I’m obsessed with growing potatoes. I use the whole potato. It’s just more energy given to the plant. Have used as small as a golf ball. I also use a 6-24-24 fertilizer. My dirt mix is composted leaves, grass and wood chips.

I wish I had seen this before I planted my potatoes. I would have tried this but maybe next year... I finally figured out how to put together my 3 small raised beds so tomorrow I'll be planting other veggies. I'm so glad it's finally nice outside. It sure was a wierd winter. Especially for up north in Wisconsin. I have peppers, tomatoes, onions, carrots, beets, and broccoli to plant. I couldn't be happier.

@@littlehummingbird1015 Seriously was disappointed, just so little for the table. Appalachian homestead with Patera did some la st year as an experiment and those results were poor as well. So it wasnt just us. This time I'm doing a method using straw that I saw, people got bigger yields doing that.

I'm already fighting the potato bugs down here in Mass. I've planted my 1st bunch around St. Pats day and the 2nd batch around tax day in April. All 16 buckets and grow bags have awesome green growth. One even has a flower which I'm told means it's creating Tubers!

I buy Organic potatoes to use from the Supermarket. Even at $4 something it's cheaper and more then Seed potatoes. This year was the 1st year I cut any. I heard you get bigger yet smaller yields that way. Good luck to you this Summer.

I watched a video about a month ago, a guy from England plants his potatoes in a box. On a concrete sidewalk!! After 60 days, he simply lifted the box with all kinds of potatoes falling out! So I tried it. After about 3 weeks I have lovely green leaves in the top and looking good. Can't wait for harvest. It was so easy!

Now this is an interesting idea for sure! Thank you very much for sharing. I will try this next year.
Greetings from the land of ice and snow (middle of Alaska) 😎☕️ PRO TIP: On the cut exposed side of your potato, put cornstarch on a pan or plate, and set the cut side on on the cornstarch for about 5 minutes. And plant as you would.
I did this last year for my first potato proof of concept grow bag
garden. Average yield per bag was 13 to 20 potatoes each grow bag.
This year, I am doing a 4 foot by 4 foot by 4 foot potato box. The math indicates I will get approximately 250-300 pounds. So we we will see.

My hubby had too many potatoes for his garden patch so I took what was left and threw them on the ground inside a fence ring, then I covered them with dead leaves and some soil. As they grown I add more leaves and soil. They seem to be Extremely healthy and look as good as the potatoes I have growing in 100% soil. I'm excited to see how they turn out when it's time to dig them.

A funny/not-so-funny story: I've seen several versions of potato towers/tubs in the past few years. Last year I decided to to make my own "tower" out of an old burn barrel in which the bottom had rusted out. I layered in some compost and soil added three sprouting potato pieces and covered them with more soil and compost. As the potato plants grew over the summer, I continued to add more soil and compost. Late summer, I noticed a tomato hornworm had decimated much of the foiliage. However, I continued to water the plants, hoping they'd recover. After about 3 weeks, it was apparent that there would be no new leaves to help pototoes grow under the soil. Rather than dump the barrel, I reached my hand down inside the soil to feel around for tubers. It took only about 5 seconds to realize that my barrel was populated by fire ants! I, subsequently dumped the barrel, only to find not a single potato. Not. A. One. BUT... I had a couple of healthy-looking plants until the tomato hornworm did them in. And, in the end, I got a painful reminder not to stick my hand and arm into unknown territory here in the South. Hopefully, anyone who tries the "tower" method will get better mileage than did I !!
