Used as a camp/kitchen knife it’s really great for the price. Personally I don’t use any of my knives as prybars or hang 45# of weight on the handle. I have other BPS kinives and other brands that have scandi grinds that are used for light wood kprocessing and other camp chores. Saws and small heavy machete type blades are used for the heavier wood work. It was interesting to see the knife pressed to its limits though.

I've had the Savage for about a year, and yes it is a great knife, either in the kitchen or the camp. I took the handle scales off of mine and then blued the whole knife with Bichwood Cassey Super Blue. Worked great, and the finish matches the sheath. As for the sheath. If you find it to be too tight. Soak it in Boiled Linseed Oil, then insert the knife and set it aside for about a week. When it dries it will be a a nice fit, not to tight, not too loose. Thats how I handled mine. Now the leather sheath is also water proof.

I looked at this model guessing about a year or so ago. It looked like a high value to cost ratio general purpose knife in that size range with a full flat grind. As far as BPS knives go I have and enjoy using their rendition of the Ray Mears design. I decided based on the specs regarding thickness of the Steel stock and Steel type against the purchase of this Skinner / Camp kitchen knife. I'm glad to see you review this as it was indicative of the very reasons I did not purchase it . I will relate the 1066 Steel patinas nicely. I'll also say that the BPS sheath is quite nice, especially at the asking prices

It's a great camp kitchen knife and light duty camp chores type things. Just not a heavy duty knife you can beat the snot out of. For the price, it's a great value as long as you understand it's limitations. Good looking too.

Great vid. I have the version with black bog-oak scales. I have had this knife for over a year and enjoy using it as a food prep and camp knife. It simply isn't a survival or bushcraft knife as most define those terms. BPS has more robust and thicker scandi-grind knives that excel there.

I have 1 BPS knife (Adventurer) , that I have had several years now. it will never replace my TOPS BoB, or other knives of that size, but it has been in use from time to time. often as the knife I let others use when they don't have a camp knife. they are well made for the price point, and the one I have has held up to light/moderate use over several trips to the woods.

I have the Adventurer and love it. The scales on mine were perfectly flush with the tang. Looking at their other knives have to say I’m really impressed and may wind up with the whole collection. Taking into account the leather sheath, the full tang, the wood scales, and the firesteels that some of them come with, I think they are the best value in fixed blades. Yes, better than Mora.

I agree they are great knives to customize. I cold blued one of them, did a vinegar patina on another. I put g10 liners under the wooden scales of all of them. If you don't mind touching up an edge fairly regularly, these are great to use.

OK I'm an admitted knife junkie have been since i was a kid. Ive grown up camping hunting and living in the outdoors, i even own a cabin in the sierra Nevada mountains, i have never carved a spoon, or made a wooden canoe, made underwear out of a deer hide, and the only knife i ever broke was a schrade hunting knife that fell out of my sheath and landed on granite rock and snapped in half. so now that that's out of the way i have purchased more knives based on your reviews in the last 3 months that the last 40 years. the average kid or camper may be even a hunter will never destroy that knife or most other sub $100. knives. keep it up and knife on...

  • @swingbelly

For the price, BPS knives are an excellent choice. Well made and extremely sharp out of the box. However, finish quality, especially the symmetry of the handle is often hit and miss. Sometimes a slightly higher profile on one side than the other. Yes, the sheaths are of very good quality but some in cases do not hold the knife snuggly. Overall, they are a decent knive at a decent price. I have never believed that a knife should double as a hatch or an axe ie. battoning wood. Completely different tools. Thanks for the videos. Very detailed, non-biased and informative.

I may get one eventually. I have 3 of their other knives. I do love carbon and flat grinds. Got 30 year old Green Rivers in the kitchen and love the natural patina that has grown on them. BPS knives use really nice leather for knives in their price range. Think of 1066 as a bargain steel, get a nice ceramic rod to touch up the edges before they get sharpening stone dull. Holy heck, I got to get one of the DBK Bushmate, those look sweet and the DBK boys know their knives.

Look at it from a different point of view. Buy the sheath and get the knife as a bonus for those people who have negative comments about the knife. The handles are beyond Oak. They are BOG Oak. From Oak tree's that died, fell over into a bog and then over the years the wood was very well preserved. To the point that furniture makes and stringed instrument makes fight over it. Its very dense and stable. I just sanded the ones on my knife then treated them with boiled Linseed Oil. They look great against the blued blade.

