Thank you so so much! I started working with this at my dad's church and the most I could do was control volume and mitigate feedback and add coloring to the sound with the EQ, but everything else I couldn't figure out for the life of me. Thank you for this simple yet detailed breakdown, I feel a lot better about being able to give my dad the sound he wants for his church!
Thank you for taking the time to do this. We had an A/V person who set up and ran our church service streaming. He left and now we’re scrambling to figure it all out. I have a very basic knowledge of using an analog board and this tutorial has helped understand the digital X32 Compact we have. Thanks again!
Would love to see an X32 Compact in depth explanation/tutorial on routing and set up using digital snakes etc, plus a more detailed session on effects please.
Got this board a couple months ago at church. We've been trying to figure out stuff on our own, but since we have been having issues, I thought I'd check out your video before our meeting on getting everyone on the same page. The scene info is going to be very helpful, because everyone else gets crazy with this board.
Thanks for a great tutorial! We use 12 mics and one thing that I find very useful is the ability to view your 16 mic inputs across the board by selecting 1-8 and 9-16 on the left side of the board at the same time.
Matt, The band I run sound for has a X32 Compact. All band members (5) are using Shure P2 IEMs. All are using a phone or iPad to mix their own monitor mix. They are using either the M32 or M32-Q app. My question. Is there any way on an X32 Compact that would allow me to lock out each of the musicians being able to leaving their respective IEM mix/Aux channel? So they don't accidently go to the FOH mix or accidently press another band members Aux send channel when in the app? Thank you.
awesome tutorial! I am also apart of a church band and we have two groups; scenes feature seems easy and fun to use when it comes to making our own presets. We are planning to make an upgrade to our pa system and this board looks very promising! Thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful and educational!
I have been looking into acquiring one of these for a cover band I am FOH for. They do mostly small venues with occassional medium size venues. There are 9 instruments, 6 vocals, and one drum kit requiring 9 mics at large venues. Max board inputs would be 24. Minimum (at small venues) is 10. There are 3 vocal leads which change based on the song. Using this would be so much better than trying to condense down into the an mg16 and mg20 the band owns lol
Hi Matt. Your video is great.. I am new to the Behringer x32 compact. I am trying my best to find way around it. Just a few days ago I cannot get any audio feed to go to the monitors. The two main speakers work great but my 3 floor monitors have no feed coming through them from the console. What advice can you give me? Thanks
Follow your signal path from start to finish. Are your sources sent to your mix bus? You should see the meter moving on the bus. If that is good, make sure your mix bus fader is up and not muted. Then be sure your routing is correct. Then confirm your amps are setup correctly. Parts 2 and 3 of this series go over busses and routing. Hope this helps!
Great tutorial. Our church plans to order the X32 compact. We don’t have a clue how to work it & have no audio background. What are bus output & matrix output & do we need to know this? Since I am so new to this, most of what you are saying makes no sense, however, we will get 5 hours of training. We have someone who will set everything up for us. We have a simple setup with pulpit & lectern stationary mics, a couple of lavalieres & handheld mic as well as two overhead mics to pick up our choir. Do you have a basic tutorial once the setup is done on how to work the board? Sorry we are so inexperienced. Thanks
Hey @mattingram just wondering if I can route vocal mics to go through one speaker and music mics for piano/guitar/flute through another set of speakers. Cheers
Yes, that can be done in many ways. You can do a simple hard pan left and right, or create a vocal mix bus. The way I would recommend is mixing your instruments stereo out the LR and Vocals out the Center Bus.
Great Tutorials, Matt. Our small church recently purchased a Behringer X32 Compact and I think it's going to be an enormous asset to our audio/visual efforts. We have both "pulpit" stationary Mics and Wireless/Cordless Mics -- but the problem I'm having setting up the board is getting "sound" from the pulpit stationary Mics to come out the house speakers... the wireless Mic setup and sound comes out, but not the stationary pulpit & Lecturn Mics. What am I doing wrong? (Does anyone else have this isssue?)
