- Cell phone video of Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 in Cheyenne, WY. 4014 went west for a test run to test the new PTC system. No diesel was in the consist. This video shows the engine from the shop to Speer. Sorry about the wind in the videos, gotta love nature! I left in parts that have the crew and dispatch talking on the scanner.

They have to use this engine to power a revenue freight train now that the PTC setup is complete. These things weren't built to pull excursion or tourist trains. It was designed and built specifically to haul heavy freight at high speeds.
What an amazing piece of machinery,crude technology but (Big) Boy she looks and runs nice......

I went to a website the summer of 2021 and programmed it. I found out how to program from a UA-cam video. Don’t remember which one.

Wowwwww!!! No diesel helper. But I doubt if dynamic braking is unneccessary.
If 4014 runs without a diesel helper it will probably be in specific places where they don't necessarily need dynamic brakes. Places like Cajon Pass, Donner Pass, or anywhere with a heavy grade will likely require diesels to provide dynamic braking.
It still has air brakes and when you apply them you can so call bail them off so the brakes on the engine aren't set and doesn't ware down the expensive custom brakes and only goes to the cars, that's why there is so many extra cars on this train for the extra brakes to set up

@@erisdiscordia1649 not quite, just that when its on its own with no diesel and thus no dinos it needs more cars to act as more breaks when they set air

I think they should start building more steam engines because we spend so much fuel for multiple engines to pull freight when you only need a single steam engine to pull freight. I can’t believe we where very dumb to retire steam when they have massive torque and the technology we have to upgrade them. Then spending billions of dollars to build diesel engines.
