Hey guy, thanks again for watching! Just a footnote: we like to analyze Moral Orel "top down". This means looking at the social implications of events, then analyzing the characters in that context, then seeing how it effects the character's psyche. What we don't want to do as we analyze is treat the characters like real people or let our emotions about their actions get in the way, because they don't do the harm that real people do, and are more useful as hypothetical examples. Remember- ceci n'est pas une pipe!
sensationalism in the morel orel community really glosses over some key symbolism and character development for orel and i HATE IT the biggest turning point for orel was in nature when he shot the bear but purposefully lied about it just to not satisfy his father, which is the exact OPPOSITE of what he did in earlier episodes and shows what his new motives are
The first time I watched Moral Orel as a teen over a decade ago, I remember getting choked up and chills when Orel said, "no, dad. You shot the bear." I have a good relationship with my dad and he's a much better man than Clay, but I remember the moments that his drinking changed something in me.
the comment in the video addressed this already but society’s need to violently punish victims rather than investing in social programs that PREVENT victimization is typified in Moral Orel. Western U.S. Imperial society relies on the criminal legal system which punishes and is entangled with religious morality, which the show does a great job of satirizing how the U.S. creates the perfect environments for neglect etc.
this channel genuinely has some stellar moral orel content, i've literally never picked up on so many of these things before despite watching the series multiple times.
Ya know, having not watched the show at first, hearing he did all these crimes from icebergs and such made me really confused. I understood the idea of Orel being a loveable naive scamp but just hearing it doesnt translate that idea at all. Watching it tho the tone makes it really click. The combination of the pupets, music, line delivery, and dialogue explains why Orel raising the dead or doing crack isn't just shock value. The way he walks through his rationale to do these things adds this really horrifying layer of "oh god he's a child. This is how children think i understand how he got into this." hes doing something messed up but the context is so important to how the show functions it's kind of wild how much the concept falls apart without every peice in play That being said Clay being the mayor does add a fascinating context to those cops that tried to apprehend Orel for his Baker deeds. They were trying to arrest their Boss' boss' kid. knowing how the other serial assaulter in show was treated its clear he wouldn't have ever gotten full blame in the eyes of the public. But those guys had to have known he was the mayors kid and tried to arrest his ass anyways. wild.
57:20 This whole section really reminded me of my time in the Falsettos fandom. Occasionally I’d run into someone who read Marvin as bisexual, which led to a similar situation of “well I guess you could read that character as bisexual instead of gay since it’s never explicitly stated otherwise in the text, but that reading makes the story a lot less interesting as both a character study and as a social commentary. If he’s gay it’s a compelling deconstruction of how compulsive heterosexuality hurts and warps people and how those people can sometimes hurt others in turn. If he’s bisexual he’s just a guy who really didn’t like his wife in particular.”
Wait, so rape is counted as only 12 months per count... But distraction of property is 5 years? I mean that tracts for Stateasota but... Hurts a bit more if thats real state law
Hey it's the video I commented about wanting to see!! I feel like I comment on everything on this channel, but I've now got a proxy obsession! (I'll definitely watch it when I'm in a better headspace, for now I'll simply think about it forever) I was surprised seeing people were horrified by the God's Chef episode! But then I realised maybe not everyone grew up in a moralton environment! (sorry to yap again) To me, it reminded me of growing up hearing "girls don't have those feelings, girls never want sex, you're all born inherently pure", and then when my friends would admit to the creepy shit they did, they'd say "well girls don't like sex, and I'm a girl and I like this, therefore it isn't sex(ual harassment)"...The logic is so stupid but It made sense to literal kids! It's pretty much the same line of logic Orel used. (Also why I kind of hate that comment implying Bendy's trauma would've been fixed by a woman, because women in moralton towns do not grow up with a healthier view of sex than men!!)
If Moral Orel was to be continued, I think getting a chance to partially or fully redo s3 would be a solid idea. The way they had to rush to a conclusion definitely shows :
rattles the bars of my cage why couldn't i get a super fun cool group to talk to about moral orel and make silly videos with anyways love all the videos and it's really changed some of my perspective on the show. i too was someone who previously believed clay was bi until i heard you guys break down more of his character and background. pls keep making videos about funny puppet show
Me too, I just have this itch. I don’t think it’ll be gone for good. It’ll come back, maybe soon, maybe later. Maybe WAYYYY later, but I don’t this is the last time we’ll see off this show, especially since it’s been getting popular these past years, I think it will come back.
