I remember this game in my local arcade when i was a kid. It was almost always empty because most people were playing SF2 and MK then later Samurai Shodown and Killer Instinct. I think maybe it was because of the control scheme because the graphics look good and actually holds up.

Not sure but I think I'm it's #1 fan. I have every home version boxed including Tiger Electronics R-ZONE. Action figures in the box from when I bought them in 1994, all the rage CD, the book Primal Rage the Avatars, comic series. My Crown Jewel is my Arcade1up wrapped with Primal Rage decals and a real arcade board. Full arcade machine is just to big. Thank you so much for honoring my favorite game.

Huge dinosaur fan when this released. My friend told me about it and I ran to the local University to visit their arcade. I spent over $20 in quarters just that one day. I reached the end of the game I was quite irritated that there wasn't a final boss. Once my awe of the game faded a bit, I hated the fact that there were 2 gorilla characters, as well as Sauron and Diablo seeming too similar. To me I always felt that this game only really had 5 characters.

I think it would have been funny if instead of just censoring the "Golden Shower" finisher, the developers of the SNES version subverted expectations by having an actual golden shower, as in the bathroom fixture, fall on your defeated opponent. It would have been a lot more creative than what we ended up getting.

  • @Larry

It is bizarre they never thought to include any bosses in the game. once you beat all the dinosaurs, the game ends, that's it. Could have really done with a huge badass dinosaur, maybe a giant Goro-esque mutant one or something.
Also, totally should have had the monsters from Rampage as hidden characters in the game!

They had plans for a final boss encounter. Between the cost of the models they digitized, and the notoriously time consuming process of stop motion animation, they must've opted for an endurance round as a quick fix solution instead.

@@wilverbal It was for a little while. At my local arcade the machine would have around 10 people surrounding it to watch 2 players play it, waiting to play the winner. Fights almost would break out because everyone wanted to be the Primal Rage champion. But that lasted for a little while. After that everyone separated and went back to SF, MK, Tekken, Virtua Fighter and other arcade games. But for those few weeks Primal Rage was #1.

The control scheme also works in Street Fighter 2, and is a technique called negative edging. T Hawk uses this well, as his 360 throw doesn’t have a whiff animation. as long as the punch buttons are held ahead of time, the 360 can be spun on the joystick, then the punch button can be let go. The throw will either come out, or t hawk will just block. In essence, you can block while inputting the move, making it completely safe.

Wow this is some video. When I first seen primal rage I thought it was mind blowing back in the day. it was a fun arcade game to play. As you mentioned However the favorite part for me for primal rage is how the company encrypted it so well that they themselves when trying to release it for arcade treasures 2 couldn't even decrypt their own code. I always found that funny that no one knew how to decrypt it. I believe to this day MAME was never able to crack this code. When I was on the forums at the time quite a few years ago they asked quite a few people who were involved with the game to see if the code could be fully cracked but no one seemed to remember how to do it 🤷🏼‍♂️ One of the very interesting aspects of this game was that story in my opinion. So unfortunately it's possible that the original game code could forever be lost or until somebody comes up with the actual code.

From what I was able to gather Dennis Harper was the one who designed the encryption because of all the counterfeit boards being produced overseas so he made it as difficult as possible. When people asked him To decrypt it (even people from the Mame emulator development team) he was being really cagey and wouldn't offer up any advice. Perhaps he forgot or he just doesn't want people to know. I'm glad you enjoyed the video regardless

_Primal Rage_ was my absolute favorite arcade game from 90's, although I was just a kid mashing buttons with no idea how to perform any of the special attacks. Still, it had giant dinosaur-esque monsters fighting over a post-apocalyptic Earth and that was more than enough to keep me hooked on it.
Fast forward to the Covid lockdown where, feeling nostalgic for simpler childhood times, I looked up _Primal Rage_ playthroughs and found my love for this game returning with a vengeance. One particular player was pulling of attacks and combos I never could. I also discovered the ability to eat worshippers and all the various endings (something young me didn't even know existed).
Those playthroughs just made me even more curious about the game's creation and other background material. The more I discovered the more it made me realize this game has all the elements for an amazing modern remake. Not only could the game mechanics be refined and expanded (like worshippers playing a more active role in battle) but the lore and characters fleshed out to give the neo-prehistoric world more substance. For instance, show Sauron's tribe serving up live human sacrifices to their patron god like professional chefs presenting their dishes with flair. Or have the tribes of Blizzard and Armadon be conditional allies that focus on spiritual enlightenment and restoration of the best parts of the old world. Maybe include a _Mortal Kombat_ style story mode to flesh out the gods and their histories and interactions with one another.
But these are just the thoughts of a guy who still thinks giant monsters fighting is really awesome and would love to see them come back under the right game developers. Fingers crossed it isn't just a fantasy of mine.

Primal Rage wasn't the best fighting game but I enjoy it for what it was. Even though Part 2 was canceled, Galloping Ghost Arcades in Illinois has it. I remember reading an issue of Gamepro magazine about that woman who was so upset when her son did Chaos's Golden Shower fatality she did what she could did get this game off the market. Crazy fun times. Lol

I STILL can't figure out how to play this game properly... the commands for the moves are just ridiculous!

I have only experienced the SNES version as a kid and loved it.They didn't have it on arcade where I lived. Later on as a late teen I got the Midway Arcade Treasures with this game on it and was pleasantly surprised on how the arcade version was so much better and getting to play this version finely on the GameCube. The SNES version really held up on its own really well in my opinion. It was truly amazing what the SNES could do pushed to its limits at the time.

I saw PR2 at that Golf Land. It did exist, and I never saw it at another arcade I went to. Even the big Pac-Man Arcade in Pasadena Ca, around that same time didn't have it. I always wanted this game to be revistied in this day and age. I wasn't a player of PR but I always enjoyed watching the guys who could play it well. I was a SF and MK player. PR's control scheme was nuts to me. Fun as hell to be around though.

The major flaw of Primal Rage is that once the novelty of a prehistoric/dinosaur fighting game wore off, its lacklustre gameplay mechanics were exposed and laid bare for all to see. In my local arcade back in the day, SF2 and KI were king on a consistent basis with huge lineups... but after the first few months, Primal Rage just gathered dust in comparison. I REALLY wanted to like Primal Rage but it's just a shallow fighting game with a dinosaur gimmick.
