- Berserk's Guts is an incredibly edgy character who has been through a lot, however his edge is far different than that of similar characters in other pieces of media be it anime, or manga.

IMHO "edgy" more means someone who acts more angsty than they have any right to be, just to look cool. Guts isn't edgy, he's a hurt man with a lot of problems.
Yeah it how Felix we know your brother died in duscar but why be rude to your father.
Did you just speak moon speak wtf
@@thean_hon Do you mean the response comment, or my original comment? I think the response is a reference I (we?) don't get. IDK what's wrong with mine, if that's what you mean! D:
Throttle Kitty nah yours is fine idk what the other dude just said
@@thean_hon Okay! I'm thinking it's just a reference we don't get XD
There's a reason why Guts is called "The Struggler" and he's still my favourite character in manga and anime. Also you might be right regarding another dark point in Guts's life, the Skull Knight appeared in a recent chapter and when he appears something monumental happens. Good video.
Berserk is an untapped goldmine when it comes to trying to gain viewership. Us strugglers are starved of content.
Remember Bagzerk? Content droughts can do... strange things to a fandom.
Hand it over.. that thing.. your berserk analysis content
I’m so glad someone said this, I find myself checking weekly for new berserk content because of how much I truly love it and am always delighted when I see a video from this channel. Thank you Boofire-san
@@yelvy_2252 hand it over that thing your gael reference
The final tragedy is that caska can’t even talk to him without going into a panic attack
She'll come around eventually, I hope. I'm glad she didn't fully recover after the corridor of dreams, that'd be unrealistic.
It also be awesome if she could gather enough strength to fight along with Guts against Griffith.
@@momokat4082 No she won't. Caska is the Sakura of Berserk - utter superficial trash.
Its ptsd time!
@@elimsyldog4858 Ha 😂 gotta disagree with you on that sista
@@elimsyldog4858 yes she is sakura, but from the fate haven's feel.
I think you missed Griffith's dreams speech as another moment of Gut's changing as a character.
And killing julius' son
@@justinlee3168
Yeah, it's hard to tell which one of them impacted him more since they both happened in such a close proximity. I tend to think Griffith's speech did since it's something he constantly thinks and talks about afterwards. Though maybe the trauma from killing Adonis is just something he has to block out mentally, and discussing that with anyone is out of the question.
@@BecketTheHymnist when I first read the golden age arc, I didn't totally understand why guts wanted to leave the band of the hawk. But looking back, he killed a kid + a bunch of innocent people, and right after that he heard Griffith say that he doesn't consider any of his soldiers to be his equal/friend. While we were already used to the darker version of Guts, this was probably the first time golden age guts did something this twisted. Normally he kills out of necessity, on the battlefield where his life and the lives of his soldiers are on the line. Even though it wasn't explicitly stated by Guts, it's clear that he didn't like where he was headed (assassinating people, working in the shadows, killing kids just for political points). All for someone who doesn't even truly respect him.
Not really relevant to the topic of his edge, but I get where you're coming from.
@@tjt6821
It is relevant to the discussion, because he brings up character defining or altering moments for Guts. I think he skipped over this one, which is one of the most important if not the most important IMO
Just a little thing: the first moments of the life of a newborn child are actually essential for his later development, even if he isn't able to consciously remember any of them.
Wanted to say it, but you did. It matters a lot and should not be just mentioned as an irrelevant misshapen
I have a friend who counts his age based on the moment he was conceived, meaning he thinks it matters the same as the moment your mother gave birth to you. Adding relevance to the place where it happened! I like that... Now, Guts was barely born, more like he evacuated his mother just to survive... and straight on to the battlefield no less. And so the struggle begins
i'd say guts has more of a human natural edge
he emits it like a human and has a tragic life like a human
that's why for me guts was the reason guts was soooo unadaptable because he is like a human who constantly goes to abyss and back some times wanting that all to end yet still going through to just have a good life in a world where there is no good and GOD Is the devil himself
@@BOOFIRE191 i'd say that only few characters like Guts have this human like nature to them. And in general they not always have to be edge.
Good examples of that could be the entire Straw Hat crew which do have such human arcs but in their world, the story of their like is mostly overcoming of obsticles to reach a a dream and leave behind the awful nightmares of past.
Basically their is of story of comedy and like human like joy of life.
While in case of guts it the opposite it is the greatest tragedy that brings human like nihilism, depression and constant spirals up and down.
The unadaptability is a stupid argument. There have been tons of movies with characters suffering from existential crises that turn to a life of violence.
Berserk not getting a proper adaptation is a problem of Japanese anime studios simply not having the creativity, maturity, or the resources to do it.
Guts is more human than any character I've seen, knowing his mortality and facing foes on a demonic level and using his willpower to push through, and show his character in many of the events that he goes through. He's practically a character to relate to and his life is something no one should ever go through as it's terrifying. Great video 🤙
I dont know spike spiegal is pretty human.