I imagine those mics probably take phantom power, so I would check that first. If you are seeing an input signal but getting no output, you may need to confirm that it is bussed to your main LR, and if it is in a DCA make sure that fader is up also.
Great tutorial, thank you for sharing this! For 10:52 you may want to anyway save the previous setup for the whoever made it, before you then re-open yours
Happy to help! I would not recommend saving the previous setup personally. You would end up with hundreds of extra saves, creating a new on everytime you get your turn on the console. Each user really needs to save their scenes when they are done. Good idea though!
TFTGear that would be very helpful!! We started streaming out church service like everyone else but we’re learning as we go. Learning how to properly set up vocal mics with effects would be awesome because we notice on the stream it sounds to dry
Hi this is keith i have th behringer x32 compact and just brìging out my own litte band but i m having little trouble with getting my mic audio loud, the music always covering the vocals, i will like to see some audio adjustment please and feed back cut out and second, i also will like to see clearly how to get 17-32 mics channels active 3rd i connected my digital s16 box the light were green but no output audio thanks for your help
Hey, as far as the music being louder than your vocals, that could be so many things it's impossible to suggest anything. The most common reason I've seen for this is that the speakers you are using are too small to compete with all the other instruments. Second thing... I own the compact as well. The only time channels 17 to 32 are available is when you are using a digital stage box. We don't have the actual inputs on our boards. If you are using a 16 input digital stage box, you can assign them to be 17 to 32 if you want and use the first 16 actual inputs on the board. That gives you the full 32 but you have to run the mic cables for inputs 1 to 16 directly to the board. If you have a 32 input stage box then all 32 channels on your compact are live. Third thing... When you connect a stage box to the AES50 with a CAT5 cable, you have to go into the ROUTING tab and change the inputs from "Local" to "AES50". -Hit the ROUTING tab. Use left right arrows to get to INPUT. You will see 4 rows of inputs. 1-8 9-16 17-24 25-32. They are in groups of 8 but you can use a combination of both. If you want to plug into the actual board, set to LOCAL. If you want to plug into the stage box, set to AES50. Example: 1-8 Local (plug mic cables directly into board channels 1-8) 9-16 Local (plug mic cables directly into board channels 9-16) 17-24 AES50 (plug mic cables into stage box channels 1-8 *automatically returns them on channels 17-24 on x32) 25-32 AES50 (plug mic cables into stage box channels 9-16 * automatically returns them on channels 25-32 on x32) ** the XLR outputs work the same. If you want to use the ones on the actual board, they have to be set to local. If you want them to come out the stage box, they have to be set to AES50 as well. The Xlr outputs are also in the ROUTING tab. Use right arrow to get to "XLR" .
There's something that confuses me about the Behringer x32. I would usually use the mix buses for different monitors. Why does the mixer use some of these for effects? Let's say I have 5 musicians playing and 3 singers, and I want them all to have stereo IEMs. There are 16 outputs in the 32-channel stagebox. I'll need to use all 16 outputs. How do I do this if mix buses 13-16 are being used for effects? Can someone please explain?
Modulation and time based effects are almost always put on aux sends. Unfortunately, this board does have some limitations with the routing, so you may not be able to get 8 stereo mixes. But for the price, that is forgivable. I would never give up reverb and echo for the sake of stereo monitors though. Your musicians can live with mono.
No offense but you obviously haven't done this much. To be asked for 8 stereo monitor feeds would literally make me laugh out loud. Never in 30 years have I been asked for even close to that. And if you want to mention huge stadium acts that probably have that many monitor feeds, you wouldn't be asking on this thread how that works if you had any experience with that. 5 musicians and 3 singers means 8 monitor mixes tops! And that's only if none of the actual musicians are one of the singers. To actually answer your question though, the x32 also has 6 aux outs that can be used for anything from main outs to live feed, to effects sends or even extra monitor outs. So the board actually has 22 outs.