I think another reason why treating the characters as completely good or evil is a bad idea (beyond the reasons that its a bad idea to label real life people as good or evil) is that the show is a work of fiction. although all the characters in the show are very complex as individuals and have a lot of nuance, in a show that is intentionally an exaggerated representation of society, the characters themselves are representations of many different types of people, and completely writing them off as irredeemable makes them unrelatable in a way that can be damaging to the reading of the show. the fact that the characters arent just characters but also representations means that there are complexities in them that the viewer may relate to and help them to examine within themselves, and completely shutting yourself off from a character because theyre a shithead is depriving yourself of potential introspection. for example, if clay was a real guy who actually got wasted and then shot his son on a hunting trip, i think discussing what lead him to that point would be a lot less important than discussion what should be done about him because clearly he cannot be trusted around children, firearms, alcohol etc. but because he is a fictional character and we dont need to worry about him hurting people, going into his backstory and understanding his path can be very useful for seeing the ripples that cause tragedies like this, and helps the viewer to understand and reconsider the choices they make and way they talk to people as the consequences can be unforseen and dire, especially when it is a child in someones care. idk how much sense this comment makes bc it is stream of consciousness, its 3am and i am tired. good vids gang love them keep up da good work 👍🏻
The comment regarding God’s Chef is rooted in a similar way I noticed about the episode, which I left on another video. The whole point of the episode is, simply put, innocence can be harmful, even deadly. That’s the message of Moral Orel, which gets so sensationalized because people are too lazy to do anything deeper (aside from you guys; this has been such a wonderful channel to enjoy regarding such a deep show). This is why evangelical religions, especially Christianity, are toxic and abuse enabling. But most people don’t want to analyze. They want to be spoon fed opinions because it’s easier, judge first and think later. Ironically these are the very same people who say “don’t tell me what to do” while trying to boss everyone around - not unlike religious cults. I was raised with Jewish philosophy (not the religion itself or its traditions), so I was taught to think for myself, base my opinions on my own observations and facts - nothing more, but certainly nothing less. As I mentioned, most people are lazy, which leads to the reaction videos we get everywhere on UA-cam (which I avoid like the plague). It’s harder at first, but with practice it becomes easier and enriches media consumption. Let’s be honest, most people think Rick and Morty and Family Guy are the be all and end all of adult humor and observations. Really what it shows is a lack of maturity in our culture. And it’s not an easy cure to fix either. As the one comment said earlier, society perpetuates abuse, thereby creating victims that go on for generations, and the cure is a complete societal structure makeover where we create more positive environments for raising children. We abuse survivors must take responsibility for our actions while acknowledging we were victims as well, sometimes for multiple generations. But if we as a lazy species cannot cope with facing our flaws, how much hope do we have of uprooting this societal BS? I believe it’s happening with the parents of today who care about their children and try to break this cycle. It’s a shame it took so long, but a step in the right direction is always a good thing. Also, Clay’s fursona being a giraffe is great foreshadowing, something even I didn’t see at first. Nice subtlety there. I have a theory about Clay Puppington: I’m thinking his familiarity with Darwin was a last-ditch effort to try to connect with his father Arthur in a meaningful way, something he could at least say he tried to bond with him over. After all, Arthur was an atheist. So when Arthur true to form rejected Clay for that last time Clay left and disowned his father. I really love your videos because it forces us all to see beyond the surface. It’s so similar to how I was brought up and I love your dedication. Please keep it up!
I watched the first two videos and now I’m thinking…I should really try to find this show to watch it first. I thought they were kind of narrating the story as well as I’ll use the word “analyzing” it. This one’s not telling the story as much and I saw today I can see it on you tube. But I have enjoyed the conversation about this show. Seems very interesting for sure!
I think the big reason people take the nuance out of this show/sensationalize it by seeing characters like Clay, Bloberta and and Reverend as inherently Bad and/or evil is because they don't realize that the adults of Moralton are just as oblivious and misguided as Orel is. Orel is given sort of a pass for the things he does because people think he's just innocent and misguided, but they blame the people who harm him, even though Orel also does terrible things for very similar reasons that people in his community are as toxic as they are. Orel's crimes and Moralton's toxicity are all symptoms of the same cause: prejudice, miseducation, hypocrisy, rape/purity culture, and the general harmful ideals of christian fundamentalism. I'm so glad this channel understands that--like the show is so deep and nuanced, it deserves to be analyzed as deeply as it was written.
