve
Last lap 55.95
'Castella', 'De Costello' or 'Costello'; which one is correct?
Neither....de Castella is correct
@@markcera3230 You know that; I know that; but the announcer didn't know that, Mark! They were the three different names he called De Castella without hitting the bullseye!
Haha! 😂 They should've called him "Moustache", the other is Alberto Cova. Both Legends..
Dreadful commentary...its not hard de Castella...Deek would have done 😎
de Castella