At the risk of sounding pretentious, continuing with the "blade" word play, to those geometrically inclined, serrated blades have a lot more surface area to explore than their smoother brothers. Both blades make nasty cuts, but serrated blades get caught on soft targets (padded clothes and such). Guts begins to get caught on the softer Puck, Isidro, Farny, Serpico, and Schierke, and after realizing that they have become his new friends, Guts's edge is more or less halted by the fabric of his new family, and Guts doesn't want to pull loose.
beautifully said
Hmm a character throughout his life with several ups and downs? It's almost as if Gutts was written to be like a REAL PERSON!
YEAH, ITS LIKE HE EVEN REPRESENTS HUMANITY ITSELF RIGHT?
Wish more "writers" in the woke west was like that nowadays....
The thing about edginess is that it's a power fantasy to set someone up to be different than everybody else and to defy the rules.
The first chapter is designed to prop him up to break that illusion immediately. Guts is first introduced as this big powerful man by first fucking a demon and killing it, then getting into a bar fight and decimating anyone around him.
This goes crashing down on meeting the very first apostle when he's shown just how vastly outmatched Guts is compared to his opponent. This isn't Griffith or Zodd, but the literal first boss we see Guts fight and he gets bodied.
That moment is when Guts truly feels human, when he has to take his human weakness and eventually overcome that apostle. You feel how Guts feels as he tortures that demon because you see his struggle just to survive against this being. Then you see Guts leave, realizing that this is what Guts will have to overcome for the rest of this manga.
That is what separates Guts from an edgelord. Guts struggles and earns his humanity.
They say childhood trauma sticks with you. This could even apply to something as having the foreskin removed. Being birthed like that was definitely traumatic even if he doesnt consciously remember it.
7:37 Imagine if Berserk is still at 50% done and Miura takes another 30 years to finish it...
Risky
Nah, Berserk may be in 70-75%
Better be careful with that rune commander. An inquisitor might mistake it for something related to chaos. Also love the avatar.
Or Eldar...
@@Sorrowdusk that too
Most weebs are too unsocialized to understand the nuances of Berserk. They see a piece of Japanese literature that's "dark and edgy" and popular and go long with the crowd saying it's the best thing ever without really understanding why.
Lol so true
yep lol
"nobody understands" - Every Berserk Video on UA-cam
wow you actually predicted that third peak. now we'll just have to see how much more or less edgy he'll be than the other peaks in the past.
You know , today is the 30th anniversary of berserk and we still in the middle :)
Boofire ya sneaky son of a gun I barely recognized the music from the Dark Souls trilogy in the background and I love it! It fits the video so well
DS is heavily inspired by Berserk
One of my biggest fears is dying before berserk finishes
the thing with berserk that gets the edge right is the fact that miura's design is really human, in contrast with the generic shonen edge lord that appears with a sad backstory for the sake of develop the original plot, guts like a real human being has traumas, and the shit he's seen is relatable enough from a veteran solder who was in the frontline
I used to think Guts was a generic tough guy character but since I started my second reading of Berserk I've come to see how complex he is
The whole concept of "Edge" or "Edgy" is a dead meme at this point given how often it's overused and often used in the worst possible context, I mean literally most people who actually use the word to describe something as "dark" yet at the same time they ignore the fact that Life itself is "edgy" in the whole definition, while they themselves can be edgy to a degree.
Point being that it's a overused buzzword to describe something "dark" or "serious" while pretending nothing "dark" or "serious" happens in the real world as well, I mean it's at the point where you might as well call anything and anyone "edgy" given it's very vague, arbitrary, and often meaningless double standard definition or use.
Edgy refers to something that tries to be "dark and mature" but really isn't and comes off as blatantly adolescent.
(if want an example from anime, take Tokyo Ghoul)
@@cybertron1000s Well yeah I know what you mean but I feel like most people use it to describe nearly anything nowadays and it's a big shame, it reminds me of those people that use the words "racist" or "transphobic" in the wrong context or just in a repeated manner that it just loses it's meaning..
@@cybertron1000s akame ga kill is the finest example
I would have disagreed with you but then the person in the video used Kirito as an example of "edgy." I mean I hate the character too, but from what I've seen, he seems to try to be a nice guy. Just because he wears black doesn't mean he goes around refusing to help people and saying overly dark one liners while killing his enemies.
As far as I know( not a whole lot) edgy is something that tries to be dark an serious but tries to hard for it's own good, like being so unrealisticly angry and brooding that it ends up being funny on a metal perspective since generally the show or book or game or whatever won't have a centimeter of self awareness.
But all and all you are right. A lot of people misuse it to diminish any dark fiction, good ones included
50-70% done?
