My favorite nirvana song. Such a powerful song. And a relatively clean solo which is rare for Nirvana. Favorite song from my favorite band :)
It's catchy and cool... Pretty cynical though... I'm not sure that the lyrics are as profound as they want to be.
Very good song
@@chrisdriver7776Kurt Cobain's lyrics tend to be completely up to interpretation. He would write something based on a subject that he chose for the song, but he writes it in a way that can be interpreted by so many different ways. You can get a song that you'll listen for the first time and think he's talking about politics or drug use, but ends up being about a eating fish, planting a house and building a tree or something.
It's not supposed to be taken so serious as many people do, you're free to interpret the lyrics however you want. At the end of the day, that's what Kurt Cobain and his punk rock philosophies were all about, freedom.
@@deviousraul Yeah, Kurt Cobain was definitely a talent, and I think Nirvana is awesome in small doses... But ultimately his music is characterized by too much cynicism/nihilism/despair for me to listen very often, or to find a deep connection.
Partially for these reasons, I've always preferred Vedder, who managed to strike a magical balance between aggressiveness, indignance, without ever losing touch with at least a hope and stubborn fight for something better.
@@chrisdriver7776 that's good for you man, really. Eddie Vedder's stuff can be so dark and painful aswell, but in the end his enlightned persona always stands out, which in some way can actually be healthy, there is hope in his music.
Kurt Cobain's art is intriguing and can be fascinating, but is so far from being healty. Going down that rabbit hole at 14 years old and trapping yourself in that bubble and you find that to be a way to cope with everything bad going on in your life at the time... years later I can tell that made me no good, apart from keeping me in a false sense of "comfort zone".
When I first listened to the album Ten, it kind of made me walk away from Nirvana for some time and I could feel the difference, it's tremendous.
I love everything about this song, David. I am happy with the score and glad you enjoyed it.
Please react Nirvana - Serve the Servants (with lirycs). Greetings from Brazil!
I remember picking up my guitar 🎸 and listening to this song over and over to learn the Chords.. I loved playing it and singing it ❤
The song was recorded 4 different times with 2 different drummers.. 1st two with chad channing, 2nd two with dave grohl...
The song was going to be released on in utero album but instead they donated it to the NO ALTERNATIVE (was an album for aids awareness/research) album it was an unlisted track on the album...
Kurt was obsessed with this song and they recorded it many times. He was never happy about it, so it never saw the light of day trough a record album.
Dam I want to listen to more Nirvana now 😂 2 great songs that come to mind on that Box Set was “Verse Chorus Verse” and “Old Age” 🔥 ❤
The band did record a number of different versions of this tune, which was described as “elusive” in their official bio. I wound up hearing one of those myself, from someone who had a real rough demo rendition of it on a cassette. To my own ears, this sounds like the version they recorded with Steve Albini, who helmed their final studio album ‘In Utero’. And I say that because I hear the same Steve Albini/In Utero drum sound, specifically on the snare and kick. That was also the version added as a hidden track on the ‘No Alternative’ comp, from 1993, I believe. I think the band knew that if their song was listed it would eat up all the attention people gave that compilation. One last note is that of course there were different lyrics to different versions. I know you’re not a lyrics guy. But here the third and final verse starts with “And if you fool yourself…” While on the very rough demo I heard on cassette, it began with “And if you kill yourself.”
Really surprised the person who requested this put forward this version. There's a completely mixed version on the In Utero deluxe.
Nirvana has been my favorite band since I was a child, and inspired me to pick up a guitar and sing. Literally by watching Kurt's and listening. For years people ask what is your favorite song? I have to say it may be this finally. The simplicity, the tone, the solo and ever moving basslines are just all encompassing. The fact that Kurt was never really satisfied with it as a songwriter I can completely identify with. I love every version of it.
Kurt's ear was mightier than the shred sword. And the greatest to downplay his own talent.
Definitely give Mexican Seafood by Nirvana a listen, its one of their more complex songs
I really like the way you analyze songs.
Your videos are very entertaining.
Thank you, again from Belgium
Man I remember when that Box Set came out .. I drove so fast to the target by my house as soon as I got out of work… great songs on there .. Sappy was one of my favorite songs and I knew it was in that Box Set ❤
An amazing review like always. Great video!
Id like to file a formal correction. Kurt was a good guitar player. He wrote these idelible riffs and uncanny and unnatural melodies. Might be easy for other players to replicate, but he wrote them. Maybe he didn't have the technical prowess of the players you mentioned, but he was never striving for that. He was a punk rocker, it's about real feeling and tge guitar was him screaming his rage, discord and unrest.
This was absolutely a demo, the full finished and remixed version is on the deluxe edition of in utero, and it's honestly a lot better that this version. The solo on sappy is absolutely my favorite nirvana solo, and it's really fun to play.
This is the version from the deluxe edition
Same recording at least. Don't know about the mix.
@@skywipe1949 Same recording, you're right about that, but the "other" version on in utero is definitely remixed.
@@apollo_gen Yeah, it hadn't occurred to me there, but the one on the deluxe edition is called the 2013 mix.
@@skywipe1949 This is the 'polished' version. The best version is the Nevermind sessions or 'Smart Sessions' which is also a demo. If your complaining about Nirvana not being produced enough.........you dont get it.
If you're reacting to Sappy, you might react to another song by them called: "Oh The Guilt".
The In Utero version of this is it i think is near studio produced
Yeh, I don't think Sappy ever went beyond a demo.
My favorite of their early songs is Sliver.
