Joe and the Claimers were actually pretty terrifying. The way they all fought over the shirt that Michonne wore in that house and bickered over "who would get her first". Not to mention what they were going to do to Carl and the actor playing Joe was really good.

I actually liked The Claimers as villians simply because they wasn't after communities and things like that but just traveled the land terrorizing people unfortunate enough to meet them. They also had a lasting effect on the series, making Rick even more hardened because he killed Joe and Dan. Joe's death in particular is one of my favorites of the show. For this time in the show, they were a big threat behind The Governor obviously. Can't wait until the next video!

The Claimers were Randall’s group done right. Randall’s group in Season 2 were the first threat that actually attacked the group and meant harm prior to the Governor and Woodbury, Vatos don’t count because it was all an act. Randall’s group was a wandering group of bandits similar to the Claimers but unlike the Claimers we didn’t see much of them other than Randall himself and the few members Rick and Hershel killed at the bar. The Claimers were perfect because they were a huge threat that actually showed themselves and fought with the group. What they nearly did to everyone was just terrifying. I am thankful Beth wasn’t still with Daryl when they ran into the Claimers.

@@Shannon-vv6rr Maybe they were early Claimers, it was over a year later that Rick, Carl, Michonne, and Daryl ran into the Claimers. Most likely during that time they lost most of their 30 men strong group and their heavy weaponry as well but they maintained a strong presence.

I liked the Claimers. Not because they unalived people, or because they R-worded people, those parts make me hate them more than any other villain group in the show. I liked them because from a writing standpoint, they were realistic. World ends and society is permanently crippled, people start grouping up and travelling until they either find a safe place to stay and fortify, or they keep to a nomadic lifestyle. There are no laws, no rules, nothing stopping people from doing whatever they want. People become monsters, but not the dead ones that shamble and rip into the living, they become inhuman creatures that look and act just like a normal human being, but they are anything but. The apocalypse means nothing remotely bad when they view it as a better alternative to the world that came before. They enjoy it, they find new ways to get what they want, and they don't let anything stop them. The Claimers are possibly the most evil group in the show, even the governor was just one man commanding a group of manipulated people. The Claimers were evil, but they were realistic. I hated them as "people", but I loved them as characters on a script. They showed just how far people will go when the world stops being the world.

Joe' death was epic. It completely caught me off guard. This was back when twd was telling small stories. With character development and high stakes.
Then it got bored of that and decided to make a show about hundreds of people I didn't care about and didn't know. And they made the dead an insignificance. To think they could have just ended on a high. But no, we got "meh" and cash grab spin offs. Boooo!

The claimers work into my “animal theory” which spans from after the fall of the prison until arrival at Alexandria.
The theory is that to represent these villains regression and to show they are no longer human they are given an animal each to represent them and who’s traits they represent.
The claimers are wolves, working in a pact, claiming everything they come across and rick is forced to bite joe’s throat out which is something wolves do all the time cause they know how sensitive it is.
Terminus are bears since their level of threat is determined by their hunger, they hold no morals and loyalties and will even eat their own (like Gareth having his brother cut up to be eaten) if they are hungry enough.
Then the hospital people spiders, they ensnare into a web and while you are there drain you of everything they can take.
And if you want throw them in, wolves unfittingly enough are not wolves, but locust, they travel around, decent on a place, harvest it, strip it bare and leave nothing before just moving on.

    • @inwit594

The thing about wolves is that even they don't act so territorially and aggressive towards eachother.
'Alpha theory' is only something that meaningfully applies to wolves in captivity, as they're typically put in with wolves they don't know. Wolves, ironically enough, are very protective of their own pack as it's their family, not just something exclusively for protection.
Wolves in the wild are usually led by a patriarch and a matriarch, usually the oldest mating pair, as they both have the most experience and hunt together and need to hunt together to effectively support their young, as either one of them alone isn't capable of bringing down larger animals or bringing enough small animals back. It remains this way even until they're very old, as their immediate subordinate are often their own family members and they don't tend to kill eachother or even challenge eachother all that often, although it's been known to happen.
The claimers are more like zebras, or hippos. They definitely live in a pack or a group, but they are NOT friends with the other members. It is exclusively an arrangement for protection, not companionship or love. Feels weird that herbivores tend to be the least social, eh?
While you could say the claimers are like wolves in captivity, it wouldn't really make sense because wolves that don't know eachother don't form packs unless they're attracted to eachother. The claimers, on the other hand, only do it for protection.