Mother-
30 years, man. Imagine. Another 10-30 years until it's over. I know Miura came out and said he was to try and speed it up. But how fast is that?
Three chapters per year???
as fast as a Matilda Mk. ll with a dead driver, broken engine, going uphill in a swamp.
WORTH IT!
@@chef3997 that's being generous
Damn…
"I'm gonna cleave that asshole apart!"-Guts
This always cracks me up when I think about it out of context lol
I hear Gwyn's theme and it gets me right in the feels.
Given 2 things I’d say something bad is going to happen to everybody, especially Farnese.
Fact 1: the Skullknight is on the island.
Fact 2: Farnese is the lynchpin for most everybody in the story (Serpico, Shierke, Caska, Roderick, House Vandimion. even, to a point, the Pope.) She couldn’t be more important to the world of Berserk... except in death.
Rip Kentaro Miura.
Guts is the human experience, endless ups and downs in life. Regular anime/fairy tales always end with a forever happy ending, which is nothing like real life. That's why berserk is so different and enlightening. It's not just a lazily done happy ending n done that's it. There's always another dip in the rollercoaster.
Do love the souls music While I can't recognise the piece, I know that it's the bit before slave knight gales theme in that 10 minute dark souls finale mix from Alex Roe
Its the gwyn theme
@@juanaguirrezabala9619 I knew I recognized that heavenly piano melody

5th - Return to Slumber, Demons Souls'
3:28 i just realized Guts' belt has the sacrifice brand on it
7:40 The foreshadowing is immense here
Nobody Understands Berserk: Guts' Edge: Also known as he's human. :)
He's human. And like most humans in real life, he is constantly fighting demons, winning and tempering his character. Thats what I love most about him. Hes easily the most complex character thats been written in a manga. A close second would be Ah Gou of Feng Shen Ji.
At 6:05 the majestic plin plin plon starts😭😭😭 m at tears duddddeee
Thank god I'm not guts
Pussy :D
It's not very often the algorithm finds something I really like in the autoplay from a channel I'm not subscribed to. But this I like, it's so down my alley that I assumed this was from a channel I already watch till I couldn't place the voice as someone I recognized. Long story short, I'm subscribing and going to start digging through the back catalog for more video essays I'll enjoy.
Edit added after checking more vids from this channel:
This channel really should have way more subscribers than it does comparing this to other channels that have more subs but make less comprehensive and less professional similar themed videos.
Hears Gwin's music, big sad nostalgia Moment
Id say he never fully dips out of his "edge" as he grows due to literal endless blood boiling rage
Guts's backstory feels like an organic part of his ongoing current story. He was born into suffering and cruelty. Are the moments in which he found good in the world an alternative to that state of existence, or just more fuel for its flames? We still don't know the answer, and Berserk of all stories certainly doesn't give the sense of a preordained outcome. Guts's optimism with his new band is cautious, and rightly so. We're right there with him.
This video aged perfectly
Another way of saying it might be 'most characters only have one arc, Guts has had two and will probably have more.' Or 'this manga will never be finished' for short.
I want to add into this the chapter where he meets godo for the last time, where godo helps guts understand what matters most between getting revenge or being with casca.
We are born of the Edge...made men by the Edge...
Believe or not The Skylander's Cartoon version of Spyro has a serrated Edge like Guts.
Peak Edge: Spyro's egotistical thinking he's the best at everything even though he's not.
Mid Edge: Spyro starts to get some humility upon working with the other Skylanders.
Baseline: Spyro becomes content with himself finding his hidden skills but he wish's to
learn more about his mysterious kind.
Escalation: Spyro learns that Master Eon the person he loves and his essential Father, betrayed
his race banishing and dooming his Family upon they're unintentional turn to the dark side.
Peak Edge: Spyro get's Transformed into Dark Spyro by Strikor after shortly after an re-encounter
with Malefor becoming an Evil enemy of the Skylanders.
Mid Edge: The Good in Spyro starts slowly coming back to him as a result of being around and helping
his ally's.
Peak Edge: Strikor forces the good out of Spyro making him Pure Evil again.
Mid Edge: Spyro briefly snaps back into conciseness preventing himself from killing Stealth Elf.
Peak Edge: Spyro is fully controlled by his Evil Side.
Mid Edge: Spyro is physically battling his Evil Half.
Baseline: Spyro conquers his inner Demons and his Fear embracing the Skylanders as his cherished
ally's/friends.
If a 4th Season and more so existed Spyro's Edge would likely further sake up considering his Family and Race
are still Banished Dark Dragons.
And now with the newest chapters it kinda feels like he just missed out on an happy end, like a sucker punch in the guts. It already started going downhill again
I’ve noticed guts starts to change quite a bit in the events after the fight with zodd on hill of swords, he’s not as dark as he was, I personally like dark guts the most
You are 100% percent correct about this video!
