Don’t forget Steve wasn’t a full time athlete. At the time he was an RAF aircraft technician based at RAF St Athan. A top guy, gentleman, humble and modest. An inspiration for all runners in the RAF of every ability.
I never heard any call Rob DeCastella call running stride as being perfect and efficient, due is all over the place for a world class runner, Lopes’ form is very smooth and tight
Great footage (thanks} of Deek and Lopes--let's not forget they ran an Olympic marathon 2 months before; Jones didn't--pretty sure both Lopes and Deek could have gotten the record as well if they hadn't run the Olympic marathon. Their performance is as good if not better than Jones. Taking nothing away from the effort by Jones; but let's be realistic-I don't think he'd beat them.
What a load of twaddle, this was Steve Jones second marathon ever so a complete newcomer to the event, he himself stated he had no idea what time they would be going through the halfway mark. You don't know how much harder Jones would have run if Deke and Lopes were fresh, Jones was one of the toughest runners in the sport and Deke and Lopes were pushing each other on, by themselves they would have run slower still. You also forget that Jones had done the 10K in LA and had being bogged by injuries and was bogged by injuries his entire career.
@@straycatttt2766 How about this then: a world record effort by Steve-but, Jones didn't outrun Deek or Carlos at their best here; Jones wasn't even in the final of the 10k in the Olympics. And thus, had much more time to rest and prepare.

…Imagine being chased by Basil Fawlty! 😅
What a great finish and Steve just jogging around in the chute!...
And would defend his Chicago title the next year. I watched that and it inspired me to train and run my first marathon then next year, in Chicago.
How did it go?
Carlos Lopes later in 1987 broke Steve Jones' record clocking 2'07"11 in Rotterdam.

Carlos Lopes has an excellent running form! I wish I could run like that.

I'm pretty sure the commentator meant to be referring to Lopes in that instance, and just got the name wrong.
Same year, Carlos Lopes get his gold in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Just two months before this race Lopes defeated a great field in the LA Olympic marathon
A Welshman
IMAGINE WHAT THESE GUYS WOULD HAVE RUN IN THE NIKE ALPHAFLYS OR VAPORFLYS YEH ME TO.
Dios mio Rey mio esto si es deporte de verdad
Deek had a very uneconomical style compared to the rest......but still an exceptional marathon runner in his time.
"Get off ME!" @ 4:28 lol.

STEVE JONES WAS A WHITE MAN IN A BLACK MANS BODY IN THIS RACE HE WENT THROUGH HALFWAY IN 61 47SEC AMAZING RUN ALL BY HIMSELF.

“Taking nothing away from the effort by Jones, but…”. you proceed to take away from the effort by Jones.
