  • This bow review features the Mathews V3 compound bow. The Mathews V3 is available in a 27 and 31 model. Dan Pickar puts the bow through a speed test and sits down to talk design with Mathews engineer Mark Hayes. The bow is quiet, compact and packs some power! It has it all for bow hunting or archery target shooting.

A+++ video. Love hearing from a lead Mathews engineer on all the "why's" of their design. I own the V3 27 and it's the best bow I've ever shot. Love it!

@@Accretions I spent a lot of time messing with stabilizers and found them to be a big help. The typical 4 - 6 in front stabilizer is not worth it. I'm running a 10 up front and 8 inch back with 3 oz up front and 5 oz back and it really made a difference. Curious what you do? Let me know.

Since 1991 I've been tuning the arrows to what the bow likes. I'm glad you touched upon what to do without using top hats. So many people today come in with an unwavering idea to use some very specific arrow setup with very specific components and a very specific weight. When you sight in your hunting rifle, you buy several different boxes of ammo (or handload), and see what shoots best out of the rifle. You don't pick one brand ammo, and modify the hell out of the rifle to get it to shoot that one load. It's the same with bows. FWIW- My V331 tuned great out of the box, with centershot exact, and a little bit "weak" spine vs. what charts and software says I should be using.

I shoot a Mathew’s Traverse. Best bow I’ve ever shot. I will never get rid of it.

For me the best thing a shorter axle to axle bow offers is the ability to carry accessories on your chest whether its a vest, back pack straps, bino carriers etc. The angle of the string is away from you with short bows, have a shot with a large compound, recurve or longbow and see how close it is to your chest. The last thing you need to worry about at full draw is the string collecting anything as you release it. That will open your eyes up.

wow, this really helped me understand the top hat system and the value of changing the mods seeing that i have a 27 in draw. Thanks guys, going to put my money down on the 27 today.

Awesome intel. Just got a V3 31 with 75lb draw couple months ago. I love the bow and it is definitely faster than my old Halon. Im shooting 465 grains and it is just a flat shooting bow! Love watching Eastmans tv. I remember 15 years ago on the opening tv show Mike saying no fences here and in the background was a fence! Always got a kick out of that. Haha

I bought the 31 V3 only because I’m coming off of the 28 Triax. And I shot the 28” Triax better than any bow I have ever owned in the last 25 years.
I did shoot the 27 V3 and it shoots great amd holds great.
Just wanted something bigger this time. I wish they made a 30 inch that would be perfect in my eyes. That’s probably what they’re doing for 2022

I used to archery hunt growing up and it’s been about ten years since I’ve done anything with a bow and i want to fet back into it. Is it okay to start with such a high end bow for a first bow again?

I've noted, some pictures on the net of the v3 27 quiver mount locations are different, ie where the quiver mount bolt goes through. Some are situated centre to the front and back of the bridge riser and other pictures show the mount area way to front of riser. What's the go with this, are Mathews subbing out risers or did they change the quiver mount position as the middle area may of been a bit of a weak spot. Does anybody know or have an idea why? Be nice to know why this is.

Regardless of what the engineer says…it’s a trend they follow. Just like bows years ago that where longer in a to a length. It’s nothing but what equates to bow sales. Also these short bows have severe string angles which I don’t care for at all. You don’t see alot of pros shooting 28” bows on the line at competitions. There is a reason for that. I’ll keep my forgiving 34” bows.