For those who have listened pay close attention because the story is just over the 50% point. What I anticipate will happen is either his band will slowly die or he will be forced to sacrifice them like Griffiths had earlier in the beginning. He has assembled his family or team just like the band of the hawk. He also stated how he didn't really care to pursuit Femto, but as male stories go this responsibility will be unavoidable.
Act3: Struggle is now beginning.
Waiting now for more than-3 years for new berserk anime.
Hope never dies
Dude love the content you make for berserk, keep shooting out more
Excellent video man, thank you! I just finished the Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc and I'm sooo very excited about Fantasia!
Well said. Personally, the only time I thought the edge went too far was the black hounds or whatever they are called.
Great Video, hope it blows up.
I dont want to see casca die, but to only one who could realy break guts is losing casca
"straight edge approach....."
that shit had me dying laughing idk why lol
I've never understood why people consider something 'bad' just because it is 'edgy'. Just like every aspect of a story or character it is all in the execution whether it is good or not. Berserk has a very good execution in edge imo.
If I remember correctly; Miura has Duranki going on in order to teach his assistants his style so they can pump out more berserk chapters
So Guts doesn't have an edge, he has a fork
This music giving me them soul sacrifice vibes.. more
Aha Felix Fraldarius is such an Edge boy but he just loves his family and wants to protect everyone 💚 I like that you showed his picture
Great video, dude, it's probably my favorite from you so far, it had a good balance between humour and exposition, the visual knife metaphor was awesome, and all of your arguments about Guts' character growth and the edgyness topic were very well worded, I'll 100% show it to my friends who say that 'edgy manga like Berserk' aren't worth it.
Only 52-70% of the story done? Oh god!
I believe you can go far more indepth on the edge. he is serated, because, he makes the edge part of him when it is down instead of being gone. when it is full edge at the summit he has let the edge become his entirety. Just a glimpse to what I mean :p
Guts's edge will come back when he leaves Casca again, for Skull Knight.
It appears so. I think hes going to leave to go train with the skull knight as he clearly will need it for the gargantuan task at hand.
@@thedude8526 In Guts's absence, Casca will assume leadership of Guts's crew. It'll be interesting to see how she'll confront Griiffith/her son.
Sir this video is amazing and the soundtrack is top notch for the topic, love ds2!
YES!! finaly a video about berserk
You used music from the Dark Souls ost.
Noice!
Guts is just an emo teenager with divorced parents but also a giant sword
I wish these videos were longer
the next peak of edge its gonna be big
Damn, he really used the Plin Plin Plon in a Berserk video
The berserk armor is dangerous. Guts may endup killing a (or several) love one under its influence (kentaro is a fan of starwars) and be tempted to use the egg and join the dark forces of Void (take the place of the falcon ?). He may refuse and then "repeat" Skull K. destiny (kind of).
Shame we were likely extremely close to that third peak when Miura sadly passed away... 😔
Guts is not edgy. He is brutally realistic and brutally pragmatic.
He knows how things work and have no reservations about showing the dark side of life to others with no fluff.
He knows what he is, where he came from and where he is going.
He does not care if he disillusions or damages the peoples world views around him.
Those who can stand the reality will know that Guts is right. Those who can not crumble.
Guts, just is.
Guts vs Batman please.
I need a comparison between their EDGINESS.
Good edge:
Zuko from ATLA
Bad edge:
kirito
My man is making a Berserk video and is playing PLIN PLIN PLON in the back👌
I was once hesitant to read the manga, now I literally read the manga over and over again.
Man Guts is creepy when he puts his mind to it
Lol also thought of that helmet style looked like Batman
When I saw Peak Edge. I was expecting the other 1 to say Peaker Edge.
So if this theory holds true... we're waiting for another serrated edge to pop up....
Oh... oh no.
What does Guts do to things if he's heated to 1000 degrees?
Ignite it?
His clangs are louder
At 6:05 all I can hear is the Plin Plin Plon. Nice
Hell yeah man, thanks for helping us out
Upvote for the "Shrine of Armana" soundtrack of Dark Souls 2.
Damn guts could have completely changed after 364 but I guess we will never know
he really hit us with plin plin plon
If Guts activates the behelit and has to overcome the temptation from the Idea of Evil to join the God Hand, then the Beast of Darkness will end up being a very necessary test!
I'm loving the idea that ultimately Guts will destroy the God Hands beliefs regarding causality and free will.
Like the use of the dark souls soundtrack. Good stuff.
I believe from chapter 359 it guts went down to a whole new level of low even though casca is back her ptsd is pretty bad of course now after that hes back on the warpath against griffith skull knight is there for him its time to pay up guts you owe him BIG TIME
I just wanted to say that, I'm listening with headphones and not watching the screen, yet I instantly know that shot was some at SAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I had to rewind just to confirm, and I died when I saw the picture on the screen.