Thanks for the tutorial! Our church is in the process of upgrading to an X32 Compact system too! Although we're waiting on our desk to be replaced by our supplier cause it's a faulty unit, oh well! When we were able to use it, we mostly used Sends on Fader to set levels for monitors. We're also going to be setting up a Behringer P16 Personal Monitoring System with in-ear monitors and headset mics as well, so the coming months are going to be really fun!
Awesome! Yam, this client ended up quite happy with the new install. I do highly recommend a stage box with the install as well. If you guys want a consultation, or need help with the install, just let me know!
We're nearing the end of the process now, just waiting for our case to arrive from China! We've got the AES50 as well, and the school that we run services in was kind enough to let us install Cat5e and boxes to either side of the hall so that makes things a lot easier! We used a partial setup (Desk, Speakers, Snake and New 2.4GHz Radio Mics) and it worked like a breeze except from the fact that one of our wall connector boxes was incorrectly wired! Oh well, we're nearing the end of it now so yay. I'm going to be training a few people up to use the desk because at the moment it's just me trained, so I'll probably use this video! Thanks!
@@thomgibbs Sounds like a sweet setup. Just wait until you have a permanent space! Then no more setup and strike every week. If the school is letting you install things, that makes it all much easier. Thanks for watching!
Hey Matt does the X32 work with passive speakers? I have monitors and front of house speakers that are passive. They have those old style equalizer. Would I still need those?
Passive means that the speaker cabinets do not have amps built in. All speakers have to be driven by amps. The X32 alone cannot drive a passive speaker, you need to go from the mixer, into an amp, then into the speakers. When you say EQ do you mean a graphic eq or crossover?
@@mattingramsoundIt is a stereo graphic EQ. And also my passive speakers do have a separate amp to power the speakers. My worry is if these items work with the x32.
@@i.g3629 The analog output of the X32 is a stereo (or mono) line level signal. Th other equipment won't know the difference between it and a regular analog console. As for the GEQ, you can continue to use it, or put a GEQ on the master bus inside the X32 instead. It's up to you!
Hello. I am managing a behringer x32 compact for my church. We just bought our first stage monitors. I want to control the volume separately from the house speakers. How can I achieve this or can you direct me to a tutorial of yours please. Thank you
This is a fairly complicated question as there are many different ways to do it and many factors. If you just want to take your FOH audio to the stream, just route your Main LR into one of your aux outs and plug it into the ATEM. (I cover routing in part 3). If you want a separate stream mix, the choose a stereo pair of busses to be you stream bus, then route those to the aux out into your atem. You can then mix for the stream in headphones with sends on fader. (I cover this a bit more in part 2). Those are the 2 easiest ways, but that just gets audio into your ATEM. How you get that online is a while nother topic.
Excellent tutorial. We have the larger X32 for our main services but was looking at the compact version for Youth group. Seems like a good idea since they're the same thing basically. No new stuff to learn.
This was so clear an informative. Thank you. We love our X32 Compact, but admittedly, a lot of it is over my head. Your video clarifies quite a few points. A while back we purchased an X-Live card for the X32, but have yet to get it to work properly. Are there any good resources you are aware of to help me get it installed properly? Thanks again.
Thanks for this tutorial. My church has this Board. We are starting to live stream services. We have bought two condenser mics that are plugged into channel 3&4 A keyboard is on channels 5&6. The main speaking/lecturn mic is on channel 1. The mixer outputs to a Yamaha unit (sorry Co y remember name!) MTX I think. Is there a way to pick up the signals from the two condensate mics to feed into the live stream but NOT have their sound pick up come out of the main speakers (which is causing feedback)? Sorry if that doesn’t make sense as I am a bit of a novice at this!
Was just going through unanswered comments. Not sure how I missed this one. Sorry about that. Instead of using a matrix for the stream output, use a bus. Then nothing goes to the stream unless you want it to.