This is the first video of yours that I have had recommended to me, but man, it was great. I completely agree that Joe and the Claimers were so much more memorable than their comic counterparts. They were a small arc but an incredibly memorable (and frankly important) one.
They were responsible for so much when you get down to it: They solidified Daryl and Rick's bromamce. They gave Rick the resolve to do what he needed to protect those he cared for. They (especially being back to back with Terminus) destroyed Rick's ability to trust people and create the "Feral Rick" we know and love from Season 5. And most importantly, they were the source of the murder jacket.
Small time villains with a big impact. There's a reason I remember them after all these years. Thanks for the video.

Great videos! I'm from Philadelphia so something intrigued me for years. The episode Nebraska in season 2. The guys Dave and Tony from Randall's group. They were from Philadelphia and they said Philly fell fast and was a mess. Then they went south through I95. At I95 the old Philadelphia navy base still exists. The south of the city under the skyline can house over 250,000 people. The airport is near there too. Rick is flown from Virginia which we see in the original teaser. He would fly up to the southern part of the city. The northern part is more spread apart and it houses the open drug market. In real life many unfortunately die daily which could explain why Philly would have fell fast but also the way the city is set up. The government (CRM) could seal off the south from skyline to the naval base and also seal off that section of the city east to west. Dave told Rick about Nebraska being a safe zone. He also said military boats took survivors to various islands. Possibly he could have meant Virgil's island and Padre. He also said that Fort Benning fell which was confirmed by Mitch from the Governors group. We know CRM had undercover agents so to speak in Nebraska( Huck) and also Jadis was trading test subjects. Could it be possible that Dave was also a undercover CRM agent? Do you think at the very least Rick will remember this conversation he had in the bar? It was the first two humans Rick killed so I think he should at least have a recollection of this. In the new teaser I saw a military boat sealing the city off in the Marina. In real life to this day they do have boats down there.

While I think it’s a bit of a stretch to think the guys in the bar could’ve been CRM, (based off of their general attitudes like pissing inside the bar, and getting outgunned 2 on 1 by rick). But everything else you bring up is extremely interesting and to be honest, I think you’ve put more thought into than the writers ever actually will.
The Philly line in the bar is a great catch though, always forget about that. It’s strange Philly is seen in as good condition as it is in world beyond.

@@BURP39R lol thank you. I really thought bout it since then. I wanted write some fan fiction stories and do crossovers with other stories for fun. I use be really creative. I just have had time to put it all together. But as the story unfolded over the years alot of the major plot points do go back to that scene. Now I know when it first aired they probably didn't have anything like this planned. But everything CRM related calls back to it. I think it would be cool if Rick at least remembers it. But we all know they have got a bad habit of forgetting things and not connecting things. Just like after season 3 of Fear. They ruined the entire show after the damn explosion. But as long as the Fear writing team stays far away from the spinoffs we got hope lol.

@@Swell-Films thank you brother. Love your style. I wish you the best going forward and look forward to future videos. But I know back then they probably didn't have anything planned. But a lot of the story that unfolds over time calls back to that. But I know they got a bad habit of not connecting things at time. Like how Fear fell apart after season 3 or the main show how Virgil just disappears. I only thought the guy Dave maybe could be a CRM undercover because of how charismatic he was plus I heard the actor in real life does a lot of guest spots. But Jadis couldn't be the only person trading test subjects. Plus Cobalt if it happened across Philly. The way the city is setup geographic-wise it makes sense they could blow everything North of the city's skyline.(The city is like other cities really spread apart) below the skyline though is like one huge piece of land. It runs perfectly north to south and east to west until it hits the river on every side except going North. So they could have dropped bombs all cross the city above Center City. Anyway happy new year and hopefully the Ones who Live is more then just six shows and we learn more about CRM leading to a huge end game. I hope Rick at least thinks back to the bar since its first time he killed a person and had such a lengthy conversation. It would make sense for him to remember unless they have him forget everything after the bridge.