Thanks Aaron for the review. I like the way that it looks and the great sheath. Bummer about the steel though. In this price range I'd stick to a Mora like a bush black or kansbol or something. G'day Aaron, reminds me a bit of the Jarosz Turok, though that one was a high sabre in 1095 Cro van and of course, priced accordingly. Mind you not everyone can, or wants, to pay bigger dollars for a 'camp knife" so it has a place I reckon, and as you said with the proviso of having other tools for the HD tasks. I sure wouldn't be taking it anywhere away from a car camping site or backyard as examples, .... i.e. you'd be mad to bet your life on it.
Btw; I like the standardised testing mate and I reckon its more than fair, with what looks to be a relatively soft pine species. I suspect even with the clamp/sandbag test there will be some relief with deformation of the timber across the blade, .... are you finding that ? Cheers Duke.

Hi Aaron . I got one a few months back I didn't keep it long, although I loved it and it was mostly what I was looking for. My findings mirrors yours. The reason I didn't keep it was even though the sheath was awesome it was so tight the spine lined up to the back inside or the sheath revealed that the edge was right at the stitching on the welt, I felt it was just a matter of time till I cut through the stitching. I was very torn sending it back and still am. Thanks

Its easy to make the knife fit the sheath better. Just soak the knife sheath in Boiled Linseed Oil. insert the knife a few times, then with knife in the sheath, set it aside in a warm dry place, to dry. When it does you will not only have a sheath that fits nicely, but is now water proofed. I've had my Savage for about a year now with no sheath problems.

Im still am not happy about returning it because the grinds and handle where symmetrical, Bps does sell the same size sheath reasonably priced just a different color, if it was an 1/8" wider I would have kept it . I think BPS knives are great value for money. You usually have a ferrocerium rod included with the deal, which ups the value for money. In the UK there are no import taxes or customs duty on purchases coming from Ukraine (to help their war efforts) which makes it cheaper than it would normally be. Keep it well oiled or Vaselined and you'll have no problems with rust.

One personal issue I have is that people keep talking about budget blades and how they're great because if you lose them they don't cost you that much but for a lot of us when we buy a knife we intend to keep it forever and not toss it haphazardly into our vehicles or to replace a knife because we want to avoid the shame of using a so-called budget blade even here in these comments we have people complaining about knives that cost $100 a piece. Sometimes it seems like we have to pay a lot of money for what people consider good quality and yet I'm running around with a gerber Scout that cost less than $30 and has lasted me about 10 years and it still working. And the fact is that's some of the Schrades from A couple of years ago were comparable to others that cost twice as much and you yourself Aaron have done a lot of videos on less expensive knives that offered great performance. We all appreciate the fact that if we pay a little more that we get something better but I often wonder if we're not just paying more because somebody can get away with charging us or convincing us that their brand is superior to another

There is a double edged sword that. Have use $40 and $400 knives there is a difference in quality you feel. But a working knife is often all you need.

Good review showing the pros and cons. To answer your question. No, this is not the best budget camp knife. The profile and thin full flat blade suggests a small chefs knife for in the field, but it's made of 1066 carbon steel. You'll spend more time cleaning the knife than actual cooking. The patina will rub off on your food. So for this it should be stainless steel and even a simple 12C27 steel will not dull that fast. For other camp chores it's obviously to thin and a full flat grind has no advantage. For this a thicker saber or scandi grind is more useful and a not so wide blade shape. So it's cheap for what you get but I have no clue who this knife is for? And for less money you can buy a Hultafors GK for the rougher work and a Mora Companion for the food part and still save 10 dollar. If you want to bring just one budget knife the Mora Companion HD in stainless steel comes to mind and save 20 dollar.

How grippy is that wood handle? I really prefer g10 or micarta. Some Amazon reviews said the sheath was actually designed for another one of their knives, and the knife was cutting the sheath. What do YOU think? Honestly, it looks great for $40! I would rather buy from and support Ukraine rather than China ANY day also.

Personally I prefer the adventurer. Now they make one designed by the DBK boys . It’s $50 called Bushmate.
But I’ve had the adventurer for years it’s a great knife. 1066 is Russian spring steel like American 5160.
