Love this. But, I guess I don't need a stick. If I did, this would be AWESOME! Sweet Potatoes were my first success after Lettuce and Spinach (I know...easy) But, I had NEVER grown food before and I was so proud of my sweet potatoes. I got a pallet wood box/shelf thing discarded by Lowe's that they displayed cactus and succulents in. It was 3 x 5 x 2 feet deep. I covered it with landscaping fabric filled it with compost and soil. Planted 6 slips. I got 72lbs. of potatoes my first year. :D Again, i was so proud. And it gave me the motivation to keep going and trying new things whether I had the "space" or not. I plant them the first of July and harvest them on Halloween. (Zone 7a) Perfect timing for Thanksgiving!! From my crop last year, I still have 8 left. They keep and store so well. If I can grow them anyone can. So, if anyone out there hasn't tried...DO IT. It's a great morale booster for a new gardener.

+theIAMofME Yes, they are easy to grow and do produce a lot. Plus they are good in so many ways. We still have a few that we dug up last summer. They do keep well. Thanks.

+theIAMofME thank you for the info... me and my dad have been gardening during summers for a few years since moving here to CT(also Zone 7a)... we get a great yield of Tomatoes, Chilli peppers, Eggplant , Okra , Zucchini and even some other plants from our native country of India.
we found some sweet potato slips for a cheap price at Home Depot and decided to try and grow them here. Just planted them in a raised bed i created in my garden today. i have a whole rack of slips left and will try to grow some in containers too. hope it works out :)

I just want to thank you for this video. This was the first year I've considered planting sweet potatoes. The potatoes have provided the most amazing slips, but I have been procrastinating because I was dreading crawling through the entire garden to get them in the ground. Now, thanks to this video, I do not have to procrastinate ever again because you taught me that I do not have to even bend over to plant them. Thank you so much!

You just have to dig it and move it around, and go through the seemingly mountainous task of checking the soil, and making sure it's right to grow, with enough plant food, chemical balance and PH balance it needs.. for sweet potatoes the soil needs to have sand..

Hello Danny. I am gardening in the UK where it tends not to be as warm as where you are. I am going to have a shot at growing sweet potatoes from slips in a greenhouse. From planting the slip, how many weeks until harvest and how will I know when it's time to harvest. I have watched this video a few times now. It's a pleasure to listen to someone that knows what they are talking about when it comes to growing stuff and can back it up with results. HGV.

Thanks for posting Danny and Wanda, couldn't help notice what great soil you have. It takes a pick and shovel to dig here. There's an adobe hacienda down road that's been there a couple hundred years. This clay makes good bricks. Glad to find that out about the need to amend it. There's a simple test where you take a jar, fill it with dirt and water, shake it, let it settle, and see how much clay there is compared to sand. Hope that helps someone. I was thinking about stacking used tires for a planter since I live in an apartment. Hope you mend soon, take care.

I've never grown slips before but I seem to have a green thumb with most things, so will try it with some organic pink Kumara (you guys call them sweet potato) got these from an organic store, never seen pink Kumara before, so I saved a couple. It almost looks like beetroot when roasted and has darker pink lines through it, anyone else seen these? Thanks again for all the info, just love your good old honest garden advise. I love the stick idea. I never would have thought of that. Now, if I can just remember that for next year. I wouldn't have thought of cutting the ends off the slips either so I'll have to tuck that information away for next year too. My sweet potatoes probably are doing anything this year. I still have some slips growing and if I can get a small greenhouse put up in the next few weeks I'm going to try growing them in there in buckets or grow bags and see what happens. I guess if it gets to cold I can bring them in the house and keep them by the wood stove where it will be nice and warm for them. I like to cook the leaves and eat them too. They're really good sauteed in olive oil with whatever spices you like in them.

Welcome to Deep South, we always get our draws or slips from planting sweet potatoes in dirt. We harvested over 600 lbs of sweet potatoes this year.
