    The boxcars and hoppers are to help with braking. 4014 can use their air brakes to help slow it down instead of burning up it's own brakes since a diesel isn't needed anymore in the consist.

    How come no diesel? Ever since I heard the arguments on why they always had a diesel, it makes so much sense.

      Yeah, when my dad and I went to see 4014 in 2019, it was insane. It took some of the most aggressive driving I'd ever seen Dad do (and he was a retired fighter pilot who'd worked for UP before joining the Air Force) to even have a snowflake's chance of good position. So we agreed if we ever got another crack at it, we'd focus on one great photo spot before and one after a scheduled stop, or meet, or whatever. No more chasing.

    I hate to burst all of your bubbles, but look this up on UA-cam "Union Pacific Railroad Big Boy 4014 Steam Engine in Feather River Canyon with bridges" That video was shot on July 11th, and guess what, the Diesel was back. Don't know why, but there it is. Either the electronic package that was stashed in the tender failed or malfunctioned, or the Diesel is need for help with braking after all. I will find out when it returns to Cheyenne, since I live here.

      They won't go a long distance without a diesel. Ed has spoke about it helping with wear and tear on the 4014 brakes.

      @longrider42 3 місяці тому

      @@railgraphix So, even though money was spent and the RTC? was installed into the tender. So it would not need a diesel engine, it still does? Besides, when it left Cheyenne on June 30th, heading west, I watched it leave, there was no diesel engine, but lots of box cars and such behind. To help with braking, or so I was told.

    Why the big u p locos always have to run with a diesel is a mystery, and dont try and tell me the bull story about braking and pullinh power,, in the hey days yoi never had f7,s or gp9s coupled to them on a passenger job,

    • @railgraphix
      @railgraphix  6 місяців тому

      As Ed has stated in numerous presentations and comments, they don’t have a way to easily maintain the brakes on the road if they were to wear out, or if something below happens mechanically. The diesel has in the past had the PTC system. Now 4014 has a custom one.
