Im a big fan of your stuff Mr. Drunk. In fact i rather enjoy it when you have a gander at the odd genesis title here and there. I love that guy who plays the side parts in this one. Seriously i cracked up when he appeared as the band leader on a late night talk parody. Im glad i never played a console version of primal rag. This holiday, lets all give thanks to the angry video game nerd, 16 bit consoles, & nostalgia, for helping.to make this pandemic a teensy bit less terrible ❤
A fun fact about this game: It turns out that the arcade version was bound to an encryption that has never been broken, and no one that has worked on the game has never been willing to help crack it. That means that every version that exists outside of playing it on an actual arcade board is flawed - even running it on an emulator is an imperfect experience. Also, as weird as the Pause cheat is, I do see some practical sense in it. Although it's useless for the casual audience, removing the Pause text would make taking clean screenshots for magazine and box images *much* easier. It's probably on the same level as the Konami Code that started in _Gradius_; the developers just didn't bother to take it out of the game.
The game was "encrypted" and the cabinet would "decrypt" it? Sounds like water cooler bullshit. Just saying. :p They probably just lost the source code or something.
If you notice this reply, do you have any information on what would be missing emulating the arcade version of the game. I have the CHD or whatever of Primal Rage and always thought it ran fine. But I never really played more than 15-20 minutes at a time.
Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed the video. I used a new editing software for this episode. Final Cut Pro. I would love some feedback. How's the video/audio quality?
The Sega Genesis version does have the Babe's, in order for them to appear at the end of the game, you have to perform a fatality to all of your opponents and not be defeated at the final battle, you miss a fatality - no Babe's.
I was about to ask what the deal was with that, but then I figured I had better check the comments section first. Haha, thanks for another great video guys! :)
No. We don't actually play the games while we film. We get the game footage way before hand. When you see us with controllers in our hands we're just acting.
Yeah, I kinda figured that. I just thought maybe your genesis controller got lost, or broke, or something to that effect. I should have assumed it was a joke. I guess I'm just a little slow on the uptake, huh? Lol :P
The “remove PAUSED text” cheat would actually be very useful for magazine screenshots, since taking pictures in motion is difficult but if it’s paused, it shows the text. So this cheat removed that, and lets magazines take a perfect image without any paused text.
I thought that too, however, the pause text flashes on and off. Couldn't the person just take the screen shot when the paused text flashed off? Why don't other games have this feature as well? Maybe because it's unnecessary to label a game as being paused... if it's not moving, it's paused... or frozen LOL
@@CharlesHepburn2 Back then when taking off-screen screenshots using a camera it was very difficult, you had to synchronise the camera with the refresh rate and it was easy to accidentally capture 2 frames at once. It made it easier, but it wasn’t ideal. Remove paused text is a perfect fix however.
@@justanotheryoutubechannel I realize what was involved because I lived through those years (2600 to N64 days). I don't think it would have been super hard to just click the button to take a picture when the pause text flashed off. I guess the cheat made it a bit easier... otherwise, why even have it?
@@CharlesHepburn2 Part of the flashing might’ve been to avoid burn in but I think it’s more likely to make getting photos possible, even if it wouldn’t have been easy. Either that or it’s just a cool effect. But as someone who does take photos of retro games running on CRTs, having that cheat would make it so much easier as you don’t need to time everything perfectly so it’s all in sync.
Ooh, I know what the paused cheat could be for. Back in the day, I had one of those aftermarket Genesis controllers that had a "slow motion" mode. All it did was rapidly pause and unpause the game. For most games, this meant you'd have 'paused' or whatever flashing on the screen. But this paused cheat for this game looks like it would take away that problem, which would make the hacky slow motion mode better.
Yeah, actually made me go check if Primal Rage was on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection disc. I thought maybe the cartridge they were using was borked and they with with that instead. But...this is all scripted (for the most part), and I'm almost certain their controllers are not plugged in while filming, so it would've had to have been intentional. I thought at the end they were going to reveal it was the collection they were using, but it's not on it. I'm guessing trolling of some sort. Heh.
No pause was for screen shots... A utility, like many "cheats" back in the day... Like debug modes, etc. And no sound during turbo mode was needed, as it used the otherwise sound bound cpu power to speed up the action... reasons.
The pause thing was for screen shots. you could do a move and pause with out the sign... looked better for magazine prints ect. small but good for those who needed it.
Well done, guys! Each episode gets better and better. I'd love to see a racing game episode. I can't think of too many racing games that were on both systems, though. Rock n Roll Racing, Hard Drivin', and Kawasaki Superbike Challenge are three I can think of off the top of my head.
The cheat to remove the "paused" message is suposed to take better pictures to game magazines as if the game was playing. Remember in the 90s they actually use film cameras to take pictures.
Ok...for those wondering why Dan is holding a 360 controller it's honestly to see who's paying attention, it's for comedic effect. He's done it before in past videos where he holds a Sega controller then 360 in one scene & switches back to Sega, gotta watch the detail to videos ;)
The no "paused" cheat was for if you use a slow mode controller that paused numerous times per second it would just slow down, without a flickering "paused" message on the screen.
Great video! I think they added the remove pause sign cheat to make it easier to take screenshots for magazines. You can still do it with the pause sign I guess, but the screens may look better without it.
The music for Primal Rage for the SNES is awesome. It reminds me of a new age soundtrack between the apocalypse and a new beginning of a non-former species!
You never mentioned the much better screen resolution of the Genesis! You can see it all side-by-side comparisons of the two games. The Genesis playing screen is larger! Combine that with smoother animation and more responsive gameplay and the Genesis version should have been the winner.
You forgot to mention that the genesis version has a lot more background images. The snes is missing a lot of the backgrounds. Blizzards stage and sauron stage.
I guess you could say the way how the Cult God got Greg to join was really "DINO-MITE"! Lol. Seriously, though, it was nice to see the dinosaur puppet again. I noticed that it always has it out for Dan. You must taste like Almond Joy, dude. This is one comparison that I've been waiting to watch. I never knew that the SNES game was based on a superior version. I'm glad to hear that, because that's the version I own. Good Job on yet another Suckaweet vidya, guys! Keep up the great work! It makes me happy to see you guys are so close to reaching 20K subs!
Re: the cheat that removes the PAUSED message when paused on the Genesis version, it was probably a courtesy for games journalists, so they could pause the game and take a screenshot for magazines, without the word PAUSED being on the screen.
People acting all weird because of dude holding a 360 controller, good lord, get lives, people. Anyways, great episode, guys, love the show. You guys seem so down to earth and real, I find that highly endearing seeing as UA-cam gaming channels are awash with phonies and whatnot. Again, love the show, you guys are great. Keep doing what you do, fellas.
I have to give the edge to Sega just because the Snes version animates way too choppy despite everything else it does better. Really though you should emulate the arcade if you want to play this and it's on Midway Arcade Treasures vol 1 for many consoles . There's too many sacrifices in the 16bit home ports. Even with the Sega animating better it's missing too many little things. The Snes has those little things but is a real eyesore in animation. Mortal Kombat ported well to the 16bits. Primal Rage unfortunately never did.
I wonder why they made the turbo mode silent, maybe the extra speed was too fast for the SNES’s weak CPU and they had to remove the sound driver to run the turbo mode.
I remember reading in Gamepro or Electronic Gaming Monthly, back in the day, and they were talking about games having options for clearing pause screens, giving reviewers clear pictures for taking screenshots. I'm assuming the options were implemented for days when actually taking pictures of the game on a television were the only options for capturing screenshots. Odd but makes sense.
hey been watching your show for a few years but I gotta ask a question why are you holding a 360 controller and not a Sega Genesis one like I said still like the show
removing pause makes sense if you wanted to play slo mo with a turbo controller with slow that basically turbos start so the pause on the screen isn't distracting
I know this is a review for the 16 bit consoles, but you bring up version 1.7 to 2.3. Actually 1.7 was a much better arcade version as far as smooth playing goes. Yes, they added more fatalities and such, but the game play was choppier. I wish there was a way to play 1.7 at home. That is still my favorite fighting game ever!
Something tells me the part with the scientist stabbing himself with his broken stick is an obvious reference to a funny scene from "Young Frankenstein". ;)

