I love these old XC races. These races from the late 70,s to the Ngugi era are my favorite. Things really were not as interesting since the end of the the end of the Tergat era. My two favorite runners of all time in cross is Lopez and Ngugi. Ngugi looked like he was jogging as he cranked out 2:54 per k. Lots of respect for Pat Porter. He was an American that really put up a great fight every time he hit the grass.

Jon Brown ---- thank you for sharing this positively brilliant race! What an absolute nail-biter --- one of the best races I have ever seen. I am so glad for the winner, young Debele (and equally glad that a recently outed cheater didn't win. Propriety forbids the mention of a specific name).
    Sincere thanks!

Great race! Alberto had already had the duel in the sun with Beardsley. He really was never the same after that race. I read that he and Beardsley both admitted that the Boston duel affected them both .

Alberto Salazar's last world class level finish in a race. He literally fell of the athletic cliff after this and became an average runner whom could no longer compete at the world class level. The Boston Marathon race of 1982 really impacted him, even though he did win the NY Marathon that fall, his 3rd straight win. So interesting to fall off so quickly, like he aged 10 years in just a few months. I was a huge Salazar fan back in the early 80's and I was so surprised when he lost the Rotterdam race. He was such a cocky and confident young man, but then in a flash he became mortal! I actually met him once. He was at this running clinic before the Twins City Marathon in 1993. He didn't run, Ed Eyestone and Lisa Weidenbach were the winners, I ran my first marathon and was happy to break 4 hours, hehehe. But I Alberton at the clinic how much he inspired me and he signed an autograph. He seemed very nice and smiling all the time. Made my day, to meet my idol ❤

Yes that’s when the RAF had some top lads, including Julian Goater, Deon McNeilly, Mike Hurd, etc. Army and RN could never beat them.

my dream is to design the ultimate XC course with a few ice cold streams, a muddy section, a wood chip stretch over a canopy of trees😌

I’m a big Salazar fan (as an athlete, not so much as a coach). And I agree, that was stupid. So was running wide on the course the last quarter of the race. He screwed himself out of a medal for those two things alone.

I see the winner chose to unsportsmanlike cut across Lopes at the death.

He was also the bronze medalist in the 1981 World Cup in the 10,000 meters. That was a couple months before the NYC marathon.
