Someone hasn't played previous EDF games if they expect consistent frames. If it isn't running at 5 fps then you're just not chanting EDF hard enough.

I bought this last week, and played the first 2 levels. I thought "meh" and all of a sudden im at mission 80. Fucking amazing game.
I judged the cover to harshly and I decided to play it with ps now, I'm addicted to this game its not a joke so much fun
Bad? The game engine is amazing and is a breath of fresh air. The destructible environment, its videogames at its most pure form.

7 months late but I'm here to answer the question.
Yes, the only time I seen the online feature work without the PS+ is free to play games. Thankfully it's on the PC as well so if you don't want to have to pay a subscription then that would be the way to go. Keep in mind you can do local co-op without subscription so if you want to play with family member it let's you.

Theres also TONS of weapon unlocks that can take months get (or longer) if you play on Inferno mode (like a extremely hard mode). I've played every version of the game and never tire of it!

Still the best game ever at least being my first entry into the series. I love the humor, simple combat but complicated ass yet awesome arsenal and the frame rate which actually makes me go holy shit when a huge explosion drops or there's too many bugs yet it's actually normal in the series xD. I don't know how some say there's no strategy and that it's just look and shoot while on higher difficulties depending on your class and if you're playing single player/multiplayer it can be important to stick together because if you're on your own without a reliable arsenal you're pretty much good as dead. As a Ranger you're versatile with an arsenal of mass destruction or support while being able to heal your npc squad under your command if you get med packs which is unique only to the ranger to be able to share med pick ups with npcs (If this translates into multiplayer I've yet to try), as a Fencer you have weapons of mass destruction that can turn the tides of a battle but you're slow and using them can be complicated so you need to plan accordingly for your mission while even using a deflector after side thrusting to cancel the animation and maintain speed although you can combo a side thrust with blade twin spears to maintain mobility (Something I learned just recently actually). Air Raiders may be support that can help a Fencer use their missile launchers of mass destruction or other classes like giving the Wing Divers energy with a Plasma Battery Gun or a generator version you place down to give them energy (This list can go on forever but ya get the idea), however where their real fire power lies is calling in a HUGE variety of artillery support and a lot of vehicles which can span to tanks, APCs, helicopters, bikes, crawlers, even a freaking huge mech from what I've been hearing which I think there's three variants of to my knowledge so that's really awesome. With their artillery they can call for mortar strikes, normal air missiles, bomb runs, and cruise missiles but I think there's much more that's very destructive and more powerful. And the Wing Divers, the Goddesses of the Sky, are a really fun yet interesting class I should try out more but I've played enough to get their gameplay. They have the ability to go wherever they want but with limited fuel however it refuels once you stop moving so it's fair. The weapons are reeeeallly fun to play with, however they all drain a certain amount of energy from your fuel reserves so not only will you have to balance flying mobility but you'll also have to use your ammo wisely be it a one shooter that drains you immediately or a magazine that takes awhile before you need to reload from your reserves. The beauty of this class is though you can be on buildings, over enemies, have faster mobility than a ranger or maybe even a Fencer (Although can't be sure with their dodge cancel ability) so mobility is their definite strength (Although with low armor beware especially on higher difficulties).
In summary if you don't care for deep story but love action, generic but good and funny done on purpose dialogue (By generic I mean just their voices fit so well for an alien invasion it's not even funny although it is), enjoy something hack and slashy and a little mindless like the Warrior series but you would like some intense giant bugs/robot fighting action that are bigger than you and on higher difficulties it's actually a challenge but it rewards you with really good loot depending on the level you're playing and difficulty, if you like the classes I mentioned with a fondness for over 800 weapons in total (Okay maybe 801 but I didn't lie, I just curved the truth a little lol), annnnd you love to get immersed screaming EDF! or singing the EDF anthem, then I think you'll love it! However the frame rate can tank quite a bit although that's always been part of the series because of HOW MUCH FREAKING enemies there can be on the map to where you may say "How the hell can we survive this and oooh is that a weapon crate?". To me in my opinion it's definitely a must play only if you're into the genre it's about or if ya wanna try something different but fun (Although it isn't for everyone so maybe watching gameplay is a good idea)

It's kinda weird reading all these comments saying ,"Never hear of this game till now" or "Wow what a generic shooter" not that I'm trying to bash anyone's opinion I'm just saying this feels like one of those classic games that everyone at least heard of or grew up with I mean literally everyone I know has had some weird experiences with this game either through first or second experience. Overall I cand believe they are updating this game and I'm glad but too bad I've diverged from Sony and went Xbox one.

I never had a ps2 or Xbox back then. I was a gameboy advance and type o' guy, now I'm a hardcore gamer. Heck, hardcore gamers didn't exist when I was a kid. The first next gen feeling game I played was the first LEGO Star Wars game on PC. I gotta admit, I was skeptical, 'cause it seemed like a kid's game, but I was pleasantly surprised, then years later got a Wii and played more LEGO games, Medal of Honor, and other games, then in 2009 I got a PC and started more hardcore games. Then, got a 360 in 2012 and a PS4 this year. I love modding on PC, and simple playing and console. I should really get a new PC, a gaming PC from 2009 can run 2013 games, but just at 20fps on low settings. That's my gaming story. I just felt chatty.