Honestly I found some of the talk around Orels family a little triggering. He's not "too good" for his abusers? Clay and Bloberta are nuanced people, but they're not just "obstacles" to Orel, they neglect and abuse him, two things can be true at once. I haven't really seen people calling Clay evil, if anything there's a glut of sympathy and apology around him. I disagree Clay shooting Orel is sensationalized or satirical, plenty of abusive people are irresponsible with their firearms and plenty of alcoholics injure their children. And it doesn't even change anything for Clay, he doesn't consider getting sober, he isn't even SORRY that he permantly injured Orel, giving him a limp for the rest of his life. Even if the shooting could be framed a socer the top, Clays character choices after that speak to what a terrible father his is, how little he really cares. Idk, it just was uncomfy to hear how Clay and Bloberta just made mistakes, as if they weren't actively irresponsible and cruel to him and Shapey. Every abused child kbows their parents had causes and reasons, but it feels bad to focus too much on that, nothing excuses that or makes Orel less worthy of sympathy. The way they treated Orel isn't just because of their bad marriage, they chose every day to ignore him, manipulate him, beat him, and demean him in respect to Clay. I hope we get a video actually focusing on Orel, because I think he's a really interesting character who clearly loves his parents and understands them better than they know.
Golly, you've pointed out something very important! Like you said, many abusive people are irresponsible with firearms and alcoholics often injure their children. The raw depiction of it in Moral Orel helps to draw attention to instances of it in reality. This is what effective satire does! And it's important not to reduce it to a sensational incident or the total sum of the show, because then the audience misses the bigger picture, much like how they miss that Orel's actions in episodes such as God's Chef are a product of existing in his environment and not just meant for shock value! We are working on an Orel video, so stay tuned!
I feel like you guys are really making what people think of moral as really dumbed down as well. A lot really dont think about it that way. Oral is loved because supposed to represent breaking the system and his situation with his own dad slowly opens his mind especially do to him interacting with people who don't fully follow how moraltin is. Its supposed to be a slow burn. Oral is a kid he is creation of this system but also is the one who eventually breaks out. They cant make more episodes but him living happily is supposed to represent that. Its not saying he is a good guy no one is saying that but his trauma and his eyes being opened by what happened with his dad was the first step of him questioning all of this. Reverend Putty isnt glorified he's just shown that he is not completely like the others thanks to his daughter. He's in the same boat as oral where he has someone that slowly changed his mind but in a positive. He doesn't hate his daughter for being gay he doesn't point out her being gay is an issue, he points out that the real problem is she kept going after a girl that never even loved her. And thats why people loved him cause he is shown to be more then one just one dimensional with having to follow everything about the Bible, he puts certain things aside cause he does care for his daughter. These people aren't gonna change at a snap of a finger but you see some that are shown they are willing to change some their views which is oral and putty is hinted to willing to be open minded thanks to his relationship to his design.
Clay's sexuality is a big topic in this fandom. On my first rewatch, after consuming some other people's discussions about this, i was almost convinced that Clay is gay, but on the episode where Orel basically became a p*mp, we clearly see Clay "ordering" the girls. And it's implied that he used their services several times. This part made me believe less in his full homosexuality. I believe he's bi, who does prefer men better, yet still can be attracted to women. His relationship with Ms. Sensordoll seems to be driven by fetish rather than genuine attraction, I agree with you on that. On the other hand, those parallels to giraffes seem very interesting, but i feel like we might be putting a bit too much sense into a gag
i do personally think you can hold parents who continue abuse to their children (whether they realize it or not) accountable and more so than that child who causes harm to others because of the abuse they suffered from their parents. why i think this is because i think the decision to have children is inherently selfish(why do i think its an inherently selfish act? well because if you ask most people why they have kids theyll tell you, they wanted the experience of having a kid. that kid didnt ask to be there, its all your choice to bring that soul into the world because you wanted to raise it), you as a parent are meant to take FULL RESPONSIBILITY over that child and it's well being. if a parent is not in a good mental state it is selfish to procreate and traumatize more children. in my opinion. theres people who know their own brains well enough to know they wouldnt be good parents so they dont procreate (to make sure they dont cause the harm that they felt as a child) and i commend those people. others can disagree with me but seriously dont procreate unless youre ready to choose that kid over your partner and yourself ALWAYS, if youre a parent and not putting your child first thats causing so much more harm than just abusing a rando you come across in life.imo
is this an actual kids show? wouldn't it be traumatizing? i found out ab the show through these very well done videos. you sound like a bunch of pshychiatrist or somehting like that

