Leitão said before the race that it was going to be fast, but medals were not guaranteed. The strategy was to wear out everybody, because he knew the sprint was his major flaw. Canário helped a little too. Shame that he was never able to achieve this level again for a number of reasons.
I think up until Sydney 2000 they were running 5000m heats, semis, final and 10,000m heats and final! Then it became more corporate/commercial and so was condensed to fewer rounds and less athletes from less countries.
@ I have to transfer them, but I just wanted to let you know that I have the steeplechase (8-10) and the 1,500 meter final (8-11) one semi final (8-10) and part of 1st round - heat 2 & heat4 (8-9).

Aouita ran the whole race wide, covering many more metres than great Leitao and he still won in 13.05 easily, he was capable 12:50 that day