Yeah it feels like when we were all younger "Hardcore Gamer" looked like the guys from that southpark WOW episode but now that I'm older they look more like you or me, but overall its fun to hear that people cared about this game back then

For anyone who thinks this game is 'too simple', I will only suggest trying the later levels on Inferno difficulty online. You're gonna need some solid strategies and great co-ordination with your teammates if you want to get through them (even a load of armour will only help so much).
We need more games like this that are just pure fun and simple multilayer features. For me game of the year here :D EDF! EDF! EDF!

One of the decoys used in EDF. I haven't played the PC port yet, but I think it's a dlc. The decoy is used by air raiders to stall the enemy while their vehicles drop, gather a bunch of enemies to drop an airstrike, or too simply look at.

I'm getting a ps4 just for this
I play this split-screen with a friend and we put about 100 hours into this game. About the 1st 20 hours it is just purely fun chaos and destruction. But after that, when you try to beat this game on the hardest difficulties it has to offer... It isn't just simple ol' run an' gun fun. You actually have to have strategies and good weapon selection for nearly every different mission (Right now my favorite weapons for the Wing Diver are the Thunderbow 30, XSX Plasma Launcher, M30 Plasma Launcher, Idunn-E, and a couple of more I can't really think of the name for)
This game (at least for always having someone to play split-screen with you) is easily worth the $50 if you enjoy both the simple run an' gun beginning difficulties of the game, and the harder difficulties that can really be daunting and insane with how difficult the levels can be, but cooridinating attacks and stratigies with someone else to finally beat that chaotic mission on the hardest difficulty is just worth the experience in itself.
The weapons are fucking nuts too. Even with 100 hours put into this game, I haven't even tried or even unlocked all the weapons for even 1 out of the 4 classes and some of them still surprise me with how fun and/or powerful and situational they can be.
This game may run at litterally 15 frames a second when too much is being blown up and destroyed (even on my PS4 pro), but this may be my 12 year old in me talking but I am still blown away with how cool it is to be able to blow up litterally dozens of building with certain weapons in one single shot! Even if the frames drop while it's doing it, it's just so fun and cool to do and look at the destruction you are capable with in this game.
Overall, easily one of my favorite game of all time (don't think it would be if I wasn't playing it in split-screen most of the time), but if you have someone to play this with, and like either simple fun destruction and annihilation on easy diffictulties, or (later on in the game) trying out many different stratigies and loadouts to finally complete what seem like nearly impossible missions... get this game... and if you enjoy both of these types of gameplay, I bet it will be hard for you not to ove this game. I am still entertained and blown away by the new shit in this game after 100 hours and I haven't even gotten everything for even one single class yet.
This game is no where NEAR perfect but oh my god I love this game so damn much!
I like playing Air Raider singleplayer, I get the one vehicle I basicly just call an Ambulance, nearly indestructible and I get healed while on it, I deploy my sentries on top of my vehicle and drive around. :p

+matthew ashlin lol. I've played Dark Souls and Scholar of the First Sin all the way to NG+7 and beaten them both. even with many( and I mean MANY) attempts there were three stages in EDF that I could never beat on the top difficulty. I'm not saying that the Souls series is in any way easy...
Ahhh people are missing out! This is truly a fun game. Even better when experiencing it with friends. I learned of the first title from x-play. I was squeamish at first, But I soon came to love this franchise.
I love EDF my favorite was IA I love the whole easy kills easy life kind of thing when you get OP gear and your just stomping on enemies like their nothing it makes you feel like a god Im not to keen on the new ones though
I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone not obsesed with graphis. If you aren't looking for some deep, immersive experience with expertly crafted narrative, this will be up your alley. Nothing beats firing a rocket into a massive group of spiders, watching their corpses (sometimes in bits) fly all over the place as your game slows down a bit (feeling more like slo-mo than frame rate, rewarding you with a better view of the carnage) before you aim for one particular spider thorax in the sky and shoot that with a rocket in mid-air to see how far it launches.
This game has a weird difficulty system were your need weapons from the prevese difficulty to finish the one your playing on.
You could bypass it by playing multiplayer and let someone carry your to the end difficulty weapons

The Earth Defense Force, the organization who are tasked to save the city from huge bugs and giant robots, are the ones who actually causes the more damage XD
I had this one moment where I play as a Fencer and I have a dispersal mortar (Practically a shoulder mounted shotgun cannon which fires mortar rounds) with 3 shots each, and I just fired all of them as an artillery and every building in front of me in a 90 degree cone got DESTROYED

I'm disappointed you didn't really mention the number of guns there are, and how ridiculous they get, which for me has always been a huge plus for the game. If all the guns were average as this video made them out to be, it probably wouldn't have been as fun for me.