It was truly a scene that solidified the show's direction as a coming of age story...
The first time I watched Moral Orel as a teen over a decade ago, I remember getting choked up and chills when Orel said, "no, dad. You shot the bear."
I have a good relationship with my dad and he's a much better man than Clay, but I remember the moments that his drinking changed something in me.

too long has he slipped through the cracks in the justice system. you cannot evade the long arm of the law ANY LONGER orel !!!!!!!

It is concerningly common for sex offenders to get the shortest sentences while everything else is much higher
The real reason the show got canceled is because he went to jail
Watching this to take my mind off election results ❤

The comment regarding God’s Chef is rooted in a similar way I noticed about the episode, which I left on another video.

I think the big reason people take the nuance out of this show/sensationalize it by seeing characters like Clay, Bloberta and and Reverend as inherently Bad and/or evil is because they don't realize that the adults of Moralton are just as oblivious and misguided as Orel is.

You could've went with both states and just chosen the worst sentence for each crime.
i do personally think you can hold parents who continue abuse to their children (whether they realize it or not) accountable and more so than that child who causes harm to others because of the abuse they suffered from their parents. why i think this is because i think the decision to have children is inherently selfish(why do i think its an inherently selfish act? well because if you ask most people why they have kids theyll tell you, they wanted the experience of having a kid. that kid didnt ask to be there, its all your choice to bring that soul into the world because you wanted to raise it), you as a parent are meant to take FULL RESPONSIBILITY over that child and it's well being. if a parent is not in a good mental state it is selfish to procreate and traumatize more children. in my opinion. theres people who know their own brains well enough to know they wouldnt be good parents so they dont procreate (to make sure they dont cause the harm that they felt as a child) and i commend those people. others can disagree with me but seriously dont procreate unless youre ready to choose that kid over your partner and yourself ALWAYS, if youre a parent and not putting your child first thats causing so much more harm than just abusing a rando you come across in life.imo
Putty is a 10 idk man

is this an actual kids show? wouldn't it be traumatizing? i found out ab the show through these very well done videos. you sound like a bunch of pshychiatrist or somehting like that
Gosh, no! This show was made for adult swim in 2005. This is NOT for kids!
God is the villain.
But God didn't do anything wrong in the show. Belief in God helped Orel a lot, actually. Even the Buddha doesn't try to turn Orel away from God
@ but everything is part of god’s plan
