What a phenomenal, fascinating race. I didn't even know Daniel Komen ran cross-country. Wow, Mr. Brown. It must have been a tad intimidating to run against a man who had just set a 3,000-meter record so mind-boggling that it still -- 22 years later -- hasn't been approached. And to beat him!? Absolutely stunning. Thank you -- thank you -- for giving us track fans another invaluable piece of athletics history.
Komen placed 2nd at World Junior XC in 1994 and went to race in Toronto at High Park and Vancouver for the sun run right after. I was in the Toronto race, Spring Run Off. Komen's first mile was about 4:10! He was running with Philp Mosema (Ist at world juniors) and Simon Chemomwa (2nd in the senior world cross). Komen won the 8km in 22;20. He was phenomenal! Major congrats to Jon Brown for pulling out a stunning win.
@@randyevermore9323 actually was a pretty good Cross Country competitor. Here in Spain in the early/mid 90´s he usually used to compete in different cross country races throughout the winter season, including Top 3/5 finishes in Llodio, Italica, Granollers, etc against top notch opposition.
I remember being in the crowd for this race, Brendan Foster‘s new year XC special, on a cold but sunny Durham afternoon ... Daniel Komen was an incredible athlete, and it was great to see him run ... but this was Jon Brown’s day, himself a great athlete, with two Olympic forth places in the marathon ... what a great race!
Komen was a pretty talented guy. To beat him on any occasion is a enormous accomplishment. JB is a fighter and Komen was no match in the mental game. This is a great race and a test of will.

42years later?
@@kevinjames7012 Oops. That should have been 22 years when I posted it. Thanks for pointing it out.

"He's certainly trying to win this race!" - legendary commentary.
Nice one Jon. One of the few races a Brit doesn't get stomped on in the last lap!

Oh, man! I was not expecting that! What a fantastic race, and win! Well done, Jon!
Y los corredores mexicanos?
Jon, do you happen to know where I can get hold of a copy of “Hercules”?
How good was Jon Brown
?!! 👏👏👏👏
You mean 22 years later !!!!!!
Yes, I did mean 22 years.
Damn shame Komen never won a world championship in XC.