Vahan Nisanian OK thanks for answering. I noticed it another video and when he did it all throughout this one it annoyed the hell out of me for not knowing why.
Honestly....I forgot the controllers at home. We're not actually playing the games when we film. We do that way before we even start the script. Don't worry, I have several Genesis controllers.
Ah but the MD version has a golden shower so there! Erm...yeah I guess Greg is correct. 😒 The call back to the no lives joke in Revolution X was funny as well.

Console Wars the video/audio quality is perfect on this video.
Console Wars they treble is slightly distorted (probs just mic settings) but overall excellent. the video is great.
Console Wars AMAZING
Nothing very noticable and not at all distracting however
Console Wars its in 480p, not 720p or 1080p
netherrealm needs to get a hold in this franchise. would love to see a new primal rage.
I've been saying this
And probably some representation in MK11
Warner Bros. Does own Rampage
There was one in development but briefly. The Gods were going to be humanized in the sequel
jeez, that'd be amazing.

I own the PlayStation version of Primal Rage. Sure it has a lotta loading times but it plays like the arcade version.

Great video, loved the 'pause' bit.
One of the most useless 'cheats' I've ever seen in a game. Guess good for taken screen shots.
Thanks! I suppose it works for screen shots.
Yeah, that's exactly what it's for. It's a nice give to magazines, etc. of the time.
It's a shame Primal Rage 2 was cancelled. Wonder if the hint is Beauty and the Beast.
ur videos keep getting better!!! thanks for the great entertainment. BTW... jersey gamers rule!

hey been watching your show for a few years but I gotta ask a question why are you holding a 360 controller and not a Sega Genesis one like I said still like the show
yeah also wondering if you used an emulator? great video! by the way

Great episode, guys! I look forward to every one. Keep it up! :)
Thanks!
I've asked this in one of your other videos and I'll ask again why does Dan use an Xbox 360 controller and not a Sega genesis controller?
Justin A If that was true then they wouldn't need donations. Also they showed the genesis cartridge as well.

Ok...for those wondering why Dan is holding a 360 controller it's honestly to see who's paying attention, it's for comedic effect.
He's done it before in past videos where he holds a Sega controller then 360 in one scene & switches back to Sega, gotta watch the detail to videos ;)
And yes, we like to throw in a random controller from time to time.
Please do R-Type III vs. Thunder Force. That'd make my day.
Ah but the MD version has a golden shower so there! Erm...yeah I guess Greg is correct. 😒
The call back to the no lives joke in Revolution X was funny as well.
Screen shots with out the paused on the screen 📺 is a nice feature for a nich few