Great tutorial I picked up a few different ways to do things. Have you used the X-32 with the Waves X-WSG card interfaced with Waves Soundgrid System and SuperRack? I'd love to see an in-depth tutorial on the system. There aren't many tutorials on the Waves Soundgrid/SuperRack System. The one's that are out there don't provide much information. Thanks for sharing the information.
Glad the video was helpful for you! I have not used the waves card with the x32, but I would question if it is worth it. One of the things I don't like about the x32 is how limited the inserts are. Unless the card opened up the functionality more, I would just upgrade to a better console. Like the M32. But, I have no experience with the waves card, so maybe it is totally worth it. Thanks!
dude, even I can understand what you are saying A lot of these guys are using crazy space terminologyand its really hard to understand. You have good teaching skills!
Lol! Thank you! I'm glad you were able to get something out of it. I have watched many tutorials in my day, and you are right, a lot of them are very hard to follow.
I may be missing it, but can you have effects on your channel heard in your monitor mixes? Also, at a recent gig, we ended up with every other instrument in the guitarist’s monitor but could not get HIS guitar in that mix. His guitar came through on the other three monitor channels, but no his. Help from anybody will be welcomed!
To get fx in the monitors, just turn up the fx returns in the desired mix bus (aux send). As for the other issue: it could be many things, but I would start by checking to make sure that the send on his guitar was pre fader and not post. You can assign pre/post on an individual bus basis for the same instrument.
My church has trusted me to be their internet/sound person. But, I have never done anything with sound before. Does anyone have any tips on where to start to learn more about the basics? We do have an X32 Compact and that's what they started me out with lol.
I would say, it is good, when you have small bands or the band lineup allows it, to group it into 8 pseudo subgroups, so you have to change between 1-8/9-16 etc. for fine adjustment. The producer could be an alternative, when you use the channels always for the same application and so you write it down. If you have the money for the big X32 and no space restrictions... this is easier to use. Access to 16 channels at once.
Fantastic tutorial! I am actually doing research on revamping our 50-year old audio setup right now. Wondering if anyone can answer two questions: anyone have good resources for growing in knowledge with how to use this sort of equipment (and other equipment) specifically for spoken word? We don't have a live band. All singing is a capella so our needs are pretty modest. But we've never had to do any of this before. Second, we're near Chicago but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what to search for to have a company consult for this kind of work. What should I be looking for?
Thanks Derek, I'm glad you got something out of the tutorial. To answer your questions: You won't find a better resource than youtube. Any thing you want to learn about is right here. Of course, there is always this channel as a resource. Also , depending on how big your install will be, I would be happy to do a consultation for you guys. If you are looking for specific gear, you can also get in touch with the manufacturer and ask for qualified dealers in your area.
To record off the board properly into a phone you would need some kind of stereo recording interface/dongle. Then you could bus your mix out a pair of auxes and into your phone. It would be much easier to record on a USB drive.
Hey Kyle, you can get any of the fx returns into a mix bus the same way you would a mic. Select the fx return channel, then turn it up the bus that goes to the monitors. Or you could select the monitor mix bus, hit sends on fader, then go to your returns fader bank and turn them up. Hope this helps!
TFTGear Oof, good luck! My school uses one Behringer X32 rack and in the back stage there is like 10 BIG BIG huge Amplifers in the back stage. The Mixer and the other laptops and all are like in the bottom left corner of the hall (supposing the front of the hall is the stage itself) xD My old school used a TF3, man I loved buttons so I just tried to search it up online. And wow, learnt a lot since 5th grade! Thanks for this informative video too!

Happy to help! It's hard to find analog boards now-a-days. You have to be comfortable with digital if you want to run sound.
Thanks for a great tutorial! We use 12 mics and one thing that I find very useful is the ability to view your 16 mic inputs across the board by selecting 1-8 and 9-16 on the left side of the board at the same time.

