Growing Potatoes / Hilling or Mounding Potatoes

  • We planted our seed potatoes 30 days ago already! As you can see they have not wasted any time, and we are at our first hilling point. We will do this a little at a time, every 2 weeks as the plants grow taller. Potatoes like to grow tubers from roots all up and down the tap root, so by adding more soil around the base, you are allowing your potatoes to grow more tubers toward the top, without risk of breaking the surface. You don't have to hill your potatoes, but doing so increases the yield from each plant, allows for larger tubers and contributes toward the overall health of your potato plant!

Perilous time we live in now. No one is coming to save you. No matter what method of gardening you use, the important thing in your life and priorities should be food production.
I hear and see so many people making excuses why they can't have a garden.
I lived in a second floor apartment and on my balcony I made a food wall on that balcony and grew vertically fruit and vegetables.
There will be no excuses when the shelves are empty except "I can't" when you wouldn't.
Thank you from Custer SD USA Black Hills mountains.
    Country folks can survive 🤠

Looky here, we've been watching you ever since you did that dance on the dock on HLC. THIS video is that point where you seem to be not only happy but at peace with your life and circumstances. And frankly my wife and I are happy that Miss Nina is settled. You've always done great work and it's a pleasure to bring into our home. Hell, we've followed you long enough, that says it all! Nevertheless, you find someone who is obviously on life's journey and to watch them work through all the challenges life brings and the grace and poise they acquire to handle those challenges as they settle in to becoming the positive role models they themselves could have used in their own youth. You are a credit Nina to all those you have learned from, both good and bad. Because I think you are one of those few who recognizes that the bad experiences were just as necessary as the good ones to shape the very lovely and beautiful woman you have become. Good bless you and yours...

That rain sure looks good. 104 today in south Texas. I've had less than 1 inch of rain for the year. I'm calling calf rope on raising any crops this yr. Dad said he will start digging potatoes in 10 days or so. When I'm dry here, he gets the perfect amount of rain for his gardens. Said he pulled 200 lbs of onions this week. Expecting around 500 lbs of new potatoes.

When I was younger and had a small garden. I did the same thing. But I also raised chickens for the eggs and would mix the chicken manure in with my soil as it is a great source of natural nitrogen. But I would let the manure compost for about 5 weeks to bleach out the ammonia before mixing it into the soil.

I've been following you and everyone from HLC. I'm in North Florida and use many similar gardening methods as you do. I normally don't comment, but saw an opportunity to help today. By the way on my suggestion on your beds you can also use 1 1/2 " pvc in the corners since it wont rot and you can pound in the ground. To help help keep them in place in case the pups run into them when they play.

Tip for y'all. I planted 3 types of organic potatoes this year. Most were looking amazing but since I'm in the East things aren't moving a long as fast as Nina's. However a few started to look almost like they were getting blight. I crushed up about (5) 81mg baby aspirins and put them in about a gallon of water in the sprayer and sprayed just the ones that looked like the leaves were turning brown. In less then a day they look much better. The aspirin pushes the plants immune system to kick into high gear. They said you can do this to Tomatoes, Potatoes, and Eggplants. On a side note Nina you can bury 90% of those tall potatoes. Just leave a little bit to continue reaching for the sun.

With store bought tatters there is a spray on them to inhibit growth, if soaked in water for a day fixes the problem. Remember when cutting with a knife-" cut towards your chum, never your thumb, you can get another chum but never another thumb "

That is right. Actually the larger potato plants needed to have been hilled several days ago before they got as big as they are now. No big deal though. They should still make potatoes. When you hill them you are creating a place for the actual potatoes to form and grow. If you wait too long it will cut down on production.

Hey, do you think maybe thinning out how many you have, they might have more room to grow more tatos? I don’t know, I haven’t don’t potatoes before, I thought that you put like 3 plants in a 6 g pot and that whole pot would end up being potatoes. I’m sure you’ve done this before, I just thought I’d suggest that when you said you are aware it’s a bit over crowded, sometimes making room for the garden really helps.
