There's a ghost that grows inside of us Damaged in the making And there's a hunt sprung from necessity Elliptical and drowned Where the moving quiet of our insomnia Offers up each thought There's a luminous field of grey inertia And obsidian dreams Burned all the way down Arabesque ink wandering Winds itself around our ovate dreams We seem to speak only in the imprecise geometries Of black volcanic sands Huge, impossibly regular shapes Of rutted charcoal rocks hover above us As if waiting We do not live We are lived Pessimism The last refuge of hope From a blurred horizon Quiet black basalt pools Bore into the rocks And our own patiently withering bones Slumbering swells of a salt-borne amnesia Course through our fibrous limbs Scorched, wandering Brine secretes from every pore The luminous point where logic becomes contemplation Lost in thought, dreamless sleep, adrift in deep space A black glow in the deepest sleepwalking seas Around you this night, a thousand million firefly anatomies Breathe in and out in their slow burning, liturgical glow Impersonal sadness, to become overgrown, like a ruin
Some of the commentary below would suggest that many have not listened to the whole album. I wasn’t sure about this song the first time I listened to it, and I’ll grant you it is the weirdest/out of character song on the album, but in the context of the album, it fits, and offers a nice change of pace. The rest of the album features plenty of aggression and raw ATG sound, with some nice proggy elements to complement that sound rather than move entirely in that direction (which would ruin them as a band, IMO). Check out “Touched By The White Hands of Death” if you haven’t already. Anyway, I think it’s an excellent record as a whole.
Probably my favorite At the Gates album. Almost all metal bands have either kept beating the dead horse of their original sound, or gone so 'progressive' that they aren't recognizable as metal - yet ATG are able to create new and interesting directions in their music while retaining their original identity. Truly one of the best bands of this generation
I would have never imagined they make a music video to this song. It's a great intermission between all the heavy songs, but to be honest I would have loved more songs like The Paradox.
yeah this is the song i have been waiting this winter at last found the solace... Spoken Word really suited the song...Oh my gosh end of the song is brain ripping
Sounds like a ode to the band edge of insanity since its like every melodic death metal band from swedens inspiration but new metal fans wouldnt know that. Thats the vibe i have from it, sounds alright.
Although the spoken word bit is cool they really should have saved this song for a side-project or B-side. Simply can't believe it's been chosen as a single :I
Soilwork...In Flames...Gotta add At the Gates now...Just went from metal, to something, to progressive something, to stuff I don't listen to anymore =/
@@rcanar yes, I feel that they are lost their way .. beside that, I personally don't like the singer's voice.. They need a long vacation to figure out which way they should follow ... They are completely lost.
@@newsbeats6041 .. and the song is very annoying, I tried to listen again to give them a chance.. I couldn't, unfortunately.. they should do something instead of trying to copy other bands stupidly..

This song and the album just tells us what At the Gates has - growth.
Girth?
There's a ghost that grows inside of us
Damaged in the making
And there's a hunt sprung from necessity
Elliptical and drowned
Where the moving quiet of our insomnia
Offers up each thought
There's a luminous field of grey inertia
And obsidian dreams
Burned all the way down
Arabesque ink wandering
Winds itself around our ovate dreams
We seem to speak only in the imprecise geometries
Of black volcanic sands
Huge, impossibly regular shapes
Of rutted charcoal rocks hover above us
As if waiting
We do not live
We are lived
Pessimism
The last refuge of hope
From a blurred horizon
Quiet black basalt pools
Bore into the rocks
And our own patiently withering bones
Slumbering swells of a salt-borne amnesia
Course through our fibrous limbs
Scorched, wandering
Brine secretes from every pore
The luminous point where logic becomes contemplation
Lost in thought, dreamless sleep, adrift in deep space
A black glow in the deepest sleepwalking seas
Around you this night, a thousand million firefly anatomies
Breathe in and out in their slow burning, liturgical glow
Impersonal sadness, to become overgrown, like a ruin
One of my favorite tracks from this stellar album!!
Love this song. Fantastic album.!!!
Brooding. Catchy. Dissonant. Everything I love in a song.
👉MAGNIFICENT👈 At The Gates. Awesome job❗️
Loved the last album, it showed that they are evolving their sound and are not stuck in the same vibe.

Works out perfectly. Have always been loving ATGs‘ melancholy 🌳
LOVE IT! GREAT SONG GREAT VIDEO. I must say one of their best song to date
Always loved Tompas vocals.

Brilliant video for a brilliant song from a brilliant album. Bravo!
Leave it to the people who made the greatest metal album of the 90's to make the greatest post-metal album of the 2020's.

I LOVE AT THE GATES
Parece un rock progresivo, haciendo olvidar por un instante la brutalidad de sus letras y riffs.
Poesia! Masterwork! 👍🤘

Spoken Word really suited the song...Oh my gosh end of the song is brain ripping

How long did he go not screaming? This album sounds like he wasn't screaming for a while right?

Eugene Thacker 💀
Doing what Mao Morta were doing 20 years ago...
Question everything.
ooooof
rust cohle vibes
wtf happened to at the gates?
More like "The great deceiver" than ATG......I think
Meh. It's not bad but doesn't make me want to buy the album.
Although the spoken word bit is cool they really should have saved this song for a side-project or B-side. Simply can't believe it's been chosen as a single :I
Nojoda que verga es esta pues?!
some cool stuff on this album but they forgot to be aggressive. dunno why they came back to give us stuff like this.
Largely a vaste of Tompa's voice, I'm not digging this one, sorry.
Soilwork...In Flames...Gotta add At the Gates now...Just went from metal, to something, to progressive something, to stuff I don't listen to anymore =/
Too much monotony.
`cause Bjorler chemistry is no more
@@rcanar yes, I feel that they are lost their way .. beside that, I personally don't like the singer's voice..

Agreed sadly