@@mattingramsound Wow thanks man. I truly appreciate your help. You are the boss
I need help on how to use a group aux out I want to get more than 6 monitor outputs
Hello. I am managing a behringer x32 compact for my church. We just bought our first stage monitors. I want to control the volume separately from the house speakers. How can I achieve this or can you direct me to a tutorial of yours please. Thank you
Good news! That info is in this tutorial!
I really enjoyed that and you put across the ideas very well- i found the background music distracting though
Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you liked the video, and sorry for the distracting music!
@@mattingramsound No need to apologise
Hi Matt how do I send sound online through an atem from the x32
This is a fairly complicated question as there are many different ways to do it and many factors. If you just want to take your FOH audio to the stream, just route your Main LR into one of your aux outs and plug it into the ATEM. (I cover routing in part 3). If you want a separate stream mix, the choose a stereo pair of busses to be you stream bus, then route those to the aux out into your atem. You can then mix for the stream in headphones with sends on fader. (I cover this a bit more in part 2). Those are the 2 easiest ways, but that just gets audio into your ATEM. How you get that online is a while nother topic.
@@mattingramsound anyway you may show me the 2nd bit of how to do it...possibly through an IM insta or something
Excellent tutorial. We have the larger X32 for our main services but was looking at the compact version for Youth group. Seems like a good idea since they're the same thing basically. No new stuff to learn.
Ya, the compact is a great choice. You lose a little bit of control for the space, but it's a good trade off. Thanks for watching!
I haven't used that card. Whats the use case?
@@mattingramsound we want to record some of our gigs and mix them in Studio One. Phone and camera recordings are not the best quality.
Thanks for this tutorial.
My church has this Board. We are starting to live stream services.
We have bought two condenser mics that are plugged into channel 3&4
A keyboard is on channels 5&6.
Thanks!
thank you... you just gave me some helpful knowledge
Very glad I could help!
dude, even I can understand what you are saying
A lot of these guys are using crazy space terminologyand its really hard to understand.
You have good teaching skills!
Lol! Thank you! I'm glad you were able to get something out of it. I have watched many tutorials in my day, and you are right, a lot of them are very hard to follow.
Does this have the ability to have a bunch of different OUTS?
You would need to be more specific about your need, but yes, it has assignable outputs.
Very educational. Thanks for the in depth review 👌🏼
Thank you! I hope it was helpful!
When the person singing and they sound Muffled what do you do?
There are so may reasons for this it would take an entire video to address.
@@mattingramsound I'll wait :)

Press 1-8 and 9-16 together, boom, 16 channels on both groups :)
Is there a way to disable the phantom power butten permanantly so you dont melt accidently your synths or line in equipment ?
Not that I know of. Typically line level equipment can take the 48v, it's ribbon mics you have to worry about.
@@mattingramsound thanks
Great instructional video
I learned a few things!
Glad you enjoyed it!
GREEEAT MAN!!
Thank you!
Thank you that was a great overview. 🙏
You're welcome! I'm glad it helped!
Thanks bro!
You're welcome!
How i can recording live with a phone?
To record off the board properly into a phone you would need some kind of stereo recording interface/dongle. Then you could bus your mix out a pair of auxes and into your phone. It would be much easier to record on a USB drive.
this is really helpful
Glad it helped!
Thank You ! I will be buying the x32 compact and this gives me a great starting point.
Happy I could help!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
How do you get effects to send through to the monitors? I can send them through the house all day but the monitors I have no clue
Review the new WING please, I know you could review and explain it perfectly ;-)
I would love to! I just have to figure out how to get one first!

Oof, good luck! My school uses one Behringer X32 rack and in the back stage there is like 10 BIG BIG huge Amplifers in the back stage.
The Mixer and the other laptops and all are like in the bottom left corner of the hall (supposing the front of the hall is the stage itself)
xD
My old school used a TF3, man I loved buttons so I just tried to search it up online. And wow, learnt a lot since 5th grade! Thanks for this informative video too!