Insect armageddon was a blast on co-op. You're right, it's deceptively simple and that works. This is perfect arcade madness that has its players create unique and crazy experiences organically.
Air raider best class
The moment I get a PS4 I'm asking for this game for Christmas. Because nothing sounds more fun than a literal Starship Troopers simulator.

Vaegir808 Actually, there was a recent leak of a steam registry that mentioned this game. In the past those have been accurate predictors of what is coming out, so it seems like it's pretty likely, if not 1005.

So a ridiculously stupid concept game with unlimited power, bad voice acting, medium quality visuals, facing hordes of enemies, a few boring moments but in overall tons of fun? AND IT'S NOT ANOTHER DYNASTY WARRIORS?! I WANT IT!
There is also dragons, giant insects with are size of a town, walker robots,dinomechs,wasps, everything is destructible except bridges, and four classes Air Raider/Wing Diver/Fencer/Ranger, all four classes are good, the best are Wing diver (cannot drive vehicles) & Ranger (can drive vehicles). Fencer class is a little hard to get use to but is extremely powerful but (cannot drive vechicles). Air Raider calls in Vehicles & Air strikes but isn't a good offensive class but more of a support, but the vehicles they call in range from tanks to helicopters to giant mechs.
so you're telling me to spend 50$ for budget garbage? Sorry, I'd rather go broke on better games this season.

I had this on the xbox 360 and still play it to this day, and i got the newest one for ps4 and its a lot of fun for me. Yea sure it looks like a old game and put on ps4, but i find it very fun to be able to call in a tank and rain death on the enemies lol.

I found EDF 4 on Xbox 360 3 years ago and played the absolute hell out of it. (Still didnt get a Lysander Z...) I just recently got EDF 4.1 on Steam and my god does it feel good to get back into it.

This is why there are so many Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors today... because they are simple and fun, even though they look repetitive at first glace, they are so entertaining. Simplicity beats out depth in this types of games.

Had this for 5 years and I'm still playing to this day, I sold 5 of my favourite games for this (They were selling at a low price) and I have absolutely no regrets.
I already have 2025 for 360 but I'm probably going to get a ps4 for Christmas. so this review helps alot. I love the EDF franchise to death. These are by far my favorite 3rd person games and I can't wait to play on a next Gen console!
I have EDF on ps3 not sure what version it is. But it is so much fun. I can't believe they made another one for ps4. EDF is the best. I agree that it is the sharknado of video games
i played Global Defence Force when i was a little kid just watching it gives me goosebumps
I won't lie I've played every edf game so far and the 2025 (Xbox version) or the 4.1 (play version) is a massive improvement graphic wise then its predecessors. But yes no where near AAA quality but with good reason, ENEMIES! If you like fighting hordes and by hordes I mean 100+ enemies every level lol. Yes the frame rate will drop but you play any AAA title and when there's a big explosion your frame rate will drop, now times that by a hundred and you have this game but it can still run it pretty decently tho. Now to explain this game and fully experience it's glory simply go watch starship troopers and you will instantly get motivated to play this game :D
Also everyone complaining about the massive cost? That's digital which tends to always be day one full price but the game has been out for awhile now so just go to a local game store (or online) and buy second hand. Got mine for $10 at Eb games. Also it's not a solo game, you have to play coop to enjoy it's full enjoyment haha

FREAKED OUT!!! The EDF games have provided some of the best multiplayer fun I have ever had. It is just stupid mindless fun. I am going to get a PS4 now just to play this game now. No joke lol. I was going to wait till final fantasy and kingdom hearts came out. But now I need it...NOW!
EDS is a weirdly fun game. The game has never looked top notch, but it's just good old fashioned fun.

I test 3 games with my old 5 years notebook. Smooth EDF 4.1 > EDF 5 > EDF Iron Rain. EDF 4.1 has subway street zone thats not in EDF 5. EDF 4.1 wanted me to solo a Godzilla when EDF 5 sent a whole army to support me.
I played one of them year's ago and it was really fun if you ignore the graphics and the same gameplay over and over again.
EDF is possibly one of the funnest games I've ever played. it's ridiculous and I love it.
Finally bought it on a discount at 28 euro's. I was on the line of buying it for soo long, and just didn't have any friends to play it with. Now that I bought it, suddenly many of my friends bought into it as well.
After experiencing this game. EDF 5 is going to be a Day 1 buy for me once it comes out on PC. It's just too much fun!
The most fun I've had so far with my PS4 since Nov 2018, I downloaded all 3 versions thru playstation now but this is the best one yet since I can use my own Monster Music Soundtracks, (Godzilla, Jason & The Argonaunts, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, It came from beneath the sea, to name a few, oh yeah Aliens (1986).
Bro this looks fun and with all these intensive multiplayer games and serious immersive single player games, sometimes that all I want.