    • @johncap6495
      @johncap6495 7 місяців тому +2

@@Swell-Films one last thing. Sorry lol. But originally they said they mapped out a story to keep the OG show on for about 12 more seasons. This was before Kirkman ended it in real life. When they announced they were ending the show. Norman Reedus and JDM were shocked because they thought the show was going forward for another 5-10 years. I think since fans got mad about the formula they used to tell stories( like we would get a show about Rick, then a show about Darryl and Carol, then someone else and so on) it would be like three or four episodes at times before we would get back to Rick or back to Darryl. So these spinoffs equal 18 episodes. That's a whole season. And they use to do breaks for a few months after 8 episodes anyway. So now we get 6 straight episodes focused on a character and so on. So too me the three spinoffs really was like another season 12.

You keep saying Lou. It's Len who took Daryl's rabbit and it was Len who planted it in his bag. Lou was the one Rick strangles in the bathroom.

The Claimers are worst of TWD writing distilled into three episodes.
They're lawful and honorable and Joe is more or less honest. Those are all good qualities to have. If the writers had just stopped there and forced them into conflict with Rick it would have made for a very compelling half season arc in which the "who is the REAL villain" trope the show constantly tried and failed to do was on full display. It would have been very interesting and thought provoking.
But it's against the law to have nuance in TWD so like every other antagonist group, they made them laughably and nonsensically evil so Rick was justified in biting a dude's throat out and there was no question who the the good guys are.
Poor writing and execution at its poorest. We saw the same thing with Terminus. Making them laughably evil and needlessly brutal so it was okay to murder them in horrific ways.
This show was a fucking joke.

      I disagree.
It’s realistic to have a villain group such as the Claimers in this setting considering the entire societal framework of the world has crumbled so evil people are free to do as they please without repercussions from law enforcement. The apocalypse simply brought the deepest and darkest inclinations in the human heart and the Claimers were a representation of the worst possible scenario. They were pure evil, but it makes sense when you take into account realism and human psychology. If you don’t believe certain individuals would unmask their hidden depravity in a lawless environment then you’re underestimating the extent of human cruelty.
I also think you have to take into consideration their significant villainous impact of the main cast. For Rick, they pushed him to his absolute limit in terms of savagery and violence, thereby forcing him to confront that side of himself, just when he was starting to ease up a little bit. Their actions also led to the reunification of Daryl and the main group, while solidifying his brotherly bond with him and Rick. Michonne and Carl also noticeably grow closer after the traumatic experience.
I think their role was more-so regulated to their overall impact of the protagonists, rather than their depths as characters.
Gareth and Terminus had some depth, they were genuinely good people trying to rescue survivors until they got raided by that hostile group, still not an excuse to resort to cannibalism, but it’s a reason nevertheless. They weren’t just evil for the fun of it as you suggest.
Furthermore, Shane & Negan have shown that not all villians in TWD are depicted as irredeemable monsters, Shane was a decent person pre-apocalypse who unfortunately adapted too fast and spiraled into madness out of envy. Negan, on the other hand, had clear standards (forbidding sexual violence and child killings), had a strong philosophy and goal regarding rebuilding civilization, and has had a long and trying redemption arc, proving that he is capable of remorse, change and humanity. That’s plenty of nuance in terms of antagonistic characters.
So no, I would disagree that the villains in TWD have no “nuance”, hell even the Governor’s character was altered from the comics to make him more sympathetic and dynamic.