It was finished. It was released on the "No Alternative" compilation under the title "Verse Chorus Verse"
completely different song@@dathorndike4908
In fact it was recorded throughout their era of 3 studio albums! I actually prefer his home recording of sad/sappy. I can’t fathom why he was never happy enough to put it on an album, yet he kept coming back to it
Love your reactions and I’ll be honest I’m not into a lot of the music on your channel tho I have discovered a few songs I dig. It’s always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on some tunes I do like and know well. Very entertaining and thoughtful as always.
yeah theres other versions of the song that r obviously mixed and produced different so yeah. but the solo kurt acoustic version of sappy and drain you r my favourite songs from nirvana
great review! very enjoyable vid and song.
One of my favourite Nirvana songs, thanks for your reaction 😊
There are different versions of this and I like this one and the Smart Studio version the best.
It really sounds like a Demo, as it seems Kurt was still figuring out how the song should sound (hence the many different versions over the years).
Not many reactors did a reaction to this song, glad you did it 😄
You should listen to the offspring - come out and play or love buzz by nirvana.. Great video btw, watching from Portugal
This track is interesting because Kurt was never fully satisfied with song, there was something about it that it just wasn't perfect to him no matter what him or the band did, it was never released on an official full length. He worked on it a lot and just wasn't sure what to do with it, he felt that it just wasn't complete and honestly I kind of get that feeling too. It's a really good tune but it almost feels like there's something missing, but it does what it needs to do and it fits it's purpose.
I love Sappy. I also feel like something is missing from it, yet at the same time there's something oddly endearing about the riff and vocal melody.
Despite Kurt not being satisfied with it, I think Sappy is still a decent example of his songwriting. Someone else could come up with the riffs in the song, but there are few, if any apart from Kurt that would choose to sing those notes over them.
I remember the first time I heard this song it was when everyone was starting to share music illegally online.. the internet wasn’t nearly as great as today .. I would make mixes on CDs 💿 and I always put this song on them 😂my friend asked me to make him a CD wit Sappy on it 23 times 😂 just in case it got scratched and he would still be able to listen to it 😂
best song ever 💪 j'adore ce son il est dans mon top 5
I love this song! It's the Beatles for the 90s
Very basic yet it has a charm. I agree with your take on it DH
This was absolutely recorded during the in Utero sessions. Kurt wasn't ever quite happy with it, and that's why it was left off the album.
It was a scratch take during the In Utero sessions but ultimately was scraped last minute. The reason this song is so popular amongst Nirvana fans is not only because the topic his lyrics speak on but because it dates back to the late 80's when the band was just starting out. There's even a demo from 1990. However as much as it's a great song he didn't think it would fit on any of their albums. So for now all we have of the song is demos, live shows and this scratch take.
Dude- It was finished. It was released on the "No Alternative" compilation under the title "Verse Chorus Verse"
Favorite song from Nirvana is Drain You.
Sir, you are very musically erudite. Thanks for the reaction.
Nirvana "Polly" Unplugged
un abrazo desde Chile!!
Sappy (1990) is the best version 😇
It's perfect imperfection. But Nirvana gets to mention to beat it. It's Nirvana. Unplugged.
Best Kurt solo Pennyroyal Tea live @ Toronto 1991
It is a demo from 1989, the last version was released in 1993 with in utero🤧
The song was going to be released on in utero album but instead they donated it to the NO ALTERNATIVE (was an album for aids awareness/research) album it was an unlisted track on the album...
@@williamdrake6711 Oh, yeah, in utero sessions*
Beauty song
Nice reaction and explanation for the score as always! Recently I've been going through the Gorillaz discography, have you any reactions of them at all in the queue?
None that I'm aware of.
Actually kurt was more in to art he said it himself on an interview and was easy for him to express it on music and what he had in mind
I did a quick search, but it didn't seem like LoveBites 'Stand and river' had been reviewed yet.
Please.
(You can ignore it if you have already listened to it and have not made it into a video.)
I think it's in the que.
Sliver, serve the servantes
It was a demo
🧐 I feelin`
Feels demo to me too. I've heard much stronger versions. Kurt's voice is louder and the instruments pop and are sharper. Crucial to its 60s "pop" feel.
For a sloppy but great solo go for In Bloom or Serve The Servants. You don't have to review those but listen to them and you'll have a good idea of what they're all about.
The song in your video does sound muffled, strange I don't get the same feeling from the original video you mentioned in the description
Good
I feel like Nirvana's music isn't _supposed_ to be played "right." Playing it "right" feels _wrong_ on a deep, fundamental level. The chords aren't supposed to be right, the vocals aren't supposed to be pitch-perfect, even the lyrics aren't really supposed to be the same each time a song is played. These aren't songs _about_ being "right." They're about being _wrong,_ and I think this is a great song to demonstrate that with-- it's a song all about that illusion of perfection and of the pain we put ourselves through to sustain it in the blind hope that if we debase ourselves enough for the amusement of others, someday it might actually be true. But it never _will_ be true. The _truth_ is we're trapped in a jar, wallowing in shit, stuck in a laundry room where we were never meant to be. Decaying city of flesh, broken clock ringing forever on hours that never change, _and we need to get out._ If the note is "wrong" but it sounds good, why are we calling it "wrong?" If we're always "happy" but everything hurts, why are we calling it "happy?" When we stop lying to ourselves about it, maybe then we'll actually be able to break free from it.

You should listen to Oh The Guilt by them, and Heart-Shaped Box
Nintendo 64!
I really thought you would hate this song. It always seemed to me like a song to brood to which isn't your thing it seems like. I thought for sure you would get bored and suffer through it.
Nirvana - Tourette's 😁
